The Barrons were a couple who knew what they liked. Whether it was working together in the successful furniture leasing business that Carl founded in the late 1930s, raising a family of five children, or spending a few well-earned moments of leisure browsing through antiques shops and shows to build their vast collections of Wedgwood pottery, art glass, silver and Chinese snuff bottles, Carl and Ruth were an exceptional team. They brought the same qualities of deliberation, judgment and decisive action to collecting that served them so well in the business world. Also, unlimited charm, tact, and the capacity to drive a ferocious bargain! Almost inevitably, their accomplishments in both business and collecting grew to epic proportions. The Barron family had owned property on Cape Cod as early as 1928, so it is perhaps not surprising that in the early 1990s Ruth and Carl developed a special interest in collecting glass from the celebrated Cape Cod town of Sandwich, Massachusetts. Ruth was attracted to the light ruby color that collectors have christened “cranberry,” while Carl focused his attention on the colored flint glass of the 1840s and 1850s. Their standards were exacting. With few exceptions, vases and candlesticks were only purchased as complete pairs. Rarity, outstanding condition and visual appeal were prerequisite. Books were studied, museums visited, seminars attended, and in the span of just a few years the Barrons became deeply knowledgeable in this highly esteemed area of early American glass. Carl and Ruth’s interest in art glass likewise dates back to the 1990s, but had its germination decades earlier. In the1950s the Barrons expanded their furniture store inventory to include glass bought from the Gundersen-Pairpoint glassworks in New Bedford, which closed in 1957. As collectors, they began to hunt avidly for Gundersen-Pairpoint glass, but soon became even more captivated with the Victorian art glass of the company’s New Bedford predecessor, the Mt. Washington Glass Company. At the time this glass was made, in the late 19th century, New Bedford was known as the “art glass capital” of the country. True to form, the Barrons focused on only those categories of Mt. Washington glass that held strongest personal appeal, in particular the Crown Milano line made during the 1880s and 1890s. Today their collection of Crown Milano ranks as one of the most extensive ever assembled. Carl and Ruth Barron were “larger-than-life” figures at work and at play. They contributed significantly to the economic growth of their beloved city of Cambridge, Massachusetts. Their acts of civic responsibility are celebrated across that city, and they approached collecting with the same passion and sense of purpose. Each category of antiques that caught their attention became, for them, a learning experience, a celebration of beauty and history, and an opportunity to interact with a new community of fellow students who quickly became devoted friends. Through their generous support of the New Bedford Museum of Glass, in particular, they sought to share their passion with the larger public. The Barrons would take great pleasure in the thought that, through this sale, each of their treasures will now become an emissary of values that were central to their lives—values promoting the importance of knowledge, sharing, discipline, and pride in accomplishment. They knew what they liked, and today they share it with a new generation.
