MAY/JUN 2022

PRESIDENT’S GREETING One good place—for everyone. Recently that is how I heard our founder, Uri D. Herscher, describe his vision for the Skirball Cultural Center. Inspired by the ancient example of Abraham welcoming the stranger through an open tent flap, and informed by Uri’s own immigration experience, this dream has given the Skirball its fundamental purpose for twenty-five years and counting. As I look through the calendar of upcoming events, I can’t help but think of that refrain and smile. A virtual concert series celebrating local artists and the multigenerational immigration experiences that inform their artistic identities. Textile workshops for cover artist Aram Han Sifuentes’s Protest Banner Lending Library, where artists, educators, and community members come together and create vibrant fabric banners expressing their wishes for a more just society. A civic weekend with activities for the whole family that, in the words of Citizen University founder Eric Liu, “bring joy back to the ballot box,” just in time for the midterm primary elections. An exploration of global Shabbos meals with Skirball foodie favorites Faith Kramer and Jake Cohen. Kid-friendly flood stories and puppet performances that inspire empathy and curiosity. Each of these programs offers an opportunity for learning and connection. Together they represent the enduring vision for the Skirball as an oasis where community is strengthened. I hope you feel as I do, that whether through food, fun, or shared values, this season at the Skirball looks awfully good—for everyone!

Jessie Kornberg President and CEO Skirball Cultural Center

OUR MISSION The Skirball Cultural Center is a place of meeting guided by the Jewish tradition of welcoming the stranger and inspired by the American democratic ideals of freedom and equality. We welcome people of all communities and generations to participate in cultural experiences that celebrate discovery and hope, foster human connections, and call upon us to help build a more just society.

Take Part in Our Essential Values The Skirball mission is deeply rooted in Jewish heritage and inspired by its values. Over time, six of these values have emerged for us as the most vital, lighting our path toward building a better world. They are listed below, paired with select offerings that illuminate the meaning of the value. We hope you’ll join us. Welcome the Stranger—Hear first-hand stories of immigration from individuals who have fled oppression, violence, and war in search of a better life in the US during a conversation moderated by Refugees in America author, Lee T. Bycel (see p. 17). Honor Memory—Celebrate the life of Howard I. Friedman, the Skirball’s founding chairman, during a lecture and conversation named in his honor that focuses on Jewish values and American immigration (see p. 16). Seek Learning—Dig into the impact of the Jewish deli, its relevance in pop culture, and how these gathering places remain a prominent reminder of Ashkenazi Jewish heritage for Jews and non-Jews alike during a talk with Pastrami on Rye author, Ted Merwin (see p. 13). Pursue Justice—Explore the unresolved contradictions between America’s prison system and its democratic ideals of freedom and equality while watching Lyrics from Lockdown, a one-man theatrical production by Bryonn Bain (see p. 14). Build Community—Gather with friends old and new during Late Night! The Jewish Deli, featuring after-hours access to the galleries, a live DJ, and local deli pop-up stands (see p. 8). Show Kindness—Shake off the stresses of a second pandemic-era school year and practice self-compassion during the Skirball’s Educator Retreat, featuring hands-on workshops led by local artists Stephanie Mercado and Maite Gomez-Rejón (see p. 25). EXHIBITIONS

TALKING BACK TO POWER

Projects by Aram Han Sifuentes Through September 4, 2022

Exploring ideas of identity, power, and belonging in the United States, Talking Back to Power: Projects by Aram Han Sifuentes presents garments, banners, samplers, quilts, and sculptures that highlight American immigrant experiences. The exhibition examines themes of justice and inclusion through artworks, including many that are co-created with Han Sifuentes’s community of collaborators. On view are pieces that delve into the artist’s own immigration experience, the valuable but undervalued labor that many immigrants provide, official and unofficial ways that immigrants create spaces of belonging, and the power of creative protest for envisioning a better future. See p. 4 for details about admission and p. 31 for ticketing methods and policies. Ticketholders have ninety minutes to explore Talking Back to Power and The Jewish Deli (see pp. 8–9).

Learn how the Jews have survived as a diverse, migratory, minority population: through actively engaging with the many communities and cultures they’ve encountered, while also retaining a core set of values. See p. 4 for details about admission and p. 31 for ticketing methods and policies.

Featured display—Between 1880 and 1924, more than two million Jews immigrated from Eastern Europe to the United States in search of a better life. On view in Visions and Values, this tableau depicts a typical, new Jewish immigrant’s kitchen from that period. Look closely to find objects from the “Old Country” mixed in with newer “Americanized” methods of food preparation.

PERFORMANCE LYRICS FROM LOCKDOWN

Thursday, June 2, 7:00 pm (doors at 6:00 pm) The Skirball Cultural Center and Los Angeles Philharmonic present Lyrics from Lockdown, a groundbreaking multimedia production created by theater innovator Bryonn Bain. Exposing the unresolved contradictions between America’s prison system and its democratic ideals, this true story begins with Bain’s wrongful imprisonment while studying law at Harvard. From there, Bain weaves together the voices of more than forty characters into a one-man tour de force. See this award-winning theatrical production during a one-night-only event to celebrate the launch of the Center for Justice at UCLA and the release of Bain’s new book, Rebel Speak: A Justice Movement Mixtape. Fusing hip-hop, spoken word, R&B, calypso, and classical music, Lyrics from Lockdown tells a provocative story of racial profiling and wrongful incarceration in a nation imprisoning more people than any other in the world. The For Freedoms exhibition Another Justice: By Any Media Necessary, showcasing the art of women incarcerated at Victorville Federal Prison, will also be on view. Ticket proceeds go to the Dolores Huerta Foundation. Books available for purchase. A book signing follows the program.

WORDS AND IDEAS

KRISTINA WONG AND THE AUNTIE SEWING SQUAD

Sunday, May 15, 2:00 pm (galleries open 3:30–5:00 pm)

In March 2020, activist and comedian Kristina Wong didn’t know she was about to start a massive mutual-aid network, but that’s indeed what the Auntie Sewing Squad became. Led mostly by women of color, the “aunties” began by making masks for those most vulnerable and soon found themselves supplying thousands of face coverings for first responders, farmworkers, incarcerated people, and communities in need. To celebrate the recent release of the book The Auntie Sewing Squad Guide to Mask Making, Radical Care, and Racial Justice, enjoy a panel discussion moderated by UCLA Professor of Asian American Studies Grace Kyungwon Hong. Hear from Kristina Wong and fellow sewing squad members Preeti Sharma, Jenni Kuida, and Badly Licked Bear about how this grassroots social justice mission grew to fill a critical gap in care across the country. After the program, see Talking Back to Power: Projects by Aram Han Sifuentes, along with “I’ll Have What She’s Having”: The Jewish Deli and Visions and Values: Jewish Life from Antiquity to America (see pp. 8–12). Books available for purchase. A book signing follows the program. Timed-entry tickets to the exhibitions will be available on a first-come, first-served basis; last entry 4:30 pm.
