Provenance

The Collection of Dr. James Woodward Wallace Dr. Wallace, called “Doc” by his many friends, was a sixth-generation doctor. Awarded a freshman scholarship to Harvard College, he completed his undergraduate studies in two years and earned his medical degrees from both Dartmouth and Harvard. After completion of his radiology residency, he practiced medicine for over 30 years at the Massachusetts General Hospital. Doc was an avid car enthusiast, angler, sailor, hunter, and marksman, with a true passion for fowling. He was a world traveler, wine and spirits connoisseur, and appreciator of fine food and great conversation. Doc loved and collected early sporting guns. He amassed many fine 19th-century rook rifles made by the great sporting arms makers Holland & Holland, John Dickson & Son, and Westley Richards & Sons, among others. He collected shotguns as well, and deeply appreciated their artistic beauty and form. His collection contains fine examples from prominent English gunmakers and well-respected American gunmakers alike. Twenty-eight L.C. Smith shotguns in grades ranging from Field to Crown are represented in the collection. He was particularly fond of the four bespoke shotguns he commissioned from the eminent Edinburgh gunmaker David McKay Brown. Working with nine specialized craftsmen, each McKay Brown piece took two years to complete and was built to Doc’s personal specifications, including the quality of the wood chosen for the stocks, the fine engraving, and custom accessories, cases, and tools. These four custom shotguns are several of the many highlights in the Wallace Collection. Doc was also an avid pistol collector and shooter. His collection of early 20th century Colt and Smith & Wesson revolvers was clearly assembled with an eye towards quality. He was captain of the Harvard University Pistol Team as an undergraduate and he competed in the Greater Boston Pistol League for more than twenty years. The Wallace Collection was a functional one. Doc regularly used his many guns in numerous shooting expeditions that took him to James Bay, Canada, Argentina, Texas, South Dakota, Maryland’s eastern shore, all over Massachusetts, and to numerous private ranches across the United States. One of his gun dealers remembers, “Doc would spend a lot buying firearms but that’s not why you’d want to hang out with him. He was an interesting guy; you could sit in an easy chair with a scotch and talk with him for hours on end. He would tell stories that sounded like tall tales and then they would all turn out to be true! He would say that his dad fished with Hemingway and you wouldn’t believe it until he put a copy of Old Man and the Sea in your hands that was actually signed by Hemingway with a note from Hemingway to his father! Doc would talk about cooking meals with his wife, Linda, and Julia Child, who lived down the road in Cambridge, he would have deer camp stories and talk about adventures with his dogs. Doc was a Brittany nut. He always had Brittanys and was really attached to his dogs.” Who better to sum up Doc than his two sons, Jamey and Josh. James W.H. Wallace remembers “Jim was an ardent fan of things old and that certainly included guns. He adored side by side shotguns and gave me my first one when I was an early teen. We used to go skeet shooting with the side by sides; the other fellows would make comments about our antiquated shotguns and he would just smile, knowing that he had the ‘real deal’: a field gun meant for birds and that skeet shooting was just for fun. He would also tell me how to reload efficiently so that I could get at least four shots off when the birds flew over us; i.e. no need for a pump shotgun. This could be interpreted as ‘snooty,’ but he was really proud of the craftsmanship of the older guns. He was willing to do something differently in order to connect with his favorite sports, whether gunning, fishing, sailing, or motorcar racing.” Joshua A.B. Wallace states: “Dr. Wallace had what’s known in Cambridge circles as ‘Shady Hill disease,’ named after his esteemed elementary school on Coolidge Hill, the symptoms of which include an overabundance of interests, curiosities, and pursuits—all doggedly mastered to perfection.” And “Dad was a 50s kind of guy...1850s.” Skinner is proud to present the Dr. James Woodward Wallace Collection of Fine Sporting Arms.

Shipping is the responsibility of the purchaser. Upon request, our staff will provide the list of shippers who deliver to destinations within the United States and overseas. Some property that is sold at auction can be subject to laws governing export from the U.S., such as items that include material from some endangered species. Import restrictions from foreign countries are subject to these same governing laws. Granting of licensing for import or export of goods from local authorities is the sole responsibility of the buyer. The buyer/bidder agrees that any suit for the enforcement of this agreement may be brought, and any action against Skinner in connection with the transactions contemplated by this agreement shall be brought, in the courts of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts or any federal court sitting therein. The bidder/buyer consents to the exclusive jurisdiction of such courts and waives objections that it may now or hereafter have to the venue of any such suit. Revised January 21, 2015
