PRESIDENT’S GREETING This summer we’re celebrating a quarter century of Sunset Concerts! When the Skirball started this series in the late ’90s, it grew out of intimate dinnertime performances inside Zeidler’s Café. Since those humble beginnings, we’ve welcomed tens of thousands of concertgoers and showcased music from an incredible range of artists, including Kishi Bashi, Thao & The Get Down Stay Down, Goapele, and Gaby Moreno. For our twenty-fifth season, we will welcome back Mamak Khadem, ADG7, and Rocky Dawuni— favorites from summers past. We will give the stage to bluegrass klezmer band Nefesh Mountain and Mexican cumbia rock group Son Rompe Pera for their Skirball debuts. Finally, the Skirball is honored to present the legendary Stax Records icon Booker T. Jones for a special celebration of history, community, and music-making. To the right, you see the Skirball’s Essential Jewish Values enumerated and our hope to Build Community exemplified in this summer’s concert series. At the Skirball, we contextualize these values through specific citation of ancient texts. Our commitment to community is informed in part by a beautiful line from the book of Psalms, which has been translated as, “How good and pleasant it is to dwell together.” Of course, Psalms is so named because these texts were intended to be set to music, and indeed many still are. How fitting then that our concert series should draw attention back to this value, this text, and this tradition. Given these origins, for this summer we might also say, “How good and pleasant it is to dance, sing, and play together.” I hope you will!

Jessie Kornberg President and CEO Skirball Cultural Center

OUR MISSION The Skirball Cultural Center is a place of meeting guided by the Jewish tradition of welcoming the stranger and inspired by the American democratic ideals of freedom and equality. We welcome people of all communities and generations to participate in cultural experiences that celebrate discovery and hope, foster human connections, and call upon us to help build a more just society.

Sunset Concerts

Take Part in Our Essential Values The Skirball mission is deeply rooted in Jewish heritage and inspired by its values. Over time, six of these values have emerged for us as the most vital, lighting our path toward building a better world. They are listed below, paired with select offerings that illuminate the meaning of the value. Welcome the Stranger—Visit “I’ll Have What She’s Having”: The Jewish Deli and learn how an influx of Central and Eastern European Jewish immigrants gave us sky-high pastrami sandwiches, hot matzo ball soup, and other food favorites (see pp. 12–13). Honor Memory—Sample bites from four notable LA chefs and hear stories about how the food they make relates to their personal histories, cultures, and family traditions during The Dish (see p. 17). Seek Learning—Educators, foster compassion and encourage your students to become active community members through School and Teacher Programs at the Skirball! Registration opens this summer (see p. 24). Pursue Justice—Engage with themes of citizenship, civil rights, and social welfare within Talking Back to Power: Projects by Aram Han Sifuentes, plus make your very own fabric protest banner in a free workshop (see pp. 14–15). Build Community—Join music fans across Los Angeles to celebrate the twenty-fifth season of Sunset Concerts, featuring a lineup of bridge-building musicians from the United States and around the world (see pp. 8–11). Show Kindness—Give a gift to yourself or someone else by shopping books, jewelry, Judaica, and the new Jewish Deli and Talking Back to Power collections at Audrey’s Museum Store (see pp. 26–27).

ROCKY DAWUNI

Thursday, July 28, 8:00 pm (doors and galleries open at 6:30 pm) Musician and activist Rocky Dawuni—who calls both Los Angeles and Ghana home—has become a local favorite for his infectious, feel-good reggae tunes and globe-spanning Afro roots sound. Dawuni has shared stages with artists including Stevie Wonder, Peter Gabriel, and John Legend, and received a 2022 Grammy nomination for Best Global Music Album. Through his music and advocacy, he fights for climate justice, champions social causes, and unites generations and cultures.

“Dawuni spreads positivity through his music and actions.”—KCRW

MUSIC NEFESH MOUNTAIN

Thursday, August 4, 8:00 pm (doors and galleries open at 6:30 pm) Through klezmer melodies and Hebrew refrains, the boundary-pushing bluegrass Americana band Nefesh Mountain shares the beauty of Jewish culture with the world. Their most recent album, Songs for the Sparrows, was inspired by a life-changing trip to Poland and Ukraine, where band leaders Doni Zasloff and Eric Lindberg’s families emigrated from. Exploring a range of experiences from an Eastern European Jewish perspective, Nefesh Mountain uses music to tell stories of humanity with what has been called “old soul wisdom.”

BOOKER T. JONES

Thursday, August 11, 8:00 pm (doors and galleries open at 6:30 pm) Groundbreaking soul and R&B artist Booker T. Jones occupies an important place in the history of American music. At age seventeen, he fronted the seminal Memphis soul band Booker T. and the M.G.’s—a rare integrated group of musicians that served as the house band for Stax Records, working with the likes of Otis Redding, Bill Withers, and Wilson Pickett. Join Jones through a “Stax Revue” of iconic songs that illuminate an extraordinary career spanning nearly sixty years.

“One of the legends of soul music.” —New Yorker

ADG7

With Aram Han Sifuentes and Woori Sori

Thursday, August 18, 8:00 pm (doors and galleries open at 6:30 pm) Stunning audiences with their “candy-colored costumes and bouncy, upbeat, often swinging songs” (New York Times), South Korea–based ensemble ADG7 connects shamanic ritual music and beloved folk songs to contemporary pop. As part of this very special evening, we are pleased to welcome our friends from the Korean Cultural Center, Los Angeles, along with Skirball exhibiting artist Aram Han Sifuentes, who will perform with the Korean American drumming group Woori Sori.

SON ROMPE PERA

Thursday, August 25, 8:00 pm (doors and galleries open at 6:30 pm) Founding Son Rompe Pera members Kacho, Kilos, and Mongo Gama add their own rock sensibility to the cumbia they first played alongside their father while growing up on the outskirts of Mexico City. “Cumbia is like punk,” Mongo Gama explains. “It’s barrio, it’s of the working class, it’s of the people who have dreams.”

EXHIBITIONS VISIONS AND VALUES

Jewish Life from Antiquity to America Ongoing Explore four thousand years of Jewish experience in this permanent exhibition, which features objects from the Skirball’s renowned collection of Judaica —one of the largest in the world. Learn how the Jews have survived as a diverse, migratory, minority population: through actively engaging with the many communities and cultures they’ve encountered, while also retaining a core set of values. See p. 4 for details about admission and p. 31 for ticketing methods and policies.

Included with general admission | Advance reservations required Featured display—Jewish immigrants who arrived in the United States in the early twentieth century often found work in the garment trade, as do many new immigrants today. Located in Visions and Values, the display on the left features tools used by Jewish workers to cut fabric, stitch seams, and press garments. It also includes photos and objects that reflect Jewish participation in labor movements to create fair conditions, including a dues card for the International Ladies’ Garment Workers Union. Across the gallery (and shown in detail below), a trio of sculptures by contemporary artist Aram Han Sifuentes links the stories of her Korean immigrant garment worker family with the experiences of Jewish immigrants who performed similar labor over one hundred years ago.

CANTER’S CEILING SCARF Have you ever looked up while eating at Canter’s Deli? During the early ’60s, an artist named Lucille Mayer created a series of four graphics that were transformed into ceiling tiles. Her fall design still graces the canopy of the famous deli today. Now ninety-eight years old, Mayer has given the Skirball permission to use her original mid-century design for the creation of a gorgeous scarf. This cotton/modal piece will provide a burst of color to lift your spirits.

MEMBERSHIP MEMBER MOMENT “Recently I visited The Jewish Deli exhibition and absolutely loved it! So much so that I was inspired to renew my membership and give an additional donation. The exhibition reminded me of special memories of frequenting delis with loved ones. The values that the Skirball imbues in their offerings, such as Honor Memory, are so meaningful to me. “The Skirball is a treasure of Los Angeles that simply cannot be replicated. We Angelenos are so fortunate to have this remarkable institution in our own backyard.” —Francine Oschin, Skirball Member since 2007
