SEP/OCT 2021

PRESIDENT’S GREETING Even as we continue to navigate the challenges of the continuing pandemic, this season of renewal is a time of excitement and celebration at the Skirball. Synagogal communities from around Los Angeles are returning to the Skirball for holiday services. Families are gathering for weddings, bat mitzvahs, and other affirmations of Jewish identity. And after more than eighteen months closed, the Skirball’s permanent exhibitions Visions and Values and Noah’s Ark at the Skirball are (finally) reopening! After a year of closures and cancellations, any one of these gatherings or openings would be reason enough to celebrate (dayenu!). But this fall also marks the arrival of the long-awaited exhibition Star Trek: Exploring New Worlds. Seeking learning is one of the essential values at the Skirball and one of the touchstones of Star Trek’s vision for the future. For decades, Star Trek audiences have tuned in to ride alongside the series’ fictional crews to explore strange new worlds, seek out new life, and observe new civilizations—not to conquer or colonize, but to understand. At the Skirball we often quote the central Talmudic teaching that “great is study, for it leads to action.” Star Trek’s universe feels hopeful because the characters live this value as they traverse the universe, finding harmony with others and appreciation for otherness.

Jessie Kornberg President and CEO Skirball Cultural Center

OUR MISSION The Skirball Cultural Center is a place of meeting guided by the Jewish tradition of welcoming the stranger and inspired by the American democratic ideals of freedom and equality. We welcome people of all communities and generations to participate in cultural experiences that celebrate discovery and hope, foster human connections, and call upon us to help build a more just society.

Take Part in Our Essential Values The Skirball mission is deeply rooted in Jewish heritage and inspired by its values. Over time, six of these values have emerged for us as the most vital, lighting our path toward building a better world. They are listed below, each one paired with a select exhibition or program that illuminates the meaning of the value. We hope you’ll join us. Welcome the stranger—Learn how the Jews have engaged with the many communities and cultures they’ve encountered throughout their history in the exhibition Visions and Values: Jewish Life from Antiquity to America. (see p. 12) Honor memory—In Phase II of the installation Sustain: From Loss to Renewal, take a moment to reflect as you dedicate a visitation stone in memory of a loss. (see p. 13) Seek learning—Be inspired by Starfleet and its cosmic quest for discovery and understanding in the exhibition Star Trek: Exploring New Worlds. (see pp. 8–9) Pursue justice—See how artists around the world have navigated the impacts of colonialism and conflict to call for justice, empathy, and understanding in the class Cross-Cultural Encounters in Art. (see p. 20) Build community—Introduce little ones to themes of collaboration and determination as you work together to weather a great big storm aboard Noah’s Ark at the Skirball. (see pp. 14–15) Show kindness—Treat yourself with compassion using techniques shared in the class Giving Grief Meaning: Self-Care Practices for Positive Change. (see p. 17)

SUSTAIN

From Loss to Renewal Through March 20, 2022 Responding to the COVID-19 crisis, Sustain: From Loss to Renewal explores meaningful expressions of grief and resilience. The outdoor installation looks to Jewish traditions of mourning and the Los Angeles art community to guide us through our collective grief and move forward. It is presented in three phases: Phase I (May 1–August 1, 2021)—Placed in the Skirball lobby, a yahrzeit candle burned in memory of those lost to the pandemic. Phase II (July 3–September 10, 2021)— Evoking the Jewish gesture of leaving a stone at a gravesite, visitors can dedicate a stone in memory of a loss. After Phase II ends, the stones will become part of the Skirball’s North Arroyo as a lasting acknowledgment of what has been lost. Phase III (September 11, 2021–March 20, 2022)—View a series of seven images by local artist Stephanie Mercado. Paying tribute to LA’s diverse workforce— especially those disproportionately affected by the pandemic—the collection highlights the ways in which community sustains us during crises and is essential to creating a more just and humane society. Visitors can make arrangements to experience this outdoor installation free of charge by emailing info@skirball.org or calling (310) 440-4500.

Included with general Museum admission | No walk-ups The exhibition and its related educational programs at the Skirball Cultural Center are made possible by generous support from the following donor: Stephanie and Harold Bronson

MUSIC AN EVENING WITH JAMIE BAUM AND MYRA MELFORD

Angel City Jazz at the Skirball

Jamie Baum

Myra Melford

Friday, October 15, 8:00 pm (doors at 7:00 pm) The Skirball is honored to partner with Angel City Jazz for an evening with flutist Jamie Baum and pianist Myra Melford. Bridging elements of Arabic, Indian, and Jewish music through inventive jazz compositions, Baum has “played an essential role in bringing the flute from jazz’s margins to the center of the action” (The Mercury News). Opening the show, Melford has spent the last three decades making music that draws inspiration from the blues of her native Chicago, the poetry of Fernando Pessoa, and literature by Eduardo Galeano to create a sound NPR hails as having “an endless capacity for elasticity and surprise.”

THE MANDOLIN IN JEWISH LIFE AND BEYOND

Thursdays, October 7–28, 11:00 am–12:30 pm (PT)

In the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, mandolin clubs and community orchestras were ubiquitous in Ashkenazi Jewish communities. Frequently associated with progressive social and political movements, the mandolin served a central role in music education at Jewish schools and provided one of the only outlets for pre-war Eastern European Jewish women to express themselves musically. Explore this long-overlooked history through rare photographs, ephemera, and recordings from a number of Jewish mandolin legends. Together we’ll place the Jewish affinity for the instrument in the context of broader cultural trends. Instructor: Eric Stein 4 sessions

The Matrix (1999)—Released as the Internet was becoming a ubiquitous part of everyday life, this blockbuster film questions the nature of reality in a world where ideas, information, and even one’s own presence can be convincingly represented digitally. MEMBER MOMENT “When my son (pictured right) was a year old, a friend invited us to listen to music at the Skirball. She couldn’t believe we had never been before and encouraged us to get a membership (‘You would love it!’). The music was excellent, the venue pristine, every area expansive and made to delight. And yet, what I remember most from that day was that we felt fundamentally welcomed. The musicians invited dancing, the exhibitions invited interaction, and the people invited conversation. There were so many smiles. ”We joined and have been back so many times because we feel we are not only allowed to be ourselves, but that our family’s participation is invited and supported—even celebrated. Wonder, diversity, and exploration meet scholarship at the Skirball, and the result is a sanctuary unlike any other.” —Anne and the Morea Steingieser family, Skirball Members since 2019

To seek out new life and build a peaceful interplanetary coalition. Like the Enterprise, the Skirball is charting a course to welcome people of all cultures and backgrounds to come together, make discoveries, and build lasting community. With your help, we hope to do all that and more in the years to come. Embark on our “five-year mission” to be part of the Skirball’s future success and enjoy all the perks of your Skirball Membership along the way.
