The frolicking ram painted in ecstatic mid-leap through the Pauillac vineyards of Chateau Mouton Rothschild on the iconic 1982 label by John Huston captures the essence of what fine wine enthusiasts seek to tap into—the unfettered joy of uncorking a beautiful bottle of wine and sharing it with others. Many of the collections in this auction, the Weston Collection, the Island Cellar, and the Collection of Richard Elia particularly, were carefully amassed by collectors for whom this act was essential— wine was a fundamental part of the social tapestry of their lives, knitting friends and family closer together. At the founding of the Fine Wines department here at Skinner almost exactly a decade ago in 2007, Richard Elia was one of the first in the Boston wine world to welcome me. He was a dapper, astute, kind, tweedy, and devilishly funny gentleman, who on top of his illustrious academic career as a (much beloved) professor of English at Salem State, gave freely of his time and knowledge of wine. With his wife Harley, he founded The Quarterly Review of Wine, which ran in print for almost 35 years before going onlineonly, where it keeps a strong presence today. Some people have a knack for joy and celebration and Richard pulled others into that happy vortex, often traveling with great wines and Champagne at the ready. The quotes scattered across the pages of this catalog come from the white index cards Richard kept in his jacket pocket, doling out the words when someone needed of a little bit of philosophy to take them out of themselves for a moment. A favorite quote of Richard’s as told once to a writer: “There’s too much humbug about wine. Open it and drink. That was the advice Phillipe de Rothschild gave me when I interviewed him years ago. It’s still true.” For Richard Elia and the other collectors whose cellars unfold over the following pages, an inextricable strand of the collecting helix of passion and dedication was their generosity. My advice? Bid, pour, and share!

8 Chateau Lynch Bages 2000 Pauillac, 5eme Cru Classe “Beginning to open magnificently, the still dense purple-colored 2000 reveals a blossoming bouquet of blackberries, cassis, graphite and pen ink. Full-bodied with velvety tannins that have resolved themselves beautifully over the last eleven years, this wine is still an adolescent, but it exhibits admirable purity, texture, mouthfeel and power combined with elegance. One of the all-time great examples of Lynch Bages, the 2000 is just beginning to drink well yet promises to last for another 20-25+ years.” R. Parker for TWA, 97 pts. 08/11 12 bottles (owc) $1,800-2,400 9 Chateau Talbot 2000 St. Julien, 4eme Cru Classe 12 bottles (owc) $750-1,000 10 Chateau Gloria 1995 St. Julien u: all into neck 12 bottles (owc) $350-475 11 Chateau Le Petit Cheval 2000 St. Emilion 12 bottles (owc) $1,100-1,300

14 Chateau Haut Brion 2003 Pessac Leognan, 1er Cru Classe R. Parker for TWA, 95 pts. 08/14 3 magnums $1,700-2,100 15 Chateau Lafite Rothschild 2002 Pauillac, 1er Cru Classe 6 bottles $2,700-3,250 16 Chateau Lafite Rothschild 2002 Pauillac, 1er Cru Classe 6 magnums (owc) $4,800-6,600 17 Chateau Lafite Rothschild 2003 Pauillac, 1er Cru Classe “The 2003 Lafite Rothschild comes as close to perfection as any of the great Lafites made over the past three decades (1982, 1986, 1996, 2000, 2005, 2008, 2009 and 2010). This sensational effort came in at 12.7% natural alcohol, it is made in the style of one of this estate’s great classics, the 1959. Composed of 86% Cabernet Sauvignon, 9% Merlot and the rest Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, it exhibits a dense ruby/ purple color to the rim along with a luxurious bouquet of cedarwood, lead pencil shaving, white chocolate, cocoa and cassis. Fat, rich, opulent and full-bodied with low acidity and stunning seductiveness and complexity, this noble wine possesses a bountiful, generous, heady style. It is just coming into its plateau of maturity where it should hold for 20-25 years. This is one of the candidates for the wine of the vintage—make no mistake about that.” R. Parker for TWA, 100 pts. 08/14 12 bottles (banded owc) $7,200-9,600 18 Chateau Lafite Rothschild 2008 Pauillac, 1er Cru Classe R. 27 Chateau Cos d’Estournel 2005 St. Estephe, 2eme Cru Classe “The 2005 Cos d’Estournel is another great success from this property, which is owned by Michel Reybier. A superstar of St.-Estèphe in this vintage, this wine has a dense ruby/purple color, beautiful, sweet cassis and blackcurrant fruit, some floral notes, spice and a touch of oak in a full-bodied, layered, impressive multidimensional style. The tannins are surprisingly sweet and well-integrated, as is the acidity, alcohol and wood. This is a beauty and certainly the top wine of St.-Estèphe. Drink it over the next 25+ years.” R. Parker for TWA, 06/15 4 bottles $500-700 28 Chateau Cos d’Estournel 2006 St. Estephe, 2eme Cru Classe 2 bottles $125-175 29 Chateau Gruaud Larose 2009 St. Julien, 2eme Cru Classe R. 41 Chateau Haut Bailly 2009 Pessac Leognan “I have had this wine now four separate times since I wrote my official review after bottling of the 2009s. It goes from strength to strength, and it is not surprising that it is now one of the perfect wines of this great, great vintage – the finest vintage of Bordeaux that I have tasted in 37 years covering that epicenter for world-class quality in wine. Much of it is attributable to winemaker Véronique Sanders and her boss, Robert Wilmers. Their incredibly draconian selection process and their enormous investments in both the viticulture and the estate as well as the winemaking facility have paid off brilliantly over the last decade. The 2009, which has an opaque ruby/purple color, an extraordinary nose of high-quality unsmoked cigar tobacco, graphite, blackcurrants and spice, hits the palate with a medium to fullbodied, saturated and rich mouthfeel, but an elegant and ethereal quality that is difficult to articulate. It is rich, complex and tastes as if it were the vinous equivalent of a remarkable haute couture creation from the late Coco Chanel. It is full-bodied yet elegant, powerful yet delicate, and remarkably velvety-textured, sumptuous and loaded with upside potential. It can be approached now, as most 2009s tend to be, given their richness of fruit, low acidity and extraordinary concentration, but the great complexity that will emerge from this fabulous terroir is at least a decade away, and this wine is set for 50 or more years of longevity. Kudos to Haut-Bailly!” R. Parker for TWA, 100 pts. 05/15 2 magnums $450-600 42 Chateau La Mission Haut Brion 2000 Pessac Leognan “One of the wines of the vintage, the 2000 has barely budged in its evolution since it was bottled and released in 2002. After ten years in bottle, it still reveals a dense opaque purple color along with a potentially sensational bouquet of blueberries, black currants, graphite, asphalt and background oak. Extremely powerful, full-bodied and superbly concentrated with good acidity and high but round tannins, this massive La MissionHaut-Brion should take its place among this estate’s most hallowed vintages when it hits full maturity in another one to two decades. I was surprised by just how youthful this wine tasted at age 12. If tasted blind, I would have guessed it to be around 4 to 5 years old. Anticipated maturity: 2020-2050.” R. Parker for TWA, 100 pts. 08/12 3 bottles $1,200-1,500

43 Chateau Smith Haut Lafitte 2009 Pessac Leognan “The finest wine ever made by proprietors Daniel and Florence Cathiard, the 2009 SmithHaut-Lafitte exhibits an opaque blue/purple color in addition to a glorious nose of acacia flowers, licorice, charcoal, blueberries, black raspberries, lead pencil shavings and incense. This massive, extraordinarily rich, unctuously textured wine may be the most concentrated effort produced to date, although the 2000, 2005 and 2010 are nearly as prodigious. A gorgeous expression of Pessac-Leognan with sweet tannin, emerging charm and delicacy, and considerable power, depth, richness and authority, it should age effortlessly for 30-40+ years. Bravo!” R. Parker for TWA, 100 pts. 12/11 2 magnums $600-800 44 Chateau Petrus 1982 Pomerol, Cru Exceptionnel u: bottom neck, capsule oxidation and nicking to capsule, glue striping, nicking, and heavy damp staining to label 1 bottle $2,500-3,500

Parker for TWA, 99 pts. 06/12 6 bottles (owc) $900-1,200
49 Phelps Insignia 1994 Napa “The 1994 boasts an inky/purple color along with a glorious nose of black raspberries, blackberries and black currants that is still somewhat primary despite nearly 18 years in bottle. The Phelps team kept this cuvee in 100% new French oak for 28 months. Its magnificent structure, intensity and purity of fruit, ripeness, balance combined with authoritative power and the magnetic appeal of this full-bodied, Bordeaux-styled wine are extraordinary. This amazing effort is just coming into its best years, and should drink well for at least another 15-20 years.” R. Parker for TWA, 98 pts. 11/13 1 double magnum $550-750
47 Chateau Montelena Estate 2009 Napa 6 bottles (owc) $425-600 48 Opus One 2002 Napa 6 bottles (owc) $1,200-1,800

It’s always a pleasure to offer a sampling from this discerning collector with an eye for the classics as well as the heavyweight Californian producers, starting off with the stunning lot of ‘A Decade of Haut Brion.’ Removed from a temperature-controlled environment. 50 A Decade of Chateau Haut Brion 19982009 Pessac Leognan, 1er Cru Classe 12 bottles $3,500-5,000 51 Chateau Latour 1961 Pauillac, 1er Grand Cru Classe “Port-like, with an unctuous texture, and a dark garnet color with considerable amber at the edge, the 1961 Latour possesses a viscosity and thickness. One of the three bottles served at the Chateau’s tasting revealed a surprisingly aggressive, minty, herbaceous nose, but the other two bottles were liquid perfection, exhibiting fragrant, cedary, truffle, leather, mineral, and sweet, jammy aromatics, full-bodied, voluptuous textures, exquisite purity and concentration, and a layered, highly-nuanced finish that represents the essence of compellingly great wine. The 1961 has been fully mature for over 15 years, but it seems to get richer, holding onto its succulence and fat, and developing more aromatic nuances without losing any sweetness or concentration. An extraordinary wine, it is unquestionably one of the Bordeaux legends of the century! Anticipated maturity: now-2025.” R. Parker for TWA, 100 pts. 06/00 1 bottle $2,200-3,250 52 Chateau Latour 2003 Pauillac, 1er Grand Cru Classe R. Parker for TWA, 100 pts. 08/14 6 bottles (owc) $3,500-4,800
53 Chateau Ausone 2010 St. Emilion, Premier Grand Cru Classe (A) R. Parker for TWA, 98+ pts. 02/13 5 bottles $3,500-4,250 54 Domaine de la Romanee Conti Richebourg 2006 Cote de Nuits Burghound, 95 pts. 04/17 1 bottle $1,200-1,500
55 Domaine Ponsot Clos de la Roche Vieilles Vignes 2005 Cote de Nuits “All the superb and dramatic complexity that this displayed from barrel has made it into bottle as an extremely ripe and fantastically broad nose soars from the glass, merging seamlessly into dense, pure rich and powerful flavors that are opulent, sweet and dripping with so much extract and sap that the combination stains and saturates the palate on the hugely proportioned yet impeccably balanced finish that is so long that it doesn’t seem possible. Given how many reference standard vintages Domaine Ponsot has produced of the Clos de la Roche over the years, it would be presumptuous to anoint this as the best ever but if it isn’t, it will certainly take its rightful place among the very greatest. In sum, a ‘wow’ wine that makes you shake your head in sheer amazement. However be aware that this is a buy and forget wine as it will require at least 15 years to shed its considerable tannins and it will see 50 years without difficulty.” Burghound, 99 pts. 01/08 1 bottle $700-900 56 Guigal La Turque 1985 Northern Rhone R. 85 Chateau Petrus 1964 Pomerol u: top shoulder, light corrosion and oxidation to capsule, nick to label “A mammoth Petrus of stupendous extraction and power, this wine seems to be aging at a glacier pace. I suppose the 1975 is somewhat similar in style, with high levels of tannin and equally impressive levels of richness. This wine has a dark, murky garnet color with some orange and rust at the edge. The spectacular aromatics soar from the glass, offering up roasted herbs, espresso coffee, mocha, caramel, and plenty of jammy red and black fruits. A huge, viscous, spectacularly concentrated wine that is almost over the top in a style that even wine administrator Christian Moueix would probably find too big and intense for his more delicately styled taste. Nevertheless, lucky owners of this Petrus have decades of thrills still ahead of them. This is spectacular stuff! Anticipated maturity: Now2030. Last tasted, 11/02. R. Its spectacular nose of sweet black fruits, licorice, grilled meats, and smoky new oak is followed by a wine with immense richness, stunning opulence, a multidimensional personality, and a spectacularly long, well-delineated finish. Approachable now, it promises to drink well and even improve for another 15-20 years. These are the finest Barolos I have tasted from Scavino.” R. Parker for TWA, 96 pts. 04/94 3 bottles $300-425

“...Love is being intoxicated with Champagne.” —Dr. Samuel Johnson
A line-up of fantastic vintages of Bordeaux, Burgundy, and Rhone continue the theme of France’s finest. This cellar of a New England gentleman has one stunner after another—carefully sourced, carefully stored. Removed by Skinner staff from custom-built climate-controlled conditions. Part two of this collection is being offered in our online auction October 25th–November 3rd. 112 Roederer Cristal Brut 1990 Reims u: above foil “The Louis Roederer 1990 Cristal is awesome! A classic of power and finesse, richness and delicacy, it may be the greatest Cristal I have ever tasted!” R. It has an exquisite bouquet that is now fully mature, with a mixture of red and black fruit, violets, pastilles and hints of cold stone. It blossoms in the glass, gaining intensity all the time. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin, a more robust Margaux as you would expect given the vintage, clearly with firm backbone, more straight-laced than the 1985 or 1989. Yet there is wonderful delineation and focus here. If you seek strictness and classicism in a wine, then this is the place to come, plus there is superb mineralité and tension on the ferrous finish. Perhaps a little overlooked in recent years, the 1986 Margaux comes highly recommended for those who love the property. This is a wine finally coming of age.” N. The wine still has mammoth structure, tremendous reserves of fruit and concentration, and a finish that lasts close to a minute. The wine is massive, very impressively constituted, with still some mouth-searing tannin to shed. Decanting of one to two hours in advance seems to soften it a bit, but this is a wine that seems to be almost immortal in terms of its longevity. It is a great Medoc classic, and certainly one of the most magnificent Gruaud-Larose ever made. Anticipated maturity: 2006-2035.” R. This is an inky/purple, beefy, broad, super-rich Pauillac revealing classic creme de cassis notes intermixed with hints of spring flowers and crushed rocks. Full-bodied with sweet tannin, shocking concentration, and layers of fruit, this irresistible 1982 is still an adolescent in terms of its evolution. Anticipated maturity: now-2035.” R. This bottle represented one of the best that I have encountered. Iridescent in color, the bouquet soars from the glass, a pyrotechnic display of quince, Clementine, honey and a touch of aszu, lending it a slight Tokaji-like personality. It is beautifully defined and intense. The palate is pure and detailed with a killer line of acidity, vibrant honeyed fruit and a mellifluous finish that is now fully expressive. It vies with the imperious 1971 as the greatest Yquem of that era. This is simply magnificent.” N. The Collection of Richard Elia is being offered in remembrance of a man who embodied the true nature of the passionate collector; his thirst for the subject was intoxicating to those around him. No words could better describe Richard’s love for wine than those from his nephew: “The bottles were really more than wine; as a collection, it embodies Richard’s genuine love of people. Each bottle represents a friendship, a milestone, a conversation, cause for celebration, remembrance, gift and sometimes even atonement. Richard’s friends and family would seek him out for each of these reasons and he would generously give his best bottles in support of their cause. As a collection it is nearly as complex as I think he may have been. I say this as he knew such a breadth of people—from aristocrats to laborers—never favoring one over the other and being universally loved by all. When I’d leave Dick’s house—he would bring me downstairs to his wine cellar—I think partly to prolong my departure and also to pick out wine for me to bring to someone—my mother, my aunt, uncle, cousins, friends, etc. He’d start the conversation on some point and pick a corresponding wine to demonstrate his mood, opinion or any other aspect of what we were discussing; keeping the person for whom he was subtly crafting a case in mind. Dick was kind. Witty to say the least—but never acerbic or cruel. He knew each person’s likes and dislikes and would often describe the wine—and the person for whom he was choosing them—in wine terminology. In my younger days, I’d receive those needing a little more time to mature and subtle hints of earth but as I grew older (and a little less rough around the edges), he’d give me something with an unexpectedly nice finish. Much later, I was always champagne.” The Quarterly Review of Wines magazine—under Richard’s direction— celebrated the 19th, 20th, and beginning of the 21st century’s greatest wines; reviewed by the foremost experts in the industry. This sampling of his collection (along with a portion offered in our online sale October 25th–November 3rd) are highlights of a collection that took years to amass. It is a culmination of love and respect for all who dedicate their lives to the vine and was generously shared with who were lucky enough to know Richard. One hopes he would appreciate that his wine will now be spread to the like-minded; added to other bottles lovingly collected, placed on tables surrounded by families, raised in a cheer by friends.

171 Dominus Estate 2010 Napa “Composed of 95% Cabernet Sauvignon and 5% Petit Verdot, the stunning, full-bodied 2010 Dominus boasts an exceptional perfume of hoisin sauce, licorice, underbrush, forest floor, plums, black currants and jammy cherries intertwined with hints of cedar, baking spices and oak. Full-bodied and voluptuously textured, the 2010 is on a slightly faster evolutionary track than the 2009 (somewhat of an anomaly for these two vintages). A big, thick, chewy, tremendously long, intense, well-balanced red, I would love to taste it alongside the 2000 Cheval Blanc. It should hit its prime in 3-4 years, and last for two decades. There are approximately 800 cases.” R. Parker for TWA, 96 pts. 12/03 5 bottles $350-500

214 Next of Kyn No. 1 2007 Central Coast “The 2007 Syrah Cumulus Vineyard is a meaty, earthy effort representing a hypothetical blend of a northern Rhone with the exuberant, unabashedly ripe, juicy fruit of California. Jus de viande, damp earth, black currant, and blackberry notes along with good minerality and an absence of oak are all present in this full-bodied Syrah. It still has some tannins to resolve, but it is a big, full-bodied, classic, promising debut effort from the Cumulus Vineyard. It should drink well for at least a decade.” R. 219 Next of Kyn No. 6 2012 Central Coast “A wine that flirts with perfection, the 2012 Cumulus Vineyard #6 is an interesting blend of 38% Syrah, 37% Grenache, 17.4% Petite Sirah and the rest Mourvedre that saw 33 months in 54% new French oak. There’s a tiny 191 cases made, and it’s one of the most singular, exotic wines I’ve tasted. Spice, cedar, chocolate, exotic flowers and an assortment of dark fruits all emerge from this full-bodied, layered blend that hits the palate with serious richness and depth. Yet, like all truly great wines, it’s light, ethereal and never, ever heavy. There’s big structure here as well, so forget bottles for 3-4 years and enjoy over the following 15+ years.” J. Dunnuck for TWA, 99 pts. 08/16 3 bottles 1 magnum (in one owc) $1,500-2,500
220 Next of Kyn No. 7 2013 Central Coast “The 2013 Cumulus Vineyard #7 is blended of 45% Syrah, 29% Grenache, 15% Petite Sirah, 5% Mourvèdre, 4.5% Touriga Nacional and 1.5% Rossanne, using 58% whole clusters. It sports a deep garnet-purple color with a sexy spiced plums, black cherry coulis and blackberry tart-laced nose accented by hints of tea, dried Provence herbs, mocha, spice box and eucalypt. The bold, powerful, outspoken palate delivers concentrated black fruits and savory layers framed by firm yet fine-grained, velvety tannins and bags of freshness, finishing with lingering baking spice and mineral notions. Full and fresh with plenty of spices and wonderful length.” L. Perrotti Brown for TWA, 97+ pts. 09/17 3 bottles 1 magnum (in one owc) $1,500-2,500

The Island Cellar: This New England gentleman’s passion for wine blossomed during time spent abroad in Europe and amongst friends and family in a small coastal town. Sourced primarily from a local retail store, as well as direct from chateaux, this collector amassed bottles from small cooperatives to Grand Crus. Part two of this collection is being offered in our online auction October 25th–November 3rd.

234 Chateau Mouton Rothschild 1982 Pauillac, 1er Cru Classe u: one into neck, one very top shoulder, staining to labels, abrasion and loss to one, light bin soil “This wine remains one of the legends of Bordeaux. It has thrown off the backward, youthful style that existed during its first 25 years of life, and over the last 4-5 years has developed such secondary nuances as cedar and spice box. The creme de cassis, underlying floral note, full-bodied power, extraordinary purity, multilayered texture, and finish of over a minute are a showcase for what this Chateau accomplished in 1982. The wine is still amazingly youthful, vibrant, and pure. It appears capable of remaining fruity and vibrant in 2082! Thank God it is beginning to budge, as I would like to drink most of my supply before I kick the bucket. This is a great, still youthful wine, and, on occasion, one does understand the hierarchy of Bordeaux chateaux when you see the complexity and brilliance of this first-growth. Anticipated maturity: 2015-2050+.” R. 250 Chateau Latour 1982 Pauillac, 1er Cru Classe u: into neck, slight nicking to capsule base, light bin soil “Always somewhat atypical (which I suspect will be the case with the more modern day 2003), the 1982 Latour has been the most opulent, flamboyant, and precocious of the northern Medocs, especially the St.-Juliens, Pauillacs, and St.-Estephes. It hasn’t changed much over the last 10-15 years, revealing sweet tannins as well as extraordinarily decadent, even extravagant levels of fruit, glycerin, and body. It is an amazing wine, and on several occasions, I have actually picked it as a right bank Pomerol because of the lushness and succulence of the cedary, blackberry, black currant fruit. This vintage has always tasted great, even in its youth, and revealed a precociousness that one does not associate with this Chateau. However, the 1982 is still evolving at a glacial pace. The concentration remains remarkable, and the wine is a full-bodied, exuberant, rich, classic Pauillac in its aromatic and flavor profiles. It’s just juiced up (similar to an athlete on steroids) and is all the better for it. This remarkable effort will last as long as the 1982 Mouton, but it has always been more approachable and decadently fruity. Drink it now, in 20 years, and in 50 years! Don’t miss it if you are a wine lover.” R. 269 Dugat Py Gevrey Chambertin 2011 Cote de Nuits 6 bottles $475-600 270 Thibault Liger Belair Richebourg 2011 Cote de Nuits “This is (also) brooding though (again) aggressive swirling liberates exceptionally fresh and intensely floral aromas that also feature notes of various red berries and a beautiful array of spice notes that include anise, hoisin, soy and sandalwood. There is extraordinary intensity to the mineral-driven, focused and powerful imposingly scaled flavors that are tightly wound around a core of ripe but very firm tannins before exploding in a mouth coating and palate staining finish. This is a classic Richebourg and presently very austere that will require at least 12 to 15 years to shed its considerable tannins.” Burghound, 94 pts. 01/14 2 bottles $550-1,100 271 Perrot Minot Morey St. Denis La Riotte Vieilles Vignes 2009 Cote de Nuits 6 bottles $475-650 272 Domaine de la Romanee Conti Grands Echezeaux 2011 Cote de Nuits “A brooding and still exceptionally primary nose with a wide variety of floral elements on the cassis, plum liqueur scents that display anise, clove and once again sandalwood hints. There is imposing power to the large-scaled but not massive flavors that possess fine mid-palate density as well as an abundance of palate soaking dry extract before culminating in an explosively long finish. I like the balance as well as the notable depth of material though it will require plenty of time for it to reveal its full potential.” Burghound, 94 pts. 01/14 1 bottle $750-1,100 273 Domaine de la Romanee Conti Romanee St. Vivant 2011 Cote de Nuits “This is certainly one of, if not the, most floral wine in the range in 2011 with the possible exception of the Richebourg. The extraordinarily elegant and airy nose is positively kaleidoscopic in its sheer breadth of spice elements that combine with the stunningly pure red and black raspberry fruit aromas that are liberally laced with rose petal nuances. The lacy, intense and beautifully precise middle weight flavors are harmonious and impeccably well-balanced on the fabulously long and silky finish where a touch of youthful asperity is present. This should be terrific in time.” Burghound, 94 pts. 01/14 1 bottle $900-1,200

Described as a “granite year” by Jean-Louis, this puppy has searing, liquid rock-like qualities to go with ample dark fruit, gunpowder and flint. Structured, firm and backward, yet with a rock-star mid-palate and finish, give it another 3-5 years and drink bottles through 2028.” J. Ullage (Level of Wine) Illustration and Interpretations For Bordeaux, Port, and other shouldered bottles n. bn. vts. ts. hs. ms. lms. s.
ullage is into neck bottom neck very top shoulder top shoulder; usual level for Bordeaux older than 15 yrs high shoulder; usual cork reduction, often found in Bordeaux over 20 yrs, low risk mid shoulder; variation likely as indicates cork deterioration low mid shoulder; some risks, reflected in estimates shoulder; risky, reflected in estimates into neck bottom neck very top shoulder top shoulder high shoulder mid shoulder low mid shoulder shoulder
Ullage of wines of vintages fifteen years and younger may be assumed to be of bottom neck or better unless otherwise noted. Similarly, regarding older vintages, lack of notation indicates acceptable and appropriate ullage, clear label and sound cork; potential bidders must be prepared for reasonable variations in ullage in all vintages older than 20 years. Bidders with specific condition questions should contact the Fine Wines department. Conditions generally not noted on group lots. Bordeaux wines are cataloged referencing the 1855 classification. Chateau Petrus cataloging reflects the practice of granting it 1er Cru Classe and other notable Pomerol Chateaux are designated Cru Classe. All Bordeaux wines may assume to be chateau bottled unless otherwise stated. It is standard practice for Skinner/Lower Falls Wine Co. to open all original wooden cases (owc) for visual inspection. The opening of banded cases will be determined on an individual basis. For Burgundy, German wines, and all other more gradually slope-shouldered bottles, the ullage measurement is taken in centimeters from cork base, e.g. 3cm, 5cm, 7cm. Bottle Sizes bottle (750 ml) magnum (2xbt) marie jeanne (3xbt) double magnum (4xbt)
jeroboam (4xbt); Burgundy, Champagne jeroboam (6xbt); Bordeaux imperiale (8xbt); Bordeaux methuselah (8xbt); Burgundy
demi bottle (demi) split (1/4 bottle) Champagne
Buyers’ Caution: Levels are as when cataloged; ullage may change due to cork deterioration; other bottle conditions may occur during storage and shipment. Risk of ullage variation and cork deterioration and/or failure is assumed by the buyer at time of sale and no sale cancellations, price negotiations, or bottle substitutions will be undertaken by either Skinner or Lower Falls Wine Co. Similarly, no substitutions will be made due to inaccurate descriptions. Flights of Lots: Are of the same type, vintage and bottle count and follow one after another numerically, though ullage and bottle conditions may vary. The auctioneer may exercise discretion to offer, in consecutive lot order and at that same price, the following lots in the flight to the first successful bidder of that flight. Subsequently, those lots not purchased will be offered anew and so on. Absentee bids placed on any lot in a flight will be applied to the next lot in the flight (if unsuccessful), until the flight concludes. Environmental Note: It has only been in the last 20-30 years that the wine industry has moved away from using lead capsules to cover the cork and neck of a bottle. When opening an older wine, if you do have a lead capsule, give consideration as to how you dispose of it.
