Submit academic interest form by May 12.

Make Scribner Seminar selections by May 12. Scribner Seminars are taught by faculty from virtually every discipline, who design seminars to highlight their own intellectual curiosities and passions. These seminars will help students begin to explore ideas, challenge assumptions, and gain firsthand experience of faculty expectations of academic rigor and excellence. A list and descriptions of fall 2022 Scribner Seminars can be found at the link below. Descriptions of the seminars are linked to the titles, and the number to the left is the section number of the course. Please note that during registration these numbers distinguish each seminar within the SSP 100 class listing. Students will receive their Scribner Seminar assignment before summer advising takes place. skidmo.re/Seminars-22

Complete Directed Self-Placement Program for Expository Writing Placement by May 19. Expository writing is a foundation for a successful college education and a foundation requirement at Skidmore. To assure that students register for an appropriate writing course, one that matches their abilities and challenges them as writers, they are required to complete the Directed Self-Placement Program for Expository Writing Placement. Students will be asked to write a short essay; reflect seriously and thoughtfully about their essay, writing process, and abilities as writers; and finally, choose the expository writing course level that is best suited for them as an incoming college writer. skidmo.re/FYE-Writing

Fulfill or complete QR Placement Diagnostic Placement by May 26.

Skidmore has an Applied Quantitative Reasoning requirement. There are several levels of quantitative reasoning at Skidmore. The Quantitative Reasoning (QR) Placement Diagnostic is designed to help place you at the appropriate level given your current quantitative reasoning skills. Note that if you scored 650 or higher on the Math SAT, 28 or higher on the Math ACT, or 570 or higher on a Math SAT Subject Test, and officially submitted your score to Skidmore, you should already have a Quantitative Reasoning placement and do not need to take the QR Placement Diagnostic. Professor Kelly Sheppard, who oversees the QR placement process, will send an e-mail to your Skidmore address by 4 p.m. EST on May 5 confirming your placement based on your standardized test scores. If you need to submit your SAT or ACT scores, please follow these instructions: skidmo.re/FYE-QR Otherwise, the deadline for completing the QR Placement Diagnostic is May 26. Note that this does not necessarily mean that you will take a quantitative reasoning course your first semester. If you have questions about this placement, Professor Sheppard can be reached by email at ksheppar@skidmore.edu.

JUNE ☐

Register for optional Pre-Orientation programs: June 1–July 6.

Participation in one of the many pre-orientation programs at Skidmore is a great way to begin the transition to college life. Whether it’s hiking in the Adirondacks, creating sculpture or doing community service, there are many ways for students to meet peers with similar interests and goals. Pre-Orientation takes place just before Orientation for all first-year students. Participation is optional but highly recommended for Pre-Orientation. Participation in Orientation is required. To apply, students need to fill out an application and will be billed through their student account automatically upon registration. There are a limited number of need-based scholarships available. For more information, email preorientation@skidmore.edu

Submit student housing questionnaire form: June 6–16.

The housing questionnaire will be emailed to all members of the Class of 2026 via their Skidmore email address. We ask that students share all of the requested information with us honestly, so that we can best meet their housing needs.

Skidmore faculty members serve as summer advisors for first-year students and will contact students (by way of Skidmore.edu email addresses) to schedule virtual meetings to discuss Scribner Seminars and fall semester course options.

Skidmore offers families the option of paying bills in monthly installments. By signing up for SCIP, families can spread each semester’s costs over four equal monthly installments. Fall semester payments begin on August 15 and end November 15. The cost for participation is $40 per semester. JULY Submit Skidmore ID card photo: July 1–August 15. Skidmore IDs are more than just a photo ID. They are door keys, meal tickets, purchase cards and more. Students will pick up their IDs when they arrive on campus. Students without IDs will face delays. Students should submit a photo for their campus ID at: skidmo.re/Skid-ID

Complete Reflection and Projection (RAP) goals exercise: July 1–August 31. As students prepare for their journey, literally and intellectually, to Skidmore, we’d like them to take some time to reflect on this moment in their lives. The first step on this journey is for students to talk to us about their current aspirations, academic and co-curricular aims, and goals for their overall education. The commencement of this “dialogue” takes place through the Reflection and Projection Project (RAP). The RAP will be used by students’ faculty advisors during Orientation and beyond to discuss their future academic plans.
