The auction begins with a wonderful collection that spans the globe, from Champagne to Bordeaux to Burgundy, Rhone, Cult California and more. Wines were purchased either from mailing lists or from reputable retailers by the consignor and removed from custombuilt, temperature-controlled home storage by Skinner specialists. 1 Krug Vintage Brut 1996 Reims “The 1996 Krug Vintage remains one of the greatest Champagnes ever made. It is also far less expensive than either the Clos du Mesnil or Clos d’Ambonnay but equally as delicious. This bottle is stratospheric, with layers of explosive fruit that flow effortlessly to the multi-dimensional, captivating finish. It is another eternal Champagne from Krug.” A. Galloni for TWA, 98 pts. 07/11 1 bottle $275-350

7 Chateau Margaux 2003 Margaux, 1er Cru Classe “Am I being too stingy with the 2003 Chateau Margaux? A wine of extraordinary complexity and intensity, it reveals a deep purple color, a style not unlike the 1990 Margaux (possibly even more concentrated), a velvety texture, and notes of spring flowers interwoven with camphor, melted licorice, creme de cassis, and pain grille. Not a blockbuster, it offers extraordinary intensity as well as a surreal delicacy/lightness. There is riveting freshness to this offering, which tips the scales at a lofty (for this estate) 13.5% alcohol, as well as an alluring sweetness and accessibility. It probably will tighten up over the next few years. Nevertheless, it is a profound Chateau Margaux that brings to mind a hypothetical blend of the 1982 and 1990. Anticipated maturity: 20112035.” R. Parker, 99 pts. 04/06 1 bottle $450-650 8 Chateau Mouton Rothschild 2001 Pauillac, 1er Cru Classe 1 bottle $300-400 9 Chateau Mouton Rothschild 2002 Pauillac, 1er Cru Classe 1 bottle $300-400 10 Chateau Cos d’Estournel 2005 St. Estephe, 2eme Cru Classe “While I am not convinced the 2005 Cos d’Estournel will eclipse the compelling 2003 Cos, it is unquestionably another superb classic from proprietor Michel Reybier and his brilliant winemaker, Jean-Guillaume Prats. Made from an unusually high percentage of Cabernet Sauvignon (78%) and the balance mostly Merlot with a tiny dollop of Cabernet Franc, this superb effort requires plenty of time in the bottle. It boasts an inky/ purple color as well as a glorious perfume of licorice, Asian spices, creme de cassis, blackberries, and toasty oak. This full-bodied St.-Estephe is exceptionally powerful, pure, and dense with a layered mid-palate that builds like a skyscraper. While there are massive tannins, they are remarkably velvety and well-integrated in this big, backstrapping effort that should enjoy an unusually long life. Forget it for 8-10 years, and drink it between 20172040.” R. Parker, 98 pts. 04/08 1 imperial (owc) $1,000-1,500

I had the 1990 at the Jaboulet tasting, and again out of a double magnum three months ago. On both occasions it was spectacular, clearly meriting a three-digit score. The modern day equivalent of the 1961, it deserves all the attention it has garnered. The color remains an opaque purple, with only a slight pink at the edge. Spectacular aromatics offer up aromas of incense, smoke, blackberry fruit, cassis, barbecue spice, coffee, and a touch of chocolate. As it sits in the glass, additional nuances of pepper and grilled steak emerge. There is extraordinary freshness for such a mammoth wine in addition to abundant tannin, an amazing 60-second finish, and a level of glycerin and thick, fleshy texture that have to be tasted to be believed. Despite its youthfulness, the 1990 La Chapelle is lovely to drink, although it will be even better with another 5-6 years of cellaring; it should age for 3540+ years. Anticipated maturity: 20052050.” R. Parker, 100 pts. 06/00 1 magnum $900-1,400

40 Chateau Montelena Cabernet Sauvignon The Montelena Estate 1997 Napa “There are 10,200 cases of the remarkable 1997 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate. Opaque purple-colored with a dense, chewy, full-bodied personality, it displays abundant cassis, mineral, and earth notes. This brilliantly made, super-concentrated, pure, blockbuster possesses sweet tannin as well as a terrific finish. Having added additional weight since last year, this sumptuous, multilayered, profoundly concentrated Cabernet contains 14% alcohol. It is a candidate for 25-30 years of longevity. 66 Schrader Cellars Cabernet Sauvignon RBS Beckstoffer ToKalon Vineyard 2010 Napa “Flirting with perfection, the 2010 Cabernet Sauvignon Beckstoffer To Kalon Vineyard RBS from clone 337 was aged in new Darnajou barrels (80%) and the rest in new Taransaud barrels. There were 410 cases produced, which is several hundred cases less than the production in 2012. An unbelievable red wine, it boasts an inky/purple color as well as abundant notes of charcoal, white chocolate, toast, new saddle leather, blueberries, blackberries, creme de cassis and licorice. As the wine sits in the glass, some chocolaty, smoky elements also emerge. This virtually perfect Cabernet Sauvignon has been flawlessly made and should age effortlessly for 25-30+ years.” R. 70 Spottswoode Cabernet Sauvignon Estate 2007 Napa “Retasting the 2007 Cabernet Sauvignon was a treat as I believe it is the greatest Cabernet Sauvignon Spottswoode has ever produced. Wonderful aromas of black raspberries, blueberries, black currants and flowers jump from the glass of this dark ruby/ purple-tinged Cabernet. As I have stated before, if Chateau Margaux were in Napa Valley, it would be Spottswoode. The purity, balance and delicacy of this wine are impressive. Perhaps slightly less dense and powerful than the 2008, the 2007 is flawlessly put together with nothing out of place. It, too, should age effortlessly for 20-30+ years.” R. 80 Chateau Cos d’Estournel 2009 St. Estephe, 2eme Cru Classe “One of the greatest young wines I have ever tasted, the monumental 2009 Cos d’Estournel has lived up to its pre-bottling potential. A remarkable effort from winemaking guru JeanGuillaume Prats and owner Michel Reybier, this blend of 65% Cabernet Sauvignon and the rest Merlot (33%) and a touch of Cabernet Franc (2%) was cropped at 33 hectoliters per hectare. It boasts an inky/black/purple color along with an extraordinary bouquet of white flowers interwoven with blackberry and blueberry liqueur, incense, charcoal and graphite. The wine hits the palate with extraordinary purity, balance and intensity as well as perfect equilibrium, and a seamless integration of tannin, acidity, wood and alcohol. An iconic wine as well as a remarkable achievement, it is the greatest Cos d’Estournel ever produced. It is approachable enough at present that one could appreciate it with several hours of decanting, but it will not hit its prime for a decade, and should age effortlessly for a half century.” R. 82 Chateau Montrose 2010 St. Estephe, 2eme Cru Classe “The 2010 Montrose is a fabulous wine, and I was leaning toward giving it a three-digit score, which it may ultimately merit after it resolves some of its very sweet tannin. It is not as soft or flamboyant as the 2009, but it is a great classic, coming in at 13.9% natural alcohol. Representing 64% of the total production, the final blend is 53% Cabernet Sauvignon, 37% Merlot, 9% Cabernet Franc and 1% Petit Verdot (which is one percent different than the barrel sample blends that were presented). Inky bluish/ purple in color, with classic blueberry, black currant, crushed rock and floral notes, hints of graphite, and lots of wild mountain berry fruit, this wine is extravagantly rich, has very sweet but noticeable tannin, laser-like precision, a massive, full-bodied mouthfeel and a finish of close to 50+ seconds. This remarkable wine will probably tighten up somewhat in the bottle, and need most of a decade to shed some tannin and its rather grapy, primary personality. The finish blew me away, and the overall power, richness and balance of this wine are virtually perfect. Look for it to drink well for half a century or more.” R Parker, 99 pts. 02/13 12 bottles (owc) $1,800-2,400 83 Chateau Malescot St. Exupery 2009 Margaux, 3eme Cru Classe R. 87 Chateau Pontet Canet 2010 Pauillac, 5eme Cru Classe “An absolutely amazing wine, from grapes harvested between the end of September and October 17, this blend of 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot and the rest Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot has close to 15% natural alcohol. It comes from one of the few biodynamic vineyards in Bordeaux, but you are likely to see many more, given the success that Tesseron seems to be having at all levels, both in his vineyards and in his fermentation/winemaking. An astounding, compelling wine with the classic Pauillac nose more often associated with its cross-street neighbor, Mouton-Rothschild, creme de cassis, there are also some violets and other assorted floral notes. The wine has off-the-charts massiveness and intensity but never comes across as heavy, overbearing or astringent. The freshness, laser-like precision, and full-bodied, massive richness and extract are simply remarkable to behold and experience. It is very easy, to become jaded tasting such great wines from a great vintage, but it is really a privilege to taste something as amazing as this. Unfortunately, it needs a good decade of cellaring, and that’s assuming it doesn’t close down over the next few years. This is a 50- to 75year wine from one of the half-dozen or so most compulsive and obsessive proprietors in all of Bordeaux. Is there anything that proprietor Alfred Tesseron is not doing right? Talk about an estate that is on top of its game! PontetCanet’s 2010 is a more structured, tannic and restrained version of their most recent perfect wine, the 2009. Kudos to Pontet-Canet!” R. Parker, 100 pts. 02/13 12 bottles (owc) $1,800-2,400
103 Vieux Chateau Certan 2009 Pomerol “The 2009’s nearly 14% natural alcohol, exquisite ripeness, and incredible complex bouquet of Asian spices, fruitcake, licorice, smoke, blackberries and black currants are to die for. A blend of 84% Merlot and the rest equal parts Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon, it possesses a viscous texture as well as a freshness and vibrancy that are remarkable given the wine’s weight, richness and potential massiveness. This extraordinary effort is one of the finest Vieux Chateau Certans made over the last sixty years. It will undoubtedly shut down in bottle, requiring a decade or more of cellaring. It should keep for 50 years thereafter. Proprietor Thienpont thinks it is a modern day version of the 1948.” R. Seamless and elegant, with the house richness and texture, it gives up thrilling, floral-tinged aromas and flavors of red berry fruit, flower oil, spice, white pepper and licorice to go with a full-bodied, layered mouthfeel that keeps you coming back to the glass. While approachable now, it will have upwards of two decades of longevity. Drink 2015-2030.” J. A blend of 85% Syrah, 5% Grenache, 3% Petite Sirah, 5% Roussanne and 2% Viognier that was fermented with 20% whole cluster and aged 22 months in 59% new French oak, it opens up beautifully in the glass and should be decanted if drinking anytime soon. Dark fruit, spices, licorice and violets sit on a core of firm tannin as this powerful wine opens up in the glass. Today, The Thrill Of… comes across as very, very young. The intensity of the fruit and the oak are dominant at present. In another few years the wine should be spectacular. The Thrill Of... is 90% Syrah, 6% Grenache and 4% Viognier, all destemmed and mostly from estate owned vineyards. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2024.” A. There is an inner sweetness and sheer depth that make the 2009 compelling. The 11% Syrah and 5% Mourvedre make themselves heard clearly in adding layers of depth and pure richness. A staggering collection spanning the globe, including Classified Bordeaux, a cache of Right Bank gems such as mature Petrus and Cheval Blanc, Burgundy and Rhone selections, California, Washington State, Australian standouts including Grange in spades and rare magnums of Torbreck. I have never seen so much Masseto in one place, plus the critical mass of Solaia, Sassicaia, Ornellaia and large format Brunello and Gaja… truly an incredible collection.

Of course, one can’t drink the glass, but this is a top-flight Mouton Rothschild, eclipsed only by the 2006 and 2009. A rich, tannic, earthy style, with loads of creme de cassis and floral notes, the final blend of 86% Cabernet Sauvignon and 14% Merlot is a full-bodied wine with plenty of coffee, earth, chocolatey notes, and still plenty of tannin to resolve. I gave it an anticipated maturity range of 20152050 back in 2003, and that looks on target.” R. 307 Leroy Nuits St. Georges 2004 Cote de Nuits signs of old seepage “Surprisingly, given the vineyards blended into the respective cuvées, this is actually more elegant than the Bourgogne with a floral and wonderfully spicy aromatic profile and delicious, sweet, textured and intense medium full flavors that are powerful, muscular and powerful, all wrapped in a strikingly long finish. This is a ‘wow’ wine.” Burghound, 93 pts. 04/06 12 bottles (owc) $2,000-3,000 308 Leroy Richebourg 2000 Cote de Nuits signs of overfill seepage, lightly stained vintage tag Burghound, (91-94) pts. 01/02 2 bottles $1,400-2,000 309 Meo Camuzet Rouge du Bas Echezeaux 1999 Cote de Nuits 1 bottle $200-300 310 Meo Camuzet Vosne Romanee 2000 Cote de Nuits 9 bottles $600-900 311 Meo Camuzet Vosne Romanee Les Chaumes 2001 Cote de Nuits Burghound, 92 pts. 07/08 2 bottles $200-300

306 Leroy Chambolle Musigny 2004 Cote de Nuits signs of old seepage “This is equally stylish and classy though completely different with a stunningly complex and ultra floral nose combining spice, earth and dark pinot fruit aromas that continue onto the detailed, powerful and fantastically long flavors that stain the palate with almost painful intensity and sap. This may very well equal the Vosne one day as the qualitative difference between the two is subtle indeed.” Burghound, 94 pts. 04/06 12 bottles (owc) $3,500-5,000
323 Guigal La Landonne 1998 Northern Rhone “The 1998 Cote Rotie La Landonne is a perfect wine...at least for my palate. Its saturated black/purple color is accompanied by an extraordinary nose of smoke, incense, tapenade, creosote, blackberry, and currant aromas. It is densely packed with blackberry, truffle, chocolate, and leather-like flavors. The wine possesses high tannin, but perfect harmony, impeccable balance, and gorgeous integration of acidity, alcohol, and tannin. It is a tour de force in winemaking. Anticipated maturity: 2007-2025.” R. Parker, 100 pts. 04/02 1 bottle $300-450 324 Guigal La Turque 1986 Northern Rhone u: 1.5cm 1 bottle $150-225

325 Guigal La Turque 1999 Northern Rhone “The 1999 Cote Rotie La Turque reveals notes of toasty vanilla and espresso in addition to Asian spices, mocha, pepper, blackberries, creosote, and roasted meats. The exotic perfume is followed by a wine with phenomenal intensity, sweet, well-integrated tannin, huge body, and loads of concentrated fruit. It is a tour de force in winemaking. Anticipated maturity: 2006-2025 What is so remarkable about this cuvee is its tremendous layers of flavor, awesome texture, and perfect balance. This is an astonishing offering from one of the world’s greatest winemakers.” R. Parker, 100 pts. 06/03 1 bottles $400-600 326 Jaboulet Hermitage La Chapelle 1995 Northern Rhone 2 bottles $150-250

It boasts an exceptionally provocative nose of liquid minerals, graphite, plums, creme de cassis, and cherry liqueur. It is fabulously concentrated yet remarkably light on its feet, with medium to full body, sweet tannin, and layer upon layer of flavor nuances. An exquisite, celestial bouquet melds into endless layers of fruit as this rich, voluptuous wine blossoms on the palate. Fullbodied and seductive, the 2007 conquers all of the senses with its head spinning, beautiful personality. As always, Screaming Eagle is a bit more restrained next to Napa Valley’s other heavy hitters, yet the pedigree of this opulent vintage comes through in spades. A kaleidoscope of aromas and flavors flows through to the creamy, textured finish. I have tasted the 2007 several times recently. It has always been perfect. My only issue with the 2007 is that it appears to be shutting down just a touch. Anticipated maturity: 2015-2027.” A. The 14.9% alcohol is barely noticeable given the amazing concentration and intensity. A saturated opaque purple color is followed by scents of vanilla, blackberry liqueur, crushed minerals, and a hint of white flowers. There is stunning intensity, tremendous purity, full body, and a remarkable, seamless finish (amazing given the elevated, austere tannin). Give the 1999 another 2-3 years of cellaring, and enjoy it over the following two decades or longer. A brilliant effort!” R. Parker, 97 pts. 12/03 6 bottles (owc) $900-1,350

510 Shafer Vineyards Hillside Select 2004 Napa “The Cabernet Sauvignon Hillside Select has been one of Napa’s true first-growths since the early 1990s. The 2004 exhibits a dense opaque purple color along with spectacular, almost surreal levels of fruit that are never heavy, overripe or flawed. Its beautiful notes of creme de cassis, licorice and subtle oak (this cuvee spends 32 months in 100% new French barrels), skyscraper-like texture and extraordinarily long finish are all superb. This is a great wine from a great family who has done everything necessary to produce a world-class wine that can compete with any wine made from the Cabernet Sauvignon grape. You can’t say enough positives about the Shafers. Drink this 2004 Hillside Select over the next 20-25 years, although it could be even more stupendous in 4050 years.” R. A dense, resonant wine, the 2009 stands out for its extraordinarily vivid fruit and equally compelling personality. This is pure Howell Mountain at its very best. With time in the glass the 2009 opens up beautifully. There is more than enough fruit to fill out the wine’s huge, broadshouldered frame.” A. Galloni for TWA, 98+ pts. 12/12 2 bottles $700-1,000

It seems to me that his 1983 has the potential to be super, but it still remains charmless and austere. Deep dark ruby in color with some amber at the edge, it has a profound concentration of ripe, smoky, berry fruit and Asian spices, full body, exceptional depth and length, as well as a formidable tannin level. Anticipated maturity: 2003-2025.” R. Parker, 93 pts. 01/97 4 bottles $800-1,200

This is a classy thoroughbred of a wine with superb complexity, impeccable balance and huge length, all delivered with both grace and power. Be prepared to be patient however as this will need time.” Burghound, (92-95) pts. 01/07 3 bottles $900-1,200

The flavors are quite powerful, firm and crystalline, underscored by pronounced and ripe acidity buffered by a lovely touch of sweet and sappy extract. Simply beautiful juice that arguably possesses the best balance of any wine here.” Burghound, 93 pts. 07/05 2 bottles $450-650 729 Louis Latour Chambertin 1943 Cote de Nuits u: 5.0cm, slight signs of old seepage, bin-soiled label, good color and clarity 1 bottle $200-300 730 Philippe Leclerc Gevrey Chambertin Cazetiers 1983 (3 bts) u: 2.0cm 1988 (3 bts) u: two 2.0cm, one 3.0cm, one nicked capsule, two with signs of old seepage, irregularly shaped bottles Cote de Nuits 6 bottles $275-400 731 Philippe Leclerc Gevrey Chambertin la Combe aux Moines 1987 (3 bts) u: two 2.5cm, one 4.5cm, one nicked label, irregularly shaped bottles 1988 (7 bts) u: one 1.0cm, two 2.5cm, three 3.0cm, one 3.5cm, nicked labels, irregularly shaped bottles Cote de Nuits 10 bottles $300-450 732 Leflaive Batard Montrachet 1996 Cote de Beaune 1 bottle $300-450

When first opened, there were slight hints of oxidation yet with air, they blew off to reveal ripe, exotic and fully mature aromas that display completely secondary characteristics (but no sous bois) and lead to rich, full and vibrant full-bodied flavors blessed with buckets of dry extract that are rich to the point of opulence yet the acidity is more than sufficient to maintain excellent balance. For my taste, this has reached its plateau and I see no reason to hold it further; that said, there is no reason to rush to drink up either. In short, a stellar vintage even by the incredibly high standards of this wine. Tasted three times with relatively consistent notes save for one slightly oxidized bottle that may have suffered by less than perfect storage.” Burghound, 96 pts. 04/08 1 bottle $4,000-5,000 737 G. Marvelously dense and ethereal, this classy, breathtaking Taurasi offers up a mélange of plums, prunes, licorice, herbs, spices and minerals, showing incredible detail and tons of inner perfume. Amazingly, the 1968 comes across is incredibly youthful and vigorous. Today, it looks to be developing along the lines of the 1958, another fabulous vintage here. The finish retains very attractive elements of classicism and sheer tannic clout. The 1968 Riserva can be enjoyed today, but ideally it is best opened several hours prior to being served. In 1968 the Riserva was made from a blend of vineyards in Montemarano, Pian d’Angelo and Castelfranci, three of the most renowned spots for Aglianico. Anticipated maturity: 2010-2030.” A. 733 Ponsot Chapelle Chambertin 2009 Cote de Nuits “Somewhat surprisingly, here the nose is even more elegant than that of the Griotte with its cool, airy and pure red cherry-liqueur, spice and essence of liquid minerality suffused nose that leads to dense, intense and equally mineral-driven big-bodied but refined flavors, all wrapped in a beautifully detailed, explosively long and youthfully austere finish. This is a serious and quite restrained effort that will require the better part of two decades to reach its full apogee.” Burghound, (93-95) pts. 01/11 3 bottles $500-750

A monumental California Cabernet Sauvignon, it appears to have approached its plateau of maturity but should easily last for 20-25 more years. There is no rust, amber, or brown to the saturated dark purple color. The spectacular, huge, Mouton-Rothschild-like nose of mint, cassis, lead pencil, and toast is remarkably youthful. Staggeringly concentrated, this full-bodied, superrich wine possesses moderate tannin, fresh, lively acidity, and a blockbuster, rich, fleshy finish. This is a monumental effort!” R. For Bordeaux, Port, and other shouldered bottles n. bn. vts. ts. hs. ms. lms. s.
Fine Wines – Online
Ullage (Level of Wine) Illustration and Interpretations
ullage is into neck bottom neck very top shoulder top shoulder; usual level for Bordeaux older than 15 yrs high shoulder; usual cork reduction, often found in Bordeaux over 20 yrs, low risk mid shoulder; variation likely as indicates cork deterioration low mid shoulder; some risks, reflected in estimates shoulder; risky, reflected in estimates into neck bottom neck very top shoulder top shoulder high shoulder mid shoulder low mid shoulder shoulder
Ullage of wines of vintages fifteen years and younger may be assumed to be of bottom neck or better unless otherwise noted. Similarly, regarding older vintages, lack of notation indicates acceptable and appropriate ullage, clear label and sound cork; potential bidders must be prepared for reasonable variations in ullage in all vintages older than 20 years. Bidders with specific condition questions should contact the Fine Wines department. Conditions generally not noted on group lots. Bordeaux wines are catalogued referencing the 1855 classification. Chateau Petrus cataloguing reflects the practice of granting it 1er Cru Classe and other notable Pomerol Chateaux are designated Cru Classe. All Bordeaux wines may assume to be chateau bottled unless otherwise stated. It is standard practice for Skinner/Lower Falls Wine to open all original wooden cases (owc) for visual inspection. The opening of banded cases will be determined on an individual basis. For Burgundy, German wines and all other more gradually slope-shouldered bottles, the ullage measurement is taken in centimeters from cork base, e.g. 3cm, 5cm, 7cm. Bottle Sizes bottle (750 ml) magnum (2xbt) marie jeanne (3xbt) double magnum (4xbt)
jeroboam (4xbt); Burgundy, Champagne jeroboam (6xbt); Bordeaux imperiale (8xbt); Bordeaux methuselah (8xbt); Burgundy
demi bottle (demi) split (1/4 bottle) Champagne
Buyers’ Caution: Levels are as when catalogued; ullage may change due to cork deterioration; other bottle conditions may occur during storage and shipment. Risk of ullage variation and cork deterioration and/or failure is assumed by the buyer at time of sale and no sale cancellations, price negotiations, or bottle substitutions will be undertaken by either Skinner or Lower Falls Wine. Similarly, no substitutions will be made due to inaccurate descriptions. Flights of Lots: Are of the same type, vintage and bottle count and follow one after another numerically, though ullage and bottle conditions may vary. The auctioneer may exercise discretion to offer, in consecutive lot order and at that same price, the following lots in the flight to the first successful bidder of that flight. Subsequently, those lots not purchased will be offered anew and so on. Absentee bids placed on any lot in a flight will be applied to the next lot in the flight (if unsuccessful), until the flight concludes. Environmental Note: It has only been in the last 15-20 years that the wine industry has moved away from using lead capsules to cover the cork and neck of a bottle. When opening an older wine, if you do have a lead capsule, give consideration as to how you dispose of it.
