Judy McKie Judy Kensley McKie is a prominent figure in the American studio furniture movement. McKie began making furniture in the early 1970s following her B.F.A. in Painting from the Rhode Island School of Design. Her designs are informed by formal training as an artist; she is essentially self-taught as a craftsperson. In her animal motifs, McKie refers to the design of indigenous cultures and primitive, totemic animals of Pre-Columbian, African, and Native American art, which are either carved into the wood or painted upon the surface. McKie strives to create sculptural and functional furniture; her decorative furniture, which is often cast in bronze, marble, resin, and stone, functions as both an art form and a useful piece of furniture.
heino studio: vivika + otto Vivika and Otto Heino worked in ceramics throughout the second half of the 20th century. As artists, they collaborated as a husband-and-wife team for thirty-five years, signing their pots “Vivika + Otto,” regardless of who made them. Clean lines and distinctive glazes mark their work; they focused on traditional and utilitarian pottery while avoiding ceramic trends. They were part of a generation that sought to redefine the relationship between ceramics and modern art. The Heinos were awarded the Silver Medal from the International Ceramics Exhibitions in Ostend, Belgium in 1959 and the Gold Medal at the Sixth Biennale Internationale de Céramique d’Art, in Vallauris, France in 1978. Examples of their work can be found in private collections and institutions, including the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, and the Smithsonian Institution. In this sale, the pottery being offered was part of Otto Heino’s final inventory, passed by the estate to the consignor.
