Mary Lou Bates Vice President and Dean of Admissions and Financial Aid

Upon their arrival in 2003, President Philip A. Glotzbach and Marie Glotzbach committed to expanding access for talented students from all backgrounds by increasing need-based financial aid. During their tenure, Skidmore’s financial aid budget more than tripled. In the 2019-20 academic year, Skidmore College launched an initiative to honor the Glotzbachs’ 17 years at Skidmore and their meaningful accomplishments through an effort to provide financial aid to 17 students. You and dozens of other leadership donors contributed close to $2 million in honor of Phil and Marie’s tenure. At the same time, you inspired thousands of donors to follow your lead in supporting Skidmore with 10,506 gifts in 2019-20, demonstrating their gratitude to the Glotzbachs. You are helping Skidmore continue the Glotzbachs’ legacy of providing a world-class education to the next generation of students. Thank you! Your impact through the support of this effort is felt far and wide, most importantly by the 17 scholars highlighted in this publication. Additionally, your generosity has opened the doors of Skidmore College to these talented students and will continue to do so for the next three academic years. Thank you again for the opportunity you have created and the lives you have changed. With deep gratitude,

GLOTZBACH SCHOLARS 2020

It all started with a promise... Last fiscal year we invited you to help continue Phil and Marie’s legacy of providing a world-class education to the next generation of students with a gift. Our goal was to establish funding for 17 Glotzbach Scholars, one for each year of Phil and Marie’s leadership, and to build donor participation. You answered that call and we are so grateful for your generosity. As you’ll see in the pages that follow, you’ve created opportunities that have profoundly impacted our students’ lives. The 17 scholars were funded last year and in each of the next three years thanks to over 10,500 donors and close to $2 million generously donated by our challenge group. THANK YOU

Creative Thought Matters. When I began my college search, this motto stuck with me. Four years later, it resonates even more. By saying “Creative Thought Matters,” this community continually reminds itself of a deeper conviction: that breaking into new ways of understanding supports a future that demands versatility! The ability to approach novel situations with confidence comes from having lived in a community that takes the idea of creative potential seriously. Skidmore College does this.

JACKSON HEIGHTS, NEW YORK

Skidmore has been my home away from home and has provided me with the support I need to become the person I want to be. Skidmore’s approach to higher education allowed me to pursue passions that I never even knew I had and opportunities I never knew existed for me. I am honored to be named a Glotzbach Scholar and so excited to see what else Skidmore can help me achieve.

As a first-generation, lowincome international student, the Glotzbach Scholarship has allowed me to attend an incredible institution that may have otherwise been out of my reach. Skidmore has numerous resources that enable me to start building my career. I made connections with Skidmore alumni and look forward to applying for internships, participating in the study abroad program, and taking many more interesting classes in the future here at the College. Thank you for your generous support.

When I applied to Skidmore, I was so happy to discover that donor support was available to secure the financial aid that I needed to be successful in college. I’m proud to say that because of your help, I am having a smooth experience at Skidmore.

I am humbled and honored to be named a Glotzbach Scholar. For me, this scholarship has enabled my multifaceted Skidmore journey over the last three years. I have embraced passions of mine for music, human sciences and journalism all while living in an environment where exploration is an encouraged norm. I am excited for the remainder of my senior year and all that may come after graduation, for both myself and my peers.

Skidmore has opened so many doors for me that have shaped my college experience into the most informative, experiential four years of my life. I have participated in research through the Environmental Studies and Sciences Department over the summer and abroad in Bhutan. All of the hands-on experience in my major has made me excited to pursue an occupation as an environmental scientist. Being a Glotzbach Scholar is an honor and I carry deep gratitude for all the support Skidmore has gifted me. This support has allowed me to pursue my education, foster lifelong connections and study within a welcoming and caring community.

Skidmore is my home away from home. I have grown and developed into a professional and a person I am proud of. I came to campus without much direction and am thankful to this institution for the opportunities I have had and the doors it has opened for me. I am honored to be a Glotzbach Scholar and hope to give back to the community that has given me so much.

I chose Skidmore because of the incredibly friendly and welcoming community I experienced the minute I stepped foot on campus. Since coming here, I have conducted meaningful research, challenged my views of myself and society and made lifelong friends and memories. I have developed connections with professors who have become mentors. None of this would have been possible without scholarship support. I am honored to be a Glotzbach Scholar.

NEW YORK, NEW YORK

None of my experiences at Skidmore would be possible without my financial aid package. When I think about all the friends I’ve met, the experiences I’ve had and all I’ve learned during the first half of my college experience, I realize just how valuable this scholarship is.

Skidmore has been incredibly welcoming — a community that emphasizes creativity which results in innovation and progress. That creativity begins with students and is facilitated by professors willing to listen and work through problems with us, dining hall employees working hard to keep us fed and our president giving us opportunities for all sorts of representation. As a freshman not entirely sure what I want to do with my life, I am inspired and empowered to be a part of this community. I’m thankful and honored to be a Glotzbach Scholar.

As a first-generation student, I wanted to take advantage of all the opportunities Skidmore provides. I’ve traveled to Guatemala, Uganda and Spain. I am also part of the Opportunity Program, which is why I chose Skidmore. I love seeing how the students bonded and how the staff made us feel at home. I am honored to be a Glotzbach Scholar and part of the Skidmore community.

One of my wildest dreams was to attend college. I am proud to attend a school that sees my potential and helps me realize my goals. I spent my sophomore year abroad in Madrid, Spain and recently published my first book. Both things were greatly facilitated by Skidmore’s generosity, which has removed a lot of the financial stress of attending college. To be awarded the Glotzbach Scholarship is an honor.

I never thought Skidmore could have been a possibility for me. I am proof that hard work does not go unnoticed, and it does open up new doors. Even if people do not have high expectations of me, Skidmore has taught me to have high expectations and big goals for myself. Skidmore is providing opportunities for me that always seemed impossible, including the honor of being a Glotzbach Scholar.

The Skidmore community accepts and supports me. I have made lifelong friends and created relationships with professors that would only be possible at a school like this. The prospect of the future can be daunting, but I know I have a strong alumni community behind me and a strong support system to aid with any obstacles that come my way.

TUCSON, ARIZONA

Skidmore has impacted my education by allowing me to explore a variety of different courses outside of my major and giving me the opportunity to spend a semester studying abroad in London. Being named a Glotzbach Scholar is an honor and allows me to represent my school and this community that has given so much to me.

Like many freshmen, I didn’t have the slightest inclination of what I wanted to major in or even study. Through Skidmore’s unique approach to learning, I am pursuing and discovering what I am really interested in — business and environmental studies. After graduation, I hope to explore a path in business that has a strong focus on the environment. I am deeply honored to be a recipient of a Glotzbach Scholarship, and I’m excited to see what else is in store for the remainder of my time at Skidmore.

Skidmore never fails to remind me that I can be part of a greater good — as a student, a leader, a mentee, a daughter and a scholar. Being a Glotzbach Scholar is both humbling and exciting. Skidmore will always be important to me. I plan to attend graduate school. I will also be running my company, Ndriana Agro, a Madagascar-based agribusiness providing top-quality organic import and export produce, and prioritizing the hiring of unemployed women, with the help of the award I received from the Freirich Business Plan Competition.
