HONORS CONVOCATION A C A D E M I C AWA R D S A N D P R I Z E S
Spring Two Thousand Twenty-one
CONGRATULATIONS You have been chosen by your faculty as the recipient of one or more academic prizes.
Honors Convocation – the gathering of our community to celebrate the academic achievements of our most talented and creative students – stands as one of the great traditions at Skidmore College, and is one of my favorite moments in the academic year. Faculty deliberate in their departments and programs and select the students who best exemplify the specific prizes and awards that are part of the fabric of our institution. Then we convene as a community of faculty, students, and staff – this year a bit differently than in the past for health and safety reasons – in an evening that is a highlight at the end of the spring semester. After opening remarks by President Conner that set the tone for the festivities, faculty honored by their own peers as the Ciancio (teaching), Moseley (scholarship), and Roth (service) winners in 2020 and 2021 will offer brief remarks. As a student of ancient Mediterranean studies, I am especially drawn to what the Greeks valued in an individual: timê (τίμη), honor or esteem, and aretê (ἀρετή), excellence. Let us thus applaud, and celebrate, the students whom we honor and esteem this year for their excellence.
Michael Arnush Associate Dean of the Faculty for Student Academic Affairs
