The President’s Society is a group of dedicated alumni, parents, families, and friends who provide life-changing opportunities for our students and faculty. Through their generosity and confidence in Skidmore, these leadership donors set a standard for giving that inspires the entire College community.

Dear President’s Society Members, Last year, 1,375 members of the Skidmore community made a President’s Society gift. The impact of our collective generosity is evident across campus each and every day. Together, we’ve advanced projects including the Billie Tisch Center for Integrated Sciences and the McCaffery-Wagman Tennis and Wellness Center, enabled exhibitions at the Frances Young Tang Teaching Museum and Art Gallery, supported our incredible student-athletes, and funded invaluable student research, internships, and other experiential opportunites. Most notably, we’ve helped the College meet 100% of the demonstrated financial need of all students as they pursue their studies and discover their passions on campus. Through your philanthropic leadership, you are helping shape our future and lighting the way for alumni, families, and friends in the years to come. Thank you for your steadfast belief that “Creative Thought Matters” and your investment in Skidmore. Warmly,

As president, Marc C. Conner has prioritized Skidmore’s commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion, particularly through the introduction of its Racial Justice Initiative, and completed an ambitious Campus Master Planning process that will guide campus planning for the next decade and beyond, informing future strategic planning to steward Skidmore’s resources and best align the College’s priorities. He also steered the College through the many challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic. An innovative leader of interdisciplinary academic programs, a longtime advocate of diversity and inclusion initiatives, and a widely published professor of English, President Conner joined Skidmore College following 24 years at Washington and Lee University in Virginia, where he had most recently served as provost and chief academic officer from 2016 to 2020. President Conner has published extensively on modern American, African American, and Irish literature. His dozens of essays and eight books on literature include, The Selected Letters of Ralph Ellison, which The New York Times Book Review named a notable book of 2020. He has also produced three lecture series for The Great Courses on Shakespeare and on Irish Literature. His fondest teaching experience has been taking students to Ireland for an intensive study-abroad program, an experience he will repeat at Skidmore in the spring of 2024.

To the ancient Greeks, the high, rugged peak of Mount Parnassus signified accomplishments of the highest order. For the highest achievement in giving, Skidmore College proudly recognizes those who have contributed one million dollars or more with membership in the Parnassus Society.

Luke Huber ’85 When Luke Huber came to Skidmore College, he was attracted by the many and diverse courses of study at a liberal arts college. The campus was comparatively modern, and above all, Skidmore was a welcoming place to be. Since then, Luke’s long and continuing relationship with Skidmore has been truly inspiring. He has consistently put the College’s priorities at the forefront through his time and expertise. He has been a member of the President’s Leadership Council since 2014, has served as the longtime Class of ’85 President’s Society chair, and is a class agent. Luke is also a member of the Legacy Society. Luke has made a powerful impact through his gifts as well to support scholarships and financial aid, the Skidmore Fund, and the Billie Tisch Center for Integrated Sciences. In 2018, the Huber Sculling Pavilion, as part of the Valentine Boathouse Renovation and Expansion Project, was named in recognition of another gift. Sharing Skidmore’s commitment to enhance its athletic facilities with a focus on the health and well-being of all students, Luke has most recently contributed to the McCaffery-Wagman Tennis and Wellness Center.

— 10 —

Luke found it easy to be involved in new college experiences, such as rowing. During his first two years, the men’s rowing team was a student club before it became a college team sport that he also participated in as a junior and senior. The men’s team today is a nationally ranked Division III sport at Skidmore. He also served as a resident assistant, which provided additional opportunities to connect and realize the diversity among Skidmore’s students. Experiences like these showed him the richness of Skidmore in its students, faculty, and staff. Luke, who was raised and still lives in Maine, earned his degree in psychology at Skidmore. He is founder and CEO of Triangle Group LLC, which specializes in custom-home construction, services, and solutions and has gradually expanded into real-estate development. Luke grew up in a multigenerational family business environment. His great grandfather, who immigrated from former Prussia, established the J.M. Huber Corporation in 1883. The company, which remains a family business, is a global supplier of numerous industrial products and engineered materials. Luke’s mother, Sherry Huber, was a member of the Maine House of Representatives. His father, David Huber, who served as vice president and director of J.M. Huber Corporation, was a member of both the Maine House of Representatives and the Senate.

“Skidmore College offered a great deal of different experiences, and I found both the liberal arts and science-based courses I took to be very helpful in navigating so many different aspects of our society over the last several decades. I continue to find many aspects of Skidmore worthy of my support, and I enjoy making a difference whenever I can for a higher education institution with a progressive model that I believe in.” — Luke Huber ’85

Kathleen Pontius Melligon ’81 P’18 and John Melligon ’81 P’18 For longtime supporters John Melligon and Kathleen “Kathy” Pontius Melligon, giving back to Skidmore College in so many ways affirms their deep commitment to the entire Skidmore community. An investor and former Wall Street corporate executive, John has been lending his expertise to Skidmore for years. As a former member of the College’s Board of Trustees (2015-2023), he held leadership roles on several key committees, including as a member of the Creating Our Future Campaign Executive Committee, vice chair of the Budget, Finance and Infrastructure Committee, and member of the Advancement and Audit committees. In 2021, Skidmore also honored him with an Outstanding Service Award.

— 12 —

Deeply devoted to Skidmore athletics, John has served on various Friends of Skidmore Athletics (FOSA) committees. As a FOSA co-founder, he helped to usher in a new appreciation of the student-athlete experience. Playing on the lacrosse team has been among his most memorable student experiences at Skidmore. The lifelong friendships forged with teammates, he reflects, are the source of some of his most enduring bonds. A welcoming presence at countless campaign events, FOSA outings, president’s receptions, celebration weekends, and regional gatherings, John continues to be one of Skidmore’s most stalwart and influential ambassadors. A political science major who minored in business management, John has been a judge and panelist for several career counseling events and a fundraising and reunion volunteer for his class. Kathy, who majored in nursing, became an RN. Recognizing the advantages of the strong science education given to her by Skidmore’s nursing program, Kathy is particularly excited to see the Billie Tisch Center for Integrated Sciences (BTCIS) coming to completion, along with its prominent “Skidmore Department of Nursing Pioneers in Science” display. John and Kathy served on the Parents Council and co-chaired the Senior Family Project. Their son, Christopher Melligon ’18, majored in management and business and played on the lacrosse team. The Melligon family also includes daughters Alexandra and Samantha and her husband, Tommy. John and Kathy’s charitable giving more recently has supported the Skidmore Fund, the lacrosse program, and the BTCIS. Longtime advocates for athletic facilities for the Thoroughbreds, they are also involved at a leadership level in fundraising efforts for the new McCaffery-Wagman Tennis and Wellness Center.

“Having first met at Skidmore, we have especially fond memories of our time at college. Skidmore has long been a part of the entire Melligon family adventures, with visits to campus for alumni weekends and other events over the years. With our son, Chris, attending Skidmore and playing on the lacrosse team, we continued to enjoy family time on the sidelines and in town. We’re thrilled to see the changes and continued growth of the College.” — Kathleen Pontius Melligon ’81 P’18 and John Melligon ’81 P’18

The Sands Family Foundation Rob Sands ’81, Bill Caleo ’99, and Fitzhugh Karol ’04 The Sands family legacy of giving and community involvement began with the late Marvin and Mickey Sands and continues today with their children and grandchildren. The Sands Family Foundation is focused on philanthropy in the areas of education, arts, and healthcare. Skidmore has experienced the enormous positive impact of the Foundation’s contributions over the years in the form of scholarships and financial aid, along with support for the arts, entrepreneurship, career development, and the Skidmore Fund. In addition, the Foundation’s support for internships not only enriches students’ learning experiences but also bridges the gap between academia and the professional world. The Sands Family Foundation’s most recent contribution to Skidmore is the groundbreaking $10 million initiative in support of the College’s commitment to a liberal arts experience that fosters creativity, innovation, and entrepreneurial thinking among students. The initiative includes a $5 million one-to-one matching pledge that, coupled with additional matching gifts, has given rise to the Sands Family Foundation Initiative for Creativity, Innovation, and Entrepreneurship at Skidmore College. Already, support from the initiative has begun transforming the campus into a hub for entrepreneurial creativity, collaboration, and mentorship. The inaugural three-day StartUp Skidmore skill-building workshop and competition brought together students from a variety of majors and class years—all united by a common interest in entrepreneurship and learning from knowledgeable alumni mentors and faculty members with proven records of success. StartUp Skidmore is the latest in an extensive constellation of curricular and co-curricular entrepreneurial opportunities at the College. — 14 —

The faces behind the Sands Family Foundation include Rob Sands ’81, Bill Caleo ’99, and Fitzhugh Karol ’04, who have maintained close ties to their alma mater. Their deep involvement and generous support continue to advance Skidmore’s creative, inclusive, and interdisciplinary education. A native of the Rochester, NY area, Rob Sands joined the family business in 1986, serving in a number of roles with increasing responsibility, including as executive vice president and general counsel. He was company president and CEO for 12 years, from 2007 until 2019, and most recently served as executive chair of the board. He remains on the board, providing strategic leadership for long-range goals, strategies, plans, and policies. A philosophy major at Skidmore, Rob received his Juris Doctorate from Pace University School of Law. Bill Caleo, a business major at Skidmore who attained his MFA in acting from Southern Methodist University, gravitated toward his entrepreneurial aspirations as a real-estate developer. He cofounded The Brooklyn Home Company, a residential and hospitality development firm based in Brooklyn, NY, as well as The Jackson Home Company, a boutique home building development company in Jackson, WY. Bill serves on the Skidmore College Board of Trustees. Also part of the Sands family is Fitzhugh Karol, an art major at Skidmore who received his MFA from the Rhode Island School of Design. Fitzhugh is an award-winning sculptor best known for his large-scale public artworks in steel and wood as well as ceramics. He has exhibited nationally and internationally, including at the Frances Young Tang Teaching Museum and Art Gallery at Skidmore, The LongHouse Reserve in East Hampton, NY, and Sculpture by the Sea in Australia. He and his wife, Lyndsay Caleo Karol, are also cofounders of The Brooklyn Home Company.

“The Sands Family Foundation believes that investing in people and their education is one of the best ways to ensure that our communities and the institutions that serve them are being led by caring, critical thinkers, innovators, and achievers. We are pleased to partner with Skidmore in helping to realize this mission promise.” — The Sands Family Foundation — 15 —

Ann Schapps Schaffer ’62 and Melvyn Schaffer Ann Schapps Schaffer is an ardent supporter of Skidmore College, particularly the Frances Young Tang Teaching Museum and Art Gallery, and all things art. Both her parents adored Skidmore, and she fondly remembers times with her father at Happy Pappy weekends. She also played tennis with President Val Wilson and had many professors who enriched her education. Ann and husband Mel have attended all of her college class reunions, including her 60th reunion in 2022. Ann, who majored in Romance languages at Skidmore, was president of the National Student Association and editor of Skidmore Scope. After graduation, she worked at the United Nations, utilizing the language skills she perfected at Skidmore. She went on to tutor students in Spanish, French, and Italian. Ann frequented museums while growing up, but her interest in art, especially contemporary art, developed after college—a passion she shares with Mel. As a seasoned art collector, she is highly regarded in the art world, serving on boards and leadership committees for distinguished institutions that have included The Museum of Modern Art, Montclair Art Museum, The Jewish Museum, United Jewish Appeal, Visual Arts Center of New Jersey, — 16 —

The Guggenheim Museum, and Independent Curators International. She is also a respected advisor and teacher to young art collectors, and she and Mel open their home collection to museum and charity groups on a regular basis. Mel, a graduate of Cornell University, is chairman and CEO of Trademark Plastics Corp., a plastics raw material distribution company he founded in 1977. The couple’s shared passion for contemporary art has resulted in the Ann and Mel Schaffer Family Collection, which has become an extensive assemblage of 20th- and 21st-century art. They have donated many paintings, prints, and photographs to the Tang. In addition to gifts of art, they have supported the Jack Shear Endowed Fund at the Tang, Glotzbach Scholars, Friends of the Tang, the Skidmore Fund, the Billie Tisch Center for Integrated Sciences, and diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives. Ann joined the Skidmore College Board of Trustees in 2019. She co-chairs the Advancement Committee and serves on the Academic Affairs and the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion committees. An enthusiastic supporter of the Tang, she has been a member of the Tang’s National Advisory Council since its opening in 2000 and serves as co-chair. In 2021, Ann and Mel’s support of the Tang was recognized with the naming of the lobby in their honor. The couple have two sons and daughters-in-law, along with five grandchildren. They recently celebrated their 60th anniversary in Saratoga Springs, including on the Skidmore campus, and are further celebrating with a trip to Japan.

“My parents taught me the necessity of giving to charity. I also learned about the importance of treasuring every moment from my mother, who passed away at the age of 106. On weekends, when my friends would be sleeping late, my mother would come into my room, snap open the shades, and tell me, ‘The day is too precious to waste!’ I never forgot her enthusiastic ritual, and I always try to make every day count.” — Ann Schapps Schaffer ’62

Susan Hayward Donahue ’73 and Douglas Donahue Especially close to Susan Hayward Donahue’s heart is knowing that economically disadvantaged students can attain a college education. The scholarship she received enabled her to attend Skidmore—something she has not forgotten. Susan and her husband, Douglas “Digger” Donahue, are longstanding, generous supporters of scholarship aid through the Skidmore Fund and an endowed scholarship fund at the College. More recently, they have contributed to Skidmore’s Creativity, Innovation, and Entrepreneurship initiative and the McCaffery-Wagman Tennis and Wellness Center. Susan has also served as a volunteer for her class.

— 18 —

Her life’s work has been at the nexus of health care and equity, particularly in the social entrepreneurial space, helping organizations with strategic growth, governance, board building, branding, and marketing. Susan has chaired national boards, such as Health Leads, which works at the intersection of poverty and health care, and Beyond Conflict, an international organization that helps societies find peaceful resolutions to international conflicts. Susan also founded three local nonprofit organizations and has been deeply involved as a trustee both at the Boston Medical Center and Boston’s Museum of Fine Arts. Before shifting her focus to the nonprofit sector, she was a marketing executive for BankBoston, Stop & Shop, and Mobil Oil Corporation. Digger is a partner and the former managing partner at global financial firm Brown Brothers Harriman. Susan and Digger have three children and a growing circle of grandchildren. Susan, an English major at Skidmore who earned her Certificate of Special Studies at Harvard University, is part of a broad Skidmore legacy family, including her sisters Wendy Hayward ’84 and Dana Hayward Hooper ’78, and in-laws Dorothy Dutton Donahue ’47 P’83 P’82, Daphne Donahue Hoffman ’83, and Dale Donahue O’Brien ’82.

“Scholarship aid opened the door to a world of opportunities for me at Skidmore College, and both Digger and I are deeply committed to paying it forward. Education has the power to transform lives, and we are delighted that we have been able to play a part in helping aspiring students succeed at Skidmore, regardless of their economic circumstances.” — Susan Hayward Donahue ’73
