MAR/APR 2022

PRESIDENT’S GREETING Knish from 2nd Ave Deli. The Number 19 at Langer’s. Kishka from Brent’s. Whatever’s hot at Ess-a-Bagel. In my household, we take a great deal of pride in our deli orders. For most of my life, I associated the tastes of my favorite deli items with my Jewish identity. That particular mix of potatoes, flaky dough, onions, and schmaltz in everything from latkes to knish was only to be found in a Jewish deli or a Jewish kitchen. Or so I thought. Then I took my first bite of fresh burek, served on the sidewalk in the old-town section of Sarajevo— that is, the old Ottoman section of Sarajevo. As far as my tastebuds were concerned, I might as well have been in my great aunt Ella’s walk-up in Queens. As we continued to explore the cuisine of the former territories of the Ottoman Empire, I came to understand that so many flavors I associated with my Jewish American identity were equally owed to an older history of diaspora, conquest, and acculturation. This spring, the Skirball presents the exhibition “I’ll Have What She’s Having”: The Jewish Deli, a comprehensive look at the history of Jewish delicatessens. From their beginnings in immigrant communities seeking familiar foods in an unfamiliar land to their impact on cuisine, community, and civic life—these stories are both distinctly Jewish and quintessentially American. Just like the Skirball. See you there!

Jessie Kornberg President and CEO Skirball Cultural Center

OUR MISSION The Skirball Cultural Center is a place of meeting guided by the Jewish tradition of welcoming the stranger and inspired by the American democratic ideals of freedom and equality. We welcome people of all communities and generations to participate in cultural experiences that celebrate discovery and hope, foster human connections, and call upon us to help build a more just society.

Visions and Values: Jewish Life from Antiquity to America

Take Part in Our Essential Values The Skirball mission is deeply rooted in Jewish heritage and inspired by its values. Over time, six of these values have emerged for us as the most vital, lighting our path toward building a better world. They are listed below, paired with select offerings that illuminate the meaning of the value. We hope you’ll join us. Welcome the stranger—Hear the fascinating story of Leonard Cohen’s 1973 tour on the front lines of the Yom Kippur War, where hundreds of young soldiers welcomed him into their community (see p. 16). Honor memory—Witness the musical lineage of L. Shankar as he performs songs inspired by his South Indian upbringing alongside his son and grandson (see p. 19). Seek learning—Explore family histories, create original art, and become an agent of change using the downloadable Visions and Values Curriculum, designed for students in Grades 4 through 12 (see p. 6). Pursue justice—Watch the Oscar-nominated film Writing with Fire and be inspired by the independent journalists of Khabar Lahariya who take it upon themselves to cover India’s inequities with unflinching determination (see p. 18). Build community—Raise a glass to liberation, new beginnings, and one another during ¡Passover a la Mexicana!, a tasting and toast featuring chef Pati Jinich (see p. 13). Show kindness—Discover how care and compassion are essential elements of the heroine archetype during a talk with world-renowned folklorist Maria Tatar (see p. 17). MAR/APR 2022

EXHIBITIONS

“I′LL HAVE WHAT SHE′S HAVING” The Jewish Deli Opening April 14, 2022 More than a place to get a meal, the Jewish deli is a community forged in food. The exhibition “I’ll Have What She’s Having”: The Jewish Deli explores how Jewish immigrants, mostly from Central and Eastern Europe, imported and adapted traditions to create a uniquely American restaurant. Get a taste of deli history through neon signs, menus, advertisements, uniforms, photographs, and clips of deli on the big and little screen. Plus, participate in fun photo ops and interactives to spark and share your own deli memories. See p. 4 for details about Museum admission and p. 31 for ticketing methods and policies.

Exploring ideas of identity, power, and belonging in the United States, Talking Back to Power: Projects by Aram Han Sifuentes presents garments, banners, samplers, quilts, and sculptures that highlight American immigrant experiences. The exhibition examines themes of justice and inclusion through artworks, including many that are co-created with Han Sifuentes’s community of collaborators. On view are pieces that delve into the artist’s own immigration experience, the valuable but undervalued labor that many immigrants provide, official and unofficial ways that immigrants create spaces of belonging, and the power of creative protest for envisioning a better future. MARIA TATAR—THE HEROINE WITH 1001 FACES Uncovering the Heroine's Quest

Sunday, March 27, 2:00 pm (doors at 1:00 pm)

Hear from world-renowned folklorist Maria Tatar. Her latest work, The Heroine with 1001 Faces, challenges notions of heroism with its male-centric emphasis on achieving glory and immortality. In conversation with celebrated literary curator Louise Steinman, Tatar shares how heroines wear their curiosity as a badge of honor and how their “mischief making” evidences compassion and concern. Their quests may not take the traditional form of a “hero’s journey,” but they reveal the values of courage, defiance, and, above all, care. A book signing follows the program. A Poetic Celebration of Motherhood Sunday, April 24, 3:00 pm (doors at 2:00 pm) —Lisa See,

author of The Island of Sea Women

Writers Bloc Presents® and the Skirball Cultural Center celebrate motherhood with an afternoon of poetry from former City Poet Laureate of West Hollywood Kim Dower in conversation with authors Lisa See and Hope Edelman. “What we inherit from our mothers, what we carry forward, what we never receive, and what we choose to leave behind—Kim Dower’s poetry resonates with the echo of a rich and complex mother-daughter relationship that she gently and carefully unravels line by line. This is a stunning collection from a poet whose wisdom as a daughter and a mother shines through on every page.”

I Wore This Dress Today for You, Mom

“In Chinese, the written character for ‘mother love’ is composed of two elements—‘love’ and ‘pain.’ Kim Dower understands this universal concept in her bones and captures its meaning in these beautiful and powerful poems.”
