At the Skirball JUL/AUG 2018

PRESIDENT’S GREETING A new season of Sunset Concerts is upon us. I savor these opportunities to gather with people from across the community— to become less of a stranger to each other through the joy of music by artists from around the world. I am moved not only by the rhythms and melodies, but also by the messages and meanings of their songs. I am inspired by what the artists communicate —whether they sing of love and devotion, sorrow and struggle, or liberation and hope. At our Sunset Concerts we learn of the musicians’ own journeys, the experiences that have shaped them, and the places they call home. On August 30, we’ll meet Gili Yalo, an Ethiopian Jew who fled war and famine to find refuge in the State of Israel, and who now electrifies audiences with his triumphant, upbeat live shows. On August 16, when the band Ranky Tanky takes the stage, we’ll learn about the Gullah people of the South Carolina Low Country and their uniquely soulful expression of Afro-Americana. A Jewish teaching compares the Hebrew alphabet to sparks of light. When the letters touch to form words, they ignite one another, and new lights are born. This is what it’s like to attend our Sunset Concerts. The audience becomes the alphabet, and the music ignites us. When we come together to rejoice in song and story, the light just grows and grows.

Uri D. Herscher

Founding President and CEO Skirball Cultural Center

OUR MISSION The Skirball Cultural Center is a place of meeting guided by the Jewish tradition of welcoming the stranger and inspired by the American democratic ideals of freedom and equality. We welcome people of all communities and generations to participate in cultural experiences that celebrate discovery and hope, foster human connections, and call upon us to help build a more just society.

SPOTLIGHT—SELECTIONS FROM KEHINDE WILEY’S THE WORLD STAGE: ISRAEL Behold two majestic, large-scale works from The World Stage: Israel by Kehinde Wiley, recently named one of TIME magazine’s 100 Most Influential People of 2018.

SPOTLIGHT OVERVIEW

Wiley met the subjects depicted in this series in nightclubs and Tuesday–Sunday shopping districts in Jerusalem, Tel Aviv, and Lod. Solomon Mashash and Benediter Brkou portray two men from Israel’s 12:30–12:45 p.m. Ethiopian Jewish community. While sitting for their portraits, the men shared stories of their challenges as recent immigrants and of the joy they find in reclaiming a sense of community through hip-hop music. In these paintings, Wiley celebrates their complex identities as Israeli, Jewish, and African. Surrounded by vivid patterns drawn from Jewish ritual art, the men gaze back at the viewer with pride.
