Perrotti-Brown for TWA, 96 pts. 05/11 1 bottle (ogb) $175-250 1006 Moet & Chandon Dom Perignon Rose 2002 Epernay “Unfortunately there is only one new release from Dom Perignon on the market, but what a wine it is! The 2002 Brut Rose explodes from the glass with endless layers of huge, voluptuous fruit. A big, full-bodied wine, the 2002 is probably the most overly vinous, intense Rose ever made by long-time Chef de Caves Richard Geoffroy. Layers of cool, insistent minerality balance the fruit beautifully on the crystalline, vivid finish. The 2002 will be nearly impossible to resist young, but take my word for it; the wine is extremely closed right now. Anticipated maturity: 2015-2032. A. Loads of pure blueberry, blackberry and cassis fruit are present along with a hint of licorice and background oak. It is full-bodied, ripe, and excruciatingly fresh, vigorous and exuberant. This is a tour de force, and a sensational effort that rivals the first growths. Give it another 5-10 years of cellaring, and drink it over the following 30-40 years.” R. 1159 Ygrec d’Yquem 2006 Bordeaux “I rarely get a chance to taste this wine, and I certainly wonder why after tasting this fabulous, full-bodied, dry white Bordeaux. A terrific effort from manager Pierre Lurton and his staff, this totally dry wine offers up exotic tropical fruit notes, especially pineapple, along with some subtle smoky oak and mandarin orange. With terrific texture, a sensational mouthfeel, but with zesty acidity and a subtle use of wood, this is a fabulous effort that will probably last quite a long time, but who is going to age this wine, when it drinks so great at present? A tour de force in dry white winemaking!” R. Parker for TWA, 94 pts. 02/09 3 bottles $300-450

Somewhat unusually, this is also quite finely detailed and while this is openly powerful, it’s not at all rustic or tough though it is exceptionally tight and backward at present on the impeccably well-balanced finish. This is even more restrained than the Rugiens and like its stable mate, it’s pointless to acquire this without the express intension of forgetting it in your cellar. This wine, which emerges from largely prephylloxera vines planted on the dome of Hermitage, adjacent to the chapel that is perched there so photogenically, possesses extraordinary finesse and elegance. It reveals notes of liquid minerals intermixed with kirsch liqueur and blackberries. While it never possesses the power and breadth of flavor of Le Meal or Le Pavillon, l’Ermite appears to be a hypothetical blend of Bordeaux’s Lafleur and Ausone as it always displays a certain austerity early in life. The extraordinary 2000 flirts with perfection. A provocative wine with great minerality, finesse, and delineation, it blew me away when I tasted it from bottle.” R. Elegant and much purer than expected from the nose, this fairly finesse-full Chenin balances its sweetness with extract, mineral flavors and a firm acidity. The finish is slightly rustic and tannic from this bottle (the cork was wet and black on the upper end). ‘The spring of 1985 was unusually dry and there is a common theme throughout the appellation in that the blocked maturity meant that the wines have remained muted and have never really opened up,’ writes Richard Kelley on his website. ‘It was the first vintage since 1973 that any moëlleux was produced at Huet.’” S. The seductive allure of the 2007 is nowhere to be found. Instead, the 2006 is built on a serious spine of formidable tannin and dark red/black fruit. Hints of tar, licorice, rose petals and tobacco inform the powerful, virile finish. The 2006 is going to require considerable patience, but it is clearly a jewel of a wine, even at this early stage. Anticipated maturity: 2016-2046.” A. Galloni for TWA, 97 pts. 04/12 6 bottles (owc) $425-600 1290 Poggione Brunello di Montalcino Riserva Vigna Paganelli 2007 Tuscany A. A translucent dark ruby, this weightless yet sumptuous Barolo bursts from the glass with layers of dark ripe fruit that coat the palate with stunning grace and elegance. As it sits in the glass notes of licorice, tar and sweet toasted oak gradually emerge to complete this magnificent wine. I tasted this along with the 2001, which has shut down considerably since I last tasted it earlier this year. Today the 2004 is the more elegant wine although the 2001 looks to be more powerful and perhaps longer-lived. My rating of the 2001 (95) appears to have been conservative by about 2 points. One of the highlights of the vintage, Sandrone’s 2004 Barolo Cannubi Boschis is not to be missed.” A. Galloni for TWA, 98 pts. 12/07 1 magnum $300-400

1299 Paolo Scavino Barolo Bric del Fiasc 1989 Piedmont u: bottom neck “The 1989 Barolo Bric del Fiasc (3-liter) is still striking for its freshness. Some of that is a factor of the large format, but standard bottles have also developed very positively. Here we find a classic flavor profile of tobacco, herbs, spices, plums and licorice with the depth, muscle and concentration of the modern school. The 1989 is a touch more layered and aromatically intense than the 1990, with an additional measure of length and overall complexity. Tar, smoke and licorice linger on an eternal finish. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2025.” A. Galloni for TWA, 95 pts. 02/10 5 bottles $600-800 1300 Paolo Scavino Barolo Bric del Fiasc 1990 Piedmont u: into neck “The 1990 vintage may have given Scavino a little more to work with as his 1990 Barolo Bric del Fiasc (3-liter) is utterly profound. Rich, dark and sensual, the wine flows onto the palate with marvelous concentration and depth. Layers of menthol, spices, sweet roses and dark fruit swirl around in the glass as this magnificent, regal Barolo struts its stuff. A veritable fountain of youth, this towering Barolo promises to drink spectacularly well for another two decades. From a standard bottle the 1990 is approachable, but readers lucky enough to own large formats will want to find a way to wait a few more years. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2030.” A. At this point, it is tasting like a vigorous young adolescent in its evolutionary development. The blend in 2002 from the winery was 71% Cabernet Sauvignon, 12% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Franc and 7% Petit Verdot. Moreover there are just under 3,000 cases of this spectacular wine, which I’m hoping many readers have cellared away. Inky black/purple, with a nose of incense, licorice, balsamic and Asian soy notes interwoven with blackberry, blueberry and hints of truffle and camphor, this wine is full-bodied, opulent and voluptuously textured, with sensational mid-palate, depth and richness. This is a killer Bordeaux-styled, ripe, exuberant, flamboyant red from Peter Michael that stands as one of the all-time great Les Pavots cuvees ever made. It ideally needs another 3-4 years of cellaring, although it is quite accessible and should keep for a minimum of 20 or more years. Bravo!” R. 1381 Joseph Phelps Insignia 1994 Napa “The 1994 boasts an inky/purple color along with a glorious nose of black raspberries, blackberries and black currants that is still somewhat primary despite nearly 18 years in bottle. The Phelps team kept this cuvee in 100% new French oak for 28 months. Its magnificent structure, intensity and purity of fruit, ripeness, balance combined with authoritative power and the magnetic appeal of this full-bodied, Bordeaux-styled wine are extraordinary. This amazing effort is just coming into its best years, and should drink well for at least another 15-20 years.” R. Fullbodied with sensational purity, a multidimensional mouthfeel and a long, voluptuous finish with no hard edges, it has only reached mid-adolescence, and has at least two decades of life ahead of it.” R. Parker for TWA, 98 pts. 11/13 1 bottle $150-175 1383 Joseph Phelps Insignia 1997 Napa “An inky/plum/purple color is accompanied by a stunning bouquet of violets, charcoal, creme de cassis and a hint of toast. Prodigious when it hits the palate with a full-bodied expansiveness, there is not a hard edge to be found in the 1997, only velvety tannins, compelling depth and fruit intensity, and stunning purity. It is a perfect expression of Napa viticulture and wine that should continue to age effortlessly for two decades or more.” R. 1396 Ridge Monte Bello 1981 Santa Cruz u: very top shoulder, lightly bin-soiled labels “Absolutely spectacular, the 1991 Monte Bello comes from a low tannin year where the estate was wondering how well the wine would age. I’m happy to report it has aged brilliantly! Fully mature, yet still youthful and lively, it offers tons of cassis, underbrush, spice and dried herbs to go with a fullbodied, utterly seamless, sexy feel on the palate that just keeps you coming back to the glass. Given the balance, it will hold nicely going forward, but there’s no upside to further cellaring.” J. Dunnuck for TWA, 97 pts. 10/15 2 bottles $150-250 1397 Ridge Monte Bello 2002 Santa Cruz R. 1385 Joseph Phelps Insignia 2002 Napa “The 2002 boasts an inky/purple color along with notes of graphite, violets, blackberries, creme de cassis and hints of charcoal and barbecue in addition to a full-bodied, multilayered mouthfeel that builds incrementally with great purity, staggering fruit concentration, and a long, velvety, 50+-second finish. This prodigious effort should continue to drink well for 20+ years.” R. Parker for TWA, 100 pts. 11/13 1 bottle $200-300

Ullage (Level of Wine) Illustration and Interpretations For Bordeaux, Port, and other shouldered bottles n. bn. vts. ts. hs. ms. lms. s.
ullage is into neck bottom neck very top shoulder top shoulder; usual level for Bordeaux older than 15 yrs high shoulder; usual cork reduction, often found in Bordeaux over 20 yrs, low risk mid shoulder; variation likely as indicates cork deterioration low mid shoulder; some risks, reflected in estimates shoulder; risky, reflected in estimates into neck bottom neck very top shoulder top shoulder high shoulder mid shoulder low mid shoulder shoulder
Ullage of wines of vintages fifteen years and younger may be assumed to be of bottom neck or better unless otherwise noted. Similarly, regarding older vintages, lack of notation indicates acceptable and appropriate ullage, clear label and sound cork; potential bidders must be prepared for reasonable variations in ullage in all vintages older than 20 years. Bidders with specific condition questions should contact the Fine Wines department. Conditions generally not noted on group lots. Bordeaux wines are cataloged referencing the 1855 classification. Chateau Petrus cataloging reflects the practice of granting it 1er Cru Classe and other notable Pomerol Chateaux are designated Cru Classe. All Bordeaux wines may assume to be chateau bottled unless otherwise stated. It is standard practice for Skinner/Lower Falls Wine to open all original wooden cases (owc) for visual inspection. The opening of banded cases will be determined on an individual basis. For Burgundy, German wines and all other more gradually slope-shouldered bottles, the ullage measurement is taken in centimeters from cork base, e.g. 3cm, 5cm, 7cm. Bottle Sizes bottle (750 ml) magnum (2xbt) marie jeanne (3xbt) double magnum (4xbt)
jeroboam (4xbt); Burgundy, Champagne jeroboam (6xbt); Bordeaux imperiale (8xbt); Bordeaux methuselah (8xbt); Burgundy
demi bottle (demi) split (1/4 bottle) Champagne
Buyers’ Caution: Levels are as when cataloged; ullage may change due to cork deterioration; other bottle conditions may occur during storage and shipment. Risk of ullage variation and cork deterioration and/or failure is assumed by the buyer at time of sale and no sale cancellations, price negotiations, or bottle substitutions will be undertaken by either Skinner or Lower Falls Wine. Similarly, no substitutions will be made due to inaccurate descriptions. Flights of Lots: Are of the same type, vintage and bottle count and follow one after another numerically, though ullage and bottle conditions may vary. The auctioneer may exercise discretion to offer, in consecutive lot order and at that same price, the following lots in the flight to the first successful bidder of that flight. Subsequently, those lots not purchased will be offered anew and so on. Absentee bids placed on any lot in a flight will be applied to the next lot in the flight (if unsuccessful), until the flight concludes. Environmental Note: It has only been in the last 15-20 years that the wine industry has moved away from using lead capsules to cover the cork and neck of a bottle. When opening an older wine, if you do have a lead capsule, give consideration as to how you dispose of it.
