IN-SCHOOL RESIDENCY Each year, the Skirball offers an in-school residency program that encourages students to engage with issues important in their lives and to explore art as a tool for civic and social action—igniting their self-confidence, imagination, and sense of agency. Students and teachers work intensively over the course of multiple weeks with a skilled teaching artist and Skirball educators to explore and express aspects of their own identities through collaborative creative practice. Each residency culminates in a professionally produced, studentcreated program for hundreds of students at the Skirball. For more information and to apply for a Skirball residency, visit skirball.org/education/for-your-students.

“Our main goal wasn’t to create something just to pass the class or obtain an A, but to create something that demonstrates the reality of discrimination against our people and the steps we will take, so we can create a just world.” —High School Residency Student

GRADES 9–12 Art and Activism

October–December 2018 | Approximately 2 hours per week In this high school residency, one class of students will embark on an in-depth investigation of the remarkable life and successful career of a social change-maker and cultural icon: Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg. An original Skirball exhibition, Notorious RBG: The Life and Times of Ruth Bader Ginsburg—based upon the New York Times–bestselling book of the same name—will serve as an entry point and framework for the residency. Working with a professional teaching artist, students will examine RBG’s ongoing work of addressing gender inequality and develop their own creative projects that can act as platforms for action. The residency will culminate in a dynamic and participatory gathering at the Skirball, where students’ works of art will serve as catalysts for dialogue about artistic process, civic values, and social justice.
