Nov/Dec 2021 Program Guide

NOV/DEC 2021

PRESIDENT’S GREETING I have a confession to make: during Hanukkah last year, I switched out my grandmother’s latkes for store-bought frozen potato pancakes. Every year for as long as I can remember, Hanukkah meant peeling so many potatoes the grated pieces filled the two biggest mixing bowls in my parents’ kitchen and frying them in so much oil the house smelled all the next week. It was my dad who was in charge of the frying, while the rest of us scurried around rotating in new serving plates covered with paper towels and transferring crispy brown latkes from stovetop, to oven, to table. Then came 2020. Hanukkah was just me, my husband, and my son, who refuses to eat potatoes. I just couldn’t fathom all that peeling and frying in the face of our tiny dinner party and my heartache that we were not with our whole family. So I snuck two boxes of frozen latkes into my cart, toasted them up, and ... they were completely delicious. You know what I learned in 2021? That the grocery store stocks latkes in the frozen food aisle all year long. Now every few months we have latkes. And we love them! What felt like this terribly sad loss in 2020, now feels like this unexpected extra celebration in 2021. At the Skirball, we are so thrilled to resume our annual Hanukkah Festival and welcome you back to our campus for music, storytelling, and delicious treats. But last year’s time away from in-person sharing revealed new opportunities for connection and celebration, too. So we also look forward to meeting you online for a cooking class with culinary historian Maite Gomez-Rejón and other virtual gatherings that continue to deliver joy, learning, and meaning. See you there!

Jessie Kornberg President and CEO Skirball Cultural Center

OUR MISSION The Skirball Cultural Center is a place of meeting guided by the Jewish tradition of welcoming the stranger and inspired by the American democratic ideals of freedom and equality. We welcome people of all communities and generations to participate in cultural experiences that celebrate discovery and hope, foster human connections, and call upon us to help build a more just society.

Take Part in Our Essential Values The Skirball mission is deeply rooted in Jewish heritage and inspired by its values. Over time, six of these values have emerged for us as the most vital, lighting our path toward building a better world. Each one is paired below with a select exhibition or program that illuminates the meaning of the value. We hope you’ll join us. Welcome the stranger—Unwind during Open Shabbat, a communal meal with music and mindful meditation that invites people of all cultural and religious backgrounds to participate in Jewish ritual. (see p. 9) Honor memory—Hear chef Pati Jinich discuss her new cookbook, Treasures of the Mexican Table, which brings together iconic dishes that have connected communities and families over hundreds and even thousands of years. (see p. 18) Seek learning—Discover what you have in common with people who lived three thousand years ago at the Discovery Center and Archaeology Dig. (see p. 23) Pursue justice—During the Best of Trek weekend, witness Captain Jean-Luc Picard take the stand to defend android officer Lt. Commander Data’s right to live in the beloved episode “The Measure of a Man.” Then, hear directly from the actor who played Data, Brent Spiner, following the screening. (see pp. 16–17) Build community—Join us for the return of our in-person Hanukkah Festival, bringing the Skirball community together for an afternoon and evening of music, storytelling, and art-making. (see p. 8) Show kindness—During the first screening of our Family Film Series, watch a friendship form between EVE and WALL-E, two robots with very different purposes who team up to save Earth and humankind. (see pp. 20–21) NOV/DEC 2021

Stephanie Mercado, Ana Rodriguez, South East Los Angeles Artist and High School Teacher, 2021. Relief print collage, digital composite, 57 x 29 3/4 in.

EXHIBITIONS SUSTAIN

From Loss to Renewal Through March 20, 2022 View a new poster series by local artist Stephanie Mercado that pays tribute to seven members of LA’s diverse workforce. The individuals featured have all demonstrated strength in the face of COVID-19 and the inequities the pandemic has heightened. Fusing together traditional printmaking and experimental practices, Mercado’s work contains visual references to each subject’s lived experiences. Complementing the posters is a participatory installation that invites visitors to place stones in a collective outdoor display, evoking the Jewish tradition of leaving a stone at a gravesite. These components mark Phases II and III of Sustain, a three-part installation exploring meaningful expressions of grief and resilience. For Phase I, a yahrzeit candle burned in the Skirball lobby, honoring the lives lost to the pandemic. Entry is included with admission to every ticketed Skirball exhibition. Visitors can also make arrangements to experience Sustain free of charge by emailing info@skirball.org or calling (310) 440-4500.

VISIONS AND VALUES

Jewish Life from Antiquity to America Ongoing Explore four thousand years of Jewish experience in this permanent exhibition, which features objects from the Skirball’s renowned collection of Judaica and Americana—one of the largest in the world. Learn how the Jews have survived as a diverse migratory, minority population: through active engagement with the many communities and cultures they’ve encountered throughout their history, while also retaining a core set of values. Newly on view! Moroccan Hanukkah Lamp—The light from this oil-burning Hanukkah lamp once illuminated a Moroccan Jewish home. Until the late 1940s, Morocco was home to more than a quarter-million Jews. Today, most Moroccan Jews and their descendants live in Israel, France, and Canada, as well as the United States. Entry is included with admission to every ticketed Skirball exhibition. Visitors can also make arrangements to experience Visions and Values by emailing info@skirball.org or calling (310) 440-4500. Admission fees apply.
