leading representative of the Russian avant-garde, Alexander Rodchenko (1891–1956) revolutionized the world of graphic art, design, and photography. The over 250 illustrations featured in this volume allow the reader to grasp the full force of this innovator and to appreciate the charisma he exerted on fellow artists and men of letters, directors and intellectuals who shared his path. Whether the photomontages he created for Vladimir Mayakovsky’s poem Pro Eto (About That), the covers designed for the magazine Novy LEF (New LEF) – a reference for the revolutionary intelligentsia – or cinema posters and book illustrations, Rodchenko’s works bear witness to his many collaborations and friendships, evoking not just the image of a brilliantly creative personality but a unique phase in twentieth-century history. The remarkable photographic portraits by the artist, his pictures of urban landscapes and architectures, as well as his photo-reportages in factories and building sites evoke both the faces and spirit of an age of great hopes and equally great contradictions. To this day, the style of Rodchenko the photographer, marked by unusual perspectives, sharp angles, and diagonals, stands as the purest witness not just to the talent of an artist but to his eagerness to modernize art and the world at large. • The Russian avant-garde of the 20th century is a unique phenomenon not only with respect to Soviet culture, but also in an international context. • Alexander Rodchenko was one of the main creative exponents during the extraordinary time of the Russian avant-garde movements.

The evolution of the close bond between the visual arts and opera starting from the nineteenth century up to the early twenty-first century
Publication November 2016
T
he intertwining of visual and musical arts at the beginning of the 20th century led to modernism, abstraction and in music, atonality. This meeting of the arts was never so intense as on the operatic stage. In her book Painting the Stage. Opera and Art, curator and art and music critic Denise Wendel-Poray first examines historic productions beginning with Schinkel’s iconic stage design for Mozart’s Magic Flute, before exploring those of the 20th century with Diaghilev and the Ballets Russes and the implication of avant-garde artists in opera up until World War II. Directly after the armistice of 1945, famous artists such as André Derain, Balthus, Dalí, André Masson, and Kokoschka reopened the theaters amidst ruins, thus ushering in a new era of optimism. The event of pop art, happenings, and experimental theatre with the collaboration of artists Robert Indiana, David Hockney, Robert Wilson brought on further developments in the realm of opera. Finally, interviews with world famous artists such as Anselm Kiefer, William Kentridge, Bill Viola, Robert Longo, Jonathan Meese, and Daniel Richter show how their contribution to the genre is making opera today more than ever a form of “total art” or “Gesamtkunstwerk” and a hotbed of contemporary creation. • Rich, informative, and scrupulously researched, this comprehensive publication covers 200 years of opera stage design. • Featuring over 250 illustrations, this publication has fantastic visual content.

uilding on several years of in-depth academic and field research, the book allows the reader a first-hand foray into this artistic world, with over 200 works represented. Works from the most important artists are represented, including visual artists Abdel Hadi El Gazzar, Kamel El Telmissany, Fouad Kamel, Ida Kar, Amy Nimr, Ramsès Younan as well as poets and writers such as Albert Cossery, Georges Henein, Edmond Jabès. • Exceptional artworks which are still little-known by the general public. • A rich archival documentation and essays by art historians, experts on the subject for a better understanding of the art movement and its context. • In 2017, the exhibition will travel to the Tate Liverpool, the K21 in Düsseldorf and the Centro Reina Sofía, Madrid.

book which recollects the history of a modern art movement in the Arab world, called “Hurufiyya.” Re-inventing calligraphy and focusing on the formal elements of the Arabic letter, it is one of the most significant art movements that took place in the Arab world beginning in the 14th century, and peaking again in mid-20th century. This movement fuses the traditional and the contemporary, the letter and the sign, in a way that the letter is perceived as an artistic form and does not require to be read or decrypted. Written by Dr. Charbel Dagher in 1991, this is the first time that these texts are published in English, and are accessible to a non-Arabic speaking audience. • The first book on the subject. • Among the artists: Ali Hassan, Ali Omar Ermes, Hassan Massoudy, Mohammed Mandi, Nja Mahdaoui, Omar El Nagdi, Rachid Koraichi, Samir Sayegh, Shakir Hassan, Yousef Ahmed. hat links exist between sounds and abstract images? What were the first audiovisual instruments? What was the influence of music on Kandinsky’s work? What are the most relevant audiovisual installations? What are the relationships between VJs and live cinema? And, what is synesthesia? Audiovisual Art answers these and many other questions concerning the relationship between art and music, spanning from Toulouse-Lautrec to Nam June Paik, from Händel to Xenakis, and from Fischinger to Ikeda. It is an in-depth study focused on both historical experience and contemporary research, illustrated by 150 color images. The association between images and music aroused the curiosity of a number of artists and thinkers of the past, it stimulated artistic creativity in the 20th century and continues to be a topic of great interest today. This book aims to take stock of the situation, now that abstract audiovisual art, having reached maturity, is enjoying a new season of renewed vitality. • The book depicts in a clear and effective language the stages and the protagonists of the technologic and multisensory revolution in art which gave form to a new and independent expressive form: visual music. Adriano Abbado began to work with digital images and sounds back in 1981. In 1986 he received a Fulbright scholarship to study at the MIT Media Laboratory. His most recent works have been shown in Barcelona, Copenhagen, Milan, New York, Paris, Rome, Shanghai, Strasbourg and Washington, DC.

Fifty years in the history of the celebrated leading company of Italian and international design
Publication October 2016
I
talian design and its resounding international success are the result of the fortunate encounter between contemporary design culture and the visions of entrepreneurs such as Piero Ambrogio Busnelli (1926–2014). Established in 1966 as a way to make the most of what Busnelli saw as the great potential of new materials for the production of furnishings– an innovative approach carried forward by his successors – B&B Italia has from the outset been the furniture industry that invests more than any other in research and experimentation on new technologies, collaborating with many of the leading international architects and designers: from Afra and Tobia Scarpa to Antonio Citterio, Mario Bellini to Gaetano Pesce, Zaha Hadid, Patricia Urquiola and Naoto Fukasawa. This book charts the company’s history through the products and places that have marked out its development, casting a spotlight on the way its corporate strategies have been intertwined with the poetics of form as explored by its designers. It is a story played out against the ups and downs of the global market, which have been rendered all the more complex and fascinating by the drive towards cultural and economic globalisation. This is a vital case study for architects, professionals, scholars, collectors and everyone with a passion for the culture of design. • The book covers fifty years of B&B Italia, “an industry for design.” • Its products have contributed to writing the history of Italian design. Stefano Casciani (designer, writer, curator and consultant) is one of the most influential design critics in the world. Deputy Editor of Domus until 2011, he is now Editor-in-chief of Disegno. la nuova cultura industriale.

ulvio Bianconi (Padua, 1915 – Milan, 1996), from the interwar period onwards, was associated with the glassworks of Paolo Venini with which he established a significant working relationship leading to the creation of an extraordinary series of highly colored Murano glass pieces that encapsulate the enthusiasm of the decade and characterize the taste of the period. The volume revisits this exciting experience of Bianconi’s and illustrates the entire production created for the celebrated Murano furnace. This consists of some five hundred models, including vases and bowls with original forms and exuberant but refined polychrome glass weaves (pezzati, scozzesi, a fasce) (patchwork, Scots, with bands etc.). As well as these, there are amusing animals but also a great number (c. 180) of very lively and ironic glass figurines, often freely inspired by characters of the Commedia dell’arte (Italian popular theatre), such as Harlequin and Pulcinella, and others by regional or period costumes, testimony to the extraordinary creativity of a versatile and prolific artist. • The first catalogue raisonné of artistic glass by Fulvio Bianconi. • The volume is the result of thorough research based mostly on unpublished material from the Venini historical archives. • A great name of Italian design deals with the potentials and limits of glass. • A must-have for collectors, scholars, and art dealers.

elling the story of Ayrton Senna is not easy. It means retracing an intense competitive career, looking into the vulnerable soul of a complex man, and reliving his tragic death, which came during the bloodiest weekend in the history of modern motor racing. It also means paying homage to a truly heroic figure, whose grace and appeal remain intact. In other words, we are talking about a journey into the collective memory, within which each racing fan cherishes particular moments, personal memories, emotions, and grief related to a figure who in some way continues to appear and to race in a highly colorful firmament. This brings us to Ercole Colombo. His photos, his passion for Formula 1, and his innate ability as a reporter, combined with the aesthetic touch of a great photographer. • A captivating story, enriched by the writings of Giorgio Terruzzi, who covers the most important moments in Ayrton Senna’s life: his legendary wins, his defeats, the loss of his friends, the great rivalry with other drivers, his emotions and family relationships, and finally the terrible accident where he lost his life. • Ayrton’s last night, full of thoughts, contradictions, and feelings. Giorgio Terruzzi, writer and journalist and great expert on Formula 1, has worked with many newspapers including Corriere della Sera. In 2015, his book Suite 200: L’ultima notte di Ayrton Senna (2014) won the Bancarella Sport prize.

eginning with the Milano. Ritratti di fabbriche cycle from the late 1970s, this book follows the evolution of Basilico’s artistic language – amidst documentary rigor and subjective interpretation – from his legendary pictures taken in France and in major ports across Europe in the 1980s to the 1991 series devoted to Beirut which had just left behind its long civil war, up to his final work on the renewal of the Porta Nuova district in Milan. The main core of works in this publication consists of the 50 portraits of cities which the artist took over the course of his career: Paris, Madrid, Berlin, Moscow, San Francisco, Istanbul, Rio de Janeiro, and Shanghai intermingle and dialogue through Basilico’s impassioned and contemplative gaze. He was able to interpret the passage of time, transformations in architecture, unexpected analogies, in an endless journey across the bodies of cities. • With over 150 photographs, this publication covers the main themes in the body of work of Gabriele Basilico (Milan, 1944–2013), and in particular his relationship with cities and urban landscapes. Former director of the Galleria Civica in Modena, Walter Guadagnini is a curator and professor of history of contemporary art at the Accademia delle Belle Arti in Bologna. He is also commissaire unique for the Italian section of “Paris Photo.” Since 1985 Giovanna Calvenzi works as photo-editor and also collaborates with various Italian magazines. Ljubodrag Andric Works 2008–2016

arrationless – in fact, each picture stands on its own – the works of Andric focus on the concept of insurmountable limits (walls), emptiness (interiors), and absence (life without humans). This important publication not only provides an introductory essay by the editor, Demetrio Paparoni, but also a conversation between the artist and William Ewing as well as texts by Barry Schwabsky, Aldo Nove, and Philip Tinari that will allow readers to approach the work of one of today’s most interesting photographers and to analyze up-close the themes of his pictures. Ljubodrag Andric was born in 1965 in Belgrade, Serbia, into a family of artists. After having worked for fifteen years in Italy as an ad photographer, in 2002 he moved to Toronto, in Canada. • A selection of over 100 photos taken from 2008 to today, featuring landscapes, walls, facades, and interiors of medieval and modern buildings. • Captured as spaces in their essential form, the locations photographed by Ljubodrag Andric are devoid of their intrinsic monumentality. • Andric’s large-scale photographs are characterized by the absence of human figures and by a formal structure that, despite the attention to realistic detail, is rooted in the various forms of geometric abstraction. Demetrio Paparoni, writer, art critic, and curator, is the author of numerous books on art about Mimmo Paladino/Brian Eno, Timothy Greenfield-Sanders, Chuck Close, Jonathan Lasker, Tony Oursler, Anish Kapoor, Wang Guangyi, and Li Songsong. He has also contributed texts for the catalogues of anthological exhibitions in Italy dedicated to Andy Warhol, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Keith Haring, David LaChapelle, Roy Lichtenstein, and Edward Hopper.

he cinema of Nigeria, often referred to as “Nollywood,” a term coined in the mid-1990s to describe Nigeria’s vibrant film industry, consists of movies produced in the country but watched all over Africa and largely by Africans in the diaspora. The history and development of the Nigerian motion picture industry is sometimes generally classified in four main eras: the Colonial era, Golden Age, Video film era, and the emerging New Nigerian cinema. This book presents a selection of photographic portraits by Iké Udé depicting some of the major Nigerian actors and actresses, television presenters, directors, and producers. • In 2009, UNESCO rated Nollywood as the second-biggest film industry in the world after Bollywood in terms of output. • Udé’s work is in the permanent and private collections worldwide and he is the publisher and editor-in-chief of the seminal magazine, aRUDE, founded 1995. He is the author of the influential Style File: The World’s Most Elegantly Dressed, 2008, Harper Collins. With his ongoing photographic self-portraits, Nigerian-born Iké Udé explores a world of dualities: photographer/performance artist, artist/spectator, African/postnationalist, mainstream/marginal, individual/everyman, and fashion/ art. As a Nigerian-born New York-based artist, conversant with the world of fashion and celebrity, Udé gives conceptual aspects of performance and representation a new vitality, melding his own theatrical selves and multiple personae with his art.

he Rijksmuseum van Oudheden in Leiden and the Museo Civico Archeologico in Bologna can be considered “twins” due to their similar traditions, international prestige, and archeological legacies, but their Egyptian collections – both museums hold important masterpieces from the same area of the Saqqara necropolis – are what they share most in common. This book celebrates the museums’ intense and fruitful collaboration through the display of over 500 finds – some on loan from the Dutch museum for the first time – spanning the entire arc of Egyptian civilization, from the Predynastic to the Roman period. Since the study of history can never be completely objective, it is always appropriate to find the right way to recount the past. This dialogue and comparison between two major international Egyptian collections has provided an opportunity to “musealize” ancient Egypt yet again and, at the same time, offers a new key to interpreting the works, thanks to the contribution made by many internationally renowned Egyptian scholars. • The book presents hundreds of major finds spanning the entire arc of Egyptian civilization, from the Predynastic to the Roman period. • The comparison between two important Egyptian collections, one of them amongst the top ten in the world and the other ranking as the third in Italy, is a new topic. • A great overview of ancient Egypt’s civilization in a reference work. Daniela Picchi, graduated in Egyptology, is curator of the Egyptian Department at the Archeological Museum of Bologna. She teaches Egyptology at the University of Ravenna. Paola Giovetti is technical director of the Archeological Museum of Bologna.

eventeenth-century Dutch landscapes, still lifes, and scenes of daily life are so realistic in appearance that one would think that the artists painted from life. They actually executed their works in their studios, however, often on the basis of drawings. Dutch artists made many types of preliminary drawings, including broad compositional sketches, drawings of the landscape in their sketchbooks, counterproofs, construction drawings, and individual figural studies. Artists also indicated compositional ideas on their canvases and panels using underdrawings that are revealed through infrared reflectography. This volume features a wide variety of subject types and artists, among others Hendrick Avercamp, Gerrit Berckheyde, Aelbert Cuyp, Jan van Goyen, Adriaen van Ostade, Jacob van Ruisdael, Pieter Saenredam, and Rembrandt van Rijn. This fully illustrated exhibition catalogue includes three scholarly essays as well as entries on all the artists included in the show written by these and other experts.
• Seventeenth-century Dutch painters and preliminary drawings for their major paintings. • The exhibition concept was proposed by Peter Schatborn, a foremost authority on Dutch drawings and former head of the Rijksprentenkabinet, Amsterdam. • The exhibition’s co-curators are Arthur Wheelock, Curator of Northern Baroque Paintings at the National Gallery of Art, and Ger Luijten, Director of the Fondation Custodia / Collection Frits Lugt, Paris.

The iconography of motherhood in the art and visual culture of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries, from early avant-garde movements to the present

hether as a symbol of creativity or as a metaphor for art itself, the archetype of the mother has been a central figure in the history of art, from the Venuses of the Stone Age to the “bad girls” of the postfeminist era and through centuries of religious works depicting innumerable maternity scenes. In undertaking an analysis of the representation of motherhood, The Great Mother traces a history of women’s empowerment, chronicling gender struggles, sexual politics, and clashes between tradition and emancipation. The volume mixes past and present, juxtaposing contemporary art, historical works, and artifacts from the world of film and literature, weaving a rich tapestry of associations and images. It brings together nearly 300 color images, illustrating monographic texts and in-depth information on all the artists in the exhibition and a collection of new essays and criticism, written specifically for the occasion.

Employing unconventional tools – including medical equipment, dead animals, cancer cells, and a deceased man’s hand – he challenges both the relationship between science and ethics, and what art can morally embrace. Viskum works with installation, performance, photography, and painting, and has been represented at various exhibitions nationally and internationally. • Newsworthy artist: he was the subject of newspaper headlines when he used a truncated hand from a corpse as a paint brush.

A comprehensive look at paintings, objects, and installations by one of the most prominent artists on the Chinese contemporary art scene
O
ne of the most prestigious artists in Chinese contemporary art, Xiaobai Su is among a generation of legendary artists who left China in the 1980s. He adopts lacquer, a medium steeped in Chinese history, as his aesthetic means, and has developed a sensuous yet rigorous art practice that defies classification. Driven by Chinese tradition, Xiaobai Su creates intriguing and magnificent work that speaks a Western language of visual abstraction, with the Buddhist mantra “All reality is a phantom, and all phantoms are real” as its core. Luscious and mysterious, his body of work is defiantly sculptural yet exquisitely delivered – a constellation of extraordinary objects.

he volume offers the possibility to trace thirteen years in the evolution of Katrin Fridriks with a focus on her latest and most innovative works, paintings, and shows. Born in 1974 in Reykjavik (Iceland), Katrin Fridriks is an abstract conceptual painter, living and working in Luxembourg. She fuses the natural energies of her native Iceland with an explosive, however organic, abstract expressionism and Japanese calligraphy signs, filtered through installations and architectural compositions. Based on an endless exercise on matter and technique, Katrin Fridriks’s recent works include perspective studies of her black-and-white series (Gene&Ethics and Stendhal Syndrome) and of the metallic series Riding Awareness. The progressive enlargement of her drippings producing unique zoom effects is like macro photography into her paintings. By creating these new perspectives, Katrin Fridriks’s work brings an innovative dimension to abstraction.

his volume brings together for the first time all the significant works of one of South Africa’s most highly respected and celebrated artists, created over more than thirty years. his book traces the ways in which women artists deftly transformed the language of sculpture. It seeks to identify the multiple strains of proto-feminist practices, characterized by abstraction and repetition, which rejected the singularity of the masterwork and rearranged sculptural form to be contingent upon the way the body moved around it in space. The catalogue sections span the late 1950s through to today and include: an examination of abstraction based on the human figure and the influence of the unconscious; works by Magdalena Abakanowicz, Eva Hesse, Marisa Merz, Mira Schendel, Michelle Stuart, Hannah Wilke, and Jackie Winsor; the move beyond singular, three-dimensional objects towards architectonic works characterized by repetition, structure, and design; the use of installation-based environments, embracing domestic materials and craft as an embedded discourse. • The catalogue features approximately 30 artists and nearly 100 works in total.

orman Rockwell (1894–1978), one of the most popular American artists of the past century, has often been regarded as a simple illustrator and his work identified with the covers of the Saturday Evening Post. He is, instead, a total artist. An acute observer of human nature and talented storyteller, Rockwell captured America’s evolving society in small details and nuances, portraying scenes of the everyday life of ordinary people and presenting a personal and often idealised interpretation of the American identity. His images offered a reassuring visual haven in a period of epoch-making transformation that led to the birth of modern American society. The art of Rockwell entered the homes of millions of Americans for over fifty years. • The book is published in collaboration with the Norman Rockwell Museum of Stockbridge (Massachusetts). • All the original works are taken from the Norman Rockwell Museum.

B
orn in Dublin, Ireland, in 1945, Sean Scully has gained international prominence as one of the most admired contemporary abstract painters today. Fusing the traditions of European painting with the distinct character of American abstraction, Scully’s great achievement is the reinvigoration of abstract painting with the metaphorical, the philosophical and the sublime combined with the earthy tangibility of paint. Focussing on the works realised in the latest seven years, this volume is constructed on a dualism between two conflicting accounts. On the one hand, the light of architecture (Doric) and on the other that of natural landscape (Landline): the geometrical composition of the Doric series of works is justaposed to the overlapping of natural horizons of the Landlines. Elected a Royal Academician in 2013, Scully has been shortlisted for the Turner Prize twice, in 1989 and in 1993. • This volume presents the complete work of the artist.

Spanning more than forty-five years, this volume traces the theme of suspension throughout Bourgeois’s career
A
long with a group of drawings from the 1940s, in which pendulous forms are delineated in black ink, the selection of works presented in this volume demonstrate the myriad ways in which Louise Bourgeois approached material, form, and scale. They also affirm the various readings of Bourgeois’s work, whether formal, psychological, biographical, or experiential. For Bourgeois, the sculptures’ suspension is an expression of the psyche; as she stated: “Horizontality is a desire to give up, to sleep. Verticality is an attempt to escape. Hanging and floating are states of ambivalence.”

Paolo Scheggi The Humanistic Measurement of Space edited by Francesca Pola
The work of the Italian artist Paolo Scheggi during the 1960s, a crucial creative decade prior to his death in 1971
S
cheggi’s dazzling work developed in postwar Milan, an effervescent and international artistic context, enriched by the crucial presence of Lucio Fontana, and of experimental artists from the new Italian generation: Piero Manzoni, Enrico Castellani, Agostino Bonalumi, Dadamaino, Gianni Colombo. With them, Scheggi’s work shares the desire to move beyond traditional painting into a new creative and perceptual dimension: objective, physical, and spatial. The volume brings together pivotal examples of Scheggi’s work on the spatial investigation of surface: from the early metal assemblages Lamiere to the mature complex constructions of his Intersuperfici and Strutture modulari.

Fernando Botero Paintings 1959–2015 edited by Rudy Chiappini
A monograph dedicated to the great Latin American artist, gathering all his paintings made in the last thirty years Specifications size 11 x 113/4 in. (28 x 30 cm) 256 pages 210 colour illustrations hardcover ISBN 978-88-572-2759-7 £ 55.00, $ 85.00, Can. $ 85.00

otero has gained international fame, capturing the whimsy of life by painting corpulent and sometimes comical figures. The dilation of his subjects gives the figures an abstract, unreal, and even grotesque dimension. Studies in beauty and terror, Botero’s monumental figures can be sensual, and many are filled with pain and sorrow. This monograph presents the paintings realised in the last thirty years and created using his own unique language, which is a distinguishing feature of his work and an extraordinary blend of Latin American tradition and European painting. • The selection documents the artist’s career to date and a survey of Botero’s key works.

oberto Sebastián Antonio Matta Echaurren (1911–2002) was an international figure whose worldview represented a synthesis of European, American, and Latin American cultures. As a member of the surrealist movement and an early mentor to several abstract expressionists, Matta broke with both groups to pursue a highly personal artistic vision. His mature work blended abstraction, figuration, and multi-dimensional spaces into complex, cosmic landscapes. This monograph traces the life and the work of the artist from the beginning to his most celebrated works; it also includes the interview that, just before his death in 2002 at the age of 91, Roberto Matta gave Tate’s contributing editor Hans-Ulrich Obrist. • An essential book devoted to the work of Roberto Matta, one of the few Latin American artists to achieve international fame. • The volume features full-color reprints of some of Matta’s most brilliant works. • It includes an interwiew with the artist by Hans-Ulrich Obrist.

Naum Medovoy. Last March editorial coordination Paola Gribaudo; texts by N. Medovoy, T. Tweeten, V. Komar, A. Traubner, O. Salamatina, and J. Cauman Specifications size 91/2 x 11 in. (24 x 28 cm) 80 pages 35 colour illustrations hardcover ISBN 978-88-572-2631-6 £ 22.50, $ 35.00, Can. $ 35.00

aum Medovoy’s career spans four decades. A selftaught artist, he was mostly a documentary filmmaker until he began printing stills from his films, applying oil sticks and black and white inks to their surfaces. Medovoy’s photo-documentary collage paintings are rooted in his childhood memories and previous work. It is this appeal of Medovoy’s work – which straddles the line between beauty and grotesqueness – that gives it its lasting influence and afterlife, that “grips” our throat; or, as George Stevens once declared in talking about film, that bounces off the page and into the viewer’s mind, like something alive and changing. The same thing can be said about Medovoy’s art; it lasts with you long after you’ve left it.

his beautiful and definitive monograph showcases the enchanting work of Indian master painter Sakti Burman. Legends, family, and Indian gods meet and mingle in Sakti Burman’s private, kaleidoscopic universe. Burman is one of India’s pioneering painters, who was born in 1935 in Kolkata and grew up in what is now Bangladesh. This monograph is the definitive publication illustrating the evolution of the artist’s prolific paintings, drawings, and watercolours, contextualizing his lifelong exploration into alternative ways of seeing. Burman’s colourful figures hark back to a kind of ancient “lost paradise,” but also sustain a fresh and irrepressible faith in the beauty and sensibilities of Mother Nature alongside a hopeful human spirit.

With over a hundred photographs, this volume explores the rooms, objects and light of the apartment in which Carol Rama has been living and working for over seventy years, retracing the personal life and artistic career of the great painter. The book is intended to disclose a secret place, in which the artist has gathered countless mementoes over the years: ones from her family, donated by friends such as Man Ray, Carlo Mollino, and Andy Warhol, or collected in memory of special situations or people. While apparently scattered, these objects have actually been arranged with great care.

A fascinating story in search of the photographer’s creative process, this publication accompanies the largest European photography competition for amateurs and professionals, broadcast by Sky Arts starting in January 2016
A
challenge between twelve competitors on eight different topics, to declare the best photographer in Europe: best not only for his/her talent, but also for the ability to express him/herself in many fields of photography. This volume covers the talent show of Sky Arts through the most important snapshots of episodes, backstage happenings, and show images plus essays by the judges explaining the reasons for their choices in declaring the winner. Across each episode, this book discusses each single artist, including their background, view of photography, and dreams, while at the same time it analyzes our knowledge of some of the most important figures in world photography. Not only a contest, but a true journey across the history of photography, techniques, and styles: through the pages of this book, readers can take part in the creation of a photograph beginning with its theme up to its actual realization and the final result. In order to guarantee the greatest level of quality on the part of the participants, the twelve competing photographers were subject to rigorous selection by some of the greatest European experts in the field (a collector, a gallerist, and a photographer). Through their perspective, readers may analyze the critical expertise needed in judging professional photography. • The talent show of Sky Arts: the largest European photography competition. Filippo Maggia is currently researcher at the Photography Department of the Royal College of Art, London. Since 2010, he has taught photographic documentation at the Accademia di Belle Arti in Catania (Sicily).

Tomasz Gudzowaty All Eyes with an introduction by Maja Kaszkur
A photography book on Tomasz Gudzowaty’s oeuvre, which questions the limits of classic photography and the new creative possibilities of the medium
Specifications size 81/4 x 101/4 in. (20.5 x 25.5 cm) 102 pages 66 b/w illustrations accordion binding with slipcase ISBN 978-88-572-3110-5 £ 50.00, $ 75.00, Can. $ 100.00
T
he art of portraiture is among the principal strands of contemporary photography. It also plays a prominent role in work by Tomasz Gudzowaty, an artist who has made a name for himself as an internationally recognized photographer through numerous awards, publications, and exhibitions worldwide. This book is an attempt to reinterpret and integrate into a new context the images he has taken over many years. The result is an unabashedly varied and consistent body of work – a collection of artfully composed images, singling out individual personalities and groups who reveal their inner self through gazes and postures in the brief and unique moment they spend in front of a camera, and, by this, allowing the man on the other side of the lens to tell his story as well. As Maja Kaszkur, the editor, puts it in her foreword, “The macro-world around us has its reproduction in our micro-world, and vice versa – something very tiny and almost unnoticeable can reveal the scale of something much bigger but not previously understood. Non-stop, over and over again, we need to keep fixing our gaze on the world, and on ourselves.” • Gudzowaty is the best known name in contemporary Polish photography. Tomasz Gudzowaty (b. 1971) is a Polish documentary, portrait, and art photographer who gained international recognition through numerous publications and awards, most notably with the World Press Photo in which he succeeded nine times. He has traveled to over 100 countries across all continents for his photographic projects, pursuing diverse subjects, with a special focus on wildlife, sports, and social issues. In recent years, portraiture has become essential to his photography.

onsidered one of the great masters of contemporary Japanese photography, Daido Moriyama is always on the road, a lone traveller whose blackand-white images recount visions and worlds hidden just beneath the surface of reality. This book shows for the first time over 250 colour photographs taken between the late 1960s and the 1980s. A constant flow of images that is often frenetic or suddenly suspended, following the rhythm of an unfettered, restless life spent travelling the roads of the world. Daido Moriyama (b. 1938) is one of the most important living photographers and photobook makers. His career began in Tokyo in the 1960s, where he formed part of the influential Provoke group, which published some of the most innovative avant-garde photography made in post-war Japan. In a career spanning over fifty years, Moriyama is best known for his wild, blurred, grainy style of black and white photography, capturing urban experience on the streets of Tokyo and New York. However, there are many sides to his practice and he also works with colour, polaroid, silkscreen, and installation. • Moriyama’s work can be found in the collections of many major museums. Filippo Maggia is currently researcher in the Photography Department of the Royal College of Art, London. Since 2010, he has taught photographic documentation at the Accademia di Belle Arti in Catania (Sicily).

Zambian Portraits Paolo Solari Bozzi
The result of a four-month journey across Zambia, this volume bears witness to Paolo Solari Bozzi’s love for the poetry of Southern Africa and its people
F
or four months in 2014, with his wife Antonella and their Land Rover TD5, Paolo Solari Bozzi traveled across Zambia, penetrating into some of the lesser-known areas of this fascinating country, including the remote Bangwelu swamps where the locals had hardly ever come across a European visitor. Using mechanical medium-format cameras and wide-angle lenses, Paolo depicts, in about 120 blackand-white pictures developed in his own darkroom, some aspects of the lives of Zambians at work – be they fishermen, harvesters, road workers, miners or shopkeepers, without forgetting the innate beauty of a landscape captured in photographs taken from above.
Specifications size 133/4 x 133/4 in. (35 x 35 cm) dual-language edition (Italian-English) 176 pages 123 b/w illustrations hardcover ISBN 978-88-572-2683-5 £ 42.00, $ 65.00, Can. $ 65.00

Rauzier’s work transforms reality; it fascinates us with its scale, and takes the viewer on a journey through the visible world Specifications size 141/3 x 91/2 in. (36 x 24 cm) 208 pages 100 colour illustrations hardcover ISBN 978-88-572-2986-7 £ 45.00, $ 70.00, Can. $ 70.00
A
s a fashion photographer in the 1970s Rauzier longed to break free from the constraints of advertising and film photography. Rauzier uses thousands of high-resolution close-up views and includes them into his large compositions, maintaining the focus and sharpness of the smallest detail. Rauzier carefully composes each work from elements and images he has collected over many years, working in some ways more like a painter than a photographer, creating his own supernatural man-made world. Using digital technology, he cuts, moves, and constructs buildings, gardens, animals, and many other objects, carefully collected during long photographic sessions to inspire a new fantastic landscape, a capricious picture, or a baroque masterpiece. • There are no similar titles on this artist. • Rauzier’s works have been shown in many international institutions such as the Los Angeles Annenberg Foundation and Moscow’s MOMA.

Fashion
Electric Fashion photographs by Frederic Aranda texts by Christine Suppes, foreword by Ken Downing
Photographer Frederic Aranda’s love letter to one of California’s most fascinating collections: the Christine Suppes Collection
T
hree decades of fashion brought together in one collection, worn as originally intended by the collector herself, and developed over five years by established fashion and portrait photographer Frederic Aranda: this is Electric Fashion. But why is it electric? It is the story of how the collector, Christine Suppes, blazed an indelible trail into online fashion editorial whilst developing a unique collection in the heart of Silicon Valley. Electric Fashion is essential viewing, punctuated with an academic perspective, comprehensive technical references, and archival text from the collection’s accompanying website, fashionlines.com. This timeless tome boasts a double vantage point; on the one hand, each garment is photographed in a studio setting to enhance critical academic understanding, whilst on the other, worn by the collector herself to depict the garments as they were originally intended to be worn. The finished product is a 360 degree view of fashion, from historical, cultural, and practical standpoints.

Italian Glamour. The Essence of Italian Fashion From the Postwar Years to the Present Day The Enrico Quinto and Paolo Tinarelli Collection A celebratory tribute to Italian style through fashion and costume in the twentieth century
T
he fashion archive of Enrico Quinto and Paolo Tinarelli has been painstakingly assembled over the last twenty years and traces the international evolution of costume from the mid-19th century to the present day. This quintessential volume on Italian Style narrates the development of fashion through around three hundred dresses, chronologically ordered and selected from an international collection of over six thousand pieces, enriched by commentary by historians, journalists and fashion designers, but also by photography, film and personal testimony: a concrete resource for historians of costume, students and enthusiasts. Most of the displayed dresses were documented by photographers when they first appeared worn by famous actresses, models and jet set personalities of the time: from the Duchess of Windsor to Queen Paola of Belgium, from Princess Grace of Monaco to Ava Gardner, Marilyn Monroe, Sophia Loren, Audrey Hepburn, Veruschka, Marisa Berenson, Grace Jones amongst many others.

The leading movements, major figures, works and ideas that shaped the architecture of the twentieth century, one of the richest and most complex periods in human history
A
360-degree review of the architectural developments of the twentieth century, Architecture. Movements and Trends from the 19th Century to the Present retraces the history of the best-known groups and movements, as well as underlining the powerful influence of trends such as Totalitarian Architecture, Tropical Architecture, Social-Realist Architecture, Blob Architecture and Neo-Vernacular, all of which played a significant role in the rise and evolution of modern trends in the discipline. In tackling a highly complex century characterized by the rise of globalization, this exhaustive overview does not confine itself to analyzing architectural trends in Western countries but expands its field of vision to include world architecture as well. A comprehensive study and research tool, the book is divided into chapters devoted to each individual movement, with a selection of critical essays and photographs of the most important works and projects. Lastly, a brief thematic bibliography and other research tools make this book an indispensable instrument for students of architecture, design and engineering, as well as anyone with a passion for the subject. • Each entry has been written by specialists in the field in a clear, analytical style which makes the history of architecture accessible to non-specialists as well. The architect and critic Luca Molinari has been associate professor of history of contemporary architecture at the University of Naples since 2003, and guest professor at the Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts (China). He published different volumes in the field of architectural history and theory.

Milano Porta Nuova Italy Rises edited by Luca Molinari and Kelly Russell Catella
Creativity and innovation, urban growth and experimentation, present and future of architecture in Milan
A
fresh face in the urban landscape, the architectural transformation of an important area in the centre of Milan represents an occasion for an experimental research in the city. The volume describes the process leading to the definition of the Porta Nuova area in all its phases. It brings together the voices of all the different figures who contributed to the project: producers, developers, public administrators, and all the planners who worked on the area – Cesar Pelli, Stefano Boeri, Cino Zucchi, Michele De Lucchi, Cucinella Architects, and the Kpf Studio,
among many others. With great attention to detail and to more technical aspects, the volume illustrates a crucial step in the transformation of Milan, which is increasingly set to become a point of reference at the crossroads between European and international models of urban development. The book is fully illustrated with color photographs, plans, and visualizations.

or architecture, the Tel Aviv Museum of Art’s Paul and Herta Amir Building provides a new spatial and tectonic paradigm; for museology, it represents a new approach for resolving tensions between divergent cultural agendas. The Tel Aviv Museum of Art is an unusual synthesis of two opposing paradigms of the contemporary museum: the museum of neutral white boxes dedicated to aesthetic contemplation and the museum of architectural spectacle, a site of public excitation. A comprehensive compendium of drawings, photographs, and texts, this book assesses the building within several of the most important discursive contexts of architectural and aesthetic theory. Preston Scott Cohen is the Gerald M. McCue Professor of Architecture at Harvard University Graduate School of Design. Dr. Eran Neuman earned a Ph.D. and an M.A. in architecture at the University of California, Los Angeles.

AEB 1966–2016 Fifty years of architectural design in Qatar edited by Luca Molinari
The book traces over fifty years of research and architecture against the impending background of the history of Qatar
T
hrough a selection of about thirty projects illustrated by photographs and drawings, the book reveals the capacity of the Arab Engineering Bureau to respect tradition and at the same time espouse the future of Qatar, which is currently involved in preparations for the 2022 World Cup, and the economic, social, and environmental development plan, Qatar National Vision 2030. Ibrahim Mohamed Jaidah’s critical commitment to acknowledge the vernacular architectural tradition, along with his great experience stemming from important collaborations of a contemporary nature outside the Persian Gulf nations, have led to the consolidation of the Arab Engineering Bureau as one of the most important firms within the process of Qatar’s modernization.

99 Domes Imam Mohammed bin Abdul Wahab Mosque edited by Ibrahim Jaidah
The history and the architecture of the extraordinary “Mosque of Domes”, as it is commonly called because of its 99 domes
A
photographic survey of the Imam Mohammed bin Abdul Wahab Mosque in Doha, Qatar, this volume retraces the story of the building and the architectural elements of the religious complex, projected in full respect of the traditional Qatari architecture. Although this extravagant mosque has a very modern feel with crisp lines and large open outdoor spaces, it preserves some of the traditional features of the Gulf region’s architectural past. The Imam Mohammed bin Abdul Wahab Mosque in Doha is Qatar’s largest mosque, covering a total area of 175,164 sqm. On the whole the mosque can hold a congregation of 30,000 people.

The first monograph devoted to the Italian studio65 group for their fiftieth anniversary
P
ublished for the exhibition celebrating the fiftieth anniversary of Studio65 at the GAM in Turin, the city where the studio was founded in 1965, The Merchant of Clouds covers half a century of activity: a lovely story, an extraordinary journey across fifty years of the future. From the time of sit-ins at the School of Architecture in 1967 – when Studio65 developed its ironic, critical and desecrating design style – to initial interior designs with Leonardo, the sofa Bocca, Capitello, Baby-lonia – pop design objects that became symbols of a revolution in taste and language – and then a journey around the world, in 1975, in search of interesting opportunities where they believed designing and making dreams come true to improve the world was indeed still possible. The Merchant of Clouds. Studio65: 50 Years of Future documents these projects that, in half a century, stemmed from their desire to discover the remotest parts of the world – from Old Europe to the Middle East, from the Asia of the Celestial Empire to the island of Bali in the tropical southeast, from Mediterranean Africa to Black Africa, from Russia to California – always respecting each individuality seen through curious and unbiased eyes. • Covers fifty years of the famous design studio known for its ironic and irreverent design. • The studio was responsible for truly iconic furniture designs, such as the Capitello chair and Bocca sofa. • Studio65’s designs are on display in major museum collections, including MoMA and the Triennale.

Last Words Gabriele Tinti, preface by Derrick de Kerchove images by Andres Serrano
Last Words is a collection of found poems. Its conceptual basis is dramatic: to recover the lyricism of final moments
G
abriele Tinti has composed the last words of ordinary people who chose to commit suicide into a collection, a single, long, painful, moving poem of reality. Their words have been organized by the author into a kind of collective epitaph and faithfully recorded without any kind of alteration, freeing them of any pathetic attempt at identifying, fiction, or literary affectation. They are lethal, terrible, lucid words written as a shout, a scream, in serenity, with awareness, at peace; words that contain all the terrible complexity of life. In being last words, the end of all communication, of every vital impulse, they testify to the most authentic difficulty of being men.
Specifications size 51/2 x 81/4 in. (14 x 21 cm) 96 pages 8 colour illustrations paperback ISBN 978-88-572-2987-4 £ 12.50, $ 18.95, Can. $ 18.95
• A raw, essential, and real representation of the experience of death. • The book contains an essay by Derrick de Kerchove and is enriched by pictures of people who died by suicide, taken from the scandalous series “The Morgue” by Andres Serrano. • The last words of suicides: a tragic song of lives come to an end.
The Secret of the Gondola David Alan Brown
A masterpiece by Canaletto leads a young art historian on the trail of an unsolved mystery
A
young art historian pursuing academic success. A painting by the most famous eighteenth-century painter of vedute, Canaletto. A gondola once possibly belonging to the poet Robert Browning – and who else before him? These are the key elements of the novel. When Jeremy Allyn is assigned Canaletto’s Vedute by his teacher as the topic for his dissertation, a subject many have already written about, he realizes he must find an original perspective. He therefore decides to focus on Canaletto’s figures, a secondary feature of his celebrated architectural scenes. This marks the beginning of an adventure with unexpected turns that will lead Jeremy to make some astonishing discoveries and to uncover a crime which had remained buried for centuries.

• The engaging adventures of a young art historian: a detective story set in eighteenth-century art and a crime that had remained buried for centuries. • The mysteries underlying a masterpiece by the Venetian painter: Il bacino di San Marco, kept at the Columbia Museum of Art, South Carolina.

The book and exhibition are truly unprecedented due to the scholarship of the curators, the academic precision combined with educational intent, the number of works on display including paintings, drawings and manuscripts, and the exceptional loans from private collections and the world’s most important museums and libraries, such as the Louvre, the National Gallery of Art in Washington, the Musei Vaticani, the Royal Collection at Windsor and the Pinacoteca Ambrosiana. The book features numerous masterpieces, including a large number of paintings, more than one hundred drawings and various extraordinary codices and incunabula on loan from some of the greatest collections in the world: major works such as the Dreyfus Madonna from the National Gallery of Art in Washington and three masterpieces from the Louvre – the Belle Ferronnière, the Annunciation and the St John the Baptist – as well as thirty wonderful sheets from the Codex Atlanticus and thirty drawings from the English Royal Collection. Pietro C. Marani, professor of modern art history at the Milan Politecnico, was co-director of the restoration work for The Last Supper and co-author of the exhibition catalogues on Leonardo at the Louvre and the Metropolitan Museum in 2013. Maria Teresa Fiorio teaches museum studies at the Università Statale in Milan.

uring his first voyages of exploration to the Indian Himalayas from 1926, Giuseppe Tucci encountered a world poor in material comforts but rich in wisdom. These wisdom traditions had been transcribed in brilliant colours into pictures of teachers, gods, and their paradises, covering the interior walls of mud brick temples. From 1926 up to his last Tibetan expedition in 1948, Tucci was able to collect over two hundred portable paintings, as well as many Sanskrit and Tibetan manuscripts. Each of the paintings has its own story, which the volume brings to life through photographs of traditional Tibet from the Tucci expeditions, as well as contributions on the meaning of the sacred images. The text, edited by Deborah Klimburg-Salter, introduces the viewer to a world filled with rich imagery. In addition to Tucci’s photographs and contributions to the study of Tibetan art, the book presents a collection of paintings from the eleventh to the eighteenth centuries, enabling readers to discover Tibetan art with particular reference to compositional style, iconography, and the reading of a thangka. • A comprehensive survey of the art of Tibetan painting. • The book enables the reader to admire the thangkas painted by monks or secular artists primarily for Tibetan monastic communities. • The selection of thangkas shown (in many cases after being restored to their original splendour) is exceptional in both quantitative and qualitative terms. Deborah Klimburg-Salter is an art historian and professor for non-European art history at the Department of Art History of the University of Vienna.

Starting from its origins in the 1960s and following its evolution, the journey includes the viticulture landscape, the many international markets, the winemaking revolution, the different societies and movements, the wineries (inner sanctums where the wine ritual is celebrated), and even Italian cuisine and its global success. a Scala is “the world’s number one theatre, because it is the one that gives the maximum musical enjoyment”, wrote Stendhal on 10 November 1816. Most of Italy’s greatest operatic artists, and many of the finest singers from other nations, too, have appeared at La Scala during the past 200 years. Today, the theatre is still recognized as one of the leading opera and ballet theatres in the world. Through six sections (The Beginnings; The Early 19th Century; The Late 19th Century; The Early 20th Century; The Late 20th Century; The Millennium Scala) this volume tells the theatre’s history from its origins to the present day, richly illustrated in colour.
