Fernando, 2006-07. Sonsini is best known for his work depicting Latino day laborers in his neighborhood, the Pico-Union district in Los Angeles. In the present work, the portrait’s frontal and tightly cropped frame evokes a reference to an ID portrait, raising the politically charged issue of immigration and legal documentation. Through his tactile and visceral brushwork, however, Sonsini diffuses the overt politics of this series, focusing on the humanity of his sitters. According to Sonsini, “The information on cards in wallets is of little help to me. For me painting the portrait is about recreating the sensation of presence, the experience of having the sitter in my studio.”1 1. Kim Beil, “John Sonsini,” Profile, Art Ltd., August 2007.

Beal to be Hung on the Walls of the Entrance Hall of the Engineering Building, Princeton University.” The blueprints provide a key to the mural subjects. Gifford Beal was a member of the Class of 1900 at Princeton. The murals, purportedly created to celebrate the bicentennial of Princeton’s founding, were located in the lobby of the John C. Green School of Engineering and presented the significant accomplishments of Joseph Henry (1797-1878). A leading American scientist, Henry was a professor at Princeton from 1832 to 1846, and he went on to become the first Secretary of the Smithsonian Institution, as well as President of the National Academy of Sciences in Washington, D.C. The main panel of the Princeton murals presented “The Demonstration of Electro-Dynamic Inductive Action of Ordinary Electricity at a Remarkable Distance: In Front of Nassau Hall, College of New Jersey, Princeton, 1842.” Other vignettes on the shorter walls included Joseph Henry meeting with Abraham Lincoln to plan the National Academy of Sciences, the weather map at the Smithsonian (1856), and making an electro-magnetic engine at the Albany Academy (1831). A caption from the Princeton Alumni Weekly, Volume 47, p. 60, indicated that Gifford Beal had been awarded funds through the Edwin Austin Abbey Mural Fund, administered by the National Academy of Design, which allowed him to choose the site and subject of his mural. $800-1,200

1298 Wilson DeMeza (American, 18571893)

N.B. Alexander, “The Man Who Knows,” born Claude Alexander Conlin (1880-1954), was a vaudeville headliner from the early 1900s into the 1930s. Although his advertising posters portray him in Indian costume, and all indicate they were printed by Av Yaga, Bombay, these flourishes were probably intended to add to the performer’s mystique. Experts believe that all the posters were actually printed in the United States. (Reynolds, C. Raymond, and Regina Reynolds, 100 years of magic, New York: Grosset & Dunlap, 1976), p. 14.1 1. http://vintage.artehouse.com/perl/options. pl?imageID=1439&productTypeID=1 accessed July 1, 2013.
