Program Guide 44TH ANNUAL CONFERENCE

NOVEMBER 5-7, 2014

Valley Forge, PA VALLEY FORGE 2014 • 1

Welcome from the Host Committee WELCOME & HOLA! On behalf of the MACUHO 2014 Host Committee, we are excited to welcome you the MACUHO 2014 Annual Conference: Connecting the Past with the Present - Celebrating our Independent Spirit. “Few places like Valley Forge evoke the spirit of patriotism and independence, represent individual and collective sacrifice, or demonstrate the resolve, tenacity and determination of the people of the United States…” This theme was selected as a way to highlight where we have been as a profession and embracing our future. We are excited to bring back the annual conference to the Southeast side of Pennsylvania in over 10 years! We wanted to bring back some old conference traditions, like having dinner on the town with colleagues and Exhibitors, while introducing some new ones, like a Regional Breakfast with a Belgium Waffle Bar. And let’s not forget our great on-site entertainment like Deuces Wild Night club exclusively for MACUHO with music and a mechanical bull! During the next three days, you’ll have the opportunity to meet new colleagues, make connections with exhibitors and sponsors, and learn new professional and personal knowledge. The Program Committee has worked diligently to select an array of program sessions that will challenge and educate you. Whether you are a new delegate or a seasoned professional, we want to make sure that you have a wonderful and welcoming conference experience. Valley Forge Radisson Hotel & Casino Resort has so many opportunities for you to enjoy and get to know the region. Take time to head over to the second largest mall in the U.S., the King of Prussia Mall, or take a stroll in the Valley Forge National Park located across from the casino resort. Don’t forget, we are in the resort that has amazing entertainment and a 24-hour food court. Please make sure to reach out to anyone on the Host Committee. We will proudly be wearing our host apparel and will be happy to assist you. This conference would not be successful without the time and dedication of the Host Committee members. We extend our gratitude to the host committee, the Host Committee Institutions, the MACUHO Executive Board and Leadership Council, the Program Committee, our sponsors, exhibitor, all the conference volunteers, and you! Like the Philly Pretzel, we are all interconnected! Enjoy the conference! Sincerely,

Licinia “Lulu” Barrueco Kaliher & Jennifer Thorpe Host Committee Co-Chairs

2 • MACUHO ANNUAL CONFERENCE

A Message from the President WELCOME HOME MACUHO! Thank you for joining us in Valley Forge, Pennsylvania for the Mid-Atlantic Association of College and University Housing Officers’ 44th Annual Conference! On behalf of your elected officers: Brooke, Olan, Joe, Laura, Josh, Derek, Shondrika, Sarah, Brian, and Conal, we trust you’ve had a safe trip and are ready for a fantastic conference!! Host Chairs, Jenn and Lulu, along with their dedicated committee members, worked tirelessly with our host hotel and other partners to provide a unique and wonderful schedule. With feedback that was provided to us, you will see that there have been some changes to the schedule. Regional Dinners will now be a breakfast! This special time is carved out every year so that you can have some personal time with your Regional Coordinators and to connect with colleagues in your area. Please make sure you plan to make it there to hear all about what your region is doing and how to get more involved. Program Chairs, David and Stephen, led a fantastic Program Committee who carefully selected educational sessions and programs which are intended to meet the needs of our Association, based on your feedback every year. I am happy to report that we had a record breaking number of submissions this year and am excited for the program slate, which is the heart of our conference! Finally, Chad has worked with our corporate partners who are sponsoring aspects of our Annual Conference and who participate in the Vendor Exhibit. We hope that you interact with our various corporate sponsors and vendor friends as they help to sustain our conference and a myriad of professional development opportunities throughout the year. As an organization committed to serve our members through professional development opportunities, networking, and current trends, I am delighted to have worked with a team of such passionate, talented, and note-worthy colleagues. It is with our continued partnership that helps us to sustain such a premier organization and produce events year to year that refresh and reteach our members what is needed to be successful in the field. I am grateful and humbled to have served this organization for the past 12 months as President. Many thanks to the host team for tireless hours of committed and commendable work! Best wishes on a vibrant, dynamic, rejuvenating conference experience! Wepa!

We advocate for inclusive amenities, such as gender inclusive restrooms, at all MACUHO events and seek to promote dialogue about all varieties of diversity topics on the Diversity Blog found on the MACUHO website. 20 • MACUHO ANNUAL CONFERENCE

WEDNESDAY 9:00 PM - 12:00 AM

ON WEDNESDAY NIGHT OF THE ANNUAL MACUHO CONFERENCE, FRIENDS AND COLLEAGUES ARE INVITED TO WHAT WILL GO DOWN AS HOPEFULLY ONE OF THE FUNNIEST AND MOST EXCITING CONFERENCE EVENTS IN RECENT MEMORY, THE DEUCES WILD MACUHO PARTY. MACUHO is planning to take over the Deuces Wild Night Club for an evening of fun, dancing, drinks, and yes, bull riding. VALLEY FORGE 2014 • 21

ABOUT THE CONFERENCE

Case Study Competition New professionals with 0-3 years of experience are invited to participate in the New Professional Case Study Competition. Contestants compete in teams of two—participants can choose a partner or be paired with one. Each team will put together a response to the prompt and will then present it to a panel of esteemed judges. The winners will receive registration for next year’s annual conference. Be sure to attend the orientation on Wednesday from 11:00 am – 12:00 pm in Hemlock if you’re interested in participating. Location: Quaker

Lisa A. Pierce Volunteer Incentive Program for Students (VIPS) Every year the MACUHO Host Committee, Recruitment & Retention Committee and Executive Board invite 10-12 undergraduate students interested in pursuing a career in Student Affairs to be a part of the Lisa A. Pierce Volunteer Incentive Program for Students. In its seventh year, this program provides an opportunity for undergraduate student staff members to learn more about the field of Student Affairs by attending the annual MACUHO conference. In exchange for volunteering and attending a special series of sessions at the conference, VIPS participants will have his/her conference registration fee waived. In 2001, Lisa A. Pierce founded a program called VIPS in the MACUHO region. As a method for recruitment, the Lisa A. Pierce VIPS Program focuses on bringing undergraduate students interested in Student Affairs to the annual MACUHO conference. Interested students must apply and be selected to attend the program. VIPS applicants are selected based upon the quality and completion of the online application, at the MACUHO website. Preference will also be given to undergraduate students in their junior or senior years, attending the program for the first time.

22 • MACUHO ANNUAL CONFERENCE

Educational Award Programs During each of the educational programs offered at the Annual Conference, you will be asked to provide feedback on the session to help determine our region’s best offerings. Presenters and facilitators receive varying awards and recognition and your participation is greatly valued. The Region’s Best Award provides incentive for quality programs and recognizes superior presenters who are not eligible for the Best Presentation by a New Professional. The chosen program will be submitted to be presented at the next ACUHO-I Conference as “MACUHO’s Region’s Best.” The Best Presentation by a New Professional Award is given to an outstanding new professional who has not presented at a regional or national conference (excluding Student Staff/Live-In Conferences). The Best 30 Minute Program Award provides incentive for those members who present during the 30 Minute sessions. These programs are offered during Program Sessions 5A & 5B.

Common Ground The Common Ground room offers a place to relax, refresh, and meet up with friends- old and new! For the 2014 conference, Common Ground will be located in the Bryn Mawr Room. Supported by the Personal & Professional Development and Diversity committees, Common Ground is a place for savory snacks and continuing conversations.

Gender Inclusive Bathrooms The Diversity Committee, with the help of the Host Committee and Valley Forge Casino and Hotel, has provided a gender inclusive bathroom for our conference attendees. People who are gender variant often say that using a conventional restroom is awkward or dangerous if their outward appearance doesn’t conform to the gender assigned to the restroom. Fortunately, several colleges are taking action to address this issue by creating gender inclusive restrooms, including New York University, Ohio University, and Towson University. Adding gender inclusive restrooms can help reduce the intimidation and harassment towards those who do not conform to a gender binary system commonly perceived by those within the United States. Colleges and universities are realizing that students, staff, and faculty are looking for campuses that support all identities. Given the private nature of using a restroom, providing gender neutrality is one way to ensure comfort and safety to your students or staff. The gender inclusive bathroom is located on the bottom floor across from Deuces Wild and down the hallway from the Exhibitor Hall located in the Independence Corridor.

ABOUT THE CONFERENCE

Charity Basket Raffle Information Each year, the Host Committee selects one local charity to benefit from the basket raffle. This year the Host Committee has selected the St. Baldrick’s Foundation. The St. Baldrick’s Foundation is a volunteer driven charity committed to funding the most promising research to find cures for childhood cancers and give survivors long, healthy lives. Worldwide, 175,000 children are diagnosed with cancer each year. And in the U.S., more children die of childhood cancer than any other disease—more than AIDS, asthma, cystic fibrosis, congenital anomalies and diabetes combined. Two-thirds of children treated for childhood cancer will suffer long-term effects from treatment including loss of hearing and sight, heart disease, secondary cancers, learning disabilities, infertility and more. St. Baldrick's began as a head-shaving event and that continues to be the signature event of the Foundation. "Shavees" ask friends and family to make donations "on their head" and in return, they attend one of thousands of volunteer-organized events around the world where they have their heads shaved in solidarity with kids fighting cancer. Since 2000 more than 230,000 shavees—including more than 22,700 women—have shaved their heads at 5,500 events, raising critical funds for childhood cancer research. More information can be found at http://www.stbaldricks.org/ and we encourage our attendees and their host institutions to learn more about supporting the St. Baldrick’s Foundation and their fantastic work. PURCHASING TICKETS FOR THE BASKET RAFFLE Each conference registration comes with one complimentary ticket. Additional raffle tickets will be sold throughout the conference. Tickets are $1 each, 8 for $5, and 20 for $10. For every $20 in tickets you purchase, you will receive a Bonus Basket drawing ticket. The Bonus Basket is only available to people who purchase $20 in tickets in one purchase. Details about the Bonus Basket will be available throughout the conference.

MAKING YOUR SUPERVISION AND PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT COUNT: SKILLS, STRATEGIES, AND CONSIDERATIONS Presented by: Matthew Shupp, Shippensburg University of Pennsylvania Location: Radnor Entry-level student affairs staff are the profession’s future and seasoned professionals must lay a strong supervisory foundation. Supervision has received little attention in the literature even though practitioners spend substantial time supervising. Although an important role, many seasoned professionals are ill prepared for this task. PROGRAMMING BEYOND RESIDENCE HALLS - PROGRAMMING FOR JUNIOR AND SENIOR RESIDENTS Presented by: Curtis Chan, The College of New Jersey Location: Hemlock Traditionally residential education focuses on programming around the residents who live in residence halls and most of programs are planned by residential education staff in the buildings. While Juniors and Seniors are focusing on their academics, or their own agenda, they might overlook their person development, which the residential education can vastly help. It’s always been a challenge for educators to change the status quo of “Juniors and Seniors take care of themselves”, and the notion that residence halls are more or less like a “dorm” because “they know everything”. I use the example of upper class experience (UCE) in The College of New Jersey (TCNJ) to demonstrate creative ways to engage students by reaching out to their life through various collaborative programming initiatives. As most of the Juniors and Seniors developed their identity of their organization, they are more involved in the projects associated. This presentation focuses on our initiatives inside or outside residence halls that we collaborate with Greek organizations, multicultural organizations and student led clubs. creates a win-win situation in which we meet the students’ education need but at the same time work along students’ agenda for their involvement.
