Provenance

Edouard Kesner

Dr. Emerson Neil Milligram

Edouard Kesner (1920–2006) grew up in New York City. He made his debut at the age of seven, playing the Paganini Violin Concerto with the Stamford Symphony. He was a graduate of the Juilliard School of Music, and studied with Leopold Auer, among others. He played other instruments including the piano, trombone, and viola. He played with the St. Louis Symphony, Baltimore Symphony, Chautauqua Symphony, Les Brown, the Dorsey Brothers, and under such great conductors as Bruno Walter, Erich Leinsdorf, and Leopold Stokowski. In 1951 he was invited by Mischa Mischakoff to play principal second violin with the Detroit Symphony Orchestra. He was also Concertmaster of the Dearborn Orchestra for 30 years, and taught at Oakland University and Wayne State University. Kesner was on the staff of Motown Records and many of his recordings were used in films.

Dr. Milligram (1932–2012) was the past Concertmaster of the University of Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra and received his Bachelor’s Degree at the University of Pittsburgh, his Master’s Degree at Loyola University in Baltimore, Maryland, and his Ph.D. at the University of Pittsburgh in 1972. He was the founder and Chairman of the Business Department at Carlow University; upon his retirement from Carlow University in 2002, the college established the Dr. Emerson Neil Milligram Exemplary Leadership Award, now given at commencement to a graduating senior.

He also played with the NBC Symphony under Arturo Toscanini.

Mac Marlow Born in Brooklyn, New York, Mac Marlow’s (1915–2013) musical accomplishment started when he was awarded a scholarship from the New York Philharmonic Student Program while attending high school. Professionally he was well-known for expertise with the trombone, violin, and viola. He played with the most popular big bands in the country, including Les Brown, Harry James, Woody Herman, Duke Ellington, Morton Gould, Andre Kostelanetz, County Basie, Vincent Lopez, Ted Lewis, and Charlie Barnett, as well as many lesser-known bands of the big band era. Marlow’s list of performance venues read like a map of famous show business landmarks: Carnegie Hall, the Apollo Theatre, Hotel Taft, The Capitol Theater, and the Copacabana in New York. He also played with the CBS orchestra, and taught at the University of Wisconsin and the Goddard College School of Music in Vermont. Marlow’s friends included Betty Grable, Ella Fitzgerald, Lena Horne, Doc Severinson, and Doris Day, who called him “Marsh Marlow.” He moved to Fort Wayne Indiana in the 1960s, where he was lead violinist in addition to playing the viola for the Fort Wayne Philharmonic. He and his wife, Leonora, opened a music school in Fort Wayne and taught hundreds of students over 50+ years.

Reception & Extended Auction Preview Saturday, November 8 Classical Salon 5:30-7PM Featuring the Arneis Quartet

emmanuel music

Praised for their “beautiful sound” (Beijing Global Times) the Arneis Quartet is proving to be one of the finest emerging ensembles of its generation. “As a relatively young quartet, they have already achieved something it often takes years to develop: a unique, collective sound which is as warm and full of sparkle as liquid gold.” (Boston Musical Intelligencer) Playfully named after the Arneis grape—a varietal that is difficult to grow, but which yields an exquisite white wine—the Boston-based quartet was hand-picked by the St. Lawrence String Quartet for its inaugural John Lad Prize, which included debuts on the Stanford University Lively Arts series and Music on Main in Vancouver. Arneis Quartet received a fellowship at the Aspen Center for Advanced String Quartet Studies for the summer of 2012, and acted as the 2011 Young Artist Fellows for the Apple Hill Center for Chamber Music. The Quartet has also attended Juilliard Quartet Seminar, the Deer Valley Emerging Quartets and Composers Program, and the Banff Centre Chamber Music Residency. In 2011 they received a grant from Meet the Composer for new works premiered during the 2010-2011 season, and brought music of Jonathan Berger and Brian Ferneyhough to the 2011 Beijing Modern Music Festival and the Shanghai Conservatory of Music. Recent performance venues include Swarthmore College, Hawthorne Barn in Provincetown, Massachusetts, and the Concord Free Public Library. Celebrating their fifth anniversary during the 2014-15 season, Arneis Quartet will perform on the Alcyon, Winsor Music, and Emmanuel Music chamber series. This season also brings interdisciplinary collaborations with Boston University Center for the Humanities. Four unique concerts and symposiums between December 2014 and April 2015 will explore the intersection of poetry and music in works of John Harbison, Lee Hyla, Sofia Gubaidulina, and Beethoven among others. Arneis Quartet currently collaborates with Emmanuel Music to present educational outreach programs throughout the city of Boston. Through Emmanuel Music‘s “Community Connections” program, the Quartet’s outreach includes performance, masterclasses and collaborations with students. They have worked with music students at the Boston Arts Academy, Perkins School for the Blind, and the Boston Public Schools. Outside of their Boston home, the Quartet has taught masterclasses at Swarthmore College and acted as guest faculty at the Lyceum Music Festival in Park City Utah, and have brought musical outreach to communities in California, Michigan, Ohio, and Reggio Emilia, Italy. Arneis Quartet is the faculty ensemble in residence at the Dana Hall School of Music. The Quartet members are on the faculties of Boston University, Brookline Public Schools, the Chestnut Hill School, and act as coaches for the Boston Youth Symphony Orchestras. All alumni of Boston University, the Arneis Quartet has coached with members of the Muir, St. Lawrence, Brentano, Emerson and Juilliard quartets as well as Bayla Keyes, Earl Carlyss, Mary Ruth (UV) Ray, James Dunham, Sylvia Rosenberg, Henk Guittart, Alasdair Tait, Roger Tapping, Leonard Matczynski, Joan Tower and Donald Weilerstein. Arneis has performed with guest artists including the Saint Lawrence String Quartet, Marc Johnson, Peter Zazofsky, Ursula Holliger, Jessica Zhou, Kevin Loucks, Michelle LaCourse, and Gabriel Kahane.
