MAY/JUN 2021

PRESIDENT’S GREETING This year my Passover traditions included something new: The Skirball Haggadah, a volume we published last spring, just as we closed our doors to the public. One passage from the text has stayed on my mind: “When others suffer— even those who have caused us pain—we feel no joy. We reduce the wine in our cups, pouring out one drop for each of the plagues upon Egypt.” The complexity of experiencing the joy of liberation even while we feel others’ pain is an essential duality of the Passover story and so many Jewish traditions. We find ourselves in another moment of emotional complexity as we celebrate the reopening of our campus after more than a year of closure due to the pandemic. We are overjoyed to welcome you back! The magic of Noah’s Outdoor Explorers has been the perfect start to a safe Skirball reopening. This month we add the presentation of the groundbreaking special exhibition Trace, by world-renowned Chinese artist Ai Weiwei. After all this time, we cannot wait to meet you in person, enjoy these treasures, and reclaim community. Yet the tragic losses of the last year and continuing struggles of friends and neighbors are the inescapable context of all our experiences right now. With the awareness of that collective suffering, it feels particularly meaningful that Trace was conceived during the artist’s own period of confinement, depicting so many who have been jailed for their expression and activism and constructed from one of childhood’s happiest materials: LEGO® blocks. So we welcome you back with all possible joy, and also hope that whatever the past year has been like for you, Ai Weiwei’s astonishing expression of solidarity and humanity speaks to you and helps you feel connected once again to us and a community of conscience.

Jessie Kornberg President and CEO Skirball Cultural Center

OUR MISSION The Skirball Cultural Center is a place of meeting guided by the Jewish tradition of welcoming the stranger and inspired by the American democratic ideals of freedom and equality. We welcome people of all communities and generations to participate in cultural experiences that celebrate discovery and hope, foster human connections, and call upon us to help build a more just society. 2

Story time during Noah’s Outdoor Explorers

Take Part in Our Essential Values The Skirball mission is deeply rooted in Jewish heritage and inspired by its values. Over time, six of these values have emerged for us as the most vital, lighting our path toward building a better world. They are listed below, each one paired with a select upcoming program that illuminates the meaning of the value. We hope you’ll join us. Welcome the stranger—Listen in as award-winning American author Francisco Goldman discusses his new novel, Monkey Boy, about growing up caught between two worlds and searching for belonging. (see p. 8) Honor memory—Hear from chef Jake Cohen about his new cookbook, Jew-ish, reinventing the food of his Ashkenazi heritage and drawing inspiration from his husband’s Mizrahi traditions. (see p. 9) Seek learning—Watch Out Loud, a triumphant documentary that follows members of the Trans Chorus of Los Angeles as they learn to sing together for the first time. (see p. 10) Pursue justice—Witness Dastak: I Wish You Me, Ananya Dance Theatre’s powerful new performance created and filmed in Minnesota following George Floyd’s killing last year. (see p. 10) Build community—Explore the history of Boyle Heights as a site for coalition building and multiracial solidarity during a talk featuring historian George J. Sánchez and community leader David Kipen. (see p. 9) Show kindness—Reflect on the ways you can take care of the earth and one another during Noah’s Outdoor Explorers, a safe on-site Skirball Member program specially designed for little ones and their grown-ups. (see pp. 6–7) MAY/JUN 2021

BILLY WILDER MOVIE GROUP

Thursdays, May 13 and 27, June 10 and 24, 7:30–9:00 pm (PT)

Billy Wilder’s brilliant storytelling and film direction revealed both comic and tragic truths about the human condition in ways that make his films classic, enduring, and relevant. A refugee from Nazi Germany, Wilder reigned as Hollywood’s greatest and most prolific creative genius in the 1940s through ’60s, racking up twenty-one Oscar nominations and many wins along the way. In this discussion series, we’ll focus on four Wilder films that demonstrate his expansive command of styles and genres: the noir classic Double Indemnity; the social drama The Lost Weekend, featuring Ray Milland at the height of his career; the biting take on Hollywood Sunset Boulevard; and the film that arguably catapulted both Jack Lemmon and Shirley MacLaine to stardom, The Apartment. EXHIBITIONS AI WEIWEI: TRACE

SAVE THE DATE!

One-hour time slots offered Tuesday–Sunday, May 15–August 1, 2021 Weekdays beginning every half hour 12:30–4:00 pm Weekends beginning every half hour 10:30 am–4:00 pm

Ticket sales open May 11.

A moving depiction of courage in the face of authoritarianism, Ai Weiwei: Trace illuminates the power of resistance. Created in 2014, when the famed contemporary artist was under house arrest, the monumental display portrays activists, prisoners of conscience, and advocates of free speech from around the world. On view at the Skirball are eighty-three of the work’s original 176 portraits, each one hand-assembled from thousands of LEGO® bricks. To Ai, the portraits pay tribute to “heroes of our time,” many of them ordinary citizens who have stood up against injustice in their communities. Complementing the portraits is a striking wallpaper designed by Ai Weiwei entitled The Animal That Looks Like a Llama but Is Really an Alpaca. At first glance, the pattern looks merely decorative, but upon further inspection, you’ll discover hidden iconography like handcuffs and surveillance cameras. Look closely to find the alpacas—a mascot for freedom of expression in Chinese internet culture. All visitors are assigned an entry time permitting up to one hour in the gallery. Two-week ticket blocks will be released every other Tuesday, beginning May 11. See p. 22 for ticketing methods and policies.

EXHIBITIONS

TIGHTROPE

Americans Reaching for Hope Through May 31, 2021

Experience Tightrope: Americans Reaching for Hope in its final weeks! Based on the bestselling book of the same name by journalists Nicholas D. Kristof and Sheryl WuDunn, this online exhibition illustrates a central tension of American life: that here, in one of the world’s richest economies, all too many live precariously—as if on a tightrope. Yet, as the exhibition highlights, change is possible. Workable solutions have emerged to help communities and individuals rebuild their lives. Take Geneva Cooley (pictured above) for example. Charged for a minor drug offense in 2002, she was sentenced to life without the possibility of parole. Recognizing the cruelty of her sentence, a team of lawyers successfully argued for her release by basing their case on what Cooley’s sentence would be if she were convicted today. After nearly two decades behind bars, she is finally reunited with her son and grandchildren.

14

s ki r ba ll. org

But the injustice of Cooley’s story is not unique, and an outsized rate of incarceration is just one of many structural problems facing poor and working-class Americans. Through frontline storytelling and historical context, along with images by acclaimed photojournalist Lynsey Addario, Tightrope offers an unflinching look at our country’s most complex problems, including homelessness, the opioid epidemic, and a lack of affordable healthcare. Immerse yourself in the exhibition’s vivid storytelling, then use the accompanying Action Guide to discover steps you can take to work toward a more just society.

MEMBER MOMENT “I just joined the Skirball—something I should have done years ago—and made a modest contribution. I recently had the privilege of viewing the Skirball’s interview with Ai Weiwei. It reminded me yet again how broad the view of the Skirball has always been and how important that is to me as a Jewish person. This was a major ‘score’ for you and all of us who were able to watch. It was spectacular, and I was impressed yet again.” —Andrea Graham, Member since February 2021

IN THE COMMUNITY CONNECTING WITH LA FAMILY HOUSING

Inspired by the call to turn empathy into action in the online exhibition Tightrope: Americans Reaching for Hope (see pp. 14–15), Skirball employees set out to write care notes to our neighbors at LA Family Housing. Recognized as an exemplary organization in the exhibition’s accompanying Action Guide, LA Family Housing helps people transition out of homelessness and poverty through a continuum of housing and supportive services. According to employees at LA Family Housing, receiving notes of goodwill and support can make a resident’s day, and that’s something to celebrate! But, with more than fifty thousand unhoused individuals in Los Angeles alone, there’s more work to be done. As we look forward to brighter days ahead, acknowledging the damage and loss of this past year, we hope you’ll join us in finding ways both big and small to support your community. Want to get involved with LA Family Housing? Learn more about their work at lafh.org! In addition to writing care notes, volunteer opportunities include delivering meals, hosting virtual game nights, and organizing donation drives. Sign up for a volunteer orientation and find something that moves you to make a difference!
