126 Webb “Bronze” Glass Vase Iridescent art glass Stourbridge, England, c. 1885 Flared rim on cylindrical form with wide circular base, double handled, with applied prunts, iridescent metallic surface, polished pontil signed J Webb, imperfections in the making, roughness at base edge, ht. 12 1/8 in. Note: Thomas Webb & Sons patent application, August 29, 1877, granted Feb 27, 1878. This treatment was to mimic Roman and other ancient glass, being excavated at the time, which had a natural iridescence due to soil contact. It is produced by exposure of the glass in a semi-molten state to fumes of chloride of tin, alone or mixed with the nitrates of barium and strontium. The following commentary by Her Majesty, Queen Victoria, with specific reference to Tho. Webb and Sons “Bronze Glass”: “On a recent visit to Mr Goode’s attractive galleries at Audley Street, we noticed a fine selection of the new Bronze Glass, discovered and made by Messrs. Thomas Webb and Sons, of Stourbridge. Its purple bronze surface shines with the hues of the rainbow, such as they appear on molten lead, or on pieces of steel which have been tempered in gradually diminishing degrees of heat. It has already attracted considerable attention at the Paris Exhibition.” See pp. 247-248 in Nineteenth Century Glass, by A.C. 136 Rare Jules Habert-Dys (French, 1850-1924) Vase Art glass France, c. 1907 Vasiform transparent glass with metallic oxide overlay with cut and etched surface of stylized thistle design signed by the artist at base, ht. 14 1/4 in. Note: Examples of work by Habert-Dys can be found in the collections of the Musée des Arts Décoratifs and Musée d’Orsay, Paris, and the Minneapolis Institute of Arts, Minneapolis. Jules Auguste Habert was born into a poor family but his early talent for drawing was recognized and he was apprenticed to draw. From there he progressed to the field of ceramics. His exceptional skill as a draughtsman led to him exhibiting two earthenware panels at the Paris Salon des Artistes Français in 1876. His skills were broadened by a period at the Haviland workshop. His medium changed and his audience grew between 1881 and 1887 when he executed 500 drawings for the magazine L’Art. It was at this time that he began to sign his work “Habert-Dys” (Dys having been his mother’s maiden name). In 1907, HabertDys was appointed Professor of Drawing at the École Nationale des Arts Décoratifs, and he began experiments in glass making. His work in glass and lacquer continued until the outbreak of the first World War when his wife’s failing health and financial difficulties curtailed his practical work. Although working in the design world for more than forty years, examples of Habert-Dys’s own creations are scarce and rarely appear on the international market. The Estate of Mary Griggs Burke Lots 396-447

The Mary Griggs Burke Estate includes the furnishings of the Burke house, on Centre Island in Oyster Bay, New York, overlooking Long Island Sound. Designed and furnished by Boston architect Ben Thompson, the home was featured in the book Design Research: The Store That Brought Modern Living To American Homes. In 1956, the magazine Architectural Record reviewed the home for its architecture and elaborate Japanese-style garden. Mary Griggs Burke was best known for her passionate collecting of Japanese ceramics. To house her collection and find furnishings of good design, she turned to Thompson, who was well known in architectural circles as the founder of The Architects Collaborative (TAC). Over a two-year period (1952-54), Thompson constructed a modern home for Burke that took advantage of the views of Long Island Sound and included carefully chosen and placed furnishings provided by Design Research in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Founded by Ben Thompson, the store became the place to go for modern design during the middle of the century. In his work on the Burke house, Thompson combined his own designs with the Danish modern aesthetic that was so popular at Design Research. This catalog offers a glimpse of the interiors in situ through the photography of André Kertész. Today, the beautiful and mature home has stood the test of time. Skinner is pleased to offer early Design Research furnishings from the Burke house at auction.
