PROJECT LPL FINANCIAL CORPORATE OFFICE TYPE OFFICE CLIENT PORTMAN HOLDINGS BUILDING AREA 450,000 SF (41,806 SM) LOCATION CHARLOTTE, NC, USA STATUS SCHEMATIC DESIGN
Envisioned as a simple, elegant, bold composition in keeping with the Westin, LPL Corporate Office projects a strong image on the skyline of Charlotte. It is purposely developed as a natural extension of the architecture of the Westin, powerful in surface and detail. The project is as tall and as recognizable as the Westin on the skyline. The base of the tower, the place where it meets the ground, where it connects to the public realm, is richly developed with stone and glass, the entry denoted by the notch in the tower. It is further developed with a semi-circular glass canopy, almost like an urban chandelier reaching out over the sidewalk, presenting a strong connection to and marker of entry at the people scale.
PROJECT SEMPRA HEADQUARTERS BUILDING TYPE OFFICE CLIENT LANKFORD PHELPS PORTMAN BUILDING AREA 344,000 SF (31,958 SM) LOCATION SAN DIEGO, CA, USA STATUS SCHEMATIC DESIGN
A new office building type based on social experience, energy comfort, net zero approach, and aesthetic derived more from the elements of the building than from an assumed aesthetic. The key feature in this new building type is the splitting of the large floor plate office block allowing daylight to penetrate and fill the middle of the block. This open space becomes a public gathering point both formally and informally allowing for the active interchange of thoughts and ideas from the various staff groups. This is an idea of openness at all levels – less cellular office, more open offices, more open spaces, more connectedness.
PROJECT TIAN LONG FORTUNE CENTER TYPE OFFICE, HOTEL CLIENT GUANGXI WEIZHUANG REAL ESTATE DEVELOPMENT CO LTD BUILDING AREA 3,516,871 SF (326,728 SM) LOCATION NANNING, CHINA STATUS SCHEMATIC DESIGN
As the tallest tower in the region, the project is certain to command attention. The unique form of the tower begins with a square base that widens out to an octagon in the middle, before elegantly tapering back into a square plan at the top. The glass facets created by the tower’s sculptural form symbolically recall ASEAN’s logo depicting a bundle of harvested rice tied in the middle. The sweeping curvaceous lines of the tower create a unique presence on the skyline. The faceted glass facades will reflect the sun and the surrounding city throughout the day in ever changing patterns. At night, the facets of the tower will be traced with LED lights to outline the powerful form and the curving glass facades will reflect special night lighting.
PROJECT TAIKANG SONGJIANG CCRC TYPE RESIDENTIAL, HEALTHCARE CLIENT TAIKANG LIFE INSURANCE COMPANY BUILDING AREA 1,580,895 SF (146,870 SM) LOCATION SHANGHAI, CHINA ESIGN DEVELOPMENT STATUS D
The composition of the community is a perfect example of order and variety simultaneously achieved. The buildings all relate well to each other to work as an ensemble. Pairs of residential towers are connected by indoor Sky Gardens that serve to project an image of one larger, inclusive structure rather than two separate spaces. While the different program elements are distinct, the functions are conveniently integrated, complementing and working well together without impinging on each other. To help define a core for the site, the facilities are connected by an architectural trellis at the central axis of the project. The trellis is approx. 12 m high and creates both a symbolic and literal connection between the disparate structures in the community.
PROJECT LANE FIELD NORTH TYPE HOTEL, RETAIL CLIENT LPP LANE FIELD, LLC BUILDING AREA 429,274 SF (39,880 SM) LOCATION SAN DIEGO, CA, USA STATUS CONSTRUCTION DOCUMENTS
The Lane Field North site is proposed to consist of a dual branded253-key select service hotel and a 147-key extended stay hotel, leased retail areas for shops and restaurants and above-grade structured parking. With the inclusion of publicly-accessible shops, restaurants and terraces at various levels along the west side of the building facing the park, the project will extend the public realm vertically, allowing for great views of the San Diego Bay and the events that occur along the waterfront. As a nod to the history of the site as the former location of Lane Field ballpark, these retail and terrace spaces will step back from the park in such a way as to recall the bleachers of old.
PROJECT WANGFUJING WESTHALL PROJECT TYPE OFFICE, RETAIL CLIENT TIANRUN TONGTAI ESTATE BUILDING AREA 875,084 SF (81,298 SM) LOCATION BEIJING, CHINA STATUS COMPETITION
Our design draws inspiration from the traditional Beijing siheyuan, a style of living conceived nearly 3,000 years ago. Symmetry, balance and harmony are expressed in multiple ways. The centrally located courtyard promotes a harmonized relationship between humanity and nature. Acknowledging the project’s position between the more massive contemporary commercial buildings and the smaller-scaled siheyuan neighborhood, the eastern building face on Wangfujing Avenue is a sleek and elegant mix of modern day polish and old world symbolism. Towards the west, the façade design draws from the scale of siheyuan, as each unit floor is noticeably “stacked” to break up the mass of the ten-story building.
PROJECT QINGPU XUJING EXHIBITION CENTER TYPE HOTEL, RESIDENTIAL, OFFICE CLIENT GREENLAND GROUP REAL ESTATE ENTERPRISE BUILDING AREA 9,205,167 SF (855,188 SM) LOCATION QINGPU, CHINA STATUS COMPETITION
This design aims at building the social and community relations for the district anchored by the National Exhibition Center, linking the exhibition population to the population of the surrounding communities. Three areas are organized around three distinct landscapes. The center is anchored by a covered urban public square, a hardscaped gathering space with retail at the lower podium opening to the plaza, and office space on the floors above. To the east, a formally landscaped urban garden provides a unique environment for the hotel and service apartments. To the west, the SOHO type office component, Grade A office, and retail are intertwined with an informal landscape and water garden on multiple levels.
PROJECT BINHU INTERNATIONAL CITY TYPE OFFICE, RESIDENTIAL, HOTEL, RETAIL CLIENT HENAN GREENLAND NEW TOWN REAL ESTATE CO., LTD. BUILDING AREA 6,008,339 SF (558,193 SM) LOCATION ZHENGZHOU, CHINA STATUS COMPETITION
The new Greenland Towers are founded on the rational based principles of simplicity of form, surface, and beauty controlled by program, rationality, flexibility, performance and efficiency. Seen as an object in the park landscape as a focal point for the district, and as a marker for the 2 7 events, the simple massing geometry becomes the overriding image maker for the project. The twin towers are intended to create a strong visual identity. The circular form of the project is wrapped with an inner and outer skin, red on the inside and silver on the outside. Each color can be read with multiple meanings: red denoting the color of the heart at the center symbolizing good fortune and joy, and silver as the outer skin for brightness representative of the future.
PROJECT GUANGZHOU LUOGANG GREENLAND CENTRAL PLAZA TYPE OFFICE, RESIDENTIAL, RETAIL CLIENT GREENLAND GROUP GUANGDONG REAL ESTATE DEPARTMENT BUILDING AREA 6,117,151 SF (568,302 SM) LOCATION GUANGZHOU, CHINA STATUS COMPETITION
Four towers flank a central retail garden bisecting the site in the east-west axis. The signature tower anchors the office program, which includes three standard towers. This strong formal front is balanced by the placement of individual towers at the central axis of the paired forms toward the south of the site. The internal east-west street organizes, as well as balances, the difference between public and private program elements on the site. These vertical forms along the streets, balanced by the lower retail functions in the center, are in chorus with the site architecture to anchor and harmonize the local site condition while integrating the entire district conceptually, formally and architecturally.

The blend of amenities and natural isolation creates the perfect environment for the hosting of highly ranked international officials and VIPs with a need for discretion and security. Harmony and balance are maintained as the formal lines of the architecture make peace with the organic flow of nature in a bold, yet serene manner. The built environment is purposefully set into the natural elements. In some places, the terrain lifts the architecture up to afford views of the surrounding area while in other areas, the topography embraces the buildings, allowing them to nestle in for privacy. The result is an exclusive enclave, a pleasant drive yet a world away from bustling Shanghai.
PROJECT QINGDAO INTERNATIONAL EXHIBITION & CONVENTION CENTER TYPE EXHIBITION, HOTEL, OFFICE, RETAIL CLIENT QINGDAO CONSON DEVELOPMENT CO., LTD. BUILDING AREA 4,349,384 SF (404,071 SM) LOCATION QINGDAO, CHINA STATUS COMPETITION
Tying into Qingdao’s long and beneficial relationship with the ocean, the design of the new convention center complex pays homage to the restorative powers a human soul finds in the dancing waters of the sea. The tower’s faceted facades pick up the play of light and color fueled by shifting daylight as the sun travels across the sky. Large water features throughout the property add the soothing white noise of moving water and offer dappled reflections of the complex’s abundance of natural light. The towers rise to mark the site and provide a visual gateway from the ocean to the planned new financial district. The complex is a synergistic blend of attractive offerings that together create a special center of life and activity.

Taken together these elements form a homogeneous whole with in a simple geometry. The site until recently was a natural setting defined by wooded hills and crops, transformed into an urban environment with streets and public areas. The design is based on principles of simplicity of form, surface, and beauty governed by program rationality, flexibility, performance and efficiency. Delineated as a beacon, a lighthouse, a marker, the tower inflects towards the water, like a boat moving towards the water. Its form evolves from the intermixing of program, structure, simplicity of surface, and elegance of shaping. The resultant curved triangular plan responds to the waterfront views and the city side. The tower is ethereal, maximizing transparency to maximize view, the tower is translucent in some lights, reflective in others. Luminous at the day and illuminated, at night it increases comfort and reduces energy usage.

PROJECT TVH ENTELECHY RESIDENCES TYPE RESIDENTIAL CLIENT TRUE VALUE HOMES BUILDING AREA 530,000 SF (49,239 SM) LOCATION CHENNAI, INDIA STATUS UNDER CONSTRUCTION
The design recalls the weaving characteristics of the Madras Pattern which originated in Chennai (formerly Madras), obtained by overlaying continuous lines of pigmented fabric orthogonally to each other. Each tower has its own color achieving a feeling of individuality for its residents, and a more distinct appeal for each building. The shades of color are organized along the entire height of the facades in a vertical progression based on the Fibonacci proportion. As a result, the composition of the buildings appears to be organically united by this common thread, while at the same time, distinct by the individuality of each building’s overall hue.
PROJECT YINCHUAN - GREENLAND CENTER TYPE OFFICE, HOTEL, RETAIL CLIENT NINGXIA GREENLAND REAL ESTATE COMPANY BUILDING AREA 3,293,757 SF (306,000 SM) LOCATION YINCHUAN, CHINA STATUS UNDER CONSTRUCTION
The two towers are set on the diagonal across the central axis to achieve optimal space and views between them. When viewed from the central axis the twin towers appear as an urban gateway to the Sino Arabian Axis. Placing them rotated and in relation to each other creates, from two very similar towers, a sculptural composition of one form evolving and changing from various vantage points. The sloping parallelogram form of the towers curves to complete itself at the 301meter height of the towers, enclosing the hotel lobby sky garden level on the north tower, and a private sky club garden for the south tower.
PROJECT CHEDA INTERNATIONAL FINANCE CENTER TYPE OFFICE, RETAIL CLIENT SHANDONG SUNWING REAL ESTATE CO., LTD. BUILDING AREA 5,833,544 SF (541,954 SM) LOCATION JINAN, CHINA STATUS UNDER CONSTRUCTION
The overall image of the project is uniqueness and harmony. The form of the Signature Tower is unique, yet complements the composition of the other towers and retail podium. The material and the scale of the podium relative to the scale and integration of the towers are also complementary, which brings harmony to the project. Cheda Plaza is conceived as a unifying urban outdoor space as an extension of Citizen’s Park to the west. The Plaza becomes the heart of the project – a vital hub of activity to support the functions contained in the towers and retail base.

PROJECT EXPO HOTEL COMPLEX TYPE HOTEL, RETAIL CLIENT EXPO SHANGHAI GROUP BUILDING AREA 3,229,173 SF (300,000 SM) LOCATION SHANGHAI, CHINA STATUS UNDER CONSTRUCTION
In lieu of designing one or two stand-alone hotel buildings, JPA proposed a cluster of hotels that, together, will create a new and exciting core facility for the Expo site. While separating the development hotels into four principal buildings consisting of two convention-sized hotels and two smaller boutique hotels, these buildings become uniquely linked together at multiple public levels, creating a robust synergy between the hotel components and providing for a variety of public spaces which allow for meeting, retail and restaurant facilities to occur. In order to capture panoramic views of the Huangpu River and the Shanghai skyline, we have created two elevated roof garden levels, which become the Garden Lobby Levels for all four of the hotels.
PROJECT BAO’AN OCT HOTEL AT HAIYI PLAZA TYPE HOTEL, RESIDENTIAL CLIENT SHENZHEN OCT HOTEL GROUP BUILDING AREA 1,130,211 SF (105,000 SM) LOCATION SHENZHEN, CHINA STATUS UNDER CONSTRUCTION
Taking its form from the water, the water’s edge, and the fluidity of the sea, the OCT hotel and apartment project is composed of soft, sinuous, curvilinear forms wrapping the edges of the site and enclosing a private garden in the middle of the block. Bold in form, the surfaces of the towers are defined by components integral in the functioning of the exterior enclosure. The surfaces of the podium, the ballroom terrace, the health club terrace and the projecting sunshade at the roof give the project a strong horizontal reading. This extends up the tower through sunshades at each floor, which allow for the use of a transparent high performance glazing system, thus optimizing the views and strengthening the link between the patron and the sea.
PROJECT WENZHOU ZHIXIN PLAZA TYPE HOTEL, OFFICE, RESIDENTIAL, RETAIL CLIENT ZHIXIN REAL ESTATE DEVELOPMENT CO., LTD. BUILDING AREA 2,107,574 SF (195,800 SM) LOCATION WENZHOU, CHINA STATUS UNDER CONSTRUCTION
Formally, the strong bold geometries of the three individual components and the site are composed based on the exposures of the triangular site and their relationship to the urban context. The office/hotel tower anchors the project at the apex of the triangular block. The square tower is sited in a circular reflecting pool defined by the entry drive to the office and hotel lobbies. Its vertical height is accentuated through the re-entrant corners and the bold expressed vertical mullions of the four identical planar facades. These surfaces rise vertically and slowly peel away from the tower volume, opening up at the top of the tower like a flower petal opening to the sky, providing a unique and memorable identity on the Wenzhou skyline.

Inside, the 6-story sky bridge serves as the conference center for office tenants. From the retail within the office towers, visitors will travel through an “urban shopping village” and on to a central square. Their visit becomes a journey of discovery as they pass through a sequence of varying spaces, each with its own appeal.
PROJECT ZHE JIANG FORTUNE FINANCE CENTER TYPE OFFICE CLIENT ZHEJIAN TE FU LONG REAL ESTATE BUILDING AREA 2,260,421 SF (210,000 SM) LOCATION HANGZHOU, CHINA STATUS COMPLETED IN 2012
The positioning of the towers, their form and the relationship between the two is paramount. The curved shape is powerful and will maintain the project’s prominence as the first large scale development within the CBD. It is likely that any new towers constructed within the area will be rectilinear in form. The contrast of this complex’s curves will be distinct within the urban environment, ensuring that the project will retain its landmark status. The positioning of the towers takes on a sculptural feel. As the top of one building reaches up, its peak flows into that of the other creating a dynamic energy between the sloping roofs of the two towers.
PROJECT PARK HYATT HYDERABAD TYPE HOTEL, RESIDENTIAL CLIENT GAYATRI HI-TECH HOTELS BUILDING AREA 599,550 SF (55,700 SM) LOCATION HYDERABAD, INDIA STATUS COMPLETED IN 2012
Drawing inspiration from traditional Indian architecture, the hotel was originally conceived as a microcosm focused around an interior garden that was open to the sky, and shaded by a trellis. With a pool in the center, the concept was to have capitalized on the natural cooling effect provided by air drawn in through the lower portion of the internal courtyard, passing over the water, then circulating up and out through the open trellis. During the design process, the owner decided to enclose the internal courtyard, preserving the garden concept as an atrium. The idea of the microcosm was kept and further enhanced by introducing terraced gardens, descending into a reflecting pool highlighted by a monumental sculpture that soars two stories high.
Design Philosophy Architecture exists to serve people. Our approach to design is firmly rooted in the interpretation of basic human needs. We view design solutions as an integrated expression of function, purpose and sensory experience conceived in a holistic fashion to make perfect sense. For us, the focus remains, always, on people. Portman is renowned for innovative, responsive design solutions that are sensitive to the local culture and the context in which they exist. Our architecture transcends national borders by striving for universal human appeal. Recognizing human values and the human response to space, nature and light, we aim to weave sensory experiences into the built environment. We work to understand humanity better in order to create an environment that is more beneficial to people. We believe in directing our energies toward an environmental architecture, born of human needs and responding to vital physical, social and economic circumstances. While sustainability has become an industry buzzword, we have always embraced it as a responsibility. A healthy environment is intrinsically valuable and essential to a healthy society. Through the design of the built environment, we have the opportunity to positively impact the natural environment and enhance the quality of human life. We also aspire to integrate design excellence with economic feasibility. Development knowledge and ownership interests give our team a unique perspective on the economic aspects of the design process as we resolve how to turn visionary ideas into realities. We use technology, innovative systems and materials as tools to achieve our design philosophy. Buildings should serve people, not the other way around. This strong belief in how design should evolve and relate to people on a human level has sustained us and provided the world with significant and memorable projects.
