At the Skirball MAR/APR 2018

PRESIDENT’S GREETING Beginning in April and throughout the summer, the Skirball Cultural Center will present the exhibition Leonard Bernstein at 100 (see pp. 8–9), exploring the life and legacy of the iconic American composer, conductor, educator, and social activist. Organized by the GRAMMY Museum®, the exhibition is part of an international celebration of Bernstein’s centennial— symphony, opera, chamber music, film, dance performances, and educational programs across Southern California and around the world. Many of my own generation were introduced to Leonard Bernstein by the medium of television. The maestro’s Young People’s Concerts were unforgettable events. Here was a gifted teacher mentoring young talents, encouraging them to pursue their dreams. A pioneer of music education and a natural media star, Bernstein on screen was worldly yet kind, charismatic yet gentle. For me and my immigrant family, he embodied an American spirit of hope, joy, and possibility. Decades later, Isaac Stern, who was an early pioneer in the creation of the Skirball, invited me to meet Leonard Bernstein at a private luncheon in New York City. To my delight, the cultural icon I had met on TV was, in person, warm, engaging, and vibrant. His joie de vivre was irresistible. We invite you to share a measure of that joie de vivre here at the Skirball. Come join us to explore and celebrate Leonard Bernstein at 100. We assure you an experience of art and culture that lifts the heart and the spirit.

Uri D. Herscher

Founding President and CEO Skirball Cultural Center

OUR MISSION The Skirball Cultural Center is a place of meeting guided by the Jewish tradition of welcoming the stranger and inspired by the American democratic ideals of freedom and equality. We welcome people of all communities and generations to participate in cultural experiences that celebrate discovery and hope, foster human connections, and call upon us to help build a more just society.

ART: THE MAJESTIC LANDSCAPE

The “landscape” in visual art has always symbolized emotional, ideological, and spiritual yearnings. From Chinese brush painting to the Italian Renaissance, depictions of mountains, water, and trees convey a desire for order and peace in a turbulent world. By the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, landscapes became a vehicle for heart-pounding romanticism, shimmering impressionism, and individual voice. Take a journey with Leonardo da Vinci, J.M.W. Turner, Camille Pissarro, Paul Cézanne, Georgia O’Keeffe, David Hockney, and other artists who redefined not simply scenes of nature, but our relationship to beauty and the sublime. NOAH’S ARK AT THE SKIRBALL

TM

It takes a team to bring Noah’s Ark’s whimsically handcrafted animals to life. Take, All for example, the gangly pink flamingo(pictured on facing page). Sporting flyages swatter feet, stilt-like legs of bamboo, a handbag for a body, and a lanky neck made from spools of thread, the f lamingo requires not one but two puppeteers working in sync. As they wander the galleries, they must sense and respond to one another’s movements and behaviors. Not merely a thing of beauty, their lifelike grace demonstrates a theme echoed throughout the galleries: that only by working together can we build a better, more hopeful future. On your next visit, look out for a puppet encounter and think about the many ways you can support family and friends both on and off the Ark! All Noah’s Ark ticketholders are assigned an entry time permitting up to ninety minutes in the galleries. Advance tickets to Noah’s Ark are highly recommended on weekends and during school breaks, including for Members. Tickets on FREE Thursdays are first-come, first-served only (no advance tickets), subject to availability. Last entry at 4:00 p.m. Children must be accompanied by an adult. Minimum adult/child ratio: 1/4. Note: On April 29, limited one-hour tickets to Noah’s Ark will be available on a first-come, first-served basis only.

MEMBER STORY “On our recent Skirball visit, our family felt right at home. We were so welcomed by the Skirball staff and volunteers that we decided to become Members. So you will see us there often! While visiting, a lovely guard named Eli made a paper crane and gave it to our four-year-old. Our daughter was so touched she wrote him a note: ‘Thank you very much for the beautiful crane. It was thoughtful of you to give it to me. I liked talking to you. Love, Lily.’ Thank you, Skirball, for a special afternoon and many more to come.” —Laura Vichinsky and Lily Schneier, new Skirball Members
