N.B. The painting at hand is a copy after an original by Guido Reni now in the collection of the Detroit Institute of Arts, Detroit, Michigan. The authorship of the copy is not known. Dr. Arnauld Brejon of the Louvre viewed this copy in the collection of the Birmingham Museum in 1977 and remarked that the inscription probably once read “Guido Reni fec [name illegible] Inv.” This inscription would likely have listed the copyist’s name. It has been suggested that the copyist was Italian, from the second half of the 17th century. $4,000-6,000

416 John Singer Sargent (American, 1856-1925) Study of a Man’s Head, c. 1878 Unsigned, inscribed “182” and “4242,” with red wax seal remnants on the stretcher. Oil on canvas, 22 x 17 1/4 in. (55.9 x 43.8 cm), framed. Condition: Lined, retouch above and below the varnish layer, surface grime. Provenance: Auguste Alexandre Hirsch; Mme. Hirsch, 1912; M. Knoedler & Co., London, January 7, 1914 (stock no. 5782); presented by Charles S. Carstairs of Knoedler, London, to Mrs. Reginald Nicholson (née Pearson), November 1915 (stock nos. WC 965 and 13621); private Rhode Island collection. Literature: Probably the work listed in Mount 1955, p. 428 (806), dated 1880, as “Gondolier (study of a man). 17 1/4 x 22, formerly Knoedler”; 1957 ed., p. 336 (806); 1969 ed., p. 463 (806); Elaine Kilmurray and Richard Ormond, John Singer Sargent, Figures and Landscapes, 1874-1882, Complete Paintings, Volume IV (New Haven: Yale University Press, 1998), pp. 40, 389, no. 624.
N.B. The present work is recently rediscovered, and had been untraced since its acquisition in 1915 by Mrs. Reginald Nicholson [née Natalie Pearson] (d. 1956). Ms. Pearson was the daughter of Dr. and Mrs. Frederick Stark Pearson of Great Barrington, Massachusetts.1 She married Reginald Nicholson MBE (1869-1946), manager of the London Times, on February 15, 1915. Prior to the London Times, Mr. Nicholson was a manager at the Somerville Electric Light Company (created by Natalie’s father), and later became chief engineer for the Metropolitan Street Railway in New York.2 Like Natalie’s father, Mr. Nicholson was an alumnus of Tufts University, and he also owned a residence in Great Barrington. According to the authors of the catalogue raisonné, the model appears to be the same person as depicted in several other early Sargent studies, and the present work was one of eleven acquired by Knoedler from the collection of Sargent’s studio mate, Auguste Alexandre Hirsch (1833-1912).3 1. 549 Daniel Chester French (American, 18501931) Plaster Bas Relief of Muses, c. 1910 Inscribed “To/Mrs. Henry Warwick/ Compliments of/Daniel C. French/Jan. 22./1910.” in ink l.r. Plaster bas-relief, maximum dimensions 12 1/4 x 15 1/4 x 3/4 in. (31.0 x 38.5 x 2.0 cm), with a wire for hanging embedded in the reverse. Condition: Chip/notch at top center edge, surface grime and accretions. N.B. This plaster of two classical female figures with stringed instruments led by a cherub conductor came from the collection of art and furnishings of Arden Cottage, a summer home built in the late 19th century in Fortune, Prince Edward Island, Canada. Known colloquially as “The Three Graces,” the relief was dedicated as a gift from the artist to Elsa Warwick, said to have been the model for this piece and several of French’s other sculptures, as well as for the illustrator Charles Dana Gibson. The inscription on the plaster appears to be in French’s own hand. New Yorkers, Elsa and her husband, the actor Harry Warwick, were residents of the artists’ colony established in Fortune at the turn of the century. Arden Cottage and its contents, including memorabilia from the original owners (Charles Kent and Betty Barry), were purchased in 1971 from Margaret MacMillan Pratt by the current owners. A letter and a photocopy of a brief printed reminiscence about Arden Cottage accompany the lot.

N.B. Born in Kentucky, Charles Courtney Curran received art training in New York City at the National Academy of Design and the Art Students League, where he was active in the 1880s. He then journeyed to Paris to study at the Académie Julian from 1889 to 1891. In 1903, at the invitation of fellow artist Frederick Dellenbaugh, Curran visited the hamlet of Cragsmoor, an art colony along the Hudson River north of Poughkeepsie that had been founded in the early 1870s and was home to E. L. Henry, J.G. Brown, and other notable painters and illustrators. Curran acquired a studio there in 1910 and divided his time between Cragsmoor and New York City for the rest of his career. It was in Cragsmoor that he developed his hallmark style of figures of young women set in light-filled garden views or against sweeping hilltop vistas. The painting at hand, Apple Perfume, is dated 1911, after his move to Cragsmoor, and captures the delight and simple beauty of a child savoring the scent of a newly picked apple. $50,000-70,000

559 Charles Courtney Curran (American, 18611942) The Water Gate, World’s Columbian Exposition, Chicago, 1893 Signed and dated “CHAS· C· CURRAN· 93” l.r., inscribed “No. XV” in two places on the stretcher. Oil on canvas, 17 1/2 x 12 in. (44.3 x 30.5 cm), framed. Condition: Small puncture to l.l. quadrant, scattered small paint losses, craquelure, stretcher bar marks, surface grime. Provenance: Through the collection of William Knickerbocker Wallbridge (1882-1979) of Connecticut, to the current owner by family descent. N.B. The painting at hand shows elegant strollers at the World’s Fair held in Chicago in 1893. Known to many as the World’s Columbian Exposition, the fair, which celebrated the 400th anniversary of Christopher Columbus’s arrival in the New World, showcased achievements in science, art, and industry from 46 countries around the world. Its location in Chicago was very significant. The city, which had been devastated by the Great Fire of 1871, had to compete with urban rivals such as New York, Washington, and St. Louis for the honor of hosting the fair. The magnificent and successful presentation was visited by over 20 million people and proved to be of lasting social and cultural impact, a defining moment for the host city and for America’s optimistic self-image.
The overall design of the Chicago Columbian Exposition was championed by Daniel Burnham, as Director of Works, and Frederick Law Olmsted, who laid out the grounds. The fair was intended as a prototype of what a modern city should be, helping to inspire the City Beautiful movement. The Beaux Arts style buildings were splendid and impressive. The Court of Honor structures, most of which were designed to be temporary, were clad in white stucco, and these luminous facades, along with the glow provided by the new and extensive use of street lights, earned the fair the sobriquet “The White City.” The design also included a large water pool, symbolizing the long voyage Columbus took to the New World. For Burnham, architecture and sculpture were paramount, and the arts were amply represented throughout the fair. Paintings were housed in the Art Palace. Among the hundreds of works exhibited by artists from American and abroad, Charles Courtney Curran was represented with eleven oils and one pastel drawing, and he was awarded a prize. This composition, which presents the Grand Arch of the Peristyle and Watergate, was made into a chromolithograph, copyright 1894, by The Columbian Memorial Publication Society, published by The Winters Art Litho Co. in the Supplement to the Columbian Series, Vol. 1, No. 2, April 21, 1894. $30,000-50,000

The present work was dedicated to Plaut’s daughter Susan (called Sukie), during a weeklong stay by Kokoschka at the Plaut home on Brattle Street in Cambridge, circa 1949. During this time, Kokoschka was on an intensive lecture and meeting circuit, and for Sukie, the horse was directly expressive. She recalls Kokoschka returning home one evening after giving a lecture at the ICA Boston: “…Being a little kid, I didn’t know how tired he was…and I said, ‘Draw me a horse!’…and he drew this horse looking like it was about to die... And he said ‘That’s how I feel.’ And I said, ‘Really?’ And it is exactly how he felt…it’s a very tired horse.”
591
Plaut had connections to many European artists in the 1950s resulting from his work as one of the Monuments Men, and invited many of them to exhibit at the ICA Boston under his directorship. The work will be included in the third edition of the forthcoming Kokoschka catalogue raisonné of drawings and watercolors; we wish to thank Dr. Alfred Weidinger for his kind assistance with cataloging the lot. $2,500-3,500

Provenance: Collection of David L. Neumann (b. 1902), long-time Santa Fe dealer and scholar on Navajo turquoise, Navajo silversmithing, and American Spanish Colonial crafts. Following his graduation from the University of Michigan in 1925, Neumann attended the Académie Julian and resided in Paris’s Montparnasse. Around 1928, Neumann returned to the United States, where he traveled extensively through the American Southwest, trading on reservations and in Mexico in the 1930s and 1940s. From 1932 to 1954, Neumann contributed a series of articles to the venerable El Palacio magazine on the status of Navajo Indian silverwork. Photographer Manuel Álvarez Bravo documented the work of Mexican mural painters including Diego Rivera. While the subject of the present work is unknown, based on the inscription on the Bravo photograph of the work, it may depict a patron at Neumann’s retail shop in Miami, Florida, called “The Mexican Mart,” which he operated from the early to mid-1930s. Untitled, 2000 No visible signature. Welded nail sphere, diameter approximately 6 in. (15.2 cm). Condition: Intentional oxidation. Provenance: Gift of the artist, sold to benefit Prize4Life, Cambridge, Massachusetts. N.B. On May 13, 2008, NPR broadcast a segment about Brisbee’s work saying, “It all started when Bisbee was a student in college. He was raiding abandoned houses for found objects to use in his art when he came upon an old bucket of nails. “I kicked the bucket and it flipped over,” Bisbee recalls, “and the nails had cohered, oxidized—they’d rusted into the bucket shape. And it was just such an obvious thing of beauty—it was so clearly above anything I had ever envisioned making myself. And I sat down on the bed, and I knew that I needed to get some nails.” Bisbee went to the hardware store and bought $30 worth of brads. He would later move to 1-inch nails, then 2-inch nails, ten-penny nails and 5-inch nails. Over the years, Bisbee has created a surprisingly diverse array of sculptures with the nails—everything from tightly wadded balls of welded brads, to undulating waves of bent nails, to towering brambles of 12-inch spikes.” $1,000-1,500 663

664 John Wesley (American, b. 1928) Landscape with Bathroom, 1978 Signed and dated “John Wesley 1978” l.r., titled above the signature. Ink and gouache on paper, 25 1/2 x 19 5/8 in. (65.0 x 49.8 cm), unframed. Condition: Abrasions to center, tack holes to corners, sheet affixed to backing mat in several places on the reverse.
Provenance: Through the family of the artist. N.B. John Wesley’s Pop artistry illustrates the American psyche through comic-book style imagery that often depicts intimate moments. Wesley’s unique approach to creation was shaped by his early draftsman work interpreting blueprints for the Northrop aircraft company. Filled with whimsy, Wesley’s works combine existing imagery from magazines and books that he traces and transforms into flat representations of a reality imparted with his fantastical vision.
Contemporaries Donald Judd and Dan Flavin were close friends of Wesley’s and proponents of his work. Judd played an integral role in creating the John Wesley Gallery housed in a former horse stable near the last of the six Dan Flavin buildings at the Chinati Foundation in Marfa, Texas. $7,000-9,000

Conditions of Sale 1. Some of the lots in this sale are offered subject to a reserve. The reserve is a confidential minimum price agreed upon by the consignor and Skinner, Inc. below which the lot will not be sold. In most cases, the reserve will be set below the estimated range, but in no case will it exceed the estimates listed. A representative of Skinner, Inc. will execute such reserves by bidding for the consignor. In any event and whether or not a lot is subject to a reserve, the auctioneer may reject any bid or raise not commensurate with the value of such lot. 2. All property is sold “as is, and neither the auctioneer nor any consignor makes any warranties or representation of any kind or nature with respect to the property, and in no event shall they be responsible for the correctness, nor deemed to have made any representation or warranty, of description, genuineness, authorship, attribution, provenance, period, culture, source, origin, or condition of the property and no statement made at the sale, or in the bill of sale, or invoice or elsewhere shall be deemed such a warranty of representation or an assumption of liability. 3. Except as provided in paragraph 1 above, the highest bidder as determined by the auctioneer shall be the purchaser. In the case of a disputed bid, the auctioneer shall have sole discretion in determining the purchaser and may also, at his or her election, withdraw the lot or reoffer the lot for sale. The auctioneer shall have sole discretion to refuse any bid, or refuse to acknowledge any bidder. Any bidder that plans on spending in excess of $100,000 should make arrangements with the accounting department at least five (5) days in advance of the sale, as a deposit may be required to participate. 4. All merchandise purchased must be paid for and removed from the premises the day of the auction. Skinner Inc. may impose, and the purchaser agrees to pay, a monthly interest charge of 1.5% of the purchase price of any lot or item lot not paid for within thirty-five (35) days of the date of sale. Skinner, Inc. shall have no liability for any damage or loss to property left on its premises for more than three (3) days from the date of sale. If any property has not been removed within three (3) days from the date of sale, at the option of Skinner, Inc. Skinner accepts cash or check for payment. Personal checks will be acceptable only if credit has been established with Skinner, Inc. or if a bank authorization has been received guaranteeing a personal check. Skinner, Inc. reserves the right to hold merchandise purchased by personal check until the check has cleared the bank. The purchaser agrees to pay Skinner, Inc. a handling charge of $25.00 for any check dishonored by the drawee. Please contact Accounting for additional payment methods. Skinner does not accept payment by credit card for merchandise purchases. 6. If the purchaser breaches any of its obligations under these Conditions of Sale, including its obligation to pay in full the purchase price of all items for which it was the highest successful bidder, Skinner Inc. may exercise all of its rights and remedies under the law including, without limitation, (a) canceling the sale and applying any payments made by the purchaser to the damages caused by the purchaser’s breach, and/or (b) offering at public auction, without reserve, any lot or item for which the purchaser has breached any of its obligations, including its obligation to pay in full the purchase price, holding the purchaser liable for any deficiency plus all costs of sale. 7. In no event will the liability of Skinner, Inc. to any purchaser with respect to any item exceed the purchase price actually paid by such purchaser for such item. 8. Shipping is the responsibility of the purchaser. Upon request, our staff will provide the list of shippers who deliver to destinations within the United States and overseas. Some property that is sold at auction can be subject to laws governing export from the U.S., such as items that include material from some endangered species. Import restrictions from foreign countries are subject to these same governing laws. Granting of licensing for import or export of goods from local authorities is the sole responsibility of the buyer. Denial or delay of licensing will not constitute cancellation or delay in payment for the total purchase price of these lots. 9. All purchases are subject to the Massachusetts 6.25% sales tax unless the purchaser possesses a Massachusetts sales tax exemption number. Exemption numbers from other states are accepted in Massachusetts if presented with a business card or letterhead. Dealers, museums, and other qualifying parties can apply for a Massachusetts exemption number prior to the auction by contacting the Massachusetts Department of Corporations and Taxation at 100 Cambridge Street in Boston. 10. Bidding on any item indicates your acceptance of these terms and all other terms printed within, posted, and announced at the time of sale whether bidding in person, through a representative, by phone, by Internet, or other absentee bid. 12. Skinner, Inc. and its consignors make no warranty or representation, express or implied, that the purchaser will acquire any copyright or reproduction rights to any lot sold. Skinner, Inc. expressly reserves the right to reproduce any image of the lots sold in this catalog. The copyright in all images, illustrations and written material produced by or for Skinner, Inc. relating to a lot, including the contents of this catalog, is, and shall remain at all times, the property of Skinner, Inc. and shall not be used by the purchaser, nor by anyone else, without our prior written consent. 13. These conditions of sale shall be governed by the laws of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts (excluding the laws applicable to conflicts or choice of law). The buyer/bidder agrees that any suit for the enforcement of this agreement may be brought, and any action against Skinner in connection with the transactions contemplated by this agreement shall be brought, in the courts of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts or any federal court sitting therein. The bidder/buyer consents to the exclusive jurisdiction of such courts and waives objections that it may now or hereafter have to the venue of any such suit.
