At the Skirball JUL/AUG 2019

PRESIDENT’S GREETING Music has the unique capacity to break down barriers and promote a sense of community. This alone underlines the importance of a free public concert series for the greater Los Angeles community. The Skirball’s Sunset Concerts have the added benefit of deepening the appreciation of musical traditions from distinctive cultures. The result is to bring together audiences that might not otherwise meet. Los Angeles is, in effect, a world population. Our Sunset Concerts model an artistic and communal ideal that inspires musicians and audiences alike. One of our city’s longest-running and most popular music series, Sunset Concerts at the Skirball began in 1996 as an experiment. Art and Dahlia Bilger, who helped to pioneer the Skirball Cultural Center as founding donors, were among the first to enjoy these concerts. Every year since, they have invited family and friends to join them for these performances of music under the stars, shared in an atmosphere of welcome and celebration. Now, thanks to a most generous sponsorship gift from Art and Dahlia, the Skirball can assure that these performances will welcome many thousands of visitors for many years to come. Their generosity is a magnificent expression of the Skirball’s mission, and a lasting gift to our community. Like the music itself, their kindness touches us all.

Uri D. Herscher

Founding President and CEO Skirball Cultural Center

OUR MISSION The Skirball Cultural Center is a place of meeting guided by the Jewish tradition of welcoming the stranger and inspired by the American democratic ideals of freedom and equality. We welcome people of all communities and generations to participate in cultural experiences that celebrate discovery and hope, foster human connections, and call upon us to help build a more just society.

Tuesday–Sunday 1:00–2:00 pm

Vanity Fair has dubbed 2019 a “Gernreichian moment”: celebrate it at the Skirball! Don’t miss your chance to see this first exhibition to focus on the social and cultural impact of designer Rudi Gernreich. Featuring more than eighty ensembles, from the “monokini” to the unisex caftan, Fearless Fashion: Rudi Gernreich illuminates how the designer created innovative designs that challenged conventional notions of beauty, identity, and gender. In addition to redefining style in ways that continue to influence fashion today, Gernreich also contributed to the burgeoning gay rights movement in 1950s LA and remained a lifelong activist and supporter of equal rights. EXHIBITIONS

Through September 1, 2019

BLACK IS BEAUTIFUL The Photography of Kwame Brathwaite Before the exhibition embarks on a national tour, come see the iconic images of one of the most influential cultural movements of the 1960s: “Black Is Beautiful.” This first-ever major exhibition dedicated to Kwame Brathwaite (b. 1938)—an until now under-recognized yet key figure of the second Harlem Renaissance—features over forty photographs of black women and men with natural hair and clothes that reclaimed and honored their African roots. During an era when segregation prevailed across the United States, Brathwaite combined his political vision with the medium of photography to effect social change. Today his work continues to exemplify how art can propel us toward greater equity and inclusion.

THROUGH A DIFFERENT LENS:

stanley kubrick PHOTOGRAPHS

For those who know him as a filmmaker, Stanley Kubrick’s early career as a photojournalist is a revelation. In 1945, the future director of such classics as 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968) and A Clockwork Orange (1971) was just a teenager—one with an uncanny photographic sensibility, who was scouting human-interest stories for Look magazine. Opening at the Skirball in October, this exhibition explores this formative phase in the career of one of the most influential figures in cinematic history. Organized by the Museum of the City of New York in collaboration with the SK Film Archives LLC.

April 30–September 6, 2020

Fifty years after a show with modest ratings called Star Trek first aired, its stories continue to echo worldwide. Its famous opening line, “To boldly go where no one has gone before,” encapsulates the heart of this iconic series: the dare to hope for a better world. Coming to the Skirball in spring/summer 2020, this fully immersive exhibition will showcase Star Trek’s significant impact on culture, society, arts, technology, and fashion through more than 100 rare artifacts, set pieces, and props, plus state-of-the-art photo and video interactives.
