N
orman Rockwell (1894-1978), one of the most popular American artists of the past century, has often been regarded as a simple illustrator and his work identified with the covers of the Saturday Evening Post. He is, instead, a total artist. An acute observer of human nature and talented storyteller, Rockwell captured America’s evolving society in small details and nuances, portraying scenes of the everyday life of ordinary people and presenting a personal and often idealised interpretation of the American identity. His images offered a reassuring visual haven in a period of epoch-making transformation that led to the birth of the modern American society. The art of Norman Rockwell entered the homes of millions of Americans for over fifty years, illustrating the Roaring Twenties, the Depression, World War II, and the 1950s and 1960s. His works mirror aspects of the life of average Americans with precise realism and often in a humorous light.
• The book is realised in collaboration with the Norman Rockwell Museum of Stockbridge (Massachusetts). • All the original works are drawn from the permanent collection of the Norman Rockwell Museum. Danilo Eccher see on page 10. Stephanie Haboush Plunkett is the Deputy Director and Chief Curator of the Norman Rockwell Museum in Stockbridge, Massachusetts.

orn in Dublin, Ireland, in 1945, Sean Scully has gained international prominence as one of the most admired contemporary abstract painters today. Fusing the traditions of European painting with the distinct character of American abstraction, Scully’s great achievement is the reinvigoration of abstract painting with the metaphorical, the philosophical and the sublime combined with the earthy tangibility of paint. Focussing on the works realised in the latest seven years, this volume is constructed on a dualism between two conflicting accounts. On the one hand, the light of architecture (Doric) and on the other that of natural landscape (Landline): the geometrical composition of the Doric series of works is justaposed to the overlapping of natural horizons of the Landlines. Elected a Royal Academician in 2013, Scully has been shortlisted for the Turner Prize twice, in 1989 and in 1993. He lives and works in New York, Barcelona, and Munich. His work is held in numerous public collections including The Metropolitan Museum of Art, MoMA, and Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York; The National Gallery of Art, the Corcoran Gallery of Art, and Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, Washington, DC; Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth, Fort Worth; and the Tate, London.
• Through more than 200 images, this volume presents the complete work of the artist, including his internationally renown masterpiece The Wall of Light. • It gathers essays by David Carrier, David Grosz, Danilo Eccher, Tanja-PirsicMarshall, Lilly Wei, Armin Zweite. Danilo Eccher see on page 10. 14

A new monograph dedicated to the great Latin American artist, gathering all his paintings made in the last thirty years
Publication November 2015
I’m a painter of the old guard. I love painting, brushes, colors and palettes, and the smell of turpentine. I do my works using my hands. Artists, today, don’t really know what they are missing. Fernando Botero Botero has gained international fame, capturing the whimsy of life by painting corpulent and sometimes comical figures. The dilation of his subjects gives the figures an abstract, unreal, and even grotesque dimension. Studies in beauty and terror, Botero’s monumental figures can be sensual, and many are filled with pain and sorrow. This monograph presents the paintings realised in the last thirty years and created using his own unique language, which is a distinguishing feature of his work and an extraordinary blend of Latin American tradition and European painting.
• The selection documents the artist’s career to date and a survey of Botero’s key works. Rudy Chiappini art critic and historian, has been director of the Modern Art Museum of Lugano (Switzerland) for over twenty years, curating exhibitions dedicated to Modigliani, Munch, Chagall, among the others.

long with a group of drawings from the 1940s, in which pendulous forms are delineated in black ink, the selection of works presented in this volume demonstrate the myriad ways in which Louise Bourgeois approached material, form, and scale. They also affirm the various readings of Bourgeois’s work, whether formal, psychological, biographical, or experiential. For Bourgeois, the sculptures’ suspension is an expression of the psyche; as she stated: “Horizontality is a desire to give up, to sleep. Verticality is an attempt to escape. Hanging and floating are states of ambivalence.” In psychology, ambivalence refers to conflicting but coexisting feelings for the same person, place, or event. The many dualities at play within Bourgeois’s oeuvre (organic/geometric; rigid/pliable; male/female) provide this condition with fertile ground.
• The publication is a means of approaching Bourgeois’s distinctive iconographic and visual explosions and adding to our knowledge of the artist herself. • The volume spans more than 45 years – from the organic Lair forms of the early 1960s and the Janus series of 1968, to the cloth figures of the 1990s, the hanging heads of the 2000s, and the torqued spirals of shining aluminum made in the last years of Bourgeois’s life. Robert Pincus-Witten is an art critic, curator, and art historian. He is currently Director of Exhibitions at C&M Arts, New York.

Paolo Scheggi The Humanistic Measurement of Space
S
cheggi’s dazzling work developed in postwar Milan, an effervescent and international artistic context, enriched by the crucial presence of Lucio Fontana, and of experimental artists from the new Italian generation: Piero Manzoni, Enrico Castellani, Agostino Bonalumi, Dadamaino, Gianni Colombo. With them, Scheggi’s work shares the desire to move beyond traditional painting into a new creative and perceptual dimension: objective, physical, and spatial. The volume brings together pivotal examples of Scheggi’s work on the spatial investigation of surface: from the early metal assemblages of his Lamiere to the mature complex constructions of his Intersuperfici and Strutture modulari.
• A selection of around thirty paintings, including some unpublished canvases from Italian private collections, reaffirms the role played by Scheggi in the development of modern art in Italy. • The book is the catalogue of the first solo exhibition of Paolo Scheggi in London, organised with the Associazione Paolo Scheggi. Francesca Pola is an historian and critic of contemporary art as well as an independent curator and art journalist. She is adjunct professor at the Università Cattolica in Milan and Brescia and at the Milanese main campus of the Chicago IES Institute for the International Education of Students.

his volume explores, from an historical perspective, the development and increasing interest towards an art created outside the boundaries of official culture. Through the works and thoughts of three protagonists of the Outsider art, Hans Prinzhorn (1886–1933), Jean Dubuffet (1901–1981), and Harald Szeemann (1933– 2005), the catalogue attempts to portray the evolution of the perception of oeuvres that had no contact with the mainstream art world. The curator Carine Fol proposes a dynamic approach based on the dialogue between art and its limits, where discriminations and oppositions are overtaken by a universal message of art that at the same time respects multiple identities. Carine Fol, art historian, has been artistic director of the CENTRALE for Contemporary Art in Brussels since 2012.

he volume offers the possibility to trace thirteen years in the evolution of Katrin Fridriks with a focus on her latest and most innovative works, paintings, and shows. Born in 1974 in Reykjavik (Iceland), Katrin Fridriks is an abstract conceptual painter, living and working in Luxembourg. She fuses the natural energies of her native Iceland with an explosive, however organic, abstract expressionism and Japanese calligraphy signs, filtered through installations and architectural compositions. Based on an endless exercise on matter and technique, Katrin Fridriks’s recent works include perspective studies of her black-andwhite series (Gene&Ethics and Stendhal Syndrome) and of the metallic series Riding Awareness. The progressive enlargement of her drippings producing unique zoom effects is like macro photography into her paintings. By creating these new perspectives, Katrin Fridriks’s work brings an innovative dimension to abstraction.
editorial coordination Paola Gribaudo; texts by N. Medovoy, T. Tweeten, V. Komar, A. Traubner, O. Salamatina, and J. Cauman Naum Medovoy’s career spans four decades. A self-taught artist, he was mostly a documentary filmmaker until he began printing stills from his films, applying oil sticks and black and white inks to their surfaces. Medovoy’s photodocumentary collage paintings are rooted in his childhood memories and previous work. It is this appeal of Medovoy’s work—which straddles the line between beauty and grotesqueness—that gives it its lasting influence and afterlife, that “grips” our throat; or, as George Stevens once declared in talking about film, that bounces off the page and into the viewer’s mind, like something alive and changing. The same thing can be said about Medovoy’s art; it lasts with you long after you’ve left it.

Sakti Burman. A Private Universe edited by Rosa Maria Falvo texts by Professor Brijinder Nath Goswamy and Rosa Maria Falvo This beautiful and definitive monograph showcases the enchanting work of Indian master painter Sakti Burman. Legends, family, and Indian gods meet and mingle in Sakti Burman’s private, kaleidoscopic universe. Burman is one of India’s pioneering painters, who was born in 1935 in Kolkata and grew up in what is now Bangladesh. This monograph is the definitive publication illustrating the evolution of the artist’s prolific paintings, drawings, and watercolours, contextualizing his lifelong exploration into alternative ways of seeing. Burman’s colourful figures hark back to a kind of ancient “lost paradise,” but also sustain a fresh and irrepressible faith in the beauty and sensibilities of Mother Nature alongside a hopeful human spirit.

his volume is a study of the life and work of Aurelie Nemours including the paintings, pastels, and collages that she produced over half a century. In 1952 she developed her own language consisting of simple geometric forms, some patches of color, and orthogonal lines that give her compositions their regular and well-ordered structure. Her oeuvre consists of sequences, periods, and series, which sometimes extended over several years, and followed on from one another or overlapped.
• The first catalogue raisonné of the artist’s oeuvre (paintings, pastels, and collages). • Aurelie Nemours showed her paintings in the most important museums in France and throughout Europe.
• Major retrospective at the Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris in 2004. • Many of her paintings rank among the masterpieces of geometric abstract art alongside those by Ad Reinhardt, John McLaughlin, and Agnes Martin. he first volume of the Catalogue Raisonné of the works of Mimmo Rotella (Catanzaro, 1918 – Milan, 2006) is part of a more extensive systematic cataloguing project of the artist’s body of work by Germano Celant. The publication is being developed in partnership with the Mimmo Rotella Institute – established by Inna and Aghnessa Rotella in 2012 and directed by Antonella Soldaini – and the Mimmo Rotella Foundation, headed by Rocco Gugliemo. A scientific analysis and assessment is being conducted on the works executed during 1944–1961 – that is, from the artist’s experimental research phase (first through figurative painting, then through geometric abstraction) to his development of the décollage and retro d’affiche techniques. Unfolding in chronological order, the Catalogue highlights the various stages of development of the artist’s language, enabling a broader interpretation of the works executed in the period. Rotella started making use of wall posters in Rome in the early 1950s, and this became his hallmark. Thus the artist developed two parallel techniques: with the recto he created décollages, which were originally closer to the informal style of Alberto Burri and Lucio Fontana’s research at that time; with the verso of the posters, covered in wall matter and marked by mold, scratches, and traces of lime and plaster, he created his retro d’affiche.
• Around 600 works arranged chronologically, each accompanied by detailed technical and critical information. Germano Celant, a renowned art historian, critic and theoretician, has served as the curator of hundreds of exhibitions worldwide and published more than one hundred books and catalogues. 23

onsidered one of the great masters of contemporary Japanese photography, Daido Moriyama is always on the road, a lone traveller whose blackand-white images recount visions and worlds hidden just beneath the surface of reality. This book shows for the first time over 250 colour photographs taken between the 1960s and the 1970s. A constant flow of images that is often frenetic or suddenly suspended, following the rhythm of an unfettered, restless life spent travelling the roads of the world. Daido Moriyama (born 1938) is one of the most important living photographers and photobook makers. His career began in Tokyo in the 1960s, where he formed part of the influential Provoke group, which published some of the most innovative avant-garde photography made in post-war Japan. In a career spanning over fifty years, Moriyama is best known for his wild, blurred, grainy style of black and white photography, capturing urban experience on the streets of Tokyo and New York. However, there are many sides to his practice and he also works with colour, polaroid, silkscreen and installation.
• Moriyama’s work can be found in the collections of many major museums. Filippo Maggia is currently researcher in the Photography Department of the Royal College of Art. Since 2010, he has taught photographic documentation at the Accademia di Belle Arti in Catania (Sicily).

I retraced the paths which photography’s two inventors Daguerre and Talbot followed en route to their invention. For almost 180 years, it is photography that has determined how mankind sees its own history and perceives the world. Our collective history has been stopped, saved, and repeatedly scrutinized to the point of banalization. History, one might say, is not truly history until photography has thoroughly trivialized it. The day when mankind will realize its deepseated desire to bring time to a stop is coming inexorably closer. Time exists only through the agency of human perception. Only when mankind vanishes from the earth can we truly claim to have halted time’s progress. It is not long now. Hiroshi Sugimoto Hiroshi Sugimoto was born in Tokyo in 1948, lives and works between New York and Tokyo. A multifaceted artist, developed his artistic practice through photography, often associated with sculptural objects, architecture and exhibition design experiments. Often addressed to the interrelationship between art, history, science and religion, his photographic research combines Eastern meditative ideas with elements of Western culture. In over thirty years of work, the artist has captivated audiences around the world with his impeccable black and white images.
• The volume includes some pictures from the series Lightning Fields. A special section is devoted to the Sugimoto monographs published from 1977 to the recent ones, Dioramas and On the beach, printed in 2014. Filippo Maggia see on page 28. 30

A
n overview of the photographic works by Sven Marquardt, one of Berlin’s most famous — and one of its unlikeliest symbols. Protagonist of the city’s counterculture, through his photographs Sven Marquardt pays homage to his hometown. Former “clandestine” photographer and now undisputed protagonist of the reunited German capital’s underground art scene and front-man at the Berghain, Berlin’s most famous club, with its ten-year history known worldwide for its uniqueness. Through Marquardt’s unmistakable style, poised between intimacy and voyeurism, a selection of more than sixty photographs tells the story of Berlin’s social and cultural evolution and transformations from the raging years of the Cold War to the hedonism of today. Sven Marquardt (East Berlin, 1962) lives and works in Berlin. He formed himself as camera operator at the DEFA (the studios of public property of the DDR) and through the collaboration with the photographer Rudolf Schäfer. He began his career in the early 80s, publishing the first pictures on the periodicals “Der Sonntag” and “Das Magazin”. In parallel with his work as fashion photographer, Marquardt began to document the underground scene of East Berlin. After the fall of the Wall, Marquardt curated the campaigns for Levi’s during the Berlin Fashion Week in 2011 and for Hugo Boss in 2014. His pictures were displayed in numerous solo and group exhibitions in Germany and abroad. Enrico Debandi is Artistic Director of Palazzo Saluzzo Paesana in Turin. Eugenio Viola is an art critic and independent curator.

A survey of emerging young photography in the third appointment with reGeneration
T
he project reGeneration, produced by Musée de l’Elysée, Lausanne, (Switzerland), is dedicated to discovering and representing emerging young photography. Since 2005 the original exhibition was successfully shown in 12 countries, 24 cities, 25 venues across North America, Europe, and Asia. Most of the authors represented in the first edition of the exhibition have already become recognised photography artists. Following the success of the previous two editions, reGeneration3 turns the spotlight on the next generation of potential stars. Through two hundred images, reGeneration3 showcases the inspiring creativity of 50 up-and-coming photographic artists from 20 countries worldwide. The variety of subjects and techniques reflects the astonishing diversity of worldwide talent that has newly emerged. Useful reference materials include biographical details of each of the eighty photographers included and updates on the winning photographers from the previous editions. The result is an inspiring and dynamic collection, featuring both documentary and fictive approaches, film and digital mediums, and spontaneous and highly conceptual work. It showcases young (most of them are not over 30 yet) practitioners focusing on major themes as diverse as the urban environment, globalization, issues of identity and memory, as well as their hybrid techniques, which allow them to obscure as never before the distinction between reality and fiction.

O
ver 300 works from the Bischofberger Collection celebrate the fascination and brilliance of glass art and document the excellence of Finnish and international design through masterpieces by leading 20th-century Finnish designers: Aino and Alvar Aalto, Arttu Brummer, Kaj Franck, Göran Hongell, Gunnel Nyman, Timo Sarpaneva, Oiva Toikka and Tapio Wirkkala. Very rare objects, often one-off pieces, which Christina and Bruno Bischofberger have passionately and discerningly collected over the last forty years. The unique nature of these objects highlights the original intentions of each artist or designer and makes this collection of Finnish glass one of the most important worldwide. Published on the occasion of the exhibition in Venice and edited by Kaisa Koivisto, chief curator at the Finnish Glass Museum in Riihimäki, Finland, and Pekka Korvenmaa, professor at the Aalto University School of Arts, Design and Architecture in Helsinki, the volume presents the greatest examples of a century-long glass production, with all its declinations and variations: shapes and objects that have rewritten the history of both Scandinavian and international design. Abundantly documenting the various historical periods, the works selected are laid out in an elegant itinerary that ranges from crystal items with the typical hues of the early 1930s up to the more colourful, at times even “psychedelic”, creations of the 1970s in a celebration of timeless designs of the very highest standard. Professor Pekka Korvenmaa teaches design and culture at the Aalto University School of Arts, Design and Architecture di Helsinki. Kaisa Koivisto is Chief curator at the Finnish Glass Museum of Riihimäki.

or several decades, the designer Franco Clivio has collected everyday objects that are usually considered mundane and unspectacular. Clasp knives, knick-knacks, multipurpose gadgets, tools, and new versions of old friends such as scissors, spectacles, and measuring instruments: this volume includes 900 objects classified by function and type, material and form. Often the work of anonymous designers, these objects pay tribute to the ingeniousness of artisans and technicians who have provided solutions to a whole range of problems. The common denominator of this magnificent array of objects is always the sophisticated quality of the design, which is concerned less with beauty of form than with an unusual aspect of function, material, or construction.
• A “cabinet of curiosities” that gives credit to those design pieces which, though perhaps considered insignificant, have made a big contribution to modifying and improving the quality of our lives. Franco Clivio is a designer and lecturer at the Schule für Gestaltung, the school of design in Zurich.

nique pieces, chassis no. 1, or strictly Italian prototypes, on which the greatest designers and coachbuilders from the past have experimented pioneering solutions: choices that foretell future fashion phenomena and stylistic canons. The Lopresto Collection is unlike all others: it comprises only Italian models, one-off specimens, prototypes, special editions, and models made in extremely limited numbers, often personalised to match the customer’s specific requests. This is why it is the most important collection in Italy and one of the most prestigious in the world. Frequently, they are masterpieces that have long been forgotten, but through skilled restoration Lopresto has salvaged their bygone splendour, because he, an architect by profession and collector by passion, is in fact an automobile archeologist in love with his vehicles.

The project for the Tel Aviv Museum of Art in an inspiring book for all those interested in contemporary architecture
F
or architecture, the Tel Aviv Museum of Art’s Paul and Herta Amir Building provides a new spatial and tectonic paradigm; for museology, it represents a new approach for resolving tensions between divergent cultural agendas. The Tel Aviv Museum of Art is an unusual synthesis of two opposing paradigms of the contemporary museum: the museum of neutral white boxes dedicated to aesthetic contemplation and the museum of architectural spectacle, a site of public excitation. A comprehensive compendium of drawings, photographs, and texts, this book assesses the building within several of the most important discursive contexts of architectural and aesthetic theory.

a Scala is “the world’s number one theatre, because it is the one that gives the maximum musical enjoyment”, wrote Stendhal on 10 November 1816. La Scala had opened in 1778 with the opera Europa riconosciuta by Antonio Salieri, but it had already won itself a prestige that it would subsequently maintain throughout its whole existence. Most of Italy’s greatest operatic artists, and many of the finest singers from other nations, too, have appeared at La Scala during the past 200 years. Today, the theatre is still recognised as one of the leading opera and ballet theatres in the world. Through six sections (The beginnings; The first half of the nineteenth-century; The second half of the nineteenth-century; The first half of the twentieth-century; The second half of the twentieth-century; La Scala in the new millennium) this volume tells the fascinating story of the building.
• A chronology of the major operas, composers and players from 1778 to today. • An invaluable guide for both amateur opera fans and aficionados. • A lavish book with impressive pairings of text and illustrations. an Fabre has created a monumental new cycle of his mosaics for the PinchukArtCentre in Kiev. This publication presents the two grand series— Tribute to Belgian Congo and Tribute to Hieronymus Bosch in Congo, where the artist again grapples artistically with his country’s colonial past. All works from both series impress by their large size, but above all by the use of millions upon millions of jewel beetle wing cases. Utilizing the various colour tones of this iridescent material, Jan Fabre takes us into an indeterminate zone, between Paradise and the Belgian Congo. The work is inspired by the enslavement of millions of Congolese and the atrocities committed against them as well as the greed of the colonialists, who stole as much as possible of the natural riches the country had to offer. Both volumes are presented by Eckhard Schneider, general director of the PinchukArtCentre and are introduced by a specialist on the subject, with a collection of texts by more than thirty international art professionals.
• The volume features 36 astonishing mosaics, 23 sculptures and 2 major triptychs, including 28 new works created especially for the exhibition in the PinchukArtCentre and published for the first time. • For more than thirty-five years, Jan Fabre (born Antwerp, 1958) has occupied a leading international position as a groundbreaking visual artist, theatre maker and author.

Maria Cristina Mundici and Bepi Ghiotti
A photographic book on the museum house of one of the most eccentric female artists of the 20th century
W
ith over a hundred photographs, this volume explores the rooms, objects and light of the apartment in which Carol Rama has been living and working for over seventy years, retracing the personal life and artistic career of the great painter. The book is intended to disclose a secret place, in which the artist has gathered countless mementoes over the years: ones from her family, donated by friends such as Man Ray, Carlo Mollino and Andy Warhol, or collected in memory of special situations or people. While apparently scattered, these objects have actually been arranged with great care.
Specifications size 91/2 x 11 in. (24 x 28 cm) 192 pages, 83 colour and 20 b/w illustrations hardcover ISBN 978-88-572-2380-3 £ 48.00, $ 80.00, Can. $ 80.00

Inside Carol Rama
• A photographic book on an extraordinary artist’s house. • The photographs of Carol Rama’s house had a considerable circulation, such as the Venice Biennale in 2003, when she was awarded the Leone d’Oro (Golden Lion) for lifetime achievement.

N
ja Mahdaoui is a visual artist who considers himself “an explorer of signs” and has been described as a “choreographer of letters”. His work inspired by Arabic calligraphy is remarkably innovative as the aesthetic dimension of letters brings forth a strong sense of the poetic. These works arrest us with their astounding ryhthm and rich abstract composition, actually devoid of any textual meaning. Famous for his meticulous use of ink on parchment, Mahdaoui stresses the visual impact of his works, which he refers to as “cal-

His works have been widely shown around the world in GCC, Asia, America, Africa and Europe. • Nja Mahdaoui is one of Tunisia’s leading artists and a notable contemporary artist in the Arab world. 55

The first book to focus on Chinese artists born in the 1980s, exploring the advent of a new generation on the international art scene. This visionary selection of twenty young artists is the work ofJérôme Sans, co-founder of the Palais de Tokyo in Paris and former director of the Ullens Center for Contemporary Art in Beijing, and Jean-Marc Decrop, a specialist in contemporary Chinese art with the French and European Chamber of Experts. Born in a country in the full swing of economic, social, and urban change, and benefiting from global access to information and new technologies, these Chinese artists have broken free from any artistic legacy to draw upon a transversal, worldwide culture.

Leonardo da Vinci 1452–1519. The Design of the World edited by Piero C. Marani and Maria Teresa Fiorio
Specifications size 91/2 x 12 in. (24 x 30 cm) 616 pages 440 colour illustrations hardcover ISBN 978-88-572-2473-2 £ 50.00, $ 75.00, Can. $ 75.00
A vast catalogue dedicated to Leonardo’s entire oeuvre on the occasion of the largest exhibition ever realised in Italy on the genius, symbol of Italian art and creativity
Exhibition organised by Skira Milan, Palazzo Reale 16 April – 19 July 2015 on the occasion of
E
dited by two leading international specialists with the assistance of a prestigious academic committee and published to coincide with the biggest Leonardo exhibition ever held in Italy (produced by Skira and Comune di Milano/Palazzo Reale), Leonardo da Vinci 1452–1519. The Design of the World illustrates the many talents of Leonardo – painter and draughtsman, scientist, musician and inventor – and his ability to combine the arts and sciences. The book and exhibition are truly unprecedented due to the authority of the curators, the academic precision combined with educational intent, the number of works on display including paintings, drawings and manuscripts, and the exceptional loans from private collections and the world’s most important museums and libraries, such as the Louvre, the National Gallery of Art in Washington, the Musei Vaticani, the Royal Collection at Windsor and the Pinacoteca Ambrosiana. The book features numerous masterpieces, including a large number of paintings, more than one hundred drawings and various extraordinary codices and incunabula on loan from some of the greatest collections in the world: major works such as the Dreyfus Madonna from the National Gallery of Art in Washington and three masterpieces from the Louvre – the Belle Ferronnière, the Annunciation and the St John the Baptist – as well as thirty wonderful sheets from the Codex Atlanticus and thirty drawings from the English Royal Collection. Pietro C. Marani, professor of modern art history at the Milan Polytechnic, was codirector of the restoration work for The Last Supper and co-author of the exhibition catalogues on Leonardo at the Louvre and the Metropolitan Museum in 2013. Maria Teresa Fiorio teaches museum studies at the Milan “Statale” University. 66

Bramantino The Renaissance in Lombardy edited by Mauro Natale
This veritable reference work on Bramantino emphasises his pivotal role in Northern Italy’s Renaissance
T
his volume by Mauro Natale devoted to Bartolomeo Suardi called Bramantino, one of the most emblematic personalities of the northern Italian Renaissance, covers the whole of the artist’s cultural and creative trajectory. It follows a logical chronological sequence, which is also novel compared to the proposals put forward by scholars to date. Beginning with his collaboration with the architect and painter Donato Bramante – from whom he took the surname by which he is still known today – it concludes with his last known works, including the Flight into Egypt in the Santuario della Madonna del Sasso at Orselina in Ticino. Alongside illustrations of Bramantino’s masterpieces there are works by artists who were Bramantino’s contemporaries, first and foremost Bernardo Zenale, and by those who were the heirs of his artistic legacy, such as Bernardino Luini and Gaudenzio Ferrari.

Leonardo and the artes mechanicae edited by Romano Nanni Specifications size 91/2 x 11 in. (24 x 28 cm) 320 pages, 253 colour and 65 b/w illustrations hardcover ISBN 978-88-7624-574-9 £ 50.00, $ 80.00, Can. $ 80.00
In Vinci, the town where Leonardo was born and where he drew early inspiration for his studies and paintings, the Leonardo Museum gathers the machines and models that document Leonardo’s interest in war, architecture, mechanics and flight. This beautifully illustrated volume discovers the multiple interests of Leonardo the technologist, the architect, the man of science and, more generally, the history of Renaissance techniques. The book sets out to grasp the historic significance of Leonardo’s work as a “mechanic”, reconstructing his involvement in certain dynamics – played out between the time of Piero della Francesca and the early Galilei – of the knowledge and practices of the mechanical arts.

onceived as a retrospective, this book illustrates Kenro Izu’s refined artistic research and the work that for over thirty years he has been carrying out, like a tireless pilgrim, in the world’s most evocative holy sites: from the Egyptian pyramids and the ancient stones of Stonehenge to the site of Angkor Wat in Cambodia, from Buddhist temples in India and Indonesia to the Syrian desert and Tibetan peaks. Fascinated by the sublime beauty of ancient remains, he returns to the styles and printing techniques of 19th-century photography as best able to capture the mystical atmosphere of the places examined. • Almost 100 Izu’s photographs of spiritual landmarks: Easter Island, Teotihuacan, Angkor Wat, Stonehenge, the monuments of the Chinese Silk Road, Palmyra, Mustang, Hampi, the caves of Ajanta, Borobudur, Pagan, and Lhasa. • Faithful reproductions of the finely crafted photographs prints realised by Kenro Izu himself.

Robert Mapplethorpe. The Nymph Photography Germano Celant
An overview on Mapplethorpe’s nudes, portraits, self-portraits, floral still lifes and other works compiled by the leading art critic
R
obert Mapplethorpe’s wide, provocative and powerful body of work has established him as one of the most important artists of the twentieth century. The American photographer is mostly known for images that simultaneously challenge and adhere to classical aesthetic standards: stylised compositions of male and female nudes, delicate flower still lifes and studio portraits of artists and celebrities, to list a few of his preferred genres. For the first time, this volume gathers the complete anthology of Celant’s writings on the artist: from the 1983 exhibition at Palazzo Fortuny, Venice, projected with the collaboration of the artist himself, to the posthumous writings published in the catalogues prepared on the occasion of the exhibitions at the Guggenheim Museum, New York and the Hermitage Museum, St. Petersburg since 1990.
Specifications size 91/2 x 11 in. (24 x 28 cm) 200 pages, 56 colour and 109 b/w illustrations hardcover ISBN 978-88-572-2244-8 £ 35.00, $ 55.00, Can. $ 55.00
• Through over 140 images and texts that appear both personal and scientific, the book is a tribute to Mapplethorpe’s contribution to the history of photography.

A
photographer of the so-called Düsseldorf School, Axel Hütte trained under Bernd Becher with Thomas Struth, Thomas Ruff, Candida Höfer and Andreas Gursky. This volume presents two series of photographs. The first illustrates the author’s journey from Germany to Italy, a sort of retracing of the nineteenth-century Grand Tour: from Alpine passes surrounded by snowy summits to Apennine peaks. The second explores Venice and the interiors of some of its best-known palazzi through colour and black-and-white photographs, offering an austere and intimate picture of the lagoon city. The two series combine to bring about a cultured and refined celebration of architecture, be it in the midst of nature or in the city; they share the silence and the distant echoes of the history of men and events.
Karen Knorr. India Song edited by Rosa Maria Falvo; texts by William Dalrymple and Christopher Pinney and an interview with the artist by Rosa Maria Falvo

O
ver an established career, Karen Knorr’s work has developed a critical and playful dialogue with documentary photography through the use of different visual and textual strategies. Her aim is to explore everyday subjects such as family, lifestyle, culture and animal life to subsequently stage them in very unusual contexts. She investigates issues of connoisseurship, heritage, and art through staged events in architectural interiors. Karen Knorr began the India Song series in 2008, after a life-changing trip through Rajasthan. These latest images, which draw inspiration from the Indian tradition of personifying animals in literature and art, create scenarios that are at once otherworldly and surreal. Karen Knorr’s imagery features two formal constants: the insertion by digital means of animals in architectural interiors and their significant pose. Each finished image is both a mystery and a fable, referencing the vast tradition of picturing animals in art along with the Western appreciation and appropriation of Eastern culture and forms.

Architecture
Bernard Khoury Local Heroes edited by Luca Molinari Local Heroes investigates the various events and personalities that shaped the context within which architect Bernard Khoury had to operate; particularly that of Beirut, as it emerged from the early post-war 1990s up to its present state of uncontrolled dissonance. In keeping with the architect’s approach, the book is brimming with contradictions and does not seek to portray his work in light of consensual definitions of context and territory; rather than an attempt to theorise the architect’s motivations and objectives, it reads like a sort of counter-manifesto.
Specifications size 63/4 x 91/2 in. (17 x 24 cm) 392 pages, 263 colour and 99 b/w illustrations hardcover ISBN 978-88-572-2295-0 £ 45.00, $ 75.00, Can. $ 75.00

A
n architect, designer, interior decorator and columnist for Domus magazine, Tomaso Buzzi (1900–1981) was—together with Gio Ponti— one of the most important trendsetters for Italian taste in the 1930s and 1940s. After the monographs devoted to Carlo Scarpa and Napoleone Martinuzzi, this volume further extends Le Stanze del Vetro, a series devoted to the history of the Venini glasshouse. A catalogue raisonné, the volume provides a complete overview of the refined oeuvre of Buzzi, who worked in close partnership with Venini & Co. in 1932 and 1933. In those years, the architect designed a series of vases with classical shapes, standing out as a creative designer thanks to his research on materials and shapes, extending as far as to encompass the field of lighting, where the architect devised some new applications of Murano glass.
• A large format volume including full-page photographs of the glasses, sketches and designs.
• A complete overview of Tomaso Buzzi’s work, rich of details and informations for collectors and antique dealers. Marino Barovier is a Venetian belonging to one of the most ancient families of Murano glassblowers, regarded as one of the leading experts on the craft.

LaFerrari: the last masterpiece realized by the worldwide famous Italian brand
W
hat lies behind the search for excellence in a sports car? This book reveals the work put into the production of the new supercar, LaFerrari: a car whose ambitions are evident in its very name. A voyage of discovery of the Italian passion, method and excellence that created an authentic masterpiece on four wheels. Comparisons with its predecessors, the first style drafts, the clay models, wind-tunnel research, studies on cockpit ergonomics, vehicle dynamics, the perfection of the gears and brakes – all is revealed here in an ebb and flow of images and drawings. Furthermore, the development of the HY-KERS technology, thanks to its contribution in Formula 1 races, allows an insight into one of the most advanced frontiers in the world of sports cars destined for the road. High-craftsmanship, human experiences and futuristic technologies combine in this fascinating story, a group work that achieves the greatest combination of innovation and aesthetic beauty.

Italian Glamour. The Essence of Italian Fashion From the Postwar Years to the Present Day The Enrico Quinto and Paolo Tinarelli Collection A celebratory tribute to Italian style through fashion and costume in the twentieth century Specifications size 93/4 x 11 in. T
he fashion archive of Enrico Quinto and Paolo Tinarelli has been painstakingly assembled over the last twenty years and traces the international evolution of costume from the mid-19th century to the present day. This quintessential volume on Italian Style narrates the development of fashion through around three hundred dresses, chronologically ordered and selected from an international collection of over six thousand pieces, enriched by commentary by historians, journalists and fashion designers, but also by photography, film and personal testimony: a concrete resource for historians of costume, students and passionates. Most of the displayed dresses were documented by photographers when they first appeared worn by famous actresses, models and jet set personalities of the time: from the Duchess of Windsor to Queen Paola of Belgium, from Princess Grace of Monaco to Ava Gardner, Marilyn Monroe, Sophia Loren, Audrey Hepburn, Veruschka, Marisa Berenson, Grace Jones amongst many others.

T
hree decades of fashion brought together in one Collection, worn as originally intended by the Collector herself, and developed over five years by established fashion and portrait photographer Frederic Aranda: this is Electric Fashion. But why is it electric? It is the story of how the Collector, Christine Suppes, blazed an indelible trail into online fashion editorial whilst developing a unique collection in the heart of Silicon Valley. Electric Fashion is essential viewing, punctuated with academic perspective, comprehensive technical references, and archival text from the collection’s accompanying website, fashionlines.com. This timeless tome boasts a double vantage point; on the one hand, each garment is photographed in a studio setting to enhance critical academic understanding, whilst on the other, worn by the collector herself to depict the garments as they were originally intended to be worn. The finished product is a 360 degree view of fashion, from historical, cultural, and practical standpoints.

Salvatore Ferragamo Equilibrium edited by Stefania Ricci and Sergio Risaliti
Standing, happily walking, almost flying, moving in equilibrium: Ferragamo’s philosophy in making shoes
W
e have been walking upright for almost six million years and soon learned how to offload our body’s weight on the arch of the foot. Salvatore Ferragamo dedicated all his life to the study of the foot’s anatomy, also researching into architecture and engineering, as we can understand by looking at his patents. Walking, dancing barefoot or en pointe, advancing along a wire in the manner of a tight-rope walker, climbing mountains, stepping and marching on orders, wandering about to find oneself: these are just some of the themes dealt with in Equilibrium, the new project by the Museo Salvatore Ferragamo. This volume is based on the comparison among magnificent, important and meaningful artworks: painting, sculpture, photography, video, cinema and printed editions. The geometric balancing of Kandinsky is displayed alongside the thread-like structures of Fausto Melotti; Dürer’s Fortuna with Giulio Paolini’s funambulist; and portraits of Nijinsky alongside those of Isadora Duncan, Martha Graham and Trisha Brown.

Gianfranco Ferré The White Shirt according to Me edited by Rita Airaghi, artistic director Luca Stoppini
Gianfranco Ferré’s creativity and artistic genius illustrated by the iconic garment of his sartorial style: the white shirt
A
homage to the work and talent of the “architectfashion designer” who since the early days of his career succeeded in establishing an ongoing dialogue between architecture and fashion, creating a new code with which these two difficult and complex worlds could perfectly combine. Ferré himself affirmed: “I believe that most part of my creative process is based on my background and training as an architect. For me fashion is poetry, intuition, imagery, but also a methodic and projectoriented discipline, based on the factthat a dress is the result of a programmed and acknowledged intervention on forms and shapes”. In a magical play of lightness and transparency, 27 shirts (selected from the most extraordinary shirts Ferré designed during his over 20 year long activity) testify to Ferré’s creative genius and to the technical and project quality he put into the construction of this garment, which Ferré himself considered “the” sign of his style.
