ABOUT US S.K.I. Wholesale Beer was founded in July 1987 by Ralph Mauriello and Charlie Yim. Initially, S.K.I. operated out of a relatively small 5,000 squarefoot building located in Middle Village, Queens, with a total of ten employees. Over the next 6 years, continued growth necessitated a series of moves, first to a 25,000 square-foot facility on Stewart Avenue in Brooklyn in 1991, followed by a second move in 1993 to its current 60,000 square foot location on Gardner Avenue in Brooklyn. Our expansions have allowed S.K.I. to continue delivering the high level service that our customers have come to expect.

other distributors, we at S.K.I actively promote and build the brands we represent. There is an additional 5,000 square-feet of warehouse space designated for redemption of recycled products and a cold box which keeps approximately 10,500 barrels refrigerated.

Harpoon Rich & Dan’s Rye IPA

We are embracing our hop obsession in a new way, compacting an abundance of lupulin-borne bitterness into a “session” IPA, delivering all the fruity, piney character of a much bigger IPA. Original Flag Porter 1825

4.6%

Period English Porter

Flag Porter is brewed from a traditional 19th century British recipe using yeast salvaged from a vessel which sank in the English Channel in 1825. In 1988, several bottles of the brew were raised from their resting place 60 feet deep in the Channel. They were in their original containers, with their wood stoppers and wax seals intact. When experts examined the beer under a microscope, they found a small percentage of the yeast to be still living! After months of growing this yeast, this porter was brewed using an 1850 recipe. Adhering to the practises of porter brewers of the era, Dr. Thomas uses barley and hops grown without pesticides or chemical fertilizers. 16.9oz (12 loose)

This cider owes its rich, full flavor to the quality of the fruit we use as well as to the care we take at each stage of the cider-making process. The result is a subtle alliance of sweet and sour taste, that is the trademark of Clos Normand. 25.4oz (12 loose)

RESOURCES

OF BEER PALE ALE American Pale Ales are light in color, ranging from golden to a light copper color. The style of this beer is defined by the American hops used. American hops typically have high bitterness and aroma. This is a perfect beer for big fare like grilled burgers or combination pizzas, as well as lighter fare like sushi and green salads.

Examples of the Style: Steelhead Extra Pale, Mendocino Blue Heron, Founders Pale, Stone Pale, Stevens Point Cascade, UFO Pale, Bear Republic XP, River Horse Hop Hazard, Old Speckled Hen, Day of the Dead Pale

INDIA PALE ALE India Pale Ale, the modern version of which has largely been formed in the US, has an intense hop flavor, a golden to copper color, and a medium malty body. The aroma is moderate to very strong. IPAs work especially well at cutting the heat of chili, vindaloo or Sichuan cuisine. In England, IPA is often just another name for bitter although some micros are doing their own versions of an American IPA as well.

Examples of the Style: Founders All Day IPA, Founders Centennial IPA, Harpoon IPA, Harpoon Red's Rye IPA, River Horse Hopalotamus, Radiant Pig Junior, Saratoga IPA, Cricket Hill Hopnotic, Stevens Point Galaxy IPA, Day of the Dead DOA

WEST COAST IPA Though West Coast IPAs are still considered American India Pale Ales, they differ from their cousins in the East in that they typically pack a much larger punch and are more suited to tasting in smaller quantities than extended session drinking, though there are some lunatics who pound them.

Examples of the Style: Bear Republic Racer 5, Bear Republic Hop Rod Rye, Stone IPA, Stone Ruination, Stone Sublimely Self Righteous, Speakeasy Big Daddy, Speakeasy Double Daddy, Harppon Leviathan IIPA, Mendocino White Hawk, Mendocino Talon, Steelhead Double IPA

AMBER ALE A catch-all for any beer lighter than a Dark Ale in color, ranging from amber to deep red hues. This style tends to focus on malts, but hop character can range from low to high. Expect a balanced beer, with toasted malt characters and a light fruitiness in most examples. The range can run from a basic caramely ale, to faux-Oktoberfest style ales that mimic Märzens.

Examples of the Style: Mendocino Red Tail Ale, Stone Levitation, Speakeasy Prohibition, Day of the Dead Amber, Bear Republic Red Rocket

AMBER LAGER A catch-all category for red and amber colored lagers. Though typically beers in this style lean toward malt and fruity flavors, there is a lot of variability and some can have a surprisingly striking hop character for lager.

Examples of the Style: Queens Lager, Saratoga Lager, Goldstar, 1906 Reserva

AMERICAN STRONG ALE A catch-all category to incorporate the plethora of strong, stylistically vague beers coming from American craft breweries. Some are related to English Strong Ales, but with a higher hop rate, while others are ultra-strong variants on the IPA or red ale themes. No matter how varied their origins or characters might be, all are intense and potent.

Examples of the Style: Stone Arrogant Bastard, Stone Oaked Arrogant Bastard, Mendocino Eye of the Hawk, Founders Dirty Bastard

PORTER Brewing of Porters began in Britain, but has become a popular style among American brewers. Brewers may add hops generously, use smoked malts, or add coffee or chocolate to complement the burnt flavor associated with this style. Some are even barrel aged in Bourbon or whiskey barrels. The hop bitterness range is quite wide but most are balanced. Many are just easy drinking session porters as well.

Examples of the Style: Steelhead Scotch Porter, Stone Smoked Porter, Meantime London Porter, Meantime Naval College Porter, Meantime Scotch Porter, Deady of the Dead Porter, St. Peter's Old Style Porter, Founders Porter

STOUT Stout is another style that orginated in the British Isles and is very similar to Porter. The boundaries between the two are nebulous and the words can nearly be used interchangably. Brewers many use smoked malts, or add coffee or chocolate to complement the burnt flavor associated with this style. Like Porters they range from sessionable to quite strong.

Examples of the Style: Steelhead Extra Stout, Mendocino Black Hawk, Buffalo Stout, St. Peter's Cream Stout, Belhaven Black, Lion Stout

PALE LAGER Light bodied, pale colored lagers made popular in America after prohibition. They are typically cool, refreshing beers, with a mild flavor that is usually malt based. These beers are highly sessionable and their popularity has spread through out the world.

Examples of the Style: Steven's Point Special Lager, Kingfisher, Hite, Mexicali, Phuket, Estrella Gallicia, Svytrys, Slavutych, Cricket Hill East Coast Lager

PILSNER While the definition of pilsner is open to much debate in the beer community, it generally refers to pale, hoppy lagers, ranging from around 30 IBU and up. Ranging from Classic German Pilsners, which tend to be light-to-medium bodied, semi-sweet to offdry, hopped with German noble hops, to New World artisan renditions which showcase various new world hop strains.

Examples of the Style: Veltins, Weihenstephan Pilsener, Maes Pils, König Pils, Jever, Radeberger, Efes, Palma Louca, Krusovice, Rebel Czech, Žatec

BOCK & DOPPELBOCK Bocks are strong German lagers. Doppelbocks are even stronger. Generally they have a very full-bodied flavor and are darker than typical lagers. Flavors always emphasize malt. They range in color from amber to nearly black, and dark versions often have slight chocolate or roasted characters.

Examples of the Style: Hopf Weißbock, Weihenstephan Vitus, Weihenstephan Korbinian, Eggenberg Urbock, Eggenberg Samichlaus Bier, Eggenberg Samichlaus Helles

GERMAN LAGER German lagers are light colored lagers typically similar to Pilsners, however there tends to be more of a balance between malt and hop flavors. Light colored German lagers are further subdived into different styles by region, however many American drinkers do not make the distinction.

Examples of the Style: Weihenstephan Original, Hofbräu Original, Dab, Beyreuther Original, Beyreuther Zwick'l, Moosbacher Lager, Augustiner Edelstof, Innstadt, Veldensteiner, Reutberger Kloster Hell

DUNKEL LAGER Copper to dark brown lager common in Germany and the Czech Republic but made worldwide. Medium body. Nutty toasted chocolate-like malty sweetness in aroma and flavor. Medium bitterness. Low “noble-type” hop flavor and aroma. Both German and Czech dark lagers span a wide range of characters from sweet to dry.

Examples of the Style: Hofbräu Dunkel, Žatec Dark, Beyreuther Landbier, Reutberger Kloster Dunkel, Harpoon Dark

KÖLSCH A unique pale ale style from Cologne which is lagered after the initial fermentation for a more crisp flavor. Golden color and easy drinking.

Examples of the Style: Gaffel Kölsch, Sünner Kölsch, Zunft Kölsch

HEFEWEIZEN A south German style of wheat beer (weissbier) made with a typical ratio of 50:50, or even higher, wheat. A yeast that produces a unique phenolic flavors of banana and cloves with an often dry and tart edge, some spiciness, bubblegum or notes of apples. Little hop bitterness, and a moderate level of alcohol. The “Hefe” prefix means “with yeast”, hence the beers unfiltered and cloudy appearance.

Examples of the Style: Weihenstephan Hefeweizen, Weihenstephan Kristallweizen, Hofbräu Hefeweizen, Flensberger Hefeweizen, Hopf Helle Weiß, Moosbacher Weiss, Maisel's Weiss, Schofferhofer, Veldensteiner Weißbier, UFO Hefe, Day of the Dead Hefe

DUNKELWEIZEN A dark take on the German wheat theme, dunkelweizens have the same banana and clove notes of their pale cousins, but also have earthy, toasty, chocolatey notes from the addition of dark malts. They are “shoulder season” wheat beers to many drinkers something a little more robust than a hefeweizen for the fall and spring seasons, but not as rich as winter’s weizenbocks.

Examples of the Style: Weihenstephan Dark/Dunkel, Hopf Dunkel Weiß, Moosbacher Dunkelweiss, Veldensteiner Dunkelweiß

WITBIER A Belgian ale style that's very pale and cloudy in appearance due to it being unfiltered and the high level of wheat, and sometimes oats, that's used in the mash. Always spiced, generally with coriander, orange peel and other oddball spices or herbs in the back ground. The crispness and slight twang comes from the wheat and the lively level of carbonation.

Examples of the Style: Bellegems Witbier, Blanche de Namur, Blanche de Bruxelles, Timmermans Blanche, Dentergems Wit, Gruut Wit, Martens Witte, Speakeasy the Witness, UFO White

BELGIAN PALE ALE Belgian Pales consume the Belgian brewing scene. They differ from other regional Pale Ale varieties, by traditionally being less bitter, with a delicate hop finish, and boasting sweetish to toasty malt overtones. Colors range from pale straw yellow to amber hues. Most will be crowned with thick, clinging, rocky white heads. Flavors and aromas will vary. Some have natural spice characters from yeast and hops, while others are spiced.

Examples of the Style: Wolf 7, Lucifer, Triporteur Heaven, St. Feuillien Blond, Brunehaut Blond, Ter Dolen Blond, Perennial Hommel

BELGIAN STRONG PALE ALE The higher alcohol variant of Belgian Pale Ale, this style is perhaps even more popular than its little brother. The best Belgian Stong Pales have a similar, but more robust flavor and similar color to normal Belgian Pales, while completely concealing their high alcohol content from the palatte.

Examples of the Style: Delirium Tremens, Lucifer, St. Martin Blond, La Trappe Isid’or, St. Martin Blond, Reinart Flemish Wild Ale, Buffalo Bitter, Brigand, Bar Bar, Hopus, St. Sebastiaan, Rince Cochon, Kwak, Gouden Carolus, St. Feuillien Grand Cru, Perennial Aria

BELGIAN DARK ALE Belgian Darks offer a massive range of characters. Colors range from amber, to light brown, to deep garnet hues, with thick, rocky, long lasting heads. Aromas can be anywhere from traces of yeast, spiced, malty, floral and even slightly intoxicating. Flavors from dry and spiced, to sweet and malty. Most have a low bitterness.

Examples of the Style: Triporteur Hell, Kasteel Donker, St. Feuillien Brune

BELGIAN STONG DARK ALE On the same path as the Belgian Dark Ale but higher in alcohol with more all around character. The alcohol character can be deceivingly hidden or can be very bold and in your face. Look for lots of complexity within a delicate palate. Hop and malt character can vary, most are fruity and may have mild dark malt flavors. Phenols will range from minimal to high and most will be light on the hops. Most are spicy and alcoholic.

Examples of the Style: Delirium Nocturnum, Gouden Carolous Classic, Bar Bar Bok, St. Feuillien Special, Kasteel Cuvée du Chateu, Urthel Bock

DUBBEL The Belgian Dubbel is a rich malty beer with some spice and mild alcoholic characteristics. Dark fruit flavors may be present. It may show traits of a steely caramel flavor from the use of crystal malt or dark candy sugar. Look for a medium to full body with an expressive carbonation and very mild hopping.

Examples of the Style: St. Martin Dubbel, La Trappe Dubbel, Sterkens Dubbel

TRIPEL Tripel is a style in which brewers use up to three times the amount of malt than a standard Trappist "Simple." Traditionally, they are bright yellow to gold in color. Head should be big, dense and creamy. Aroma and flavor runs along complex, spicy phenolic, powdery yeast, fruity/estery with a sweet finish. Sweetness comes from both the pale malts and the higher alcohol. even balance of malts and hops. Tripels are actually notoriously alcoholic, yet the best crafted ones hide this character completely.

Examples of the Style: Gouden Carolous Tripel, Kasteel Tripel, Tripel Karmeliet, St. Feuillien Tripel, St. Martin Tripel, Straffe Hendrik La Trappe Tripel

QUADRUPEL Quadrupel is a Belgian style ale of great strength with bolder flavor compared to its Dubbel and Tripel sister styles. Typically a dark creation that ranges within the deep red, brown and garnet hues. Full bodied with a rich malty palate. Phenols are usually at a moderate level. Sweet with a low bitterness yet a well perceived alcohol. Probably the most complex and sophisticated style of beer.

Examples of the Style: La Trappe Quadrupel, Prearis Quadrupel, Straffe Hendrik Quadrupel, Urthel Quadrupel

LAMBIC In the case of Fruit Lambics, whole fruits are traditionally added after spontaneous fermentation has started. Kriek (cherries), Frambroise (raspberries), Pêche (peach) and Cassis (black currant) are common fruits, all producing subtle to intense fruit characters respectively. The beer is subjected to additional maturation before bottling. Malt and hop characters are generally low to allow the fruit to consume the palate. Alcohol content tends to be low.

Examples of the Style: St. Louis Cassis, St. Louis Geuze, St. Louis Kriek, St. Louis Peche, St. Louis Framboise, Timmermans Kriek, Timmermans Framboise, Timmermans Strawberry, Ter Dolen Kriek, Cuvée des Jacobins
