JAN/FEB 2022
PRESIDENT’S GREETING When the Skirball announced its mission statement, our Founder, Uri D. Herscher, wrote that “by recognizing the precious value of each person, we forge the bonds of a caring community.” This past year, the Skirball marked twenty-five years since opening to the public on April 21, 1996. As I reflect on the impact this institution has made in that time, it is easy to be drawn to the quantitative measures of achievement. Millions of visitors have come through the Museum and attended our programs. Hundreds of thousands of children have participated in our school programs. Thousands of b’nei mitzvah, weddings, proms, and parties have graced these halls. Our mission inspires us to be a place of meeting—and we have been, in abundance! But as I look at the calendar of events in the months ahead, what moves me most is not the frequency, variety, or size of our offerings, but the community they represent. In particular, I am struck that two longtime program collaborators, the band Mostly Kosher and the community organizer and civil rights historian Phil Brown, have chosen to return to the Skirball to debut their new works. Mostly Kosher’s record release party in January and Phil Brown’s book launch in February speak directly to our commitment to Jewish traditions and American democratic ideals. Indirectly, these events speak to the breadth of the community of artists the Skirball supports and the depth of those relationships. The bonds formed in this place—where artists and authors seek audience and welcome—could only be formed thanks to you, our Skirball supporters and visitors. Uri and Skirball colleagues laid the foundation, but you forge the community and fulfill the mission.
Jessie Kornberg President and CEO Skirball Cultural Center
OUR MISSION The Skirball Cultural Center is a place of meeting guided by the Jewish tradition of welcoming the stranger and inspired by the American democratic ideals of freedom and equality. We welcome people of all communities and generations to participate in cultural experiences that celebrate discovery and hope, foster human connections, and call upon us to help build a more just society.

Take Part in Our Essential Values The Skirball mission is deeply rooted in Jewish heritage and inspired by its values. Over time, six of these values have emerged for us as the most vital, lighting our path toward building a better world. They are listed below, each one paired with a select exhibition or program that illuminates the meaning of the value. We hope you’ll join us. Welcome the stranger—Consider the commonalities and differences of American immigrant experiences across cultures, time periods, and circumstances during the spring Skirball Book Groups series, Stories of Immigration (see pp. 16–17). Honor memory—Hear from Rebecca Donner about her new book, All the Frequent Troubles of Our Days, telling the little-known story of her great-great-aunt, German resistance leader Mildred Harnack (see p. 15). Seek learning—Dig into some of the world’s most pressing issues during Great Decisions, a current events discussion group guided by resources from the nonpartisan Foreign Policy Association (see p. 18). Pursue justice—Be inspired by the life of civil rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. during a celebration concert featuring the Inner City Youth Orchestra of Los Angeles and young essayists from the Southern Christian Leadership Conference of Southern California (see p. 12). Build community—Join klezmer fans from across the region to celebrate the release of Mostly Kosher’s new album, This World Is Yours, which blends jazz, Latin, rock, and folk to create a musical feast accessible to all (see p. 13). Show kindness—During your next visit to Noah’s Ark at the Skirball, add to an outdoor art installation (pictured above) that asks contributors to think of ways to care for the world and one another (see pp. 22–23). Exploring New Worlds
Chart a course to visit before the exhibition closes!
Through February 20, 2022 Ninety-minute time slots More than fifty years ago, a television show called Star Trek broke ground with its daring vision—an inclusive cast of humans and interstellar beings cooperating to overcome challenges as they explore the cosmos. With themes of heroism, optimism, equality, and humanity, the franchise has continued to pose questions about life on Earth today as much as in its fictional future worlds. Encompassing more than a half-century of television series, spinoffs, and films, Star Trek: Exploring New Worlds sheds light on the enduring relevance of this pop-culture phenomenon. On view are must-see artifacts, set pieces, and props, such as the navigation console from the original series; costumes worn by Nichelle Nichols, Patrick Stewart, and Benedict Cumberbatch; and spaceship filming models of the USS Enterprise and USS Excelsior. EXHIBITIONS
SUSTAIN
From Loss to Renewal Through March 20, 2022 View a series of seven posters that pay tribute to LA’s essential workforce. The individuals featured—including a teacher, two doctors, and a grocery store employee—have all demonstrated strength in the face of COVID-19. Created by Los Angeles–based artist Stephanie Mercado, the posters feature beautiful florals and hand-carved miniature prints that reference the subjects’ lived experiences. Complementing Mercado’s work is a participatory installation that invites visitors to dedicate a stone in someone’s memory to a permanent outdoor display, evoking the Jewish tradition of leaving a stone at a gravesite. These components mark Phases II and III of Sustain, a three-part installation exploring meaningful expressions of grief and resilience. For Phase I, a yahrzeit candle burned in the Skirball lobby, honoring the lives lost to the pandemic. Before visiting the Skirball, please be sure you and your group adhere to our safety protocols (see p. 5).

VISIONS AND VALUES
Jewish Life from Antiquity to America Ongoing Explore four thousand years of Jewish experience in this permanent exhibition, which features objects from the Skirball’s renowned collection of Judaica and Americana—one of the largest in the world. Learn how the Jews have survived as a diverse, migratory, minority population: through actively engaging with the many communities and cultures they’ve encountered while also retaining a core set of values. Featured collection item—The quilt pictured above was created by the Hamish Amish Quilters of Van Nuys, California. This community of Jewish quilters incorporated photographic images of family members and historical events, depicting the story of nineteenth-century Central and Eastern European Jewish immigrants. Thirty individual patches surround an image of the Statue of Liberty and American Jewish poet Emma Lazarus’s famous words, “Give me your tired . . . / Your poor . . . .” A personal tribute to a shared experience. WORDS AND IDEAS REBECCA DONNER—ALL THE FREQUENT TROUBLES OF OUR DAYS
The Story of German Resistance Leader Mildred Harnack
Sunday, January 30, 2:00 pm (doors at 1:00 pm)
All the Frequent Troubles of Our Days tells the little-known story of Mildred Harnack, the American leader at the heart of the German resistance to Hitler. Hear from the book’s author, Harnack’s great-great-niece Rebecca Donner, as she speaks with celebrated literary curator Louise Steinman. Witnessing the troubling ascent of the Nazi party, Harnack began holding secret meetings in her apartment with a small band of political activists. By 1940, they had grown into the largest underground resistance group in Berlin. With “the pace of a political thriller” (Wall Street Journal), Donner’s nonfiction narrative brilliantly weaves letters, diary entries, survivor testimony, and declassified intelligence documents into a powerful, page-turning epic. Books available for purchase. A book signing follows the program.

OLGA TOKARCZUK—THE BOOKS OF JACOB
The Story of Eighteenth-Century Cult Leader Jacob Frank Sunday, February 13, 12:00 pm (PT)
Nobel Prize–winning author and activist Olga Tokarczuk joins us online from Poland to discuss her magnum opus, The Books of Jacob, with the novel’s Polish-to-English translator, author Jennifer Croft, and LA’s favorite literary curator, Louise Steinman. This sweeping story follows the comet-like rise and fall of Jacob Frank, a real-life messianic religious figure, as he blazes his way across eighteenth-century Europe. Narrated through the perspectives of his contemporaries—those who revere him, those who revile him— The Books of Jacob captures a world on the cusp of precipitous change, searching for certainty and longing for transcendence. CLASSES MOVIE DISCUSSION GROUP: WES ANDERSON
Wednesdays, February 2 and 16, March 2 and 16, 7:30–9:00 pm (PT) Among contemporary directors, Wes Anderson best represents mise-en-scène. His use of design elements is meticulous, marking each and every film with his unique and unmistakable imprint. Through viewing clips, storyboards, and related works, we’ll explore four of Anderson’s films and what makes them such enduring works of art. Rushmore (1998)—The film that launched Anderson’s career provides an entertaining kickoff for the series precisely because it contains the elements that uniquely identify it as a Wes Anderson film: symmetry, color, irony, literary references, and inventive musical selections. The Royal Tenenbaums (2001)—Anderson’s burgeoning skills create a masterpiece of narrative and production design. French New Wave influences, the works of J.D. Salinger, cross-decade fashions, and NYC streetscapes provide rich textures to this story of a dysfunctional family. Fantastic Mr. Fox (2009)—This stop-motion animation about a thieving fox is described by the New York Times as being Anderson’s “most fully realized and satisfying film [with] . . . its wit, its beauty and the sly gravity of its emotional undercurrents.” The Grand Budapest Hotel (2014)—Anderson’s highest grossing and most acclaimed film is an episodic delight following the adventures of a fastidious hotel concierge and his protégé as they travel through an occasionally dark 1930s European backdrop that recalls the films of Ernst Lubitsch and the writings of Stefan Zweig.
