The Hunt Equestrian painting has a rich and long tradition in British sporting art. The genre encompassed hunting and racing pictures, steeplechase and coaching pictures, and portraits of thoroughbreds, as perfected by generations of British artists over four centuries. These canvases filled country houses across England. Coined “The Sport of Kings,” horse racing had its start in England under James I, who was both an advocate and a rider. Charles I was the first racehorse breeder. His son Charles II, a breeder, trainer, and owner, has been called “the father of British turf.” The earliest English racing scene, painted by Francis Barlow in 1687, shows Charles II at a race meeting in Dorsett Ferry. While George Stubbs stands as the leading British animal painter of the 18th century, the field flourished among many artists. During this era John Wootton developed the genre of racehorse portraiture, becoming one of the highest paid artists in England. In addition to the careful portrayal of the equine subject, precise attention was paid to the details of saddlery and clothing, such that their technical improvements can be used to date the works of art. Equestrian paintings from several generations of the Sartorius family span the 18th century, and the close of the century witnessed the rise of other sporting art dynasties, with the birth of patriarchs Henry Alken Senior (b. 1756) and John Frederick Herring Senior (b. 1795). In late 18th century Britain, fox hunting gained popularity that reached its apogee in the first thirty years of the 19th century. The genre was seasoned with humor in the hunting caricatures of artists such as James Leech, but the sporting tradition was carried proudly into the modern era by internationally respected artists such as Sir Alfred James Munnings, who in turn inspired a new generation of sporting artists working today.
