his book presents the Carmignac Collection which, to date, boasts around 250 works of art from the 20th and 21st centuries. A unique and emblematic overview of modern and contemporary creation, the collection includes major works by Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein, Keith Haring, Jean-Michel Basquiat, and Gerhard Richter. These legendary works bear witness to an extraordinary time period and constitute the pillars of the Carmignac Collection, which has also been completed by the addition of emerging artists’ works. Guided by his instincts, Edouard Carmignac leaves his personal mark on this eclectic collection since this patron of the arts is first and foremost seeking works that elicit unprecedented feelings of rich aesthetic beauty. Through detailed analyses, the book presents itself as an open conversation on contemporary creation. The expertise brought forth by renowned authors such as the art historian Germano Celant, the curators Nicolas Bourriaud and Camille Morineau, the art critic Catherine Millet, the filmmaker David Cronenberg, or the philosopher Luc Ferry— invited by the collection’s director Gaia Donzet—bring to life these masterpieces and unveil this unique collection. Organized by theme (shock and liberty, transgression, irony, etc.), the artworks listed in the volume act as a window into our modern world.
• A reference book on the Carmignac Collection, which gathers works by legendary contemporary artists. • Texts on contemporary art, written by art history experts and critics. • A book for collectors, contemporary art lovers and artists, and future visitors ofthe Carmignac Foundation (expected opening summer 2016, on the island of Porquerolles). 8

hether as a symbol of creativity or as a metaphor for art itself, the archetype of the mother has been a central figure in the history of art, from the Venuses of the Stone Age to the “bad girls” of the postfeminist era and through centuries of religious works depicting innumerable maternity scenes. In undertaking an analysis of the representation of motherhood, The Great Mother traces a history of women’s empowerment, chronicling gender struggles, sexual politics, and clashes between tradition and emancipation. The volume mixes past and present, juxtaposing contemporary art, historical works, and artifacts from the world of film and literature, weaving a rich tapestry of associations and images. It brings together nearly 300 color images, illustrating monographic texts and in-depth information on all the artists in the exhibition and a collection of new essays and criticism, written specifically for the occasion.
• Motherhood and the condition of women through a century of artworks, from Magdalena Abakanowicz, Ana Mendieta, Marisa Merz to Carla Accardi, Yoko Ono, Jeff Koons, Constantin Brancusi, Maurizio Cattelan, and Lucio Fontana. • A book about women’s power: above all, the power denied to women and the power won by women over the course of the twentieth century. • A story that spans the twentieth century, exploring female icons and clichés of femininity, and developing a complex reflection on woman as an active participant in representation, no longer just a passive subject of it. Massimiliano Gioni is director of the Trussardi Foundation, artistic director of the New Museum in New York, and director of the Venice Biennale in 2013. 10

A comprehensive look at paintings, objects, and installations by one of the most prominent artists on the Chinese contemporary art scene
Publication March 2016
O
ne of the most prestigious artists in Chinese contemporary art, Xiaobai Su is among a generation of legendary artists who left China in the 1980s. He adopts lacquer, a medium steeped in Chinese history, as his aesthetic means, and has developed a sensuous yet rigorous art practice that defies classification. Driven by Chinese tradition, Xiaobai Su creates intriguing and magnificent work that speaks a Western language of visual abstraction, with the Buddhist mantra “All reality is a phantom, and all phantoms are real” as its core. Luscious and mysterious, his body of work is defiantly sculptural yet exquisitely delivered – a constellation of extraordinary objects.
• With around 300 images, this volume presents the complete work of the artist from 2007 to 2015. • Xiaobai Su has garnered international fame as his work appears in museum collections in China, Taiwan, Germany, and the US, and is exhibited at galleries across the globe from France to China. With a PhD from Harvard University and a position as research professor in the Department of History of Art and Architecture at the University of Pittsburgh, Gao Minglu is a renowned critic, curator, and scholar of Chinese contemporary art since the mid-1980s. Benjamin Alexander is a philosopher and art critic.

Publication April 2016

his volume brings together for the first time all the significant works of one of South Africa’s most highly respected and celebrated artists, created over more than thirty years. It starts with her challenging work in the most oppressive days of apartheid, records the heady days of liberation and tracks the difficulties of transformation. Described by ex MoMA director Robert Storr as “one of the foremost artists of her generation”, Williamson continues to be interested in recording contemporary history and making visible what might otherwise be ignored. Her work has addressed slavery, the bureaucracy of the apartheid state, the pandemic of HIV/AIDS, and South Africa’s Truth and Reconciliation Commission. In recent years, she has travelled the world extensively, undertaking art projects and producing an ongoing series about cities.
• Sue Williamson was one of the first artists ever to oppose the Apartheid state through the medium of art. • In a register that is forceful, yet rare for its sympathy, she unveils the voices and experiences of those repressed, forgotten, and who contributed to the struggle. She paved the way for successive generations of artists to break the veil of silence on the social issues surrounding these years. Mark Gevisser is a prize-winning South African author and journalist who writes for international publications. Pumla Gobodo-Madikizela is a senior research professor at the University of the Free State in South Africa. Ciraj Rassool directs University of the Western Cape’s African Programme in Museum and Heritage Studies. Chika Okeke-Agulu is an Igbo-Nigerian artist, art historian, art curator, and blogger. 14

Roberto Matta On the Edge of a Dream
R
oberto Sebastián Antonio Matta Echaurren (1911–2002) was an international figure whose worldview represented a synthesis of European, American, and Latin American cultures. As a member of the surrealist movement and an early mentor to several abstract expressionists, Matta broke with both groups to pursue a highly personal artistic vision. His mature work blended abstraction, figuration, and multi-dimensional spaces into complex, cosmic landscapes. This monograph traces the life and the work of the artist from the beginning to his most celebrated works; it also includes the interview that, just before his death last year at the age of 91, Roberto Matta gave Tate’s contributing editor Hans-Ulrich Obrist.
• An essential book devoted to the work of Roberto Matta, one of the few Latin American artists to achieve international fame. • The volume features full-color reprints of some of Matta’s most brilliant works. • It includes an interwiew with the artist by Hans-Ulrich Obrist. Founder and owner of the Salamatina Gallery in New York, Oksana Salamatina holds Master’s degrees in international economics and in art gallery administration. Oksana worked at both the New Museum and at the Nassau County Museum of Art, where she collaborated on a number of important exhibitions. Prior to her museum experience, Oksana worked for both Sotheby’s and Christie’s. Thomas Monahan, dealer and gallery owner, is an expert on Roberto Matta’s work.

his book traces the ways in which women artists deftly transformed the language of sculpture to invent radically new forms and processes that privileged studio practice, tactility, and the artist’s hand. Revolution in the Making seeks to identify the multiple strains of proto-feminist practices, characterized by abstraction and repetition, which rejected the singularity of the masterwork and rearranged sculptural form to be contingent upon the way the body moved around it in space. The catalogue sections span the late 1950s through to toda and includey: an examination of abstraction based on the human figure and the influence of the unconscious; works by Magdalena Abakanowicz, Eva Hesse, Marisa Merz, Mira Schendel, Michelle Stuart, Hannah Wilke, and Jackie Winsor; the move beyond singular, three-dimensional objects towards architectonic works characterized by repetition, structure, and design; the use of installation-based environments, embracing domestic materials and craft as an embedded discourse.
• The catalogue is divided into four sections, featuring approximately 30 artists and nearly 100 works in total. Paul Schimmel, curator, vice president at Hauser & Wirth; former chief curator, Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles. Jenni Sorkin, curator; art historian and critic; assistant professor of contemporary art history, University of California, Santa Barbara. nfolding in chronological order, this volume is divided into working periods each focusing on one or more techniques, highlighting the various stages of development of the artist’s language. The volume demonstrates how his need for a continuous testing and reformulation of the artistic grammar, his credo in that stylistic nomadism, allowed him not to become trapped in one tired formula but which paved the way for a continually innovative practice that he carried forward tenaciously, radically, throughout the entire course of his career. It examines the works related to each technique analyzed, enriched with various documentation: catalogues, invitations, books, magazines, newspapers, autograph writings, photographs, and statements by the artist concerning his poetics. • Exhibition catalogue accompanying the first UK retrospective of the artist’s work, held at Robilant + Voena, London in March 2015. • Lavishly illustrated with over 230 color photographs.

onsidered an international leader in the neo-pop movement as well as one of the most prominent figures of Middle Eastern contemporary art, Farhad Moshiri (1963) became well known for his ironic interpretations of hybrids between traditional Iranian forms and those of the globalized consumerist and popular culture. Utilizing a repertoire of medium and tools, Moshiri critically examines pertinent issues today and plays with the codes of modernism while developing a flamboyant iconography. • While Farhad Moshiri remains amongst the most important and iconic contemporary Middle Eastern artists of our time, the literature that has been published so far about his work does not cover the spectrum of his oeuvre. • Gathering approximately 160 works, the monograph approaches Moshiri’s work both thematically and chronologically.

O
rganized chronologically and subdivided into categories of the extremely broad creative oeuvre of Lucio Fontana (Rosario de Santa Fé, 1899Varese, 1968), one of the leading exponents of the international artistic avant-garde of the 20th century, this general annotated catalogue of sculpture, painting and “Ambientazioni” presents a rigorous historical and critical profile of the creative corpus of the artist “of the two worlds” at his highest expressive intensity and quality. The culmination of the archiving and authenticity documentation work of the Lucio Fontana Foundation, the “annotated catalogue” covers over four decades of creative activity characterized above all by an intuition of the intrinsic dynamism of the image of contemporary life through matter, light and space. The volume ranges from sculpture to its relation with architectural space, and from “spatial environments” to paintings dimensionally revolutionized by Fontana through the addition of material elements and especially by his use of “holes” and later “slashes” to penetrate the surface, in his continuously inventive search for “an art for the space age”.

T
he art of portraiture is among the principal strands of contemporary photography. It also plays a prominent role in work by Tomasz Gudzowaty, an artist who has made a name for himself as an internationally recognized photographer through numerous awards, publications, and exhibitions worldwide. This book is an attempt to reinterpret and integrate into a new context the images he has taken over many years. The result is an unabashedly varied and consistent body of work—a collection of artfully composed images, singling out individual personalities and groups who reveal their inner self through gazes and postures in the brief and unique moment they spend in front of a camera, and, by this, allowing the man on the other side of the lenses to tell his story as well. As Maja Kaszkur, the editor, puts it in her foreword, “The macro-world around us has its reproduction in our micro-world, and vice versa—something very tiny and almost unnoticeable can reveal the scale of something much bigger but not previously understood. Non-stop, over and over again, we need to keep fixing our gaze on the world, and on ourselves.”
• Gudzowaty is the best known name in contemporary Polish photography. Tomasz Gudzowaty (1971) is a Polish documentary, portrait, and art photographer who gained international recognition through numerous publications and awards, most notably with the World Press Photo in which he succeeded nine times. He has traveled to over 100 countries on all continents for his photographic projects, pursuing diverse subjects, with a special focus on wildlife, sports, and social issues. In recent years, portraiture has become essential to his photography. 27

or four months in 2014, with his wife Antonella and their Land Rover TD5, Paolo Solari Bozzi traveled across Zambia, penetrating into some of the lesser-known areas of this fascinating country, including the remote Bangwelu swamps where the locals had hardly ever come across a European visitor. Using mechanical medium-format cameras and wide-angle lenses, Paolo depicts, in about 120 black-and-white pictures developed in his own darkroom, some aspects of the lives of Zambians at work—be they fishermen, harvesters, road workers, miners or shopkeepers, without forgetting the innate beauty of a landscape captured in photographs taken from above. This book follows the author’s first work, published in 2013 as Namibia Sun Pictures, and is further testimony to his love of, and admiration for, the poetry of Southern Africa and its peoples. There may be struggle in people’s daily lives but their spirit beguiles and their souls are free.
• An evocative, resonant celebration of the landscape and the people of Zambia in a beautiful, large-format coffee-table book • A wonderful gift for anyone intrigued by the people and cultures of Africa. Born in Rome in 1957, Paolo Solari Bozzi has dual Italian and Swiss citizenship. He currently lives in Switzerland. A lawyer and investment banker by training, in 2010 he installed a new, large and well-equipped darkroom as part of the process of turning his passion into a pivotal part of his life.

s a fashion photographer in the 1970s Rauzier longed to break free from the constraints of advertising and film photography. With his “Hyperphotos” he strove to capture “the panorama and the macro view all at once, to stop time and to have the possibility of viewing all the details of a static image.” Rauzier uses thousands of high-resolution close-up views and includes them into his large compositions, maintaining the focus and sharpness of the smallest detail. Rauzier carefully composes each work from elements and images he has collected over many years, working in some ways more like a painter than a photographer, creating his own supernatural man-made world. Using digital technology, he cuts, moves, and constructs buildings, gardens, animals, and many other objects, carefully collected during long photographic sessions to inspire a new fantastic landscape, a capricious picture, or a baroque masterpiece. He strives to transform the world according to his dreams, wishes and anxieties, and to recreate the magic and secrecy of ancient legends and stories using 21st century media.

abriele Tinti has composed the last words of ordinary people who chose to commit suicide into a collection, a single, long, painful, moving poem of reality. Their words have been organized by the author into a kind of collective epitaph and faithfully recorded without any kind of alteration, freeing them of any pathetic attempt at identifying, fiction, or literary affectation. They are lethal, terrible, lucid words written as a shout, a scream, in serenity, with awareness, at peace; words that contain all the terrible complexity of life. In being last words, the end of all communication, of every vital impulse, they testify to the most authentic difficulty of being men.
• A raw, essential, and real representation of the experience of death. • The book contains an essay by Derrick de Kerchove and is enriched by pictures of people who died by suicide, taken from the scandalous series “The Morgue” by Andres Serrano. • The last words of suicides: a tragic song of lives come to an end. • A song of blood and despair, wisdom and awareness, flesh and spirit. Gabriele Tinti is an Italian writer and poet.

Cleopatra keeps arousing irresistible curiosity and interest even today. Why? Who really was the last queen of Egypt?
C
leopatra VII Thea Philopator, Egypt’s last queen who committed suicide in 30 BC to avoid falling into the hands of Octavian, made an indelible mark on her age. Not particularly beautiful but seductive, intelligent, and resolute, she was brilliant, learned, and refined. She based her strength on her free and independent personality. A skilled politician who attempted to bring Egypt back into the political limelight, she took active part in the plans of Caesar and, subsequently, Marc Antony. She was the most famous queen in Antiquity, and her role in culture and politics was so important that it is hard to find in the centuries that followed. Her fame has crossed literature, with ups and downs: while Dante condemns her to the circle of the lustful and Boccaccio calls her “the whore of the Kings of the Orient”, for William Shakespeare, who celebrates her in his tragedy Antony and Cleopatra, she was a fragile woman with a tragic fate. With over four hundred works from 3000 BC to today, from the most prestigious museums worldwide, this volume views the short but intense life of the “Queen of the Nile,” in a biography where myth and reality intertwine with art, literature, and cinema, covering the myth of Cleopatra also through the eighteenth century up to today, displaying costumes and frames from Hollywood blockbusters that consecrated Cleopatra’s legend thanks to the stunning performance of Elizabeth Taylor.

Twentieth-century American society wittily and ironically portrayed by a great artist
N
orman Rockwell (1894-1978), one of the most popular American artists of the past century, has often been regarded as a simple illustrator and his work identified with the covers of the Saturday Evening Post. He is, instead, a total artist. An acute observer of human nature and talented storyteller, Rockwell captured America’s evolving society in small details and nuances, portraying scenes of the everyday life of ordinary people and presenting a personal and often idealised interpretation of the American identity. His images offered a reassuring visual haven in a period of epoch-making transformation that led to the birth of the modern American society. The art of Norman Rockwell entered the homes of millions of Americans for over fifty years, illustrating the Roaring Twenties, the Depression, World War II, and the 1950s and 1960s. His works mirror aspects of the life of average Americans with precise realism and often in a humorous light.
• The book is realised in collaboration with the Norman Rockwell Museum of Stockbridge (Massachusetts). • All the original works are drawn from the permanent collection of the Norman Rockwell Museum. Danilo Eccher has been Director of GAM Galleria civica d’arte moderna e contemporanea of Turin since 2009. B
orn in Dublin, Ireland, in 1945, Sean Scully has gained international prominence as one of the most admired contemporary abstract painters today. Fusing the traditions of European painting with the distinct character of American abstraction, Scully’s great achievement is the reinvigoration of abstract painting with the metaphorical, the philosophical and the sublime combined with the earthy tangibility of paint. Focussing on the works realised in the latest seven years, this volume is constructed on a dualism between two conflicting accounts. On the one hand, the light of architecture (Doric) and on the other that of natural landscape (Landline): the geometrical composition of the Doric series of works is justaposed to the overlapping of natural horizons of the Landlines. Elected a Royal Academician in 2013, Scully has been shortlisted for the Turner Prize twice, in 1989 and in 1993. He lives and works in New York, Barcelona, and Munich. A new monograph dedicated to the great Latin American artist, gathering all his paintings made in the last thirty years
I’m a painter of the old guard. I love painting, brushes, colors and palettes, and the smell of turpentine. I do my works using my hands. Artists, today, don’t really know what they are missing. Fernando Botero Botero has gained international fame, capturing the whimsy of life by painting corpulent and sometimes comical figures. The dilation of his subjects gives the figures an abstract, unreal, and even grotesque dimension. Studies in beauty and terror, Botero’s monumental figures can be sensual, and many are filled with pain and sorrow. This monograph presents the paintings realised in the last thirty years and created using his own unique language, which is a distinguishing feature of his work and an extraordinary blend of Latin American tradition and European painting.
• The selection documents the artist’s career to date and a survey of Botero’s key works. Rudy Chiappini art critic and historian, has been director of the Modern Art Museum of Lugano (Switzerland) for over twenty years, curating exhibitions dedicated to Modigliani, Munch, Chagall, among the others.

Spanning more than forty-five years, this volume traces the theme of suspension throughout Bourgeois’s long career
A
long with a group of drawings from the 1940s, in which pendulous forms are delineated in black ink, the selection of works presented in this volume demonstrate the myriad ways in which Louise Bourgeois approached material, form, and scale. They also affirm the various readings of Bourgeois’s work, whether formal, psychological, biographical, or experiential. For Bourgeois, the sculptures’ suspension is an expression of the psyche; as she stated: “Horizontality is a desire to give up, to sleep. Verticality is an attempt to escape. Hanging and floating are states of ambivalence.”

cheggi’s dazzling work developed in postwar Milan, an effervescent and international artistic context, enriched by the crucial presence of Lucio Fontana, and of experimental artists from the new Italian generation: Piero Manzoni, Enrico Castellani, Agostino Bonalumi, Dadamaino, Gianni Colombo. From Art Brut to Art without Boundaries A Century of Fascination through the Eyes of Hans Prinzhorn, Jean Dubuffet, Harald Szeemann edited by Carine Fol
Specifications size 9 x 11 in. (23 x 28 cm) 192 pages 80 colour illustrations paperback ISBN 978-88-572-2748-1 £ 29.95, $ 45.00, Can. $ 45.00

his volume explores, from an historical perspective, the development and increasing interest towards an art created outside the boundaries of official culture. Through the works and thoughts of three protagonists of the Outsider art, Hans Prinzhorn (1886–1933), Jean Dubuffet (1901–1981), and Harald Szeemann (1933– 2005), the catalogue attempts to portray the evolution of the perception of oeuvres that had no contact with the mainstream art world. The curator Carine Fol proposes a dynamic approach based on the dialogue between art and its limits, where discriminations and oppositions are overtaken by a universal message of art that at the same time respects multiple identities. Carine Fol, art historian, has been artistic director of the CENTRALE for Contemporary Art in Brussels since 2012.

he volume offers the possibility to trace thirteen years in the evolution of Katrin Fridriks with a focus on her latest and most innovative works, paintings, and shows. Born in 1974 in Reykjavik (Iceland), Katrin Fridriks is an abstract conceptual painter, living and working in Luxembourg. She fuses the natural energies of her native Iceland with an explosive, however organic, abstract expressionism and Japanese calligraphy signs, filtered through installations and architectural compositions. Based on an endless exercise on matter and technique, Katrin Fridriks’s recent works include perspective studies of her black-and-white series (Gene&Ethics and Stendhal Syndrome) and of the metallic series Riding Awareness. The progressive enlargement of her drippings producing unique zoom effects is like macro photography into her paintings. By creating these new perspectives, Katrin Fridriks’s work brings an innovative dimension to abstraction.
editorial coordination Paola Gribaudo; texts by N. Medovoy, T. Tweeten, V. Komar, A. Traubner, O. Salamatina, and J. Cauman Naum Medovoy’s career spans four decades. A self-taught artist, he was mostly a documentary filmmaker until he began printing stills from his films, applying oil sticks and black and white inks to their surfaces. Medovoy’s photodocumentary collage paintings are rooted in his childhood memories and previous work. It is this appeal of Medovoy’s work—which straddles the line between beauty and grotesqueness—that gives it its lasting influence and afterlife, that “grips” our throat; or, as George Stevens once declared in talking about film, that bounces off the page and into the viewer’s mind, like something alive and changing. The same thing can be said about Medovoy’s art; it lasts with you long after you’ve left it.

Sakti Burman. A Private Universe edited by Rosa Maria Falvo texts by Professor Brijinder Nath Goswamy and Rosa Maria Falvo This beautiful and definitive monograph showcases the enchanting work of Indian master painter Sakti Burman. Legends, family, and Indian gods meet and mingle in Sakti Burman’s private, kaleidoscopic universe. Burman is one of India’s pioneering painters, who was born in 1935 in Kolkata and grew up in what is now Bangladesh. This monograph is the definitive publication illustrating the evolution of the artist’s prolific paintings, drawings, and watercolours, contextualizing his lifelong exploration into alternative ways of seeing. Burman’s colourful figures hark back to a kind of ancient “lost paradise,” but also sustain a fresh and irrepressible faith in the beauty and sensibilities of Mother Nature alongside a hopeful human spirit.

Rafael Megall. Paintings 2006–2014 Demetrio Paparoni with an interview by Elio Cappuccio The first monograph devoted to the Armenian artist, from the earliest works to the present day. Rafael Megall’s paintings embody Armenia’s new spirit: in his work, the modernity of composition coexists with symbols, signs and images deriving from ancient Armenian culture. From his contemporary point of view, the artist dialogues with signs inspired by reliefs from the ancient Armenian churches, therefore traditional figures of medieval bestiaries are woven together with universal themes, to attain a depiction that deals with the relationship between man and animal.

Jan Fabre Tribute to Hiëronymus Bosch in Congo. Tribute to Belgian Congo with an introduction by Eckhard Schneider Specifications size 91/2 x 12 in. (24 x 30 cm) 2 volumes, 260 pages 110 colour illustrations hardcover with slipcase ISBN 978-88-572-2300-1 £ 55.00, $ 95.00, Can. $ 95.00
This two-volume edition presents an overview of the two grand series of mosaics—Tribute to Belgian Congo and Tribute to Hiëronymus Bosch in Congo—where the artist again grapples artistically with his country’s colonial past. All works from both series impress by their size, but above all by the use of millions of jewel beetle wing cases. With the various colour tones of this iridescent material, Fabre takes us into an indeterminate zone, between Paradise and the Belgian Congo. The work is inspired by the enslavement of millions of Congolese and the atrocities committed against them as well as the greed of the colonialists, who stole as much as possible of the natural riches the country had to offer.
Inside Carol Rama Maria Cristina Mundici and Bepi Ghiotti Specifications size 91/2 x 11 in. (24 x 28 cm) 192 pages, 83 colour and 20 b/w illustrations hardcover ISBN 978-88-572-2380-3 £ 48.00, $ 80.00, Can. $ 80.00
A photographic book on the museum house of one of the most eccentric female artists of the 20th century. W ith over a hundred photographs, this volume explores the rooms, objects and light of the apartment in which Carol Rama has been living and working for over seventy years, retracing the personal life and artistic career of the great painter. The book is intended to disclose a secret place, in which the artist has gathered countless mementoes over the years: ones from her family, donated by friends such as Man Ray, Carlo Mollino, and Andy Warhol, or collected in memory of special situations or people. While apparently scattered, these objects have actually been arranged with great care.

The first major monograph devoted to one of Tunisia’s leading artists and a notable contemporary artist in the Arab world. Nja Mahdaoui (Tunis, 1937) is a visual artist who considers himself “an explorer of signs” and has been described as a “choreographer of letters.” His work, inspired by Arabic calligraphy, is remarkably innovative as the aesthetic dimension of letters brings forth a strong sense of the poetic. These works arrest us with their astounding ryhthm and rich abstract composition, actually devoid of any textual meaning. Famous for his meticulous use of ink on parchment, Mahdaoui stresses the visual impact of his works, which he refers to as “calligrams” or “graphemes.”

In a new exclusive slipcase, the prestigious four-volume series covering the fundamental events and pivotal works of international art in the twentieth century
T
his series offers a complete, up-to-date survey of the artistic culture of the twentieth century through an original, transversal and interdisciplinary analysis. This special edition of the series gathers the four volumes into an exclusive slipcase showcasing a 3D reproduction of a masterpiece by James Rosenquist. The books provide an extraordinary repertory of images and a vast source of information, enriched through “focus on” windows and technical information by experts in the field. The essays investigate and analyse in chronological order the transformations of the world’s artistic culture, the major personalities and the different movements that have characterized the development of modern and contemporary art. Roughly 1700 pages and a considerable number of illustrations provide a broad and composite overview of movements, artists, works and cultural phenomena, in an extraordinary publication that examines in depth the tendencies of modern and contemporary art.
• Ample space is devoted to the critical definitions of contemporary art, the art market and the new way of collecting, to the relationship between art and politics, and to the new, confusing frontiers of photography. • Major chapters are followed, in alphabetical order, by the biographies of artists accompanied by their most significant works. Valerio Terraroli teaches History of Modern Art at the University of Verona. 56

This history of photography, marking an ideal continuity with the “Art of the 20th century” series, responds to the need for accurate information for the general public and supplies more specialised investigations of the medium, offering an international overview
T
he series offers a complete, up-to-date survey of photography through an original and transversal analysis. This special edition gathers four volumes in an exclusive slipcase inspired by the oldest surviving camera photograph, View from the Window at Le Gras, created by Nicéphore Niépce in 1826. The books provide an extraordinary repertory of images and a vast source of information, enriched through “focus on” windows and technical information, synoptic tables and a summary glossary. The essays, by some leading international experts, investigate and analyze in chronological order the transformations of the world’s photographic culture and the major figures that have shaped the development of photography. With a chronological division into four main periods (The Origins 1839–1890; A New Vision of the World 1891–1940; From the Press to the Museum 1941–1980; The Contemporary Era 1981–2013), this will be the most authoritative set on the subject.
• The complete history of photography from the origins to the present. • An extraordinary repertory of images. • Essays by international leading esperts. Former director of the Galleria Civica in Modena, Walter Guadagnini is a curator and professor of history of contemporary art at the Accademia delle Belle Arti in Bologna. He is also commissaire unique for the Italian section of “Paris Photo”.

Daido Moriyama in Color Now, and Never Again Filippo Maggia
For the first time, the colour photographs realised by Daido Moriyama, one of the leading figures in contemporary Japanese photography along with Nobuyoshi Araki, Yasumasa Morimura, and Shomei Tomatsu
C
onsidered one of the great masters of contemporary Japanese photography, Daido Moriyama is always on the road, a lone traveller whose blackand-white images recount visions and worlds hidden just beneath the surface of reality. This book shows for the first time over 250 colour photographs taken between the late 1960s and the 1980s. A constant flow of images that is often frenetic or suddenly suspended, following the rhythm of an unfettered, restless life spent travelling the roads of the world. Daido Moriyama (born 1938) is one of the most important living photographers and photobook makers. His career began in Tokyo in the 1960s, where he formed part of the influential Provoke group, which published some of the most innovative avant-garde photography made in post-war Japan. In a career spanning over fifty years, Moriyama is best known for his wild, blurred, grainy style of black and white photography, capturing urban experience on the streets of Tokyo and New York. However, there are many sides to his practice and he also works with colour, polaroid, silkscreen and installation.

A complete overview of the practice of Hiroshi Sugimoto, considered by many to be one of the most authoritative figures of international contemporary photography
I retraced the paths which photography’s two inventors Daguerre and Talbot followed en route to their invention. For almost 180 years, it is photography that has determined how mankind sees its own history and perceives the world. Our collective history has been stopped, saved, and repeatedly scrutinized to the point of banalization. History, one might say, is not truly history until photography has thoroughly trivialized it. The day when mankind will realize its deep-seated desire to bring time to a stop is coming inexorably closer. Time exists only through the agency of human perception. Only when mankind vanishes from the earth can we truly claim to have halted time’s progress. It is not long now. Hiroshi Sugimoto Hiroshi Sugimoto was born in Tokyo in 1948, lives and works between New York and Tokyo. A multifaceted artist, developed his artistic practice through photography, often associated with sculptural objects, architecture and exhibition design experiments. Often addressed to the interrelationship between art, history, science and religion, his photographic research combines Eastern meditative ideas with elements of Western culture. In over thirty years of work, the artist has captivated audiences around the world with his impeccable black and white images.
• The volume includes some pictures from the series Lightning Fields. A special section is devoted to the Sugimoto monographs published from 1977 to the recent ones, Dioramas and On the beach, printed in 2014. Filippo Maggia see on previous page. 60

Sven Marquardt Götterdämmerung edited by Enrico Debandi, Eugenio Viola
This volume presents for the first time in such a thorough way the works of Sven Marquardt, born in East Berlin in 1962
A
n overview of the photographic works by Sven Marquardt (1962), one of Berlin’s most famous and unlikeliest symbols. Former “clandestine” photographer and now undisputed protagonist of the reunited German capital’s underground art scene and front-man at the Berghain, Berlin’s most famous club, with its ten-year history known worldwide for its uniqueness. Through Marquardt’s unmistakable style, poised between intimacy and voyeurism, a selection of more than sixty photographs tells the story of Berlin’s social and cultural evolution and transformations from the raging years of the Cold War to the hedonism of today. Sven Marquardt began his career in the early 1980s, publishing the first pictures on the periodicals Der Sonntag and Das Magazin. In parallel with his work as fashion photographer, he began to document the underground scene of East Berlin. His pictures were displayed in numerous solo and group exhibitions in Germany and abroad.

reGeneration3 edited by Anne Lacoste and Lydia Dorner
A survey of emerging young photography in the third appointment with reGeneration
R
eGeneration—an innovative international project devoted to the emerging phtographic scene launched in 2005—represents one of the hallmarks of the Musée de l’Elysée in Lausanne. Since 2005 the original exhibition was successfully shown in 12 countries, 24 cities, 25 venues across North America, Europe, and Asia. Most of the authors represented in the first edition of the exhibition have already become recognised photography artists. Although many similar projects have seen the day since then, the Musée de l’Elysée decided to embark on a third edition for its 30th anniversary, one that would focus on the multifaceted nature of photography. Following the success of the previous two editions, reGeneration3 brings together fifty artists with twenty-five different nationalities, representing some forty art institutions. Their work is distinguished by their multidisciplinarity, ranging from printing and photographic series, artists’ books, multimedia installations, videos, projections, films, and performances to onsite installations.

T
he fashion archive of Enrico Quinto and Paolo Tinarelli has been painstakingly assembled over the last twenty years and traces the international evolution of costume from the mid-19th century to the present day. This quintessential volume on Italian Style narrates the development of fashion through around three hundred dresses, chronologically ordered and selected from an international collection of over six thousand pieces, enriched by commentary by historians, journalists and fashion designers, but also by photography, film and personal testimony: a concrete resource for historians of costume, students and passionates. T
hree decades of fashion brought together in one Collection, worn as originally intended by the Collector herself, and developed over five years by established fashion and portrait photographer Frederic Aranda: this is Electric Fashion. But why is it electric? It is the story of how the Collector, Christine Suppes, blazed an indelible trail into online fashion editorial whilst developing a unique collection in the heart of Silicon Valley. Electric Fashion is essential viewing, punctuated with academic perspective, comprehensive technical references, and archival text from the collection’s accompanying website, fashionlines.com. This timeless tome boasts a double vantage point; on the one hand, each garment is photographed in a studio setting to enhance critical academic understanding, whilst on the other, worn by the collector herself to depict the garments as they were originally intended to be worn. The finished product is a 360 degree view of fashion, from historical, cultural, and practical standpoints.

Glass from Finland in the Bischofberger Collection edited by Kaisa Koivisto and Pekka Korvenmaa
A new volume from the series “Le Stanze del Vetro” dedicated to Finnish glass design Specifications size 91/2 x 11 in. (23 x 28 cm) 416 pages, 260 colour and b/w illustrations hardcover ISBN 978-88-572-2761-0 £ 48.00, $ 75.00, Can. $ 75.00 Exhibition Schedule Venice, Island of San Giorgio Maggiore 13 April – 2 August 2015
O
ver 300 works from the Bischofberger Collection celebrate the fascination and brilliance of glass art and document the excellence of Finnish and international design through masterpieces by leading 20thcentury Finnish designers: Aino and Alvar Aalto, Arttu Brummer, Kaj Franck, Göran Hongell, Gunnel Nyman, Timo Sarpaneva, Oiva Toikka and Tapio Wirkkala. Very rare objects, often one-off pieces, which Christina and Bruno Bischofberger have passionately and discerningly collected over the last forty years. The unique nature of these objects highlights the original intentions of each artist or designer and makes this collection of Finnish glass one of the most important worldwide. Published on the occasion of the exhibition in Venice and edited by Kaisa Koivisto, chief curator at the Finnish Glass Museum in Riihimäki, Finland, and Pekka Korvenmaa, professor at the Aalto University School of Arts, Design and Architecture in Helsinki, the volume presents the greatest examples of a century-long glass production, with all its declinations and variations: shapes and objects that have rewritten the history of both Scandinavian and international design. Abundantly documenting the various historical periods, the works selected are laid out in an elegant itinerary that ranges from crystal items with the typical hues of the early 1930s up to the more colourful, at times even “psychedelic”, creations of the 1970s in a celebration of timeless designs of the very highest standard. Professor Pekka Korvenmaa teaches design and culture at the Aalto University School of Arts, Design and Architecture di Helsinki. Kaisa Koivisto is Chief curator at the Finnish Glass Museum of Riihimäki.

The Lopresto Collection represents a cross-section of the history of automobiles, design, Italy, and its creativity
U
nique pieces, chassis no. 1, or strictly Italian prototypes, on which the greatest designers and coachbuilders from the past have experimented pioneering solutions: choices that foretell future fashion phenomena and stylistic canons. The Lopresto Collection is unlike all others: it comprises only Italian models, one-off specimens, prototypes, special editions, and models made in extremely limited numbers, often personalised to match the customer’s specific requests. This is why it is the most important collection in Italy and one of the most prestigious in the world. Frequently, they are masterpieces that have long been forgotten, but through skilled restoration Lopresto has salvaged their bygone splendour, because he, an architect by profession and collector by passion, is in fact an automobile archeologist in love with his vehicles.

The leading movements, major figures, works and ideas that shaped the architecture of the twentieth century, one of the richest and most complex periods in human history
A
360-degree review of the architectural developments of the twentieth century, Architecture. Movements and Trends from the 19th Century to the Present retraces the history of the best-known groups and movements, as well as underlining the powerful influence of trends such as Totalitarian Architecture, Tropical Architecture, Social-Realist Architecture, Blob Architecture and Neo-Vernacular, all of which played a significant role in the rise and evolution of modern trends in the discipline. In tackling a highly complex century characterised by the rise of globalization, this exhaustive overview does not confine itself to analysing architectural trends in Western countries but expands its field of vision to include world architecture as well. A comprehensive study and research tool, the book is divided into chapters devoted to each individual movement, with a selection of critical essays and photographs of the most important works and projects. Lastly, a brief thematic bibliography and other research tools make Architecture an indispensable instrument for students of architecture, design and engineering, as well as anyone with a passion for the subject.
• Each entry has been written by specialists in the field in a clear, analytical style which makes the history of architecture accessible to non-specialists as well. The architect and critic Luca Molinari has been associate professor of History of Contemporary Architecture at the University of Naples since 2003, and guest professor at the Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts (China). He published different volumes in the field of architectural history and theory. 74

Sergei Tchoban. Architecture Drawings edited by Luca Molinari introductions by Santiago Calatrava and Massimiliano Fuksas
The architectural drawings by one of the most interesting figures in the new generation of architects in contemporary Russia
T
his monograph presents the architecture drawings of Sergei Tchoban, including architectural fantasies as well as images of existing architecture from his travels all around Europe. Sergey Kuznetsov. Architecture Drawings edited by Luca Molinari. introductions by Santiago Calatrava and Massimiliano Fuksas
The volume reveals the great importance of drawings in Sergey Kuznetsov’s architectural practice
T
his volume devoted to Kuznetsov’s architectural drawings makes a valuable contribution to understanding the work and vision of one of the most interesting protagonists of the new generation of architects from present-day Russia. The practice of drawing is seen to be crucial to the way of thinking about architecture and of observing the contemporary city. It is also a source of inspiration and research, through drawing from life views and images of the many places visited in recent years, which become material for reflection and offer suggestions for metropolitan scenarios of the near future. Sergey Kuznetsov was born in 1977 in Moscow. In 2001, he graduated from the Moscow Architectural Institute. Kuznetsov has taken part in various architecture exhibitions, including international ones. In 2010 and 2012, he was the co-curator of the Russian pavilion at the Venice Architecture Biennale, which for the first time was awarded with an “Honourable Mention” prize by the jury in 2012.

or architecture, the Tel Aviv Museum of Art’s Paul and Herta Amir Building provides a new spatial and tectonic paradigm; for museology, it represents a new approach for resolving tensions between divergent cultural agendas. The Tel Aviv Museum of Art is an unusual synthesis of two opposing paradigms of the contemporary museum: the museum of neutral white boxes dedicated to aesthetic contemplation and the museum of architectural spectacle, a site of public excitation. A comprehensive compendium of drawings, photographs, and texts, this book assesses the building within several of the most important discursive contexts of architectural and aesthetic theory. Preston Scott Cohen is the Gerald M. McCue Professor of Architecture at Harvard University Graduate School of Design. Dr. Eran Neuman earned a Ph.D. and an M.A. in architecture at the University of California, Los Angeles.

99 Domes Imam Mohammed bin Abdul Wahab Mosque edited by Ibrahim Jaidah
The history and the architecture of the extraordinary “Mosque of Domes”, as it is commonly called because of its 99 domes
A
photographic survey of the Imam Mohammed bin Abdul Wahab Mosque in Doha, Qatar, this volume retraces the story of the building and the architectural elements of the religious complex, projected in full respect of the traditional Qatari architecture. Although this extravagant mosque has a very modern feel with crisp lines and large open outdoor spaces, it preserves some of the traditional features of the Gulf region’s architectural past. The Imam Mohammed bin Abdul Wahab Mosque in Doha is Qatar’s largest mosque, covering a total area of 175,164 sqm. On the whole the mosque can hold a congregation of 30,000 people.

Milano Porta Nuova Italy rises edited by Luca Molinari and Kelly Russell Catella
Creativity and innovation, urban growth and experimentation, present and future of architecture in Milan
A
fresh face in the urban landscape, the architectural transformation of an important area in the centre of Milan represents an occasion for an experimental research in the city. The volume describes the process leading to the definition of the Porta Nuova area in all its phases. It brings together the voices of all the different actors who contributed to the project: producers, developers, public administrators, and all the planners who worked on the area—Cesar Pelli, Stefano Boeri, Cino Zucchi, Michele De Lucchi, Cucinella Architects, and the Kpf Studio, among many others. With great attention to detail and to more technical aspects, the volume illustrates a crucial step in the transformation of Milan, which is increasingly set to become a point of reference at the crossroads between European and international models of urban development. The book is fully illustrated with color photographs, plans, and visualizations.

A vast catalogue dedicated to Leonardo’s entire oeuvre on the occasion of the largest exhibition ever realised in Italy on the genius, symbol of Italian art and creativity
Exhibition organised by Skira Milan, Palazzo Reale 16 April – 19 July 2015
E
dited by two leading international specialists with the assistance of a prestigious academic committee and published to coincide with the biggest Leonardo exhibition ever held in Italy (produced by Skira and Comune di Milano/Palazzo Reale), Leonardo da Vinci 1452–1519. The Design of the World illustrates the many talents of Leonardo – painter and draughtsman, scientist, musician and inventor – and his ability to combine the arts and sciences. The book and exhibition are truly unprecedented due to the authority of the curators, the academic precision combined with educational intent, the number of works on display including paintings, drawings and manuscripts, and the exceptional loans from private collections and the world’s most important museums and libraries, such as the Louvre, the National Gallery of Art in Washington, the Musei Vaticani, the Royal Collection at Windsor and the Pinacoteca Ambrosiana. The book features numerous masterpieces, including a large number of paintings, more than one hundred drawings and various extraordinary codices and incunabula on loan from some of the greatest collections in the world: major works such as the Dreyfus Madonna from the National Gallery of Art in Washington and three masterpieces from the Louvre – the Belle Ferronnière, the Annunciation and the St John the Baptist – as well as thirty wonderful sheets from the Codex Atlanticus and thirty drawings from the English Royal Collection. Pietro C. Marani, professor of modern art history at the Milan Polytechnic, was codirector of the restoration work for The Last Supper and co-author of the exhibition catalogues on Leonardo at the Louvre and the Metropolitan Museum in 2013. Maria Teresa Fiorio teaches museum studies at the Milan “Statale” University. 80

he volume, starting from the celebrated and fascinating Portrait of a Lady from the Poldi Pezzoli museum in Milan, one of the greatest masterpieces of Florentine portraiture from the latter half of the 15th century, investigates the art of the Pollaiuolo brothers: Antonio, a goldsmith, painter and sculptor, and the most famous, and Piero, a painter. Based on in-depth scientific analyses and researches conducted on the methods of execution and materials used for the wide range of different works issued from the Pollaiuolo brothers’ workshop, the volume presents paintings, drawings, engravings, sculptures, bronzes, and objects of applied art.

Bramantino The Renaissance in Lombardy edited by Mauro Natale
This veritable reference work on Bramantino emphasises his pivotal role in Northern Italy’s Renaissance
T
his volume by Mauro Natale devoted to Bartolomeo Suardi called Bramantino, one of the most emblematic personalities of the northern Italian Renaissance, covers the whole of the artist’s cultural and creative trajectory. It follows a logical chronological sequence, which is also novel compared to the proposals put forward by scholars to date. Beginning with his collaboration with the architect and painter Donato Bramante – from whom he took the surname by which he is still known today – it concludes with his last known works, including the Flight into Egypt in the Santuario della Madonna del Sasso at Orselina in Ticino. Alongside illustrations of Bramantino’s masterpieces there are works by artists who were Bramantino’s contemporaries, first and foremost Bernardo Zenale, and by those who were the heirs of his artistic legacy, such as Bernardino Luini and Gaudenzio Ferrari.

ibetan culture and artistic tradition were virtually unknown in the West until the eight major expeditions led by Giuseppe Tucci between 1926 and 1948. This catalogue retraces his travels through period photographs and his contributions to the study of Tibetan art. In addition to Tucci’s photographs, it presents a collection of paintings from the eleventh to the eighteenth centuries, enabling readers to discover Tibetan art with particular reference to compositional style, iconography, and the reading of a tangka.
• A comprehensive survey of the art of Tibetan painting. • The book enables the reader to admire the thangkas painted by monks or secular artists primarily for Tibetan monastic communities.
• The selection of thangkas shown (in many cases after being restored to their original splendour) is exceptional in both quantitative and qualitative terms. Deborah Klimburg-Salter is an art historian and professor for non-European art history at the Department of Art History of the University of Vienna.

Teatro alla Scala The Illustrated History Carlo Lanfossi
Specifications size 11 x 121/2 in. (28 x 32.7 cm) 240 pages, 196 colour and 47 b/w illustrations hardcover ISBN 978-88-572-2695-8 £ 60.00, $ 100.00, Can. $ 100.00
The theatre’s history from its origins to the present day, richly illustrated in colour
L
a Scala is “the world’s number one theatre, because it is the one that gives the maximum musical enjoyment”, wrote Stendhal on 10 November 1816. La Scala had opened in 1778 with the opera Europa riconosciuta by Antonio Salieri, but it had already won itself a prestige that it would subsequently maintain throughout its whole existence. Most of Italy’s greatest operatic artists, and many of the finest singers from other nations, too, have appeared at La Scala during the past 200 years. Today, the theatre is still recognised as one of the leading opera and ballet theatres in the world. Through six sections (The beginnings; The first half of the nineteenth-century; The second half of the nineteenth-century; The first half of the twentieth-century; The second half of the twentieth-century; La Scala in the new millennium) this volume tells the fascinating story of the building.
• A chronology of the major operas, composers and players from 1778 to today. • An invaluable guide for both amateur opera fans and aficionados. • A lavish book with impressive pairings of text and illustrations. Carlo Lanfossi is the author of several essays on the history of music and contributing editor of Il Giornale della musica.
