September 13–23, 2021 | skinnerinc.com

We are delighted to present two auctions in September—the most festive month of the year with plenty to harvest and celebrate. The more than 500 examples of pan-Asian objects are the fruitful result of countless visits to private collections and ensuing research. Many of the items come from collections enjoyed by families for generations, coming to the market with fascinating stories about their art-collecting ancestors. Our utmost privilege is to transmit such family heritage to our art-loving buyers, who will soon create their own collecting stories for their descendants. Indeed, art is long, and life is short, so we invite you to join us in person or online for our upcoming auctions.

This type of sundial began to be made in Korea during the 15th century. They were installed to function as public clocks for passersby in busy places such as shrines, bridges, and courtyards. However, only a handful are extant today, and this particular sundial is even rarer because it is not a typical quadripod but a tripod—no sundial with a three-legged base has been reported to exist. This sundial was previously in the collection of the Wuppertal Clock Museum until the present owner purchased it in the 2000s directly from the director of the museum.

This folding screen depicts a birthday scene for the Tang dynasty general Guo Xiyi (697-781). Guo was highly revered for his meritorious service in his lifetime and later deified as one of the Three Star Gods, Lu. His fame also reached Korea, where he was idolized as a symbolic figure of success, and his birthday banquet scene became a popular painting subject among the royals and upper class. However, such screens are rarely found these days—only eleven examples are known to exist in museums worldwide. This screen was purchased in Korea by William B. Van Nortwick (1911-1988) during his stay in 1951-52, it sold with his home to a private collector who kept it as displayed by Nortwick until now. Truly a rare treat for any collector in search of a masterpiece.

Their dynamic forms provided scholars of the past with inspiration for writing, poetry, and painting, and they continue to allow connoisseurs to experience a stunning microcosm of nature in their living space.
