At the Skirball NOV/DEC 2019

PRESIDENT’S GREETING Since our public opening in 1996, the Skirball has presented its annual and very popular Hanukkah Festival. Across our campus (which in 1996 was half the size it is today), families gather for story and song, art and dance, potato latkes and jelly donuts—and, above all, the experience of welcome and the celebration of community. In that inaugural year of 1996, we were just beginning to express our mission as an institution dedicated to Jewish values and American democratic ideals. Hanukkah provided a joyous occasion to celebrate both: our dedication (which is the meaning of the Hebrew word hanukkah) to preserving a heritage, and our commitment to the cause of religious freedom. Every year at the Skirball, the ancient Jewish revolt against persecution becomes the opportunity to affirm the power of light to pierce the darkness. Nearly a quarter of a century later, our Hanukkah Festival is more than ever a sharing of light and hope. Once again we will come together with family and friends, sing along to holiday tunes, dance and create art together, and savor tasty treats. In our Museum galleries we will marvel at Hanukkah lamps from across the centuries and around the world. And together we will experience once again the ancient story of how a small but courageous people, against all odds, triumphed over oppression. As we celebrate together, may we reflect upon the deeper meaning of Hanukkah for the world today. Let us rededicate ourselves to the pursuit of liberty for people everywhere. Come join us at this year’s Hanukkah Festival, and join your light to ours.

Uri D. Herscher

Founding President and CEO Skirball Cultural Center

OUR MISSION The Skirball Cultural Center is a place of meeting guided by the Jewish tradition of welcoming the stranger and inspired by the American democratic ideals of freedom and equality. We welcome people of all communities and generations to participate in cultural experiences that celebrate discovery and hope, foster human connections, and call upon us to help build a more just society.

THROUGH A DIFFERENT LENS Stanley Kubrick Photographs Stanley Kubrick (1928–1999), the future director of such classics as 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968) and A Clockwork Orange (1971), was only seventeen when he PUBLIC TOURS sold his first photograph to Look magazine. But the Beginning November 2 photo—featuring a dejected newsstand vendor the Tuesdays, Wednesdays, day after the death of President Franklin D. Roosevelt—showed a sophistication that belied the and Fridays: 1:00–2:00 pm photographer’s young age. Less interested in formal Thursdays, Saturdays, education than lessons of the real world, Kubrick and Sundays: 1:00–2:00 worked for the next five years at Look, where the and 2:30–3:30 pm Manhattan offices proved to be his college, the editors and fellow photographers his professors, and New York City his field of study. Through the camera’s lens, Kubrick learned to be an acute observer of human interactions. Exploring this formative phase in Kubrick’s career, the exhibition Through a Different Lens: Stanley Kubrick Photographs features more than 130 works, both published and unpublished, alongside the final printed issues of Look. Come marvel at these rarely exhibited photographs that reveal the makings of one of cinema’s greatest visual storytellers.

Through March 8, 2020

EL SUENO AMERICANO / THE AMERICAN DREAM Photographs by Tom Kiefer Between 2003 and 2014, while working as a janitor at a Customs and Border Protection station in Ajo, Arizona, Tom Kiefer (b. 1959) was struck by the objects he found in the trash—from water bottles, canned food, and medicine to diaries, CD collections, and English-language flash cards. Once carried by migrants and deemed “potentially lethal” or “non-essential” by Border Patrol agents, these items inspired Kiefer to honor the migrants’ untold stories and preserve traces of human journeys cut short in photographs akin to portraits.

El Sueño Americano | The American Dream presents a selection of more than 100 photographs from Kiefer’s ongoing project, along with a newly recorded video interview between the artist and a person who crossed the border. A take-home guide connects visitors to organizations that provide legal and humanitarian aid to migrants and advocate for a more humane policy at the border.

STORIES FROM THE BORDER Tom Kiefer, Francisco Cantú, and Dora Rodriguez in Conversation

Photographer Tom Kiefer and author Francisco Cantú (The Line Becomes a River: Dispatches from the Border) both worked on the US-Mexico border at the same time: Kiefer as a janitor for Customs and Border Protection and Cantú as a Border Patrol agent. Each felt compelled to share stories from this period: Kiefer through photography and Cantú through memoir writing. In this conversation, they will be joined by migrants’ rights advocate Dora Rodriguez, who crossed the border in 1980. Together, they will reflect on their experiences and their continuing efforts to assist those who are trying to reach the United States. Moderated by Skirball curator Laura Mart. Arrive early to view the exhibitions! The galleries will be open from 6:00 to 7:30 pm. Kiefer’s and Cantú’s respective publications will be available for purchase. A signing follows the program.

FAMILY PAPERS: A SEPHARDIC JOURNEY THROUGH THE TWENTIETH CENTURY An Afternoon with Sarah Abrevaya Stein

For centuries the port city of Salonica was home to the large Levy family. As leading editors and publishers, they chronicled modernity as it was experienced by Sephardic Jews across the Ottoman Empire. The wars of the twentieth century, however, redrew the borders around them, while global migrations cast them in many directions. Award-winning historian Sarah Abrevaya Stein shares the true story of a frayed and diasporic Sephardic Jewish family preserved in thousands of letters. She will be joined in conversation with race and gender scholar Brenda E. Stevenson. Presented in partnership with the UCLA Alan D. Leve Center for Jewish Studies. Books available for purchase. A book signing follows the program.

MEMBER STORY “I love visiting the Skirball with my seven-year-old daughter, Lily. When I was in graduate school, a professor said if we have children that we’d be doing them a disservice if we didn’t expose them to the Skirball’s offerings, and I’m forever grateful for that advice. Lily, just five when we first boarded Noah’s Ark, was smitten with every nook and cranny, and we’ve enjoyed so many exhibitions since. The Skirball team creates dynamic and not-to-be-missed educational opportunities for the community.” —George Miserlis, Skirball Member
