HISTORY & FUTURE
FROM THE VICE PRESIDENT OF FARHS, SEAN P. KILLION, MBA
HISTORY
& FUTURE
The Archbishop Ryan Alumni Association has been officially rebranded as the Friends of Archbishop Ryan High School, or FARHS.
I
n January, 2012, the Archdiocese of Philadelphia released a strategic vision for the region pertaining to catholic school education in the city of Philadelphia and its surrounding communities. As noted in the report, over the past 50 years, Catholic schools experienced a steady decline in enrollment. As the report eludes, this is not a new development. In fact, since 1964, more than 125 elementary schools have closed and only 11 have opened. 7 high schools have closed and another seven have consolidated, while only two new schools opened. The decline in enrollment is due to a confluence of factors. The overall population of the city has declined. In addition, many of today’s young Catholic families that remain have fewer children than previous generations. Over its history, Archbishop Ryan High School has seen over 30,000 graduates leave its halls and pursue their life passions, whether starting families, successfully attending college, advancing in their given professional careers. For many years, we simply assumed business as usual.
6 WINTER 2014
This all changed at the turn of the millennium. To begin, the sexual abuse scandals that materialized within the Catholic Church, in particularly Archbishop Ryan, were followed by the bleak outlook of declining enrollment and decreasing financial sustainability, the future of our alma mater was uncertain at best.
nizations, volunteer, and donate money to charitable causes. A contributing factor can certainly be attributed to the widening gap between the wealthy and poor in this country, but mostly it’s the strain on our middle class that for years have been the backbone of civic engagement in this country.
I often wondered how things got so bad and began to reflect at length on my experience at Archbishop Ryan and the impact high school had on my life. At the time the Archdiocese of Philadelphia released the Faith in the Future Blue Ribbon Commission report detailing its strategic vision, I had been enrolled in a course at Temple University about Educational Leadership for Civic Engagement and began reading about the history of civic engagement in our country, the history of the Catholic Church and its schools, and how civic engagement connects to our democratic values.
Given these broad realities and considering I had been learning more about Archbishop Ryan in the aftermath of the Father Charles scandal, I decided to reach out to the Alumni Association to support their activities and re-connect as an Alumni volunteer. I was pleased to learn that my former college roommate’s father, Charlie Koslosky, was now President of the Alumni Board and pleasantly surprised to see many of the volunteers I had known previously were still involved with the Alumni Board. They continued to offer valuable programs to engage Alumni and their focus was now on supporting the school’s fund raising efforts by soliciting donations for tuition assistance.
Research clearly shows that civic engagement has declined over the past 20 years and has threatened our democracy in several unique ways. People are less likely to get involved in their local governments, less likely to join civic and religious orga-
HISTORY & FUTURE
The Alumni Association and its Board had been speaking for several years on establishing a separate non-profit organization that could raise funds for the school without being legally connected to the high school or Archdiocese. I was glad to learn Charlie and his executive team were considering these changes. In several organizations I have been involved with establishing these separate organizations helps to protect the organization, its members, and ultimately the mission of the organization from liability related to the scandals discussed previously. Through the work of the Alumni Board, the Friends of Archbishop Ryan High School (FARHS) was established and began the work of filing the appropriate forms andpaperwork with the state to be officially recognized as a non-profit 501(c) (3) Pennsylvania corporation. As previously shared, the mission of FARHS is to promote fund raising through social and networking based events for alumni, friends, and supporters of Archbishop Ryan High School with the primary focus on providing tuition assistance for students. Like any sound organization, this process involved many discussions and we relied on the advice of Alumni, legal counsel, as well as those in the financial industry with experience working with non-profits organizations. We also worked to get the association and its officers insured as well as obtain official insurance for all of our events. We are pleased to announce that in early September 2013, FARHS was official recognized by the State of Pennsylvania as a non-profit 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organization and will soon solicit funds and donations towards achieving our goal. We are currently in the process of developing a new strategic plan with the school and in the following pages hope to share our strategic imperative with you to build support and consensus as we move forward.
One of the strategies I’ve seen in other organizations I have been involved is how strategic planning is used to ensure success. It’s not the easiest process and takes longer than I would prefer, however when the plan comes to fruition, it’s amazing to see how transformative and empowering the effect is on the organization. I know for many of us, our experience was a positive one in our lives. Our former teachers, the organizations, the many social events (sanctioned and unsanctioned), the traditions, and our friends provided us a
you about what you would support. One of the new programs we’re announcing in our new re-formatted Alumni Magazine, is the CLASS AMMASSADOR program. We’re looking to recruit up to four (4) Alumni from each class year to meet with the FARHS Board of Directors and school Administration twice a year to help us in enhancing our Alumni engagement program. This will not be a group of people helping with fundraising or making phone calls! We want you to help us engage our Alumni.

great opportunity. For me, reflecting on this experience, I asked what is our responsibility as a community to ensure that these traditions remain alive for future generations. I know not all of you will be as actively involved as others, but we do hope that you’ll stay connected. Please keep us updated with your contact information so we can send you updates. If you can afford any amount of donations, please send it along. Every little bit helps. Most importantly, if you’re still in the area, please stay involved. FARHS offers numerous ways to get involved from the annual Shore Reunion in North Wildwood to Coach® Bingo. We’re looking to add new events and annual traditions and would love to hear from
With over 30,000 Alumni we need help making connections, sharing information, and building a stronger connection. While supporting the school and FARHS the annual fund will always be an important development initiative it’s not and can’t be the only thing we do to connect with our Alumni.

FOCUS ON FAMILY
FROM THE PRINCIPAL, MR. JAMES D. MEREDITH
FOCUS ON FAMILY Blessed John Paul II once said, “As the family goes, so goes the nation and so goes the entire world in which we live.” The importance that our late Holy Father placed on the family can not be underestimated.
“THIS YEAR, WE ARE GOING TO REINFORCE THE SENSE OF FAMILY THAT IS ALIVE AND WELL HERE AT AR.” I say often that at Archbishop Ryan, we are family. We are blessed to have a strong and vibrant family here at Ryan. This family not only includes our teachers, staff, administration, and students, but also their families as well. This year, we are going to reinforce the sense of family that is alive and well here at AR. We opened the school year with a very successful Freshmen Family Mass. On December 22, we hosted our annual Ryan Family Christmas.
8 WINTER 2014
These events are only a few examples of how we will make a concerted effort to focus on family. To assist us with our efforts, we solicited many of our students. Of those who were polled, an overwhelming majority expressed an unwillingness to attend a family themed dance, such as Mother-Son, Father-Daughter, Sweetheart Dance, or something similar. To gather some additional data on this topic, we are also asking you for your input. On our website, there is a link for a brief (four questions) online survey. Please take a few moments to complete this survey so we can adequately plan for family events. If you prefer, you can also email me or drop me a note. The events listed are merely suggestions, and there is no guarantee that we will run an event on the list. We want to avoid planning an event and then canceling it due to lack of interest. Our hope is that a member of our family even suggests an exciting event that we can host. As always, thank you for your assistance. As always, I am grateful for the sacrifices you make to provide your child with a quality Catholic education and that they are part of our AR Family. Gratefully,
Mr. James D. Meredith Principal
FOCUS ON BRANDING
FROM THE PRESIDENT, MR. MICHAEL MCARDLE
A FOCUS ON
THE ARCHBISHOP RYAN BRAND Expressed in its simplest terms, the job of a high school President is to advance the mission of the school. My support staff is known as the advancement team. This past summer, the advancement team met regularly to prepare the advancement plan which outlines our work for the coming school year. During our discussions we talked about our brand and decided we wanted to use our logo and slogan more effectively in representing our school. Branding is a marketing concept which education has adapted. Our “AR” logo is immediately recognizable to our community and beyond. The team spent time discussing what do we mean when we say, “Belong, Believe, and Become.”
BELONG We belong to a community made up of students and staffs, but also parents, families and alumni. We are connected to pastors, priests, the staffs and students of our parish schools, and the Church in Philadelphia as well as churches throughout the world.
BELIEVE We strive to foster a sense of belonging that leads us to believe. We are a Faith community. Our belief in the teachings of Jesus Christ is the reason our school community exists and the foundation of all our programs.
BECOME We challenge our students to live by these beliefs, to become men and women of Faith. Everything that happens here should instruct, encourage and inspire our students to become Catholic-Christian men and women dedicated to bringing our faith and values to the larger community. Our logo is a constant reminder to ourselves and others of who we are and what we are about. We are AR! I hope and pray that we will all experience a good schoolyear during which we Belong, Believe, and Become. Sincerely,
Mr. Michael McArdle President, Archbishop Ryan High School

MAGIC We rarely have an opportunity to work MAGIC in our everyday lives. Yet, with the benefit of Employer Matching Gifts, your Ryan donation can double right before your eyes. Many of our alumni work at companies that are ‘Matching Gift’ partners. Most match at a 1:1 ratio. Watch as your $100 donation turns into a $200 donation simply with the submission of some paperwork. Then, your donation will be recognized at the higher giving level in the Annual Ryan Report. It’s a no-brainer. Make a donation, submit paperwork to your company and make MAGIC for the kids at Ryan!

JOHN QUINN ATHLETIC TRAINING CENTER On Sunday December 8 2013, a dedication ceremony that included students, staff and graduates gathered to dedicate the new John Quinn Athletic Training Center in his memory. The dedication ceremony represented the final act of a multi-year enhancement project for Ryan’s athletic facilities. Most of the funding for the project came from a state grant sponsored by then Speaker of the Pennsylvania House of Representatives Dennis O’Brien (Class of 1970) who now serves as an At Large member of Philadelphia City Council. Councilman O’Brien attended the dedication and we are grateful to him for his support of Archbishop Ryan High School throughout the years. PHOTO COURTESY OF AR FACEBOOK PAGE

FACULTY PROFILE Archbishop Ryan High School highlights Mr. Jim McCoy No other faculty member has been at Archbishop Ryan longer than Mr. Jim McCoy. He first came to Archbishop Ryan High School for Boys as a faculty member in 1967, and will be celebrating his 47th year as a teacher. That’s almost 12 generations of students. Jim hails from the East Falls Section of Philadelphia and attended Saint Bridget’s Parish. It was there that a childhood friend hung the nickname ‘Gator’ on him (after the Hanna-Barbera cartoon character) and it is a handle that is still used to call him to this day. He went to Roman Catholic High and then to LaSalle College. He joined the faulty with a number of other then recent LaSalle graduates such as Bill Ring, Chuck Storm, Dave “Lefty” Ervin, Bill Jacovini and the late George Paull.
communities. Jim has received similar appreciation from his high school alma mater, as he is a member of Roman Catholic’s Board of Trustees
Jim taught United States History at Archbishop Ryan for 20 years before moving exclusively to Health and Physical Education. He also served as Athletic Director and Assistant Athletic Director for the Archbishop Ryan High School for Boys in the 1970’s. Regardless of his role, Jim has been a constant at Archbishop Ryan and a visible and avid supporter of the school and their athletic programs. He was a 2010 recipient of the “Spirit of Ryan” award, which is given to individuals connected to Archbishop Ryan and

and is a two time recipient of their Loyalty Award, presented to him once at Commencement and the other by the Athletic Hall of Fame. Jim is an Archbishop Ryan original. He has a great personality with a big heart. He also has a love of life and our school that is hard to match. It is difficult to imagine the place without him. Jim currently lives in Roxborough with his wife Maggie. They have been happily married now for 42 years and both are still actively involved at Saint Bridget’s Church. God Bless Gator!
