A POWERFUL CURRICULUM

Study what speaks to you.

No matter what discipline you pursue, you’ll look at it from every angle, connecting different modes of thinking and seemingly unrelated ideas. Choose a major or majors, combine interests, or forge your own path altogether.

“I chose Skidmore because I couldn’t find any other place that encouraged me to explore all of my different interests and develop new ones. Through my experiences here — in class and in conversation — I’ve discovered that I really can merge my passions and develop a completely new field that doesn’t exist. My dream, as a result of working for Skidmore’s student-run Emergency Medical Services program, is to work with EMS providers from a psychotherapy standpoint.”

A different kind of collaboration. More than four in five Skidmore students delve into internships, research or experiential educational opportunities.

When it comes to summer-funded internships and faculty-student collaborative research projects, hundreds of students receive grants to complete experiences that they otherwise might not afford. Annually, some $10 million in alumni, foundation, government and other funding supports this creative student work. The best part? Awards are available each summer, providing all students the opportunity to pursue their dreams.

If there’s one thing that Skidmore students share, it’s the ability to bring creative thought to life in their own individual ways. Some bring this ability with them, and some discover it while they’re here. Either way, an appreciation for creative thought helps you develop a distinctive sense of self. You decide who you want to be — then go for it.

“I arrived at Skidmore from South Africa afraid I might not belong. Now, if I could float over campus and look down at my life here from 30,000 feet, I’d see amazing people from all over the world — Ecuador, Morocco, Connecticut, California and everywhere in between. So many of them I can call friends, family, even brothers and sisters because they fully appreciate and celebrate who I am.” — NKOSINGIPHILE “NK” MABASO ’19 Sociology and Computer Science Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy Graduate

Let’s eat.

At Murray-Aikins Dining Hall, we get creative with the traditional dining experience. From a late-night dinner dedicated to waffles to help students de-stress during finals and Skidmore’s weekly Chicken Finger Friday to themed meals inspired by the likes of Harry Potter and Game of Thrones — our award-winning chefs and “D-Hall” staff provide unmatched variety. Open til 11 p.m. most nights, Murray-Aikins offers freshly prepared menu items and à la carte offerings ranging from vegan to international. We go trayless to cut down on food waste and get maximum seasonal use of veggies from our campus garden.

From our own solar field (left) to student-led clubs, projects and courses, we’re creating sustainable programs to ensure that our ecosystems, and those beyond, are cleaner and healthier. In recent years, our community garden (above) has produced over 6,000 pounds of organic food for the dining hall, and we’ve saved more than 85,000 pounds of food waste from the landfill, thanks to our studentrun composting program. We’ve also cut 45% of greenhouse gas emissions since 2000, thanks to renewable energy and efficiency efforts.

“ As a studio art and math double major and a four-year athlete, I feel that there are very few things in the world you can do with only one skill set or mindset. From their first year to their first job and beyond, students and alumni have lifetime access to on-demand resources in Skidmore’s Career Development Center (CDC) and its staff of career-support specialists. CDC supports students in realizing their career goals, achieving success — and satisfaction — in their work, and pursuing lives of purpose by providing access to resources such as:

Guidance at every stage of the job search, from networking to resume building.

Hundreds of exclusive, Skidmore-specific internships and job opportunities.

An expansive network of more than 35,000 alumni connections around the world.

Just months after Dana Naberezny ’95 (above, left) took over Tiffany & Co.’s super-charged, Jewelry Design and Innovation Workshop, she called on her alma mater’s Office of Alumni Relations and Career Development Center to find creative talent and establish an ongoing recruitment pipeline. On a campus visit, she and her team interviewed Caite Canfield ’19 (above, right), a studio art and math double major and winner of Skidmore’s top prize in jewelry and metalsmithing. A follow-up interview at the Manhattan workshop clinched a sought-after modelmaker/designer summer internship for Canfield, an amazing jumpstart to her next act — pursuing a Masters of Architecture at the Georgia Institute of Technology.

Put creative thought to work. Creative thought is more than a philosophy. It’s a practice. And when you put it in place, you’re better prepared for a meaningful career.

COURTNEY MATTISON ’08 creates detailed ceramic sculptural works inspired by the fragile beauty of coral reefs and the human-caused threats they face. A self-determined major at Skidmore in marine ecology and ceramics, Mattison uses her work to raise awareness and urge policymakers and the public to conserve our changing seas. Her sculptures have been exhibited at the American Association for the Advancement of Science and Whatcom Museum and featured in Science and Smithsonian magazines, as well as on Good Morning America, CNN and BBC. “I’ve always made a point of taking my own path,” she says. “When my high school friends were all applying to Ivy Leagues, I applied early decision to Skidmore. I guess I knew right from my first visit that Skidmore is unique; it seeks out students who want to set their own course and think creatively about their education.”

CREATIVE THOUGHT AT WORK

Take a look at how these Skidmore alumni apply creative thought in their everyday lives.

ZAZIE BEETZ ’13 is a prolific actress starring in Atlanta, Deadpool II and, more recently, Joker opposite Joaquin Phoenix. As an international student from Germany, Beetz explored acting and photography at Skidmore and continues to borrow upon those lessons. “With Skidmore’s education, I was able to honor another huge part of myself,” she explains. “I suppose that’s the beauty of a liberal arts school.” Going forward, she says, “I don’t want to just be pretty. I want to be ugly. I want to be bad and I want to be good. I want to be able to transform as I transform in my life.” Photo: Kevork Djansezian/NBC

SHEP MURRAY ’93 is a retail maverick and co-founder of Vineyard Vines, the lifestyle apparel line he founded with his brother Ian from a beachside pop-up, selling neckties from the trunk of a car. Today, the playful upscale brand is among the most popular in the country. The brothers’ unique business model eschews traditional marketing and distribution methods, which may explain why Vineyards Vines is thriving while much of the retail industry is in chaos. Murray, whose goal has always been to be “a cross between Warren Buffett and Jimmy Buffett,” concurs, arguing that what’s happening in retail now is not about evolution. “It’s a revolution.” Photo: Jamel Toppin/The Forbes Collection/Contour RA
