In search of Impossible Elsewhere, a destination that hasn’t been mapped, apped or GAPed out? It’s not a desert island with room service, happy hour without the hangover, a tan without the consequences. It’s a place
Beyond the Horizon that’s forever out of reach, The Country of What Could Have Been, in the latitude of longing. It’s the dreams you gave up when you grew up. The whole wide world instead of your own backyard. The road you never walked. This month,
Bring a Little Elsewhere to your here and now. Pick one dormant dream and start to wake it up. Don’t print out directions or buy travel insurance. Risk being the stranger in the room, the pilgrim on the highway, the runaway bride. Home is always there, but Elsewhere might not wait.

A poet with a public servant’s heart, Eugene Platt is a native Charlestonian. riences, especially odes to his son and daughter, and late wife Mary, whom he lost prematurely to breast cancer. “In the summer I often go to Folly Beach for late afternoon swims—and to remember Mary, whose ashes were, at her request, distributed in the sea.” For Eugene, this year brings personal pride though: May marks exactly twenty years of elected service as a member of the James Island Public Service District Commission, and also brings the special election for Congressional District 1—for which he is the Green Party candidate. “Poetry and politics are my natural callings,” says Eugene, whose words have touched not only voters and poetry readers over the years, but also Lorcan and the staff at Lucey Mortgage. “Working with Lucey Mortgage was a pleasure. Brandi Bentley’s blend of competence and courtesy made the process of refinancing my mortgage absolutely painless.”

Single in Charleston? Michelle is an attractive, 40-something professional woman. Recently divorced, she’s decided it’s time to meet new people. Excited for a night on the town, early Saturday night Michelle calls up a few of her girlfriends to make plans. The first call is Jill, married with two kids. “Sorry, Michelle,” she says, “I am just so exhausted from work this week! Thanks, but I’m settling in for a quiet night with the husband.” Undeterred, Michelle makes a second call to her old college friend, Anna. Anna says she would go out but these days she is caring for her elderly mother and cannot afford the expense of an adult sitter. Okay, Michelle thinks, one more try – Sarah! Sarah is sure to be up for it because she is also divorced and her children are teenagers. But once again, “I’d love to, but both girls are home tonight and I haven’t spent much time with them.”
It occurs to Michelle just how much things have changed in the dating scene. Her friends have moved on and going out just isn’t the same as it was in her 20s. She pours herself a glass of wine and wonders how she’ll ever meet someone.
Ready to start dating again? Not sure where to begin? We’ll help you get back in the swing of things! These are common stories we hear every day, says Jennifer Hays of selectivewomen.com. When you’re ready to get out and meet again (like Michelle), there are very few venues that offer a safe and reliable way for busy professionals to meet interesting people, connect and form REAL relationships.
That’s why so many singles contact selectivewomen.com. Our relationship coaches screen and qualify applicants, assuring you that each member is mentally and emotionally ready to move ahead. That’s selective! After all, that’s why we are one of the area’s oldest and largest introduction services, from Savannah and Hilton Head to Charleston, Jacksonville and beyond.

S
tate Road A1A is straight and narrow—a long coastal Florida highway that ribbons down the Atlantic, dotted by biker bars, fried seafood joints, nail salons, RV campgrounds and of course, condos. I’ve been down this road before. Many times before. While I like to think I veer off the straight and narrow in many parts of my life, for the last 25 years, A1A is the road I have traveled down for short vacations, spring break, winter escapes, downtime and surf trips. Whenever the stars align and our family’s turn in our informal “time share” coincides with a school break or vacation, we pack the bikes, boards, tennis racquets and bathing suits and go to the condo that my in-laws bought with seven other couples in the mid-1980s when banks were dumping foreclosed properties and North Florida real estate was a steal. When I fantasize about my dream second-home, I envision a small cottage on the craggy coast of Maine, where rampant and unruly wildflower gardens are watered by sea spray bouncing off a rocky shore. There’s a cat curled up in a windowsill—and I am not even a cat person. I fancy myself as May Sarton or Ann Morrow Lindbergh, strong women bunkered on a fierce coast, warmed by their disciplined writing, rituals of morning strolls and afternoon tea and a steady stream of old friends dropping by. But here I am, in cheesy Florida condoland: home of bad architecture, garish billboards, bingo parlors and early-bird dinner specials. Instead of a cozy and weathered wooden cottage, this is a stucco-sided four-story condo high rise, painted mauve no less. Because it is shared among seven different families, the condo décor lacks any personal touches—no framed family photos, no books—just predictable beachy accents: shell-themed fabrics, lamps made of faux coral, prefab beach art. Surrounding houses here are trimmed in various shades of pink and blue, and someone has made a killing selling concrete mailbox stands shaped like Flipper the dolphin. And yet here I am, happily, grateful for the quick and easy getaway, the free place to stay, the generous dividend that my in-laws’ investment nearly a quarter of a century ago has paid for my family. For here it is that we have done most of our own time-sharing. It is the familiar place we come back to, year after year. For me it is like a Bikram yoga class (with similar heat and humidity)—the routine, the backdrop does not change, but the person who shows up does. These are the same wide, white-sand beaches I walked as a young bride-to-be, sizing up whether I might indeed find my place within this other family orbit. The beaches I walked as an exhausted young mother, as a grieving daughter, as a conflicted wife, as a striving writer. This is the same tennis court where my competitive nature would not always be pretty when playing against my brother- and sister-in-law, or against my own sisters when they came down to visit. This is the pool where my girls perfected their freestyle and first experienced the silly, silky pleasures of skinny-dipping. This is the setting where all the cousins gathered one August to celebrate my fatherin-law’s 60th birthday, and where my youngest daughter celebrated her first birthday, the same day my 96-year-old grandmother died. Surprisingly, despite its lack of personal warmth and character, this condo is like a doorframe marked with various family members’ heights etched in pencil. Often I feel I’ve done our children a disservice by not planning or budgeting for more adventurous trips that explore the wider world. I do love venturing into new frontiers. I want to broaden my horizon, and that of my children, but sometimes I also need the narrowed view. The recalibrated perspective that comes when I can strip away distractions of newness and sink into a familiar pose, a well-known place, to seek not adventure but respite, a return. To dip into the same old waters, whether the Atlantic Ocean, a condo pool, a deep well of memory, and come up refreshed. I’ve “been there, done that” here in Florida umpteen times: eaten fried alligator tail at Salt Water Cowboy more times than I can digest, gone to the dreaded outlet mall more times than I care to confess, sat on the beach drifting blissfully in and out of a novel and a nap never quite enough times. And still, each time, I am amazed and thankful for how freeing the repetition can be. I can handle mauve stucco when it comes with beautiful white-sand beaches and an endless show of pelicans gliding overhead, time and again, in their perfect formation and seemingly effortless ease. On their prehistoric wings, the pelicans remind me that “been there, done that” is a valid travel option. For eons they have maneuvered this same coastal ribbon of sand and dune with little variation in terrain, only shifting winds. Sometimes it is the straight and narrow, the tried and true, that reminds you who you are. Paul Roof is making moustaches matter. Paul took his experience growing goatees, chops and “exam” beards from college onward and turned it into a social connection, starting first with a MySpace page. In 2007, the Charleston Southern University professor found followers and founded the Holy City Beard and Moustache Society, with members that compete in various categories around the country and in-state. “Once you have a competition and start ranking people and giving them trophies, men will compete over just about anything.” The Society’s major event each May—the Southeastern Beard and Moustache Championships—supports Lowcountry Women with Wings, based out of the Center for Women. “I think it’s really positive when you see men doing something for women.” When they’re not boyishly battling, the mix of about 30 artists, educators, real estate agents and more meets monthly for pub nights at the Recovery Room, their home-base bar, and beyond. What do you like most about wearing a skirt? “It’s just like wearing a beard—it makes me stand out.” What do you like best about reading skirt!? “It gives me insight into the better sex.” 34

Taste of the Town Stop Lite Vending Machines
Vending machines are usually not the first place you’d go to get healthy foods, but if you work at a hospital or you’re visiting a patient, you often need to grab a quick snack on the go. MUSC has launched the Traffic Lite Vending program that offers healthier options in the vending machines. Every item in the vending machines is marked with a Red,Yellow or Green tab, just like stoplights on the street. The colors signify the nutritional value of the snack based on the Stop Lite Vending criteria for saturated fat, total fat and calories. It definitely helps you stop and think before pulling the lever.

Shacking Up
My mom is one of a few lucky people who win a lottery each year with the grand prize being a week’s summer stay in Euphoria or Zara or another of the whimsically named shacks that sit in a three-mile stretch of towering sand dunes.
M
Laurie Wilson
y mother lives in a shack. She has no running water, no toilet and the nearest road (and town) is a mile away. Her humble dwelling, fondly named “Euphoria,” has earned her bragging rights. In fact, she can say that she has shacked up with Eugene O’Neill, Norman Mailer and Jack Kerouac. My mom is one of a few lucky people who win a lottery each year with the grand prize being a week’s summer stay in Euphoria or Zara or another of the whimsically named shacks that sit in a three-mile stretch of towering sand dunes. Punctuated by beach grass and scrub pines, the remote strand is affectionately known as the Province Lands, part of Cape Cod’s National Seashore in Provincetown. The lottery is run by Peaked Hill Trust, a non-profit organization dedicated to the preservation and management of the no-frills shacks. When other moms call to tell their daughters that they’ve won the lottery, dollar signs come to mind. When mine calls to tell me that she has won the lottery, I know that she means another summer’s week in “paradise”—one of the humble wooden structures with an outhouse. Even though the amenities are virtually nonexistent, the shacks are considered so special that lucky lottery winners actually pay (a modest fee) to stay. But the views are, of course, priceless. “You feel you are at the end of the earth,” boasts Mom. That’s because you are, I remind her. You are so far removed from civilization that you can’t charge your cell phone to use in the event of an emergency (translation: a hurricane is coming in two days—better move out, or other less pressing situations like a broken ankle or, um, heart attack.) These shacks have had several lives. In the 19th century, they were built as a shelter for seamen of the Life Saving Service (pre-Coast Guard.). Later, they offered refuge for artists and writers to hunker down to commune with nature and create. And they still do.
My mother doesn’t spend the week in the dunes alone. She and a college friend, who is also a Peaked Hill Trust member, share the 9x12, one-room living quarters. Euphoria has a little deck where they paint, sip wine and soak in the million-dollar intoxicating water views. The shack’s amenities include pots, pans, silverware, beds, blankets and pillows as well as a two-burner hot plate and small refrigerator, both operated by a small propane tank located beneath the shack. There are lots of kerosene lanterns. To retrieve water, they must travel a short distance over a dune to a pump. An outhouse is a short distance away. Shack dwellers must, of course, also schlep their food in for the week, which typically means tuna fish, bread, pasta, sauce, cheese, peanut butter and jelly. If they’re really lucky, previous tenants might have left a bottle of wine or, even luckier, a bottle of Off. They also bring entertainment like a cribbage board, notebooks for journal entries and painting supplies to capture those stirring sunsets and advancing rainstorm clouds. But, Mom says, “You are really busy with the housekeeping, filling the kerosene and lighting the lanterns, pumping and carrying the water and doing the dishes.” There’s a shower of sorts—a contraption that looks like an enema bag that you fill with water and set it in the sun to warm. “The sunrises are amazing,” swears my mother who, being a night owl, can count the number of sunrises she’s seen in her lifetime. “Reading by candlelight in the shack has its limitations, so bedtime is early,” she reasons. Mom and her friend take lots of walks. And they spend time talking about their grandchildren, who cannot imagine a day, let alone a summer’s week, without Xbox, iPhones and Slurpees. My pioneer mother has won the dune-shack lottery five times, and I promise to visit each time. But I never have. That isn’t to say I don’t visit the Cape in the summer. I do. I shack up at Chatham Bars Inn and Ocean Edge Resort, two of the Cape’s plushest resorts. I’m a travel writer and have spent much of my life crisscrossing the globe with my son in tow. One day, a long time ago, upon returning from a stay at one of these lovely Cape inns, I overheard my fouryear-old son say to his playmate: “Okay, you go into the hall, and knock on my bedroom door, and when I say ‘Who is it?’ you say ‘Room service.’” That’s my boy!

Pink Collar Comedy features four rising stars who have been making a splash on the NYC comedy scene. "Pink collar" is a type of worker just like blue collar or white collar, only it refers to work said to be stereotypical women's work, typically in the service industry. These women are anything but typical, but they do provide the public service of making everyone laugh. They’ll be here for four Piccolo Spoleto performances from May 30 through June 2. The founder, Kaytlin Bailey, is a College of Charleston alum, so show up and give her some love. pinkcollarcomedytour.com

“Give me five years, just promise me five years,”
A
Angela La Voie
t best count, I have moved 27 times in my 43 years. For most of my life, I focused on how all that moving made me resilient, resourceful and adept at organization. I can walk into any home and see how I would decorate it, and I have a knack for efficient travel. Anyone can tell you that constant moving isn’t healthy, but it came about naturally enough. As a toddler, I moved from Ancon, Panama, and the U.S. military base where I was born to upstate New York. My family continued to move around as my father readjusted to civilian life. Eventually, we bought a small two-bedroom house. When my parents divorced, my mother and I could no longer afford the house, so we moved into her mother’s house, a white Cape Cod with gardens that looped and lined the perimeter. On approach to the house, roses flourished over an ugly metal arbor and even more roses bloomed from either side of the path. As a girl, I felt like a princess walking up that path of roses. The elaborate gardens for the tiny house were a product of my grandmother moving only twice in her lifetime, thus allowing her gardens plenty of time to mature. Her white Cape Cod, a gift from her parents, stood next door to the rustic farmhouse in which she was born. Though a house is an extravagant gift, my grandmother’s parents were not wealthy; they just understood the value of home. Both orphans from Hungary, they worked hard to buy various parcels of New Jersey farmland only to lose them during the Great Depression. They worked their way up again, bought new land and stayed there for the rest of their lives. They gave my grandmother the white Cape Cod in thanks for supporting them and her brothers through the Great Depression. For all but several years, my grandmother lived in that same house her parents gave her. Likewise, my mother quit moving after she remarried and has lived in the same house for 30 years. But I kept going. I moved out of my mother’s house when I graduated from college. It was too heartbreaking for me to stay in New Jersey, knowing my father lived there but didn’t want me in his life. I moved to Boston to find my way and then on to Santa Cruz, California, for more schooling, and then back east when family needs beckoned. Always, I was intending to get to Colorado, and eventually I did, and moved around Denver as I passed from one life stage to the next. And then I stopped moving. Newly married, my husband and I purchased our first home together. “Give me five years, just promise me five years,” he pleaded before signing the contract on the mid-century colonial with architecture that was a comfortable
reminder of our East Coast roots. I acquiesced. Five years seemed fair. A year later, I was injured in a near-fatal whitewater rafting accident that involved two years of recovery. I spent most of my time in that house as I worked hard at my physical and cognitive rehabilitation. Those years were filled with doubt and anxiety: Would I get better? How much better? Could I maneuver the stairs? Could we afford to stay in our house? Would there ever be a need for the four bedrooms? Yet that home was key in my recovery. I organized projects to improve the home’s beauty, safety and value. And I did as much of the work myself as I could—tiling, painting, landscaping, finding and managing contractors and sourcing materials. The activity helped my body and brain heal and kept up my spirits. During this time, I also drove my poor husband nuts considering places we might move to shake the nasty memory of my accident and the mountain cold—now less appealing. Judging a long-distance move untimely, I considered a local one. We could downsize and simplify, I thought. And so my husband and I met with our real estate agent, made a project plan to put our house on the market, and felt out the available inventory. We needed to finish the halfrenovated powder room and the front landscaping, complete other projects and make tweaks here and there. We set a deadline based on the start date of my graduate school program. I was going back to school to pursue the field I loved and had forsaken years ago to fit the notion of stability I had at the time, back before I had bought and sold my first property. This time, in the face of losing everything, I chose to pick up the writing career I had left behind years ago; but when it came to moving again, I found I couldn’t do it. I didn’t want to move out of the house. I wanted to move into it. I wanted to finish the half-done projects and just live in the house for a while. I wanted to learn to cook in double batches to have meals on hand in the freezer. I wanted to invite friends over when I wasn’t apologizing for some renovation in progress. I wanted to finish this renovation, however many years it might take. Instead of staging and decluttering, I made temporary messes everywhere as I sorted what no longer fit my new life. Finally, I was unable to pack any boxes except those for our yard sale and donation piles. Reflecting how loss and gain had influenced my personal and family history of moves, I decided to put my accident behind me by staying put so I could finish planting bulbs, roses and other perennials along the new front paths. I’d like to stay put long enough to see those flowers bloom. I’ve often reflected how my practice of moving has prepared me for our fast-paced world. What could I learn from moving slowly? What might I learn from taking root? What could I achieve by doing as much as I can in the place where I am? It’s time to call the real estate agent and tell him the news. It’s time I discover the answers. And I owe my husband at least one more year in this house.
Angela La Voie is a freelance writer in the Denver area whose work has been published in a variety of national and regional publications. She is currently at work on her first book, a memoir of how her recovery from a near-fatal whitewater accident led her to a creative, more authentic life. 62

Annie Van Harlingen is a gem of a jetsetter. The designer’s travels to Thailand, India, Brazil and beyond tempted her to jazz up the American jewelry market. A Fashion Institute of Technology grad, Annie gathered gemstones to create a fashionable and affordable collection. “I felt like there was a niche missing for precious and semi-precious cocktail rings.” Her website and The Spa at Charleston Place carry that new niche: Van H. “I try to pull little ideas from the cultures of the countries that I go to and sprinkle them into the collection somehow.” When she’s not abroad, she bounces between her studio in New York City and her house on Sullivan’s Island, so her selection features the bright blues, greens, and yellows popular to the South, plus the textured stones and darker tones that her northern clients crave. She says jewelry never gets old for men or women regardless of where they live. “They love to layer and add on and sometimes over-do, and I love that.”

Sally Robinson travels underwater. Whether off the shores of Charleston or in the Caribbean, the owner of Charleston Scuba sets her sights on what’s under the sea. “Diving is actually a lifestyle,” she says. Sally adapted to it 23 years ago, moving from marine biology to scuba instruction after her husband opened the business in a male-dominated diving industry. Now, she sees certification as a source of strength for female clients. “They get this feeling of confidence: Yes, they can dive, yes they can find the right buddy, yes they can continue to be certified at different levels, yes, they can be a dive master and yes, they can become an instructor.” Last year, she revised the divers’ destination options and signed up a women-only group for the inaugural Goddess Trip to Little Cayman. They added feminine touches with tiaras, blinking diamond rings, and a photo shoot. “When I go and travel with them, it’s like a moveable party.”

Miranda Marshall turns naughty into nice. The owner of Guilty Pleasures grew up around her family’s book and magazine distributing company in the adult industry, and now she sells love-life enhancers from lingerie, to lube, to liberator furniture. “The reality is that everybody has sex. Why do we have to hide it or be ashamed of it?” Miranda has her own guilty pleasure—she fell in love with Alaska years ago on a business trip and often maintains the store on Ashley Phosphate Road in North Charleston from her summer home. “You can do business anywhere. All you have to have is a phone and Wi-Fi connection.” And no matter where she is, she makes clients comfortable with the way they spice up their own connections. She markets guilty pleasures as guilt-free purchases, particularly for women. “It’s not weird, it’s just different. What you do in your bedroom is your business.”

Espadrilles are just a piece of canvas sewn to a rope sole, and yet they’ve endured in one form or another since the 14th century to become a fashion classic. When the Heart is Not Quite a Home
“I’ll move in eventually,”
M
Wilson Diehl
y future husband didn’t understand why I was stalling. Within months of our meeting, my cat, my upright mixer, and the better part of my shoe collection lived with him, but I refused to move myself all the way in. “This house is awesome. How can you not totally love it?” Jared asked, his tone suggesting a deeper anxiety that I might not totally love him. A beautiful old Craftsman with wood floors, box-beam ceilings, and occasional views of Mount Rainier and Lake Washington—what was not to love? On our second date, Jared gave me a tour and made a point of showing off the vintage airplane wallpaper lining the closet in one of the guest rooms. When I used the bathroom I had a vision of helping our future offspring wash their hands at the pedestal sink. I fell hard and fast for both the man and the house. But in the same way many men have dubiously argued it’s possible to have affections for more than one woman at once, I argued that my feelings for Jared’s house did not have to supersede my fondness for my own home to be legit. “I’ll move in eventually,” I promised, unsure of whether I meant it. For me, the fancy house was never the goal. Yes, I wanted a mate, and, yes, I wanted a home together. But while other women lust after prime real estate, for as long as I remember, I pined for a repurposed school building. My father was an English professor, and one of his graduate students made her home in one of the little clapboard one-room schoolhouses perched like wedding toppers on the Iowa countryside. When I was invited to visit as a child, the seed of a dream was planted. The coat hooks opposite the door, the chalkboards on the walls, the floorboards weathered from a hundred years of muddy, shuffling boots. Before long the seed had sent out tender, threadlike roots. When I returned to Iowa for graduate school, I spent my weekends driving gravel roads in search of old schoolhouses for sale. The one I eventually found had major problems—leaky roof, bad well, 1970s remodel job, mice infestation, rotting siding, and a septic “system” that piped raw sewage into a ditch out front—but at $50,000, who cared? Even a graduate student with no discernible savings could manage that. Plus—the coat hooks, the chalkboards, the floorboards. I was blinded by love. I put in a bid, but the seller changed her mind. She couldn’t bear to let it go. I understood perfectly. And I was heartbroken. When I moved to Seattle after graduate school, I came across a big old 19thcentury brick school building that had been converted into low-income artist housing. I walked up the worn marble stairs to the second-floor classrooms and
swooned. The wide hallways lined with lockers, the heavy wooden doors, the drawers marked Social Studies, Math, Reading—I had found my home. To gain residency I had to convince a committee that I was impoverished (underemployed filmmaker—check) and that I had long-term creative goals (I did) and an interest in participating in “the community.” Truthfully, I was nervous to live in a community of artists. I’d taken studio art classes in college and wasn’t eager to be subjected again to secondhand pot smoke and painfully slow conversations about what color I’d like to be if I could only eat food the color of my skin. I just wanted to have chalkboards for walls and for my antique textbook collection to feel at home. But within a few weeks I’d grown fond of the drumbeats throbbing along the hallways and the smell of paint and hot glue and epoxy. Or at least I was fond of what the sounds and smells represented. Even though I was the only resident prose writer, the musicians and painters and sculptors accepted me as one of their own. Even the performance artists turned out not to be scary. It wasn’t a commune, but a building of 32 separate apartments with doors that lock and everything. We could have been as distant and isolated as people living in any big-city apartment complex, but we weren’t. Everyone knew everyone else’s name and thought nothing of walking a neighbor’s dog, offering a glass of inexpensive wine, acting like it was no big deal that “Melissa” was taking hormones and prepping for surgery to become “Mike.” After dating seriously for a year, why was I still paying rent for an apartment I only visited occasionally instead of moving into a lovely old house with the man I was going to marry? I was scared of losing myself, my surprising newfound identity as a scrappy artist-type, and my motley little community—not to mention the chalkboard walls and locker-lined halls. Four months after Jared proposed on a quiet Hawaiian beach, I finally rented a U-Haul and moved the last of my things to his house. I thought I’d packed everything up, but each time I opened a drawer, it turned out to be still half-full of stuff—like I wasn’t really ready to leave. Jared got it all onto the truck, piece by piece, while I wiped down the appliances, swept the floor, and wrote a note on the chalkboard welcoming the next tenant with forced cheer. Everything arrived at my new home intact—books, furniture, the globe from the one-room school my grandmother attended in the middle of Iowa nearly a century ago. At least that’s what I thought until I went to make cookies for Jared and couldn’t find my tin of heart-shaped cookie cutters, each nestled inside the next like industrial matryoshka dolls. I turned the house upside down, obsessively determined to find them—to no avail. I cried one last time for everything I’d left behind—hearts and all—and then, finally embraced my new life. Our house does not have chalkboard walls or pre-labeled drawers or lockers lining the walls, but it contains the man I love and our two daughters—and a vintage card catalogue that will always remind me of home.
Wilson Diehl has an MFA in creative nonfiction from the University of Iowa. Her work has appeared in Salon, Babble, Fit Pregnancy, and elsewhere. She lives in Seattle and is writing a book about the things they don’t tell you about motherhood or marriage until it’s too late. You can keep tabs on her at notquitewhatiexpected.net. 84

xoxonikki Just before dusk on a recent walk, I cut through Hallelujah Lane in the local cemetery and noticed that every tree, bush and vine had leafed out in tender lettuce-luscious green overnight. Hopeful and eager and unjaded. Who cares that it's been happening for thousands of years? It's a story that always seems fresh and new and takes us completely by surprise. Spring again?! Hallelujah.
