It all started with a promise...
We invited you to help continue Phil and Marie’s legacy of providing a world-class education to the next generation of students with a gift.
Our goal was to establish funding for 17 Glotzbach Scholars, one for each year of Phil and Marie’s leadership, and to build donor participation. This is year three of four in sharing the impact of your support.
You answered that call and we are so grateful for your generosity.
As you’ll see in the pages that follow, you’ve created opportunities that have profoundly impacted our students’ lives.
The 17 scholars funded each year continue their education at Skidmore thanks to over 10,500 donors and close to $2 million generously donated by our challenge group.
THANK YOU
You are helping Skidmore continue the Glotzbachs’ legacy of providing a world-class education to the next generation of students. Your impact through the support of this effort is felt far and wide and your generosity has opened the doors of Skidmore College to these talented students.
Mary Lou Bates Vice President and Dean of Admissions and Financial AidScholarships remain a top priority for President Emeritus Philip A. Glotzbach and Marie Glotzbach. From the moment they arrived in 2003, they committed to expanding access for talented students from all backgrounds by increasing need-based financial aid. During their tenure, Skidmore’s financial aid budget more than tripled. Your impact in supporting the Glotzbach Scholarship is significant.
Beth Ann Post Director of Financial AidHow do you want to change the world? How will your Skidmore experience help you do that?

I want to change the world through discovery. I believe that one of the greatest things people can do is acquire knowledge as a global community through various opportunities. At Skidmore, I continue to learn and discover, investigating all I can. In Dr. Domozych’s biology lab, I was able to embrace Skidmore’s virtues and beliefs and take charge of my own education by working each day to research, design, and execute my own experiments. My quest for knowledge has just begun, and I am thrilled to continue pursuing my passions at Skidmore while building my toolbox for discovery.

I have served in student government since my first year and am now the co-vice president of inclusion and outreach. Through student government, I’ve helped to implement important changes at Skidmore, from raising the minimum wage to providing free menstrual and sexual health products. To me, changing the world is about creating a lasting impact. I want to create structures and systems that give people hope and belonging. I think about my peers, professors, and administrators who give me the confidence to pursue my dreams. That support, combined with my role in student government and as an international affairs and management and business major, have helped me understand the power of leading with compassion and love.

I would like to increase access to competitive jobs. As a first-generation international student, I understand the range of unique challenges people face when looking past graduation. My Skidmore experience has allowed me to explore opportunities I previously never thought were possible. The most important value I have learned is mentorship. Alumni and fellow students have offered their expertise to help me get a competitive internship that ultimately turned into a job offer. In the future, I look forward to offering the same support to others.

To make the world better, I want to start by making systematic change and convincing those in power to progress.
I want to major in social work, which will provide access to the systems that need improving. Skidmore is giving me an opportunity to receive new knowledge, participate in important discussions, and take part in the hands-on experiences that I need to become a social worker. Through my Skidmore education, I’m trying to benefit from every opportunity and experience that comes my way.

I want to make my community better by bringing financial literacy to underserved communities and educating the next generation on topics that generally are not covered in school. Skidmore sparked my interest in business and finance and helped me realize my ability to teach others the importance of these topics. I have also learned the value of a liberal arts education through the wide variety of courses and extracurricular activities I have been able to explore and participate in.

Skidmore makes it easy to explore multiple classes in pursuit of my career goal — to become a clinical psychologist with a focus on destigmatizing therapy. As someone who has sought therapy, I feel it is something that everyone can benefit from. While taking a developmental psychology course, I also learned that I am very interested in childhood and adolescent development. Skidmore has experienced professors and provides various opportunities to its students to help them succeed. I know that when I graduate, I will be prepared to further my education and pursue a career as a psychologist.

I would like to make a difference by working with America’s diplomatic or military policies and potentially pursuing an international focus. With challenges increasing throughout East Asia, and my own background in Asia, I’d be grateful to work in that region and help influence the United States’ policies there. My parents have experience in this work, so it feels natural to follow in their footsteps. Thanks to Skidmore’s wide variety of courses, I have taken classes about modern China as well as Medieval Europe and the Renaissance. Skidmore has also provided me the opportunity to study in Tokyo, where I’ve been able to access modern documents and records that will help me as I work toward my goals.

The art of literature has assuaged society throughout history, and especially during tumultuous times. Literature has never been more important than now, with the current challenges we find ourselves facing. It can heal, inspire, and bring people together, but with the rise of alternative entertainment, it is slowly becoming lost on us. My dream is to become a writer, and I want to use my Skidmore education to share my everlasting love of literature with the world. While my ultimate goal is to become a bestselling author, I have realized that my path in life is directing me toward teaching. Being a writer takes bravery and encouragement, and I hope I can share that with children.

Before coming to Skidmore, I could not have envisioned myself lobbying Congress or performing in an internationally celebrated music festival. But within my first year, I accomplished both. Skidmore’s academic rigor is helping me pursue my goal of attending graduate school for philosophy, and the College has provided me with an enormous network of connections. While I explore career paths in philosophy, I am also encouraged to study my other passions, such as music. Each course I take is as captivating as the next, and my Skidmore education has made me more open-minded. To change the world, we must embrace education by spreading knowledge, increasing access and awareness, and creating a more open, learned society.

I would like to bridge personal experiences and wellbeing within the business community. The liberal arts have allowed me to take courses in both the humanities and business, preparing me to make well-rounded business decisions in the future. I believe all business students benefit from exploring a variety of course offerings. I am particularly interested in creating marketing opportunities for communities that are traditionally considered unconventional and marginalized. By developing advertising that is marketed toward diverse communities, I hope I can help open minds and create more understanding.

I want to continue exploring the stories told in Black literature to better understand the lives of those afflicted by the generational trauma of slavery. Teaching about these experiences provides further opportunity for these stories to not be forgotten by generations to come. My Skidmore experience has helped me advance my understanding of society through the world of literature. When contextualizing myself as a writer and a Black man living in America, this becomes paramount. Upon graduation, I plan to teach and eventually get my Master of Fine Arts in writing.

I have always been a firm believer that you can make an impact by helping just one person and that no action is too big or too small. I want to change the world by uplifting people who are historically overlooked and underserved in society. Skidmore allows me to interact and network with so many different types of people — internally and externally. These connections afford me the opportunity to create my own community that I can go to with questions and lean on for help. The Skidmore community has become my support network, and working and volunteering at different places on and off campus has given me the confidence to know I can make a difference after graduation.

Skidmore provides numerous opportunities for undergraduates to pursue research with professors, using a range of technical equipment. I also have taken courses in a wide variety of studies, from anthropology and history to neuroscience, and each class has taught me something that I can apply to other areas. Every semester, I pick up new skills and confidence by participating in the fun, hands-on, and challenging experiences Skidmore offers. Students here strive for excellence and are encouraged at every step. I hope to offer the same inspiration and support to others, so we can all make a difference together.

Changing the world takes a collective effort, and thinking of ways to do it on your own can feel overwhelming and isolating. However, being a part of a community that is willing to support and provide for one another can be the first step toward leaving your mark on the world. Through the relationships I build at Skidmore, I connect with people in ways that spread positivity. Every day, I am encouraged to learn and grow alongside those around me. My time at Skidmore will propel me into other environments where I can reach more people with the same intent to help create a more positive world.
Recognizing the Glotzbach Scholars who are now Skidmore alumni and out in the world making a difference, living lives of consequence.
