Welcome to our world I’m so glad you’re here. The truth is, I spend an almost absurd amount of time testing hair products. When people tell me excitedly about a new product they’ve seen or read about they expect me to go “Wow!” or “Ooh and aah!” 4

But like Tinder dates they’re usually far from what’s promised. Realistically most new hair products are a rehash of the same old off-the-shelf siliconized formulas with all the newness going into the title, an invented backstory for marketing, and a new bottle design. In fact, some of the biggest companies have a formal process of alternate year - new development, with alternate year - what old formula can we just repackage with a new name and position it premium, so we can sell it at four times the price. A few new bells and whistles to fool people into thinking they’ve found the holy grail of hair care. But don’t be too upset, top hairdressers and beauty journalists fall for it too. So desperate is everyone for anything with the word NEW attached.

But not everything from nature is healthy for us, and geographical, sustainability, or harvest variations can cause problems. So whilst we lean very strongly towards nature first, we won’t let puritanical prejudice blind us from the best of science too. Here’s the science Most people have healthy hair at the root Hair is a complex structure of 97% proteins and 3% water. If the natural moisture level declines below its 3% norm, the hair becomes less flexible and more liable to damage. Once hair grows out of the scalp it is no longer part of the living tissue and so cannot repair itself. From here it starts to suffer the wear and tear of everyday living – UV light, aggressive heat styling, poor quality products, seawater, chlorine, hair colourants and other chemical processes.

These dehydrate and cause damage to the surface and interior. As the molecular bonds start to break down, the structure begins to leach away. The more protein bonds that are lost, the less able the hair is to hold moisture, and the more brittle it becomes. This accelerates the loss of protein molecules and so the degenerative cycle speeds up. The cuticle lifts away making the hair feel rough, dull and difficult to comb. Hair continues to thin and age rapidly.

Ten top anti-ageing tips for younger, sexier hair Healthier hair is often a lifestyle choice. If you are generally fit, a non-smoker, have a good balanced diet, etc. you are not going to get better hair than that coming out of your scalp. How quickly this hair dries out and disintegrates is very much down to you. When all put together, better habits across a range of hair care areas will make a massive difference in slowing the ageing process. You can have your hair dry out and split after 5” of growth, or 7”, 8”, 9”, 10”… it’s your choice, and you don’t have to live like a nun.

Many women think it is socially unacceptable to have long hair past 40. Like many social observations, this one is way out of date. It was always about condition, not length. In the old days before good conditioners, great colouring, skilful cutting and styling, etc. long, dry, frizzy white hair made a woman look old and tired. Today we have the skill and technology – 60 really is the new 40.

1. Throw away your dryer nozzle Your nozzle unnecessarily concentrates heat and can lead to excessive damage. Keep a one inch gap between your hair and the end of the dryer. 2. Always use conditioner Shampoos lift the surface cuticle to clean, conditioners reseal the cuticle for protection, shine, and comb-ability. 3. Use a professional saw-cut comb Moulded plastic combs can often have imperfections on the teeth that can lacerate the surface cuticle, ageing the hair prematurely. 3 ’’’More Inches professional combs are saw-cut from one piece then hand polished by artisans. 4. Trim ends regularly Every 3-8 weeks depending on length and style. As the ends decay and disintegrate they look tired and unattractive; also any splitting can travel up the hair shaft if not caught in time.

6. Use a No.1 Brush to take out knots on wet hair When hair is wet use a No.1 Brush or wide tooth comb to gently ease out knots from the ends first, working up to the roots. Don’t believe the myth of brushing hair 100 times before bedtime. Once it’s brushed, further friction just wears it out quicker. 7. Always protect your hair in the sun Staying indoors or wearing hats and scarves are best, but may not be as much fun. Next best is LifeSaver and LifeSaver UV. Colour your hair professionally Choose a colourist that cares about condition and quality, and is up to date. Modern tints are much gentler on the hair. 9. Choose a good stylist The right haircut well executed can save you 95% of the time you may be spending over styling and damaging your hair. 10. How to Shampoo without ruining your hair We are passionate about beautiful strong shiny hair and our entire 3’’’More Inches product range is created to deliver Healthcare for Hair® All our shampoos and conditioners are silicone-free and all hair types benefit from a protective, bodifying conditioner, even fine hair which is often fragile. Shampooing lifts the hairshaft cuticle during cleaning and the conditioner smoothes it down for comb-ability, protection and shine. Cashmere Protein Volumising Shampoo and Conditioner- for fine to medium or soft hair will help give body without weighing the hair down. Cashmere Protein Moisturising Shampoo and Conditioner for hair that is dry or coarse or mostly dry and washed daily. This will infuse the hair with moisture and flexibility and help protect from further damage. Cashmere Protein UV Protective Shampoo and Conditioner work across all hair types but particularly for coloured hair, as they have natural UV filters to protect from colour fade.

Cashmere Protein Scalp Exfoliating Shampoo works across all hair types to help clean flaky or itchy scalps. Many people think it’s bad to wash their hair everyday as this will dry it out. It is certainly not true if you are using high quality shampoos and conditioners and then gently drying the hair but if you have an aggressive styling routine (harsh products, excessive heat styling) then 7 cleansing and styling cycles a week will impact the condition of hair more than two cycles a week.

How to Shampoo – 3 Steps Following a good shampooing regime will leave your hair healthy, shiny and positively radiating with vitality. It will also be easier to style. Shampooing hair in the shower is often most effective as the hair is easier to rinse thoroughly. If you do shampoo in the bath without a hand held shower head then have a jug for fresh water for rinsing. 1. Combing or Brushing - Take out any knots starting from the ends first and then work your way up. Our Large Safety Comb or the No.1 Brush are best for this. 2. Shampooing - Ensure the hair is completely saturated before applying shampoo. Pour a teaspoon of shampoo and spread across palms. Apply the thin film across the hair and start to massage into lather across the scalp paying particular attention to the nape and hairline which will tend to be dirtier. Do not use nails to scratch the scalp. Bleached, tinted, curly or long hair is more likely to tangle, so handle with special care. Use fingers to comb the hair between movements and keep the hair in line. Do not rub ends together, nor use overly circular movements. Massage for at least 45 seconds. Then rinse thoroughly, and for 30 seconds more. If you are washing your hair daily one shampoo should be enough, but repeat if you feel the hair needs it.

3. Conditioning - When hair is thoroughly rinsed spread a teaspoon of conditioner across palms and apply to hair. Conditioner is for all the hair but more towards the mid lengths and ends. Do not massage it into the scalp. It is designed for hair not skin. Comb it through to ensure every strand is covered. Then rinse well, a little less if the hair is very dry. The hair will hang on to what it needs. Be aware that hair type is never a constant. It is sensitive to climatic changes, health and emotional disruption, and can become finer, coarser, oilier, drier, frizzier and smoother at different stages of our lives.
