433 Attributed to James Jacques Joseph Tissot (French, 1836-1902) Coldstream Drummer Boys, c. 1872 Unsigned, inscribed “J. Tissot” on the stretcher. Oil on canvas, 15 x 20 in. (38.1 x 51.0 cm), framed. Condition: Stable craquelure, minor paint losses at corners and at u.r. edge, stretcher bar marks, surface grime. Provenance: Purchased by the current owner from an estate in Surrey, England, in the early 1980s. N.B. The lot is accompanied by a typed note on letterhead from William Thuillier, Specialist in Old Master Paintings from Private Collections, London, that provides background on Tissot’s painting of the Coldstream Drummer Boys.

There is little scholarly information on James Tissot after he left London and returned to Paris in 1882. Except for the 1885-6 series of the Women of Paris, he was thought to have focused on religious works. However, in L’Artiste, 1889, reviewer F. Courboin wrote, “M. Tissot a envoyé des aquarelles très serrées et deux jolies études d’après le Fifres de Coldstream Guards.”1 This brief reference indicates that The Coldstream Guards had indeed been a subject for Tissot at some point, and he was exhibiting them in Paris in the late 1880s. It is not clear, however, if the works were done at that period or painted earlier when the artist lived in England. 1. F. Courboin, “Les Expositions: Le Peintres-Graveurs,” L’Artiste, 1889, Vol. I, p. 127.

N.B. The present work may depict charcoal burning based on the scale of the operation, its proximity to the forest source, and the absence of any limestone. The ancient process of charcoal burning grew on a large scale during the Industrial Revolution to accomodate the demand for iron and steel smelting, which were essential to the laying of transcontinental lines and other modern construction. Condition: Deckled edges, foxing, mat burn, paper tape hinged to backing mat. Provenance: Estate of Hester Marion (née Chanler) Pickman (1893-1989), Bedford, Massachusetts; by family descent to the present owner. Literature: The Picasso Project, Picasso’s Paintings, Watercolors, Drawings and Sculpture: A Comprehensive Illustrated Catalogue 1885-1973, Neoclassicism II 19221924 (San Francisco: Alan Wofsy Fine Arts, 1996), no. 23-204, p. 173 (illus.); Christian Zervos, Pablo Picasso, Vol. V (Paris: Èditions Cahiers d’Art, 1942-1951), no. 134, p. 66 (illus.). N.B. A photo-certificate issued by Claude Ruiz-Picasso of the Picasso Administration accompanies the lot. We wish to thank Mr. Picasso and Christine Pinault for their kind assistance. Hester M. Chanler was a descendent of the Astor family by her paternal grandmother Margaret “Maddie” Astor Ward (1838-1875) and her grandfather New York congressman John Winthrop Chanler (1826-1877). While she was born into a family of social prominence and wealth, it was also one of artistic achievement—her mother Margaret (née Terry) Chanler, uncle Francis Marion Crawford, and aunt Mary Crawford Fraser all published works of fiction and non-fiction; her maternal great-aunt Julia Ward Howe wrote the song “Battle Hymn of the Republic,” and her maternal grandfather Luther Terry painted allegorical, portrait, and genre scenes. In 1915, Hester, who attended Radcliffe College and was fluent in several languages, married the scholar Edward Motley Pickman (1886-1959), a Harvard graduate and descendant of the Pickman merchant family of Salem.

As a result of their intensive practice and on Goncharova’s praise, Sergei Diaghilev gave the three artists an opportunity to paint backdrops for the Ballet Russes’ spring 1922 season.3 Pablo Picasso, who had collaborated with Diaghilev earlier in the year for the May performance of Cuadro flamenco and was married to Ballet Russes principal Olga Khokhlova, was amongst the artists who came in to supervise their work and offer corrections.4 By January 1922, the Murphys (and presumably the Pickmans) were socializing with Picasso over cocktails around Paris.5 During the summer of 1922, the Pickmans and Murphys vacationed together in Houlgate, a seaside resort in Calvados, Normandy.6 In a letter from Hester M. Pickman to her sister Laura Chanler White (the daughter-in-law of architect Stanford White), Hester describes their residence, Villa Germaine, as ideally situated between a town, the beach, the countryside, and “4 or 5 nice friends, i.e. the Murphies [sic]...”7 In 1923, the Picassos and Murphys summered in Cap d’Antibes on the Côte d’Azur, frequently socializing at La Garoupe beach. Picasso continued to work in a linear, neoclassical style, creating a number of drawings depicting the Three Graces and idealized female nudes. Sara Murphy, with her well-defined features and easygoing manner, served as a model and muse to Picasso during their stay in July.8 While the sitter of the present work is unidentified, her profile bears a strong resemblance to Sara Murphy as depicted in the ink drawing Femme au Turban, created the same year. And while it not yet known how and when this recently rediscovered work was acquired by the Pickmans, one can surmise that the drawing may have been a souvenir of their time in France with the Murphys and Picasso. 1. Between the autumns of 1921 and 1923, the Pickmans (with their four children) went on a “modernized” Grand Tour of France, Germany, and Italy, and are believed to have acquired the drawing during this period.1 The Pickmans were close friends of Sara and Gerald Murphy, who were also in France at this time, and joined them on some adventures. During the autumn of 1921 in Paris, Hester and the Murphys studied painting for six months under Natalia Goncharova, where they were critiqued daily by Goncharova and her partner Michel Larionov.2

627 Beauford Delaney (African American, 19011979) Abstraction Signed and dated “Beauford Delaney 1969” l.r., identified on a label from Galerie Darthea Speyer, Paris, affixed to the backing. Gouache on paper, sight size 25 3/4 x 19 1/2 in. (65.4 x 49.5 cm), framed. Condition: Not examined out of frame.

N.B. While Beauford Delaney is known today as a Harlem Renaissance artist and African American expatriate, he began his artistic training in Boston. Between 1923 and 1929, he attended the Massachusetts Normal Art School (now Massachusetts College of Art and Design), Copley Society, and the South Boston School of Art.1 From 1929 to 1953, Delaney worked in New York where he met the beacons of the Harlem Renaissance movement such as W.E. B. DuBois, Louis Armstrong, and James Baldwin. Amidst the growing racial tensions and McCarthyism of the early 1950s, Paris began to look attractive to Delaney, and in 1953, he moved to Montparnasse where he settled permanently.

The present work was created a year after Darthea Speyer opened her gallery on rue Jacques Callot in Paris. As a cultural attaché for the United States Information Services, she organized a show of American artists at the Musee National D’Art Moderne in 1953, which laid the groundwork for the acceptance of American Post War art and expatriate artists in Paris.2 1. 638 Tomasz Tatarczyk (Polish, b. 1947) Czarna Brama [Black Gate] (Diptych) Signed, dated, and titled “TOMASZ TATARCZYK 1984...” on the reverse. Oil on canvas, 94 x 67 in. (238.8 x 170.2 cm), unframed. Condition: Good.

N.B. Lots 638 to 641 date to Tatarcyzk’s early period. He created his Gates series between 1984-1985, which was inspired both by the countryside landscape around Miecmierzu on the Vistula River as well as Caspar David Friedrich’s The Cemetary Gate (1825-30).1 In all four works, Tatarczyk abstracts an A-frame form to reference secular and sacred structures and evoke a feeling of the commonplace and exalted. Tatarczyk attended the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw, studying under Jan Tarasin (Polish, 1926-2009).2 He has participated in a number of one-man and group shows at the venerable Galeria Foksal in Warsaw, as well as the Moderna Museet in Stockholm and Muzeum Narodowe in Warsaw. He is the recipient of numerous grants and residencies, including most recently the Rockefeller Foundation Scholarship in Bellagio, Italy.3

Tarasewicz attended the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw, studying under Tadeusz Dominik (Polish, b. 1928), receiving his MFA in 1984. Conditions of Sale 1. Some of the lots in this sale are offered subject to a reserve. The reserve is a confidential minimum price agreed upon by the consignor and Skinner, Inc. below which the lot will not be sold. In most cases, the reserve will be set below the estimated range, but in no case will it exceed the estimates listed. A representative of Skinner, Inc. will execute such reserves by bidding for the consignor. In any event and whether or not a lot is subject to a reserve, the auctioneer may reject any bid or raise not commensurate with the value of such lot. 2. All property is sold “as is, and neither the auctioneer nor any consignor makes any warranties or representation of any kind or nature with respect to the property, and in no event shall they be responsible for the correctness, nor deemed to have made any representation or warranty, of description, genuineness, authorship, attribution, provenance, period, culture, source, origin, or condition of the property and no statement made at the sale, or in the bill of sale, or invoice or elsewhere shall be deemed such a warranty of representation or an assumption of liability. 3. Except as provided in paragraph 1 above, the highest bidder as determined by the auctioneer shall be the purchaser. In the case of a disputed bid, the auctioneer shall have sole discretion in determining the purchaser and may also, at his or her election, withdraw the lot or reoffer the lot for sale. The auctioneer shall have sole discretion to refuse any bid, or refuse to acknowledge any bidder. Any bidder that plans on spending in excess of $100,000 should make arrangements with the accounting department at least five (5) days in advance of the sale, as a deposit may be required to participate. 4. All merchandise purchased must be paid for and removed from the premises the day of the auction. Skinner Inc. may impose, and the purchaser agrees to pay, a monthly interest charge of 1.5% of the purchase price of any lot or item lot not paid for within thirty-five (35) days of the date of sale. Skinner, Inc. shall have no liability for any damage or loss to property left on its premises for more than three (3) days from the date of sale. If any property has not been removed within three (3) days from the date of sale, at the option of Skinner, Inc. (a) Skinner Inc., may impose, and the purchaser agrees to pay, a monthly storage charge of 1.5% of the purchase price of any lot or portion of a lot not removed within the three days, and/or (b) Skinner Inc. may place the merchandise in a subsequent auction, without Reserve, to be sold to the highest bidder, and after deducting the standard commission and any additional charges that may apply, remit the proceeds to the purchaser. 5. Skinner accepts cash or check for payment. Personal checks will be acceptable only if credit has been established with Skinner, Inc. or if a bank authorization has been received guaranteeing a personal check. Skinner, Inc. reserves the right to hold merchandise purchased by personal check until the check has cleared the bank. The purchaser agrees to pay Skinner, Inc. a handling charge of $25.00 for any check dishonored by the drawee. Please contact Accounting for additional payment methods. Skinner does not accept payment by credit card for merchandise purchases. 6. If the purchaser breaches any of its obligations under these Conditions of Sale, including its obligation to pay in full the purchase price of all items for which it was the highest successful bidder, Skinner Inc. may exercise all of its rights and remedies under the law including, without limitation, (a) canceling the sale and applying any payments made by the purchaser to the damages caused by the purchaser’s breach, and/or (b) offering at public auction, without reserve, any lot or item for which the purchaser has breached any of its obligations, including its obligation to pay in full the purchase price, holding the purchaser liable for any deficiency plus all costs of sale. 7. In no event will the liability of Skinner, Inc. to any purchaser with respect to any item exceed the purchase price actually paid by such purchaser for such item. 8. Shipping is the responsibility of the purchaser. Upon request, our staff will provide the list of shippers who deliver to destinations within the United States and overseas. Some property that is sold at auction can be subject to laws governing export from the U.S., such as items that include material from some endangered species. Import restrictions from foreign countries are subject to these same governing laws. Granting of licensing for import or export of goods from local authorities is the sole responsibility of the buyer. Denial or delay of licensing will not constitute cancellation or delay in payment for the total purchase price of these lots. 9. All purchases are subject to the Massachusetts 6.25% sales tax unless the purchaser possesses a Massachusetts sales tax exemption number. Exemption numbers from other states are accepted in Massachusetts if presented with a business card or letterhead. Dealers, museums, and other qualifying parties can apply for a Massachusetts exemption number prior to the auction by contacting the Massachusetts Department of Corporations and Taxation at 100 Cambridge Street in Boston. 10. A premium equal to 23% of the final bid price up to and including $100,000, plus 20% of the final bid price from $100,001 up to and including $1,000,000, plus 12% of the final bid price from $1,000,001 and over will be applied to each lot sold, to be paid by the buyer as part of the purchase price. 11. Bidding on any item indicates your acceptance of these terms and all other terms printed within, posted, and announced at the time of sale whether bidding in person, through a representative, by phone, by Internet, or other absentee bid. 12. Skinner, Inc. and its consignors make no warranty or representation, express or implied, that the purchaser will acquire any copyright or reproduction rights to any lot sold. Skinner, Inc. expressly reserves the right to reproduce any image of the lots sold in this catalog. The copyright in all images, illustrations and written material produced by or for Skinner, Inc. relating to a lot, including the contents of this catalog, is, and shall remain at all times, the property of Skinner, Inc. and shall not be used by the purchaser, nor by anyone else, without our prior written consent. 13. These conditions of sale shall be governed by the laws of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts (excluding the laws applicable to conflicts or choice of law). The buyer/bidder agrees that any suit for the enforcement of this agreement may be brought, and any action against Skinner in connection with the transactions contemplated by this agreement shall be brought, in the courts of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts or any federal court sitting therein. The bidder/buyer consents to the exclusive jurisdiction of such courts and waives objections that it may now or hereafter have to the venue of any such suit.
