Condition: Lined, fine craquelure, surface grime. Provenance: A Massachusetts estate. N.B. Edmund Darch Lewis was born in Philadelphia and began to study art in his teens in private classes with Paul Weber. He gained recognition early for his landscapes and marine views, focusing on the Lehigh, Susquehanna, and Wissahickon Rivers of Pennsylvania. Lewis achieved both critical and financial success as a young man.

Exhibiting for the first time at age 19 at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, he was elected an Associate of the Academy at age 24 and a full Academician two years later in 1862. Lewis also exhibited at the Boston Athenaeum and the National Academy of Design in New York in the 1860s. His grand, romantic landscapes from 1860-76, often featuring the Catskills or the White Mountains, have been compared to those of his contemporaries Frederick Church and Albert Bierstadt. In the painting at hand, possibly the Susquehanna, Lewis portrays the magnificence of nature, filling the canvas with precise detail but also enhancing the most picturesque aspects of the landscape to create dramatic effect. $20,000-30,000

N.B. This work, which appears to be unfinished, has the stylistic hallmarks of Sully’s portraits, especially the shadow under the nose and the treatment of the tendrils of hair. The head wrap was also a typical Sully device. The sitter resembles the artist’s wife, Sarah, whose image is known from earlier portraits. That this is unfinished is suggested by the incomplete glazing in the neck and bodice. $2,500-3,500

269 Martin Johnson Heade (American, 18191904) Pink Rose Signed and dated “MJ Heade/1878.” l.l. Oil on canvas, 15 1/4 x 10 1/4 in. (38.8 x 26.0 cm), framed. Condition: Lined, minor retouch, areas of possible skinning. Provenance: Sir Morton Peto, Estate of Charlotte M. Ober, to a Private Collection, to Christie’s New York, December 6, 1991, Lot 63, through to the current private New York collection by family descent. Literature: Stebbins, Theodore E., Martin Johnson Heade, Janet L. Comey, and Karen E. Quinn, The Life and Work of Martin Johnson Heade: A Critical Analysis and Catalogue Raisonné (New Haven: Yale University Press, 2000), no. 460. N.B. Martin Johnson Heade was born in 1819 in rural Pennsylvania, and began painting at the age of eighteen. He spent the next forty years traveling around the United States as well as going abroad to Europe to paint. In 1858, he moved to New York City and settled into the Tenth Street Studio Building, where he painted alongside many of the leading artists of the Hudson River School. He began painting still lifes when he moved to New York; these mainly consisted of arrangements of flowers in vases. In his later years, he painted magnolias and roses in a different manner: reclining on a table instead of in a vase, and by themselves and amongst other types of flowers. These later still lifes also reflect a great attention to detail, surprising for an artist near the last years of his life.1

317 Natalia Sergeevna Goncharova (Russian, 1881-1962) Set Design for Le Coq d’Or Unsigned, inscribed “1914” on the verso. Gouache on paper mounted to canvas, 22 x 37 in. (55.8 x 93.9 cm), unframed. Condition: Small area of paint abrasion, discoloration, staining. Provenance: Tajan, Paris, to the current owner.

N.B. Natalia Sergeevna Goncharova was a leading member of the Russian avant-garde. At the beginning of the 20th century she— together with members of the group Donkey’s Tail that included Kazimir Malevich, Alexander Shevchenko, and Vladimir Tatlin —developed a modernist style that combined bold colors, expressive lines, and a penchant for folk subject matter. Goncharova’s art advanced quickly and, in the years just prior to World War I, she created Futurist inspired abstract paintings called Rayism (Luchizm). She was unbound by the flat, two-dimensional canvas surface, and extended her creative impulse to three-dimensional set designs when she was commissioned by Serge Diaghilev, famous impresario and founder of the Ballet Russes, to create the stage and costumes for his forthcoming 1914 production of RimskyKorsakov’s Le Coq d’Or.

The 1914 production was at the Paris Opera and Goncharova jumped at the chance to visit Paris. Le Coq d’Or sets and costumes evoke both the medieval Russia of Tsar Dodon and the oriental exoticism of the Queen of Shemakha. This painting, in particular, depicts the Tsar’s palace. Goncharova referenced the architectural forms of the late 19th century Russian Nationalist Revival. She brightened the stage with colorful, stylized ornamentation that incorporated elements from the Russian folk art tradition. Her contribution to Le Coq d’Or made Goncharova successful overnight and she went on to create many other stage and costume designs. Except for a brief return to Moscow during the war, Goncharova settled in Paris. $25,000-35,000

318 Pavel Tchelitchew (Russian/American, 1898-1957) Group of Dancers in a Scene from L’Errante Signed and dated “P Tchelitchew/NY 35” l.l., identified on a label on the frame backing. Provenance: The Robert Bunting Dance Collection, American & European Works of Art, Skinner, Inc., September 20, 2013, Sale 2673B, Lot 439.

N.B. The ballet L’Errante, or The Wanderer, with music by Franz Schubert (Wanderer-Fantasie, transcribed by Franz Liszt), orchestration by Charles Koechlin, choreography by George Balanchine, scenery and costumes by Pavel Tchelitchew, had its world premier in Paris with Les Ballets 1933, Théâtre des Champs-Élysées, June 10, 1933. Later that year Balanchine came to New York at the invitation of Lincoln Kirstein and together they founded The School of American Ballet in early 1934, as well as a touring company, The American Ballet, in 1935. L’Errante was staged again by Balanchine in 1935 for The American Ballet Ensemble at the Metropolitan Opera Company. The ballet retained the ethereal look of the original production, with some figures interpreted as shadows or “phantoms of the storm.”1 1. 327 Louis Valtat (French, 1869-1952) Fleurs Variées Signed “L.V.” l.l., dated “1904” on a presentation plaque and on a label from the Galerie Charpentier, Paris, on the reverse. Oil on paper mounted to panel, 16 1/4 x 20 in. (41.3 x 50.9 cm), framed. Condition: Minor surface grime. Provenance: By descent to the current New Jersey estate.

N.B. Valtat was born in the small Normandy town of Dieppe in 1869 into a wealthy family of ship owners. Supported by his father, an amateur landscape painter, Valtat attended the prestigious École des Beaux-Arts and the Académie Julian. As a young artist, Valtat was influenced by Gauguin’s synthetist method of painting, which aspired to subjectively combine natural forms with pure lines, colors, and form. He was also inspired by Paul Signac’s pointillist technique—the application of pure color dots on the canvas surface—as he had the opportunity to study with the artist when he visited him in Saint-Tropez for a summer, most probably in 1903. In many ways, Valtat had been already working in the Fauvist style before the movement burst onto the Parisian art scene with the 1905 presentation at the Salon d’Automne.

His simplified forms and bold colors coincided exactly with the work of Henri Matisse, Raoul Dufy, Andre Derain, and Maurice Vlaminck. Exhibiting with these artists, Valtat was caught up in the scandal and success of the Fauvist movement. This particular painting depicts one of Valtat’s favorite subjects: flowers. He was an enthusiastic gardener and often painted directly from life. Here, foliage and blossoms in yellow, pink, and blue completely cover the canvas, flattening the surface with their allover effect. There is a wonderful sense of movement and rhythm to the composition as the blooms swirl and curl. Petals and leaves have been rendered with singular brushstrokes reminiscent of pointillism, and the colors remain fearlessly strong, in the Fauvist spirit. $50,000-75,000

Eberhard had been a protégé, friend, and sculpture assistant to Rodin, and, after Rodin’s death in 1917, received some of the master’s tools. 371 Mordecai Ardon (Polish, 1896-1992) Near Jerusalem, 1946 Unsigned. Oil on canvas, 22 3/4 x 31 1/4 in. (57.7 x 79.3 cm), framed. Condition: Fine, stable craquelure, surface grime. Provenance: The estate of composer Gunther Schuller, Boston. Literature: Michele Vishny, Mordecai Ardon (New York: Abrams Artbooks, 1974), p. 224, no. 71, pl. 62 (b&w). Exhibitions: Paintings by M. Ardon-Bronstein, The Jewish Museum, New York, January 22– March 17, 1948, cat. no. 14.

N.B. Israeli, Jewish modernist painter Mordecai Ardon was born in 1896 in what is now Poland. He is known for creating largescale semiabstract-style paintings filled with mystical connotations that are deeply moving. Ardon studied at the Bauhaus, and among his teachers were Lyonel Feininger, Paul Klee, Wassily Kandinsky, and Johannes Itten. Having mastered the expressive potential of simple color and form, he continued his studies by learning old master works at the Academy of Decorative Arts in Munich. The rise of the Nazi regime forced Ardon to flee the country and he settled in Jerusalem in 1933. There he became a teacher at the country’s chief art academy, the Bezalel School of Arts and Crafts, and eventually, its director.

Ardon’s interest in Jewish history and his own spirituality intensified after he moved to Jerusalem. He predominantly painted semiabstract landscapes, rendering his new city’s hills and valleys with dramatic tones and stirring rhythms, as we see here. The gentle sloping landscape is animated by choppy, virtuoso brushwork and brilliant colors. Inspired by his study of Kabbalistic literature, Ardon developed a vocabulary of pictorial symbols and, elsewhere, broached difficult subjects such as the Holocaust. His most famous commission was a stained-glass window entitled Isaiah’s Vision of Eternal Peace, for the National Jewish University and Library in Jerusalem. $75,000-125,000

Oil on canvas, 6 x 10 in. (15.2 x 25.4 cm), framed. Condition: Slight canvas warping, surface grime. Provenance: By family descent to the current owner.

140

N.B. Japanese born painter, printmaker, and photographer Yasuo Kuniyoshi immigrated to America when he was just sixteen years old. He rose to prominence in the New York art scene during the 1920s, after having spent four years at the Art Students League. It is at this time that he created his most original work, painting imaginary landscapes inhabited by animals, houses, and figures that cleverly combined the atmospheric effects of painting and the stretchiness of drawing. In this landscape, the space is tilted and flattened reminiscent of Japanese woodblock prints, and we see a lonely streetcar making its way through the hilly, windy terrain. Kuniyoshi was always aware that he was a Japanese national living in America, and his art reflects his multicultural identity. He drew equally on American folk art, Japanese iconography, and European modernism to create a unique visual style. $5,000-7,000

379 Raoul Dufy (French, 1877-1953) Régates à Trouville Signed “Raoul Dufy” l.r., identified on a label from Colman Art Gallery, Philadelphia, affixed to the reverse. Oil on canvas, 15 x 18 1/4 in. (38.1 x 46.4 cm), framed. Condition: Craquelure to heavy impasto areas in the center of the painting, fine craquelure over entire surface, surface grime. Provenance: Purchased in Paris in the early 1950s, to a private Virginia collection. N.B. Legend has it that upon painter Raoul Dufy’s death, Henri Matisse proclaimed: “Dufy’s work will live!” Dufy had mutual esteem for his fellow Fauvist painter and was greatly influenced by his work at the infamous 1905 exhibition at the Salon d’Automne. There, Dufy had a revelation and said: “How can I use these means [the pigments and brushes] to express not what I see, but what is, what exists for me, my reality?…To study sunlight is a waste of time. Light in painting is something quite apart: it is composed, it is arranged, and it is colored.”

From that moment, Dufy used bold, bright colors and vivid brushstrokes to depict lighthearted garden parties, breezy regattas, and velocious horse races. Born Raoul-Ernest-Joseph Dufy on June 3, 1877, in Le Havre, a busy seaport on the north bank of the Seine estuary, the young artist showed talent at an early age. In 1900, the town of Le Havre awarded him a grant to study art in Paris where he learned, and then had to unlearn, the lessons from the Academy des Beaux Arts. Although based in Paris, Dufy traveled extensively throughout France, often finding himself drifting towards the coast to capture scenic sea views. Like the Impressionists, Dufy frequently painted a large number of pictures of the same motif, varying ever so slightly certain compositional details and color hues. Unlike that earlier generation of artists, Dufy’s audacious colors radically departed from natural hues, exuding the confidence of his Fauvist counterparts.

using thick black outlines and gestural brushstrokes. Seemingly superimposed over this view of Trouville, are large, bright sections of blue, green, and red. These areas of pigment are dissociated from the descriptive task of rendering the arresting view, and yet the colors dramatize the regatta. Coincidentally, Claude Monet painted the same harbor some 56 years before Dufy. This would not have been lost on the Fauvist, who at the time had, at last, attained considerable fame. While Monet diligently depicted the reflections of sails and hulls on the shimmering water, Dufy abstracted from nature to render the same view with chromatic brilliance and dynamic force. A certificate of authenticity issued by Raoul Dufy scholar Fanny Guillon-Laffaille will accompany the lot. $120,000-180,000

This painting of the regattas at Trouville was most probably completed in 1935 when Dufy was at the peak of his career. Boats bob lightly through the choppy waters as they enter the harbor. Dufy simplified the schooners, and overlooking buildings to their essential forms

381 Lyonel Feininger (American, 1871-1956) Old Powder Tower Signed “Feininger” l.l., dated “27.9.42” l.r. Ink and watercolor on paper, 7 1/2 x 11 1/3 in. (19.0 x 29.0 cm), framed. Condition: Light-struck, taped (3/16 inches wide) along outside of the edges of paper, puncture l.r. corner. Provenance: A private Missouri collection. N.B. Lyonel Feininger, born to German émigré parents in Manhattan, New York, in 1871, lived most of his adult life in Germany as an ex-pat. He began his career as a caricaturist and illustrator, and his work was extremely sought after in Berlin at the turn of the 20th century. However, Feininger longed to establish himself as an artist and, in effect, taught himself how to paint.

Starting in 1906, Feininger travelled back and forth between Paris and Berlin where he become involved with the French Fauvist movement and German Expressionist Blaue Reiter group. It is at this moment, just before the start of World War I that Feininger’s style matured and he found his own distinct form between the different influential European avant-garde movements. After the war, Feininger joined the faculty of the new experimental Bauhaus school, run by the architect Walter Gropius. There he taught painting. He started taking regular trips to the Baltic Sea as a respite from teaching. In particular, we know that he took the first of such trips with Gropius and Wassily Kandinsky in August 1922. This watercolor depicts the Powder Tower in Greifswald on the Baltic Sea, and probably is dated 1925. There are several other watercolors, as well as sketches, dated 1925 of this motif.

Most importantly, the Powder Tower is rendered in the paintings Der Pulverturm I (The Powder Tower I), 1927 (Hess 285) and Der Pulverturm II (The Powder Tower II), 1934 (Hess 361). Feininger found a sense of tranquility in the small fishing villages along the Baltic coast. The sweeping vistas of the landscape’s storm-blown dunes appealed to the artist’s sense of spirituality. He would return here every summer until his eventual departure for America in 1936, where another chapter of his life would begin. Achim Moeller, Managing Principal of The Lyonel Feininger Project LLC, New York Berlin has confirmed the authenticity of this work, which is registered under no. 1370-0222-16. $20,000-40,000

385 Alfred Maurer (American, 1868-1932) Plums and Pears Signed “A Maurer” u.r., identified on labels from the deCordova Museum, Lincoln, Massachusetts, and Buchholz Gallery, Curt Valentin, New York, affixed to the frame and reverse, respectively. Oil on panel, 18 1/4 x 21 1/2 in. (46.3 x 54.6 cm), framed. Condition: Varnish discoloration, surface grime, with an oil sketch, signed “A.H. Maurer” u.l., with multiple losses and abrasions, on the reverse.

Provenance: From the collection of Hudson Dean Walker, by gift to Mrs. Joshua Binion Cahn, by gift to the deCordova Sculpture Garden and Museum, Lincoln, Massachusetts. N.B. Alfred Maurer was an American modernist painter based in New York. Trained as a lithographer, he began his career as a self-assured realist. He travelled to Paris in early 1897 and briefly attended the Académie Julian. He continued to work in a conservative, naturalistic style until 1904, when he abruptly changed his aesthetic completely. Upon meeting Leo and Gertrude Stein and being exposed to the work of Cézanne, Lautrec, Picasso, and Matisse, Maurer was converted

to modern painting. He exhibited his new work at the revolutionary Salon d’Automne in 1905, displaying canvases that experimented with bold colors and simplified forms. Indeed, Maurer was one of the first American painters to take a significant interest in fauvist and cubist painting. He was forced to hastily return to America in 1914 due to the outbreak of World War I, unfortunately leaving behind a studio full of work, which appears to have been lost. Back in the States, Maurer’s work became increasingly abstract, always remaining committed to modernism. $40,000-60,000

394 Jamini Roy (Indian, 1887-1972) Wedding Procession Signed indistinctly l.r. Tempera on canvas, 22 x 35 1/2 in. (55.8 x 90.1 cm), framed. Condition: Minor abrasions, craquelure, surface grime. N.B. Jamini Roy, born in 1887 and from a village in Bankura, district of Bengal, trained at the prestigious Calcutta Government School of Art with the modern Indian artist Abanindranath Tagore. There, Roy became well versed in Western art from Old Masters to Impressionism.

Upon leaving school, however, Roy realized that he wanted to draw inspiration form his own culture and he looked to the native 19th century Kalighat painting tradition. His subject matter, therefore, included the Ramayana (a Sanskrit epic poem), Christ, and portraits of contemporary figures such as Mahatma Gandhi. He also restricted his palette to seven colors: Indian red, yellow ochre, cadmium green, vermillion, gray, blue, and white, all mineral, earthy tones. Roy’s turn to Indian folk art, together with his training in modern art, resulted in distinctive visual style where naively rendered expressive subjects often float in a flattened two-dimensional plane. The popularity of Roy’s paintings during the 1930s and 40s show the passage of modern Indian art from its earlier academic tastes to new nativist predilections. $10,000-15,000

Conditions of Sale 1. Some of the lots in this sale are offered subject to a reserve. The reserve is a confidential minimum price agreed upon by the consignor and Skinner, Inc. below which the lot will not be sold. In most cases, the reserve will be set below the estimated range, but in no case will it exceed the estimates listed. A representative of Skinner, Inc. will execute such reserves by bidding for the consignor. In any event and whether or not a lot is subject to a reserve, the auctioneer may reject any bid or raise not commensurate with the value of such lot. 2. All property is sold “as is, and neither the auctioneer nor any consignor makes any warranties or representation of any kind or nature with respect to the property, and in no event shall they be responsible for the correctness, nor deemed to have made any representation or warranty, of description, genuineness, authorship, attribution, provenance, period, culture, source, origin, or condition of the property and no statement made at the sale, or in the bill of sale, or invoice or elsewhere shall be deemed such a warranty of representation or an assumption of liability. 3. Except as provided in paragraph 1 above, the highest bidder as determined by the auctioneer shall be the purchaser. In the case of a disputed bid, the auctioneer shall have sole discretion in determining the purchaser and may also, at his or her election, withdraw the lot or reoffer the lot for sale. The auctioneer shall have sole discretion to refuse any bid, or refuse to acknowledge any bidder. Any bidder that plans on spending in excess of $100,000 should make arrangements with the accounting department at least five (5) days in advance of the sale, as a deposit may be required to participate. 4. All merchandise purchased must be paid for and removed from the premises the day of the auction. Skinner Inc. may impose, and the purchaser agrees to pay, a monthly interest charge of 1.5% of the purchase price of any lot or item lot not paid for within thirty-five (35) days of the date of sale. Skinner, Inc. shall have no liability for any damage or loss to property left on its premises for more than three (3) days from the date of sale. Shipping is the responsibility of the purchaser. Upon request, our staff will provide the list of shippers who deliver to destinations within the United States and overseas. Some property that is sold at auction can be subject to laws governing export from the U.S., such as items that include material from some endangered species. Import restrictions from foreign countries are subject to these same governing laws. Granting of licensing for import or export of goods from local authorities is the sole responsibility of the buyer. Denial or delay of licensing will not constitute cancellation or delay in payment for the total purchase price of these lots. 9. Sales in Massachusetts, Florida, and New York are subject to the respective current sales taxes. Dealers, museums, and other qualifying parties may be exempt from sales tax upon submission of proper documentation. 10. Skinner, Inc. and its consignors make no warranty or representation, express or implied, that the purchaser will acquire any copyright or reproduction rights to any lot sold. Skinner, Inc. expressly reserves the right to reproduce any image of the lots sold in this catalog. The copyright in all images, illustrations and written material produced by or for Skinner, Inc. relating to a lot, including the contents of this catalog, is, and shall remain at all times, the property of Skinner, Inc. and shall not be used by the purchaser, nor by anyone else, without our prior written consent. 13. The buyer/bidder agrees that any suit for the enforcement of this agreement may be brought, and any action against Skinner in connection with the transactions contemplated by this agreement shall be brought, in the courts of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts or any federal court sitting therein. The bidder/buyer consents to the exclusive jurisdiction of such courts and waives objections that it may now or hereafter have to the venue of any such suit. Revised January 21, 2015
