A POWERFUL CURRICULUM

Study what speaks to you. No matter what discipline you pursue, you’ll look at it from every angle, connecting different modes of thinking and seemingly unrelated ideas. Choose a major or majors, combine interests, or forge your own path altogether.

“Skidmore allowed me to pursue science and dance, while most other colleges would have forced me to choose between my two passions. I was also able to study abroad during my first year — a dream of mine — thanks to the London First-Year Experience. Skidmore truly encouraged me to do it all!” — KATIE YAN ’22 Ph.D candidate, Pennsylvania State University

5

Open yourself up to

new possibilities. A lot happens between your first day and graduation, which is why we encourage you to explore different courses and disciplines. You will have time to choose a major or two, add a minor, or craft an academic path that works for you. Just know that whatever it is, we’ll work with you to make sure it’s authentic to you and practical for the professional world.

The nearby Adirondack Mountains are a staple for Outing Club trips and a great escape for hiking enthusiasts. 6

Meet your people. Find your place.

First moments and memories. First classes and connections. The First-Year Experience (FYE) is a comprehensive welcome to college life that starts the minute you enroll at Skidmore. Above: First-year students whitewater raft in the nearby Adirondack Mountains during an off-campus pre-orientation program. “Pre-O” is an optional add-on and kick-off to your First-Year Experience. With choices for all levels of adrenaline-seekers or mindful-meditators, it’s just one of many ways to make immediate friends and memories at Skidmore. 8

From summer advising and creative pre-orientation and orientation offerings to engaging academics and thoughtful support programs, we’ll help you land in your comfort zone, then challenge you to step out of it. FYE is your opportunity to: ■ Try, fail, and try again – with

encouragement and without judgment.

■ Get to know Skidmore, your professors,

our academic standards, and our liberal arts curriculum.

■ Make lasting connections with your faculty

advisor, peer mentor, and peers.

■ Learn where you can go and who you

can call on for help, personally and academically.

Your First-Year Experience begins in the summer before your first year, when you’ll choose your Scribner Seminar — one of 40 small-group, interdisciplinary courses designed to help you explore ideas, challenge assumptions, and think critically. Here’s a sampling of some of the 2023 seminars: • Jane Austen, Inc. • Sport, Self and Society • The World Through Maps • Dynamics of Chaos • The Business of Food • Music: Mix and Remix • Stress and the Human Brain • Digital Life • Real Democracy • The Nature/Nurture Myth • Randomness, Logic, and the Universe • Mixed Race on Stage & Film • The Space of Modern Thought • The Science of Global Cities You can also spend your first semester in London! Learn more at: S KIDMO.RE/LON DON FY E

“My Scribner Seminar and the FYE program were my first introductions to just how much Skidmore faculty care about you. For example, to welcome us into the community, my professor cooked dinner for my whole seminar and treated us as family. It was the start of a series of experiences that helped me feel at home in a new place.” — KELBY WITTENBERG ’23 Anthropology and Psychology 9

Change your view of the world ... and let it change you. 50% of Skidmore students study abroad.

Skidmore offers 120 programs in 45 countries, including our London First-Year Experience Program. Everything you learn abroad helps shape your ability to reason, relate, and perceive things differently. It’s about building cross-cultural competencies and connections as a global citizen — something that goes a long way, no matter how far you travel. From faculty-led travel seminars to domestic off-campus opportunities, these programs are purposely linked to Skidmore’s curriculum and are meant to support majors and minors. You can use all your financial aid for off-campus study for up to two semesters — it travels with you!

Our founder, Lucy Skidmore Scribner, believed the best education is one that challenges you to

Engage your hand and mind. So she built a school that empowered students to apply theoretical concepts and experiences to real-world challenges. Over a century later, these core beliefs are woven into the fabric of life at Skidmore.

OUT OF THE BOX AND OFF CAMPUS

From research and internships to capstones, performances, volunteerism, and service — every single Skidmore student, personally and academically, uses their “hand and mind.”

• Animal behaviorist, Smithsonian National Zoo

■ INTEGRATIVE EXPERIENCES

are a big part of all majors, ranging from civic engagement and research to study abroad, internships, capstones, and performances.

■ VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES

are abundant. Hundreds of students give back every semester, including student clubs and every athletic team.

■ SUMMER SKILL-BUILDING

including internships, apprenticeships, job shadows, and faculty-student collaborative research — can become paid experiences through College grants.

Students also create and manage virtually all co-curricular events and programs, including concerts, exhibits, student government, tutoring, and wellness coaching.

12

Recent integrative experiences include:

• Glacier researcher, Juneau Ice Field • Refugee advocate, Kenya • Anti-racism documentary filmmaker, New York City • Lab assistant, Boston Children’s Hospital • Translator, U.S.-Mexico border • Curatorial assistant, Skidmore’s Tang Teaching Museum • Comedian in training, The Second City, Chicago • Hospice aide, Saratoga Springs • Printmaking apprentice, Tamarind Institute • Journalist, NPR Washington, D.C.

SKIDMORE TRADITIONS

Feel the vibe. Experience altogether different, all-around celebrations of all things Skidmore.

CLUB FAIR The Student Government Association Club Fair is one of our biggest, and most loved, campus events. Part festival and part registration fair, this biannual tradition is full-on fun as 100+ clubs audition for your participation.

UJIMA

SKIDMANIA

The annual Ujima Fashion Show is run entirely by students and supports the student club’s mission of celebrating awareness of African, African American, and Caribbean cultures. While every year is unique, each show highlights students’ talent and creativity, from design to performance.

For more than two decades, student and faculty musicians have offered their own interpretations of some of the most popular songs from the past, starting with the Beatles and now encompassing a broader range of music from 50 years ago. The concerts quickly sell out, with proceeds supporting community organizations.

Home is where you create it. Residential life is an essential part of the Skidmore experience and the heart of our tight-knit community.

Residence halls, where you and your suitemates share a bathroom, primarily house first- and second-year students. First-year students can expect one or two roommates. Some floors are special interest, including those that are gender-inclusive, global, multicultural, substancefree, and LGBTQ+-oriented.

BEST COLLEGE FOOD IN THE U.S. Business Insider

Let’s eat. At Murray-Aikins Dining Hall, we get creative with the traditional dining experience. From a late-night waffle dinner to help students de-stress during finals and weekly Chicken Finger Fridays to themed meals inspired by the likes of Harry Potter and Game of Thrones — our award-winning chefs and “D-Hall” staff provide unmatched variety. Open until 11 p.m. most nights, Murray-Aikins offers freshly prepared menu items and à la carte offerings ranging from vegan to international. We go trayless to cut down on food waste and get maximum seasonal use of veggies from our campus garden.

“D-Hall adds something irreplaceably special to my life at Skidmore. It is one of the College’s most brilliant gems. I love it. And I’m certainly not the only one who feels this way.” – HARRY MOONEY ’21 History and Philosophy 28

When we say “award-winning chefs,” we mean it. Skidmore’s Dining Services team has earned seven consecutive American Culinary Federation gold medals for culinary excellence.

SUPREMO’S: Stone oven-hearth pizza EMILY’S GARDEN: Vegetarian and vegan items CORNER DELI: Sandwiches, wraps, paninis BAKERY: Fresh-baked breads, muffins, cookies, and more DO-IT-YOURSELF STATION: Omelettes, waffles, tacos DINER: Soups and rotisserie items SEMOLINA’S: Pasta-related meals GLOBAL CAFÉ: International foods NOODLE BAR: Veggies, protein, toppings, and broth CEREAL STATION: Cereal, bagels, and more 29

Sustainability It’s much more than just “going green.”

Skidmore earned a STARS Gold Sustainability Rating! The College’s standout submission detailed our Racial Justice Initiative and partnership on the Palmertown Range trails network, demonstrating how sustainability intersects with equity, access, and community.

30

Skidmore’s Hoop House, an extension of our Community Garden, is a space for growing winter greens such as kale and spinach for consumption by the Skidmore community through Dining Services.

From our own solar field to courses, internships, and student-led projects, we’re testing and modeling creative solutions for a more just, sustainable society. In recent years, Skidmore’s community garden has produced over 7,000 pounds of organic food for the dining hall, our student-run composting program has saved more than 140,000 pounds of food waste from the landfill, and our free campus bike-share program has given students a convenient way to get around town. We’ve also cut 52% of greenhouse gas emissions since 2000, thanks to renewable energy and efficiency efforts. View our interactive sustainability map: SKIDMO.RE/GREENMAP

Travel & Leisure calls Saratoga Springs one of

“America’s best college towns.”

32

We just call it home. Saratoga Springs is a beautiful, bustling small city with nightlife, galleries, shops, parks, coffeehouses, and restaurants. Dubbed the “Spa City,” it’s known for its focus on health, history, and horses. Saratoga Springs is home to the nation’s oldest operating thoroughbred racecourse. The nearby Adirondacks, Berkshires, and Green Mountains provide lots of recreational opportunities, including some of the best skiing and hiking in the Northeast. Plus, it’s only a three-hour drive to Boston, Montreal, or New York City, and two hours to Lake Placid, home of the 1980 Winter Olympics.

It’s an ideal location for creative thought to thrive.

Creative thought is more than a philosophy, it’s a practice. And when you put it in place, you’re bound to stand out. Because big thinkers attract big opportunities. Take a look at how these alumni found their versions of success by applying creative thought in their work and lives.

Skidmore graduates put creativity to work in their fields and our world every day.

MIKE NATTER ’08 is a busy, board-certified internal medicine physician and endocrinologist at a major academic hospital in New York City. It doesn’t leave a lot of time for drawing, but he finds time, here and there, to sketch and regain his balance. Initially an art major, a psychology class during his sophomore year got him “hooked on neuropsychology.” After realizing science and math were not too daunting, he had an epiphany during his junior year: He wanted to be a doctor. Says Natter, “I have made it where I am today because of my time at Skidmore. I was encouraged to explore both of my interests: science and art. For me, one informs the other.”

SHAY KOLODNEY ’21 helped ban polystyrene in her high school and inspired larger sustainability practices in her hometown. That experience — taking a stand and making a difference — was a big reason she saw herself at Skidmore. It was also how she ended up flying to work at former Vice President Al Gore’s Caney Fork Farms in Tennessee. There, she joined Skidmore faculty in pioneering carbon research to ultimately build an incentive program for farmers to use their fields to pull carbon out of the air. The work also landed her a job after graduation as the farm’s first-ever research coordinator.

CREATIVE THOUGHT AT WORK

ZAZIE BEETZ ’13 is a prolific actress starring in FX’s Atlanta (for which she received a nomination for a Primetime Emmy Award), Marvel’s Deadpool 2, Warner Bros.’ Joker, and a Jay-Z–produced western called The Harder They Fall. As an international student from Germany who grew up in Washington Heights, Beetz majored in French and explored acting and photography at Skidmore. “With Skidmore’s education, I was able to honor huge parts of myself,” she explains. “I suppose that’s the beauty of a liberal arts school.” As for her future acting gigs, she says, “I want to be able to transform as I transform in my life.” Photo: Kevork Djansezian/NBC

SHEP MURRAY ’93 is a retail maverick and co-founder of Vineyard Vines, the lifestyle apparel line he founded with his brother Ian from a beachside pop-up, selling neckties from the trunk of a car. Today, the playful upscale brand is among the most popular in the country. The brothers’ unique business model eschews traditional marketing and distribution methods, which may explain why Vineyard Vines has thrived while much of the retail industry has been in chaos. Murray, whose goal has always been to be “a cross between Warren Buffett and Jimmy Buffett,” concurs, arguing that what’s happening in retail now is not about evolution. “It’s a revolution.” Photo: Jamel Toppin/The Forbes Collection/Contour RA
