Welcome to the Skirball Cultural Center! At the Skirball, learning means connecting students and teachers to one another, to history, and to the world around them. Our Education programs are rooted in the Jewish and American democratic ideals of community, freedom, and equality. We welcome people of all communities to participate in cultural experiences that celebrate discovery and hope, foster human connections, and call upon us to help build a more just society. Led by inspiring artists and educators, our programs strengthen learners’ cultural literacy; encourage creativity and resourcefulness; and cultivate empathy, self-esteem, and civic engagement. School Tours and Performances Tours and performances for Pre-K through Grade 12 students explore commonalities across cultures, transport students to key moments in history, and spark creativity and imagination. Tours are highly participatory, align with Common Core and California State Standards, and are supported with resources to help connect the on-site visits to classroom learning. Performance programs and workshops invite students to experience a wide array of music, dance, and theater up close and personal, encouraging them to use their creative voices in the classroom and beyond. School programs are offered September 2017 through June 2018. Programs in this section are organized by grade level, with tours listed first, then performances. TOUR: Noah’s Ark at the Skirball

10:00–11:30 a.m. • Limited to 50 students per tour Ignite your students’ creativity and curiosity with a voyage aboard Noah’s Ark! Inside this award-winning destination—featuring whimsical animals crafted from repurposed, everyday objects—students learn about the value of community and collaboration by engaging in hands-on learning experiences such as storytelling, music making, building and exploring, and caring for the Ark’s inhabitants. LET’S BUILD A BETTER WORLD TOGETHER! Winner of the California Association of Museums’ 2014 Superintendent’s Award for Excellence in Museum Education Grade 1 and 2 teachers, take part in activities aimed at caring for communities in Los Angeles and beyond. Check the “Noah’s Ark Build a Better World” box on the online registration form to be eligible for a special service-learning project designed to foster empathy, collaboration, and civic responsibility on your Noah’s Ark school tour. Select schools will receive an in-class follow-up workshop led by a Skirball educator.

TOUR: Journey Through Time: Stories of the Jewish People 10:00 a.m.–12:00 p.m. • Limited to 50 students per tour Through storytelling, dramatic play, and exploration of objects in the Museum’s core exhibition, Visions and Values: Jewish Life from Antiquity to America, students gain a greater understanding of Jewish culture. Journeying back in time, they travel a route to ancient Israel, become merchants at a trading post along the Silk Road to China, visit fifteenth-century Spain, and move into a crowded house in an Eastern European village. Each class completes an art project inspired by Patricia Polacco’s book The Keeping Quilt. GRADES 1–3

STORYTELLING: Boxtales Theatre Company Friday, November 3, 2017 • 10:00–11:30 a.m. The award-winning Boxtales Theatre Company presents an original performance drawn from myths, stories, and fairytales from around the world. Students will engage their imaginations and creativity in an immersive storytelling experience that encourages compassion and resourcefulness.

K–GRADE 2

MUSIC: Las Colibrí Friday, January 26, 2018 • 10:00–11:30 a.m. Las Colibrí, or “The Hummingbirds,” have a passion for music and girl power! This all-female mariachi band features instrumentalists and vocalists who blend their talents into lovely vocal harmonies, unique arrangements, and updated interpretations of traditional songs. Students will experience a fun, modern twist on a musical tradition rooted in Mexican, Indigenous, and European cultures!

School Tours and Performances: Grades 3–5 GRADE 3

TOUR: At Home in LA 10:00 a.m.–12:00 p.m. • Limited to 50 students per tour This interactive program celebrates Los Angeles’s incredible cultural diversity and the universal values of welcoming others, teaching and learning, and caring for the world around us. Students make music together, discuss their own families’ cultural celebrations around a Jewish holiday table, explore major life events through everyday objects, and create a take-home project related to community service. GRADE 4

TOUR: Architecture at the Skirball 10:00 a.m.–12:00 p.m. • Limited to 50 students per tour Students discover the art and science of architecture by exploring the dynamic indoor and outdoor spaces of the expansive Skirball campus, designed by internationally renowned architect Moshe Safdie. Students then act as architects and civic planners as they engage in a collaborative public building project. GRADE 5

TOUR: Americans and Their Family Stories 10:00 a.m.–12:00 p.m. • Limited to 60 students per tour Students explore stories of people who have come to America from around the world by examining objects from a variety of cultures and time periods. Through immersive storytelling, students re-enact an American immigrant experience at the turn of the twentieth century— undergoing the inspection process at Ellis Island, attending a public school in 1908, and searching for an occupation in the midst of a bustling New York City neighborhood.

DANCE/MUSIC: Goedel Hoop Dancers and Toveema Friday, March 16, 2018 • 10:00–11:30 a.m. Two dynamic performance groups come together to share stories, dance, and play music from American Indian traditions of the West. World-champion hoop dancer Terry L. Goedel, a Yakama/Tulalip Indian, brings to life the story of an eagle through the art, sport, and ceremony of hoop dance. Toveema, featuring performers of Tongva and Kumeyaay descent, illuminates the cultural origins of the Los Angeles Basin and beyond with interactive song, dance, and storytelling. GRADES 3–5

MUSIC: Quitapenas Friday, April 20, 2018 • 10:00–11:30 a.m. This tropical Afro-Latin band shares the history and rhythms of Angola, Peru, Colombia, Brazil, and beyond. With their name meaning “to remove worries,” Quitapenas strives to make you feel carefree and dance! Students will be invited to learn Afro-Latin beats and to understand the connection between different traditional rhythms and contemporary music.

School Tours and Performances: Grades 5–8 GRADES 5–8

TOUR: Stories of Our City 10:00 a.m.–12:00 p.m. • Limited to 60 students per tour Offered October 2017–February 2018 only! Who tells the stories of our cities? Who makes the art of our communities? Through two Skirball exhibitions, students will explore these questions and discover the intertwined histories of Mexico and Los Angeles. Students will learn about the iconic paintings, photos, sculptures, and murals of Mexican Renaissance artists, such as José Clemente Orozco and Diego Rivera, in Another Promised Land: Anita Brenner’s Mexico, and engage with photographs of contemporary LA street art in Surface Tension by Ken Gonzales-Day: Murals, Signs, and Mark-Making in LA. The tour includes an artist-led workshop in which students create their own visual stories of LA. Another Promised Land and Surface Tension by Ken Gonzales-Day are part of Pacific Standard Time: LA/LA, a far-reaching and ambitious exploration of Latin American and Latino art in dialogue with Los Angeles, taking place from September 2017 through January 2018 at more than seventy cultural institutions across Southern California. Pacific Standard Time is an initiative of the Getty. The presenting sponsor of PST: LA/LA is Bank of America. Major support for Another Promised Land is provided through grants from the Getty Foundation.

GRADE 6

TOUR: Archaeology of the Near East 10:00 a.m.–12:00 p.m. • Limited to 60 students per tour At the Skirball’s Archaeology Discovery Center and outdoor archaeological dig site, modeled after an ancient town discovered in the Near East, students use authentic tools of the trade to excavate, collect and analyze findings, and present hypotheses about the history, commerce, religion, and cultural practices of people from the Iron Age. Students study ancient artifacts and replicas to make connections between life in the ancient world and today. Note: Dig activities may be moved indoors due to weather. skirball.org/education

MUSIC: Buyepongo Friday, October 13, 2017 • 10:00–11:30 a.m. With a mission to “make the world dance,” local band Buyepongo draws heavily from African American and Latino musical cultures, hip-hop, and the “roots” music of the Caribbean. Students will go on an exhilarating exploration of a distinctively diverse LA sound, grooving to the driving conga beats, pulsing bass, and dynamic horn section of this vibrant band. GRADES 6–8

DANCE: Culture Shock LA Friday, December 1, 2017 • 10:00–11:30 a.m. Culture Shock LA, a hip-hop dance and music company, invites students to see dance and culture in new ways, cultivating self-worth, dignity, and respect for all people. This energetic and inspiring performance introduces the rich history of hip-hop while promoting a vision of community, inclusivity, and connection—and getting students on their feet to join the fun!

School Tours and Performances: Grades 9–12 GRADES 9–12

TOUR: Stories of Our City 10:00 a.m.–12:00 p.m. • Limited to 60 students per tour Offered October 2017–February 2018 only! Who tells the stories of our cities? Who makes the art of our communities? STUDENT PRESENTATION: Mark-Making in LA: Stories of Our Streets Thursday, December 7, 2017 • 10:00 a.m.–12:00 p.m. Bring your students to this special presentation and discussion of original artwork made by high school students in the Skirball’s in-school residency program. This dynamic and participatory gathering is the culminating event of a multiweek residency in which one class of students works with a teaching artist to create artwork inspired by the Skirball’s Pacific Standard Time: LA/LA exhibitions, Another Promised Land and Surface Tension by Ken Gonzales-Day. These exhibitions (described above) and students’ related artwork will serve as catalysts for dialogue about artistic process and civic values. skirball.org/education 11


Short Films and Dialogue This series is presented in partnership with SIMA Classroom, a groundbreaking online film library for teachers that seeks to educate, activate, and inspire the next generation of global citizens and changemakers. These films explore issues of sustainability, gender equality, social entrepreneurship, human rights, and other topics of global importance. Each screening includes guest speakers and hands-on activities, inviting students to reflect, respond, and take action! GRADES 9–12

Empowerment and Self-Expression Friday, February 9, 2018 • 10:00 a.m.–12:00 p.m. This program will introduce short-format films profiling women and girls from around the world who are fighting for gender equality. From a fashion collective journeying from Stockholm to Johannesburg, to a rugby player in Mumbai, to a computer coder in Tanzania, these powerful women and girls are standing up for their rights, expressing themselves, and helping to improve the lives of those around them. After the screening, speakers from various disciplines will discuss the importance of access and equality in our global fight for women’s rights. GRADES 9–12

Civic Engagement—Protest, Art, and Citizenship Friday, April 13, 2018 • 10:00 a.m.–12:00 p.m. What does it mean to be a good citizen? How do we make our communities better? These questions lie at the heart of the four short films presented in this interactive day of civic engagement. Focusing on stories of citizen journalists in Haiti, street artists around the world, and protesters and immigrants in the United States, this program will include films, speakers, and activities that ask participants to think about what they can do to help improve their own communities.

In-School Residency Each year, the Skirball offers an in-school residency program designed to encourage students to engage with issues that are important in their lives and explore how art can be a tool for civic and social action—igniting their self-confidence, imagination, and sense of agency. Students and teachers work intensively over multiple weeks with a skilled teaching artist and Skirball educators to explore and express aspects of their own identity through collaborative, creative practice. Each residency culminates in a professionally produced, student-created program for hundreds of students at the Skirball.

GRADES 9–12

Mark-Making in LA: Stories of Our Streets September–December 2017 • Eight-to-ten-week program; approximately 2 hours per week In this high school residency, one class of students will embark on an immersive investigation of street art and its rich traditions across Los Angeles and Mexico. Two Skirball exhibitions— Another Promised Land: Anita Brenner’s Mexico and Surface Tension by Ken Gonzales-Day: Murals, Signs, and Mark-Making in LA, both presented as a part of Pacific Standard Time: LA/LA—will serve as an entry point and framework for this residency. Guided by a teaching artist, students will explore the contemporary relevance of street art and design in our city, creating original artwork that shares their stories of life in LA. The residency concludes with a dynamic and participatory gathering at the Skirball, where students’ works of art will serve as catalysts for dialogue about artistic process and civic values. 2. SUBMIT YOUR REQUEST Complete and submit the online request form for your desired program. Please

follow registration instructions carefully and make sure to fill out all required fields; incomplete forms will not be accepted by our online system. Registration procedures, scheduling guidelines, program fees, admission and transportation scholarship information, and other helpful hints can be found in the Frequently Asked Questions section at skirball.org/plan-your-school-visit. You will receive an automated e-mail when your program request form has been received. Please note that the automated e-mail is not a final confirmation of your trip. It only indicates that your request has been received.

Teaching Through Storytelling: Three-Day Workshop Tuesday, June 27–Thursday, June 29, 2017 • 8:30 a.m.–3:30 p.m. Storytelling has the power to inspire students to develop creative ways of communicating and collaborating. The award-wining installation Noah’s Ark at the Skirball™ and the Skirball’s exhibition Paul Simon: Words & Music serve as platforms for exploring the craft of storytelling through movement, music, and theater arts. Teachers participate in hands-on, artist-led workshops and design dynamic, interdisciplinary lessons that support language arts, social studies, math, science, and visual and performing arts curricula. Participants earn one LAUSD salary point and gain access to advance registration for Skirball 2017–2018 school programs. Teacher Programs TEACHING Our World

Teaching Our World Through the Arts introduces K–Grade 12 teachers to arts-integration teaching techniques that foster students’ critical thinking, creative problem-solving, collaboration, and civic literacy skills. Participants learn and practice strategies that use the arts to enhance core content and make curriculum more meaningful—engaging students in social activism and strengthening classroom communities.

The course is divided into four strands. Each strand consists of four full-day Saturdays of training. FREE: The Skirball is an official LAUSD Arts Community Network partner, providing FREE registration for this program to credentialed teachers at LAUSD and LAUSD-dependent schools. This funding is graciously provided by LAUSD’s Arts Education Branch.

Strand 1: Visual Art and Photography Four Saturdays: October 7, 14, 21, 28, 2017 • 8:30 a.m.–4:00 p.m. In conjunction with the exhibitions Another Promised Land: Anita Brenner’s Mexico and Surface Tension by Ken Gonzales-Day: Murals Signs, and Mark-Making in LA—both presented as a part of Pacific Standard Time: LA/LA—explore iconic works of art that trace the long-standing cultural exchange between Los Angeles and Mexico. Learn art-making techniques that help students connect to their personal and cultural histories and stories.

Strand 2: Theater and Film Four Saturdays: January 20, 27 and February 3, 10, 2018 • 8:30 a.m.–4:00 p.m. Work directly with theater and film artists to learn performance and media-based teaching strategies that bring content to life, cultivate community, and build collaborative skills.

Strand 3: Movement and Dance Four Saturdays: February 24 and March 3, 10, 17, 2018 • 8:30 a.m.–4:00 p.m. Learn exciting and accessible strategies that use embodiment to involve students in the learning process and support creativity, self-expression, empathy, and collaboration.

Strand 4: Words and Music Four Saturdays: April 14, 21, 28 and May 5, 2018 • 8:30 a.m.–4:00 p.m. In conjunction with the exhibition Leonard Bernstein at 100, musicians and performance poets model how to incorporate music and rhythm into the curriculum to activate student learning and inspire social change.
