At Skidmore, no matter what you choose to study, you’ll study it from every angle. Skidmore has more than 300 faculty members, which translates to an 8:1 student-to-faculty ratio. No one discipline dominates. Rather, you’ll connect different modes of thinking and ideas from multiple fields to find deeper, more meaningful answers. You’ll discover new approaches to address age-old questions.

Together, we’re more than one school of thought. Here at Skidmore, the arts link disciplines, inspire ideas and create connections. At the Tang Teaching Museum and Art Gallery, a show called Sixfold Symmetry: Pattern in Art and Science is the perfect example of collaboration in action. Curated by nine professors and five students from different departments, the interdisciplinary exhibit explores how human beings create and manipulate patterns and why we’re so obsessed with them. By combining aspects of math, history, Spanish, computer science, psychology, music, biology and religious studies, art reveals the bigger picture.

WHAT’S DIFFERENT

“There is a common theme in academia that the humanities and sciences must be held separately. By studying both neuroscience and English, I’ve come to understand that science is full of art, just as art is inherently scientific. I’m able to make connections between my two areas of study that allow me to better understand my interests and to experience the world more colorfully.” —

6 Chris Malvicini used a GoPro camera to record all of his summer research as he dove off the coast of Salaki Island in the Philippines.

A different kind of collaboration. Almost four in five Skidmore students delve into internships, research or experiential educational practices. For summer funded internships and collaborative research projects, hundreds of students receive grants to complete experiences that they otherwise could not afford. Annually, some $10 million in government, foundation, alumni and other funding support this critical student work. The best part? Awards are available every summer, providing every student the opportunity to pursue their dreams.

Students Sinhchhinh Lor and Siyu Chen served as interns at Soteryx, a Saratoga-based digital security firm.

Big ideas wanted. Every semester, students from all majors are selected into the Skidmore-Saratoga Consulting Partnership (SSCP), an advanced management and business practicum that provides pro bono consulting services to regional businesses and not-for-profits such as Death Wish Coffee Co., Saratoga National Bank and Saratoga Performing Arts Center. Deliverables to boards of directors and senior management include highly professional presentations highlighting financial analyses, marketing research, organizational insights and strategic recommendations. SSCP prepares students for positions with leading consulting firms including Deloitte, IBM, KPMG and Ernst & Young. Skidmore’s super-engaged alumni network helps make these opportunities possible. Seth McEachron ’04 hosts an SSCP event at his company, Battenkill Valley Creamery, home to some of the highest-quality milk in New York State.

What’s your story? The ability to tell an evidence-based story in a clear, creative and compelling way has never been more important or accessible.

Melding students’ passions and pursuits with the traditions and techniques of documentary storytelling, the John B. Moore Documentary Studies Collaborative (MDOCS) challenges and inspires Skidmore’s student documentarians to shape the future through hands-on work. As a first-year English major, Emily Rizzo discovered MDOCS Storytellers’ Institute and soon found the opportunity to merge her writing, filmmaking and audio recording interests to reflect her work in social justice. Her finished project was a mixed-media piece that explored privilege and the influence of race in intergroup relations.

Emily (above left with homestay sisters Vuyiswa Pamela Ndlimande and Nomthi Ntanzi) continued her explorations in storytelling as she traveled to South Africa and interned with the award-winning Big World Cinema company. “I developed my storytelling skills, learned the ins and outs of producing social justice films and the small details of postproduction,” Emily reports.

A MATTER OF PERSPECTIVES

WHAT DID YOU LEARN ABROAD?

“I learned how much I take my freedom of expression for granted! America is wonderful because of our differences. It took leaving the country for me to realize that.” KATHERINE ANZOLA FRENCH

“What if family is everyone around you? That’s how it works in the Cook Islands. Locals greet each other not just with a simple ‘hey,’ but by saying their name and asking about their lives. This experience taught me that family, above all, is what makes you you!” RENATO DORNELAS INTERNATIONAL AFFAIRS

“Knowing that I was actually going to do the first-year London program—that it was real—was the greatest feeling. I had never been on a plane or to a different country. Arriving in London was surreal. If you can go to London your first semester of college, you can go anywhere!” NANA NYANTAKYI MANAGEMENT AND BUSINESS

“Visiting Hiroshima made me think about today’s conflicts in the Middle East, the unnecessary bombings and the aftermath. It’s one thing to read about these events, but truly understanding the emotional aspects on a human level takes time and effort.” KEVIN TAN PRE-MED TRACK

It’s a major decision— keep an open mind. Still deciding what you want to study? Or maybe you know exactly what you’ll be and how you’ll make your mark on the world. A lot happens between day one and graduation day. And every experience—each class you take and classmate you talk to—can open you up to new interests and possibilities. There’s plenty of time to choose a major, change a major or piece together a major and path that matter to you. Just know that whatever it is, we’ll work with you to make sure it’s authentic to you and practical for the professional world.
