Skinner + Phillip Thomas, Inc.
Skinner is excited to have had the opportunity to collaborate with interior designer Phillip Thomas—an ideal platform to showcase Phillip’s talent for seamlessly mixing an eclectic combination of antique objects, furniture, and works of art, all inspired by the property in this auction. Phillip artfully shows how to incorporate antiques in today’s interiors. We hope you find inspiration in the items on the pages ahead—see pages 24, 26, 30, 32 & 69.
S: Describe your style of design. How did this Skinner experience showcase your approach to interiors? PT: I would be hard-pressed to describe the style of my designs. Interiors should be a reflection of the person that resides in them—the best reflection. To that end, my projects take me on varied journeys where I may create anything from a more formal, traditional interior to an über contemporary, minimalist interior. And for a great many of my clients, I create interiors that fall somewhere in between. What unites all my projects is a strong attention to detail and a passion for perfection. I grew up in a home filled with beautiful English and Continental antiques. I learned so much about design through my interaction with these pieces, and it is for that reason that antiques continue to have a very strong role in my interiors. Not only do I place them, but they inspire me in my creation of contemporary, custom commissions for my clients. Antiques tell a story. They capture a moment in history. They show the hand of the craftsman that made them. Within the right setting, antiques can be transformed into pieces that are not only functional but also works of art. When I walked into Skinner to prepare for this auction, I felt like a kid in a candy store. I love that feeling. While many were expecting me to be overwhelmed by the number of pieces, I immediately started to visualize how each of these pieces could easily translate into today’s interiors. In creating these vignettes for the auction, it was my hope to show you through my renderings that antiques have a place in so many of our homes—from those that are traditional to those that push the envelope. I hope that you too will be able to visualize some of these pieces in your home. —Phillip Alden Thomas
