APRIL Charleston, SC
Escape the ordinary
Don’t tell us you’re not a superwoman! You’re at your best in a crisis. It’s April. The downpours come, but you’ve been around town long enough to know how to get around the streets that flood. Your hurricane pantry is fully stocked. You know how to change a tire, check your oil, and use your AAA card. You can fix what’s broken with super glue, duct tape, or a quick phone call. You can heal what hurts with time, a Band-Aid, a kiss and a hug. You’re always the one with the safety pin, the stain remover pen, the hemming tape, the airline miles to fly you and a friend whose heart needs mending to a faraway island where they put paper umbrellas in your drinks. You give away your super secrets because they might make someone else’s life easier. You’re the friend who holds your friends’ hands through their crises, and you don’t do it because you expect anything in return. You’re the rescuer—you stopped waiting for Prince Charming to come along on a white horse a long time ago (and if he did you probably rescued him). You and you alone are the heroine of your life story. And it can be as amazing as your imagination can make it.

Single in Charleston?
Ready to start dating again? Not sure where to begin? We’ll help you get back in the swing of things! These are common stories we hear every day, says Jennifer Hays of CharlestonSinglesSearch.com. When you’re ready to get out and meet again (like Michelle), there are very few venues that offer a safe and reliable way for busy professionals to meet interesting people, connect and form REAL relationships.
That’s why so many singles contact CharlestonSinglesSearch.com. Our relationship coaches screen and qualify applicants, assuring you that each member is mentally and emotionally ready to move ahead. That’s selective! After all, that’s why we are one of the area’s oldest and largest introduction services, from Savannah and Hilton Head to Charleston, Jacksonville and beyond.

For our “Survival” issue, we have amazing advice from women right here in Charleston (along with their morning routines because we just love to know what people do when they wake up). We’re excited to share with you, and you just might know or work with some of these empowering women. The hardest part was narrowing the list down to 12! We also have A-Z advice for surviving a treacherous day, inspiration from this issue’s essay contributors, an open letter to the smartphones that make

Plus, our Women at Work special section highlights women in our community who are doing amazing things and it’s an easy way for you to empower other women by using their services. We survive and thrive on you, on the women in this issue who opened up to give us a glimpse of how successful women handle challenges. Your endless updates and snappy ad campaigns truly wow us, but really all the talk about the latest and greatest, bigger and better, sleeker and slimmer is getting in the way of our “less is more” policy. Contrary to what you might think, we do indeed judge people by the amount of time they spend with you versus the time they spend with us. When we had lunch with that potential new friend we met in spin class and she didn’t take her hand or eyes off her phone the entire time? We moved along. That new guy we had coffee with who kept his phone in his pocket during our very interesting conversation? We’ll probably marry him. So here are some thoughts we thought you could toss around. How about iPhone-free zones? We could start with restaurants, concert venues and grocery store lines. Anyone who broke the rule would be banished to a faraway land. Or at least the parking lot. How about you set your schedule so that we only have to download your crucial updates just once a month? You ask too much of us already. Patience. And as for creating new models and accessories—slow down. Maybe we already have what we want and need. Don’t trick us into thinking we need more. At least, not so frequently. If the rumors are true, we can expect the iPhone 7 to arrive in mid-September 2015. So maybe there’s still time to squeeze in a few of our own ideas. A home screen that locks for 24 hours at the scent of alcohol, a sound level lock that we can put on our children’s phones so they are not deaf before they are legal. And a self-cleaning feature of some sort. My fingerprints are always smudging up the screen. And if you wouldn’t mind addressing some of the labor problems your companies have with outsourcing. Sure, the labor is cheap, but let’s value humanity over digital hype, hmm? How about fewer updates and more ethical practices?... Now about those ringtones... let’s add the cork of a champagne bottle or the burst of party poppers. We think it’s time to put “cricket” and “by the seaside” to rest.

We Asked 14 Marketers
How to Make it as a Woman in Business.
Sunday, March 8th, was International Women’s Day—a holiday observed since the early 1900s when expansion and new ideas in the industrialized world led to a massive change in the conversation about the rights of women. Here we are in 2015, and the situation is sobering: • Women account for two-thirds of all working hours and produce half the world’s food, but earn only 10% of global income and own 1% of property. • Women account for nearly two-thirds of the world’s 780 million people who cannot read. • Globally, only one in five parliamentarians are women. Here in the U.S., progress made to shatter the glass ceiling has slowed to a crawl. As Sheryl Sandberg explained in 2013, “women have had 14% of the top corporate jobs and 17% of the board seats for 10 years. Ten years of no progress.” Clearly, there’s work to be done. This year, the theme of this global event is “make it happen.” With a global focus on women’s rights, especially in the business world, I was inspired to join the larger conversation and add the perspective of women I’ve seen make it happen every day. They are inspiring marketing leaders who have adeptly navigated success in a business environment not always encouraging to women. I asked each of them, “If you could go back in time and tell your younger marketing self how to ‘make it happen,’ what advice would you give? What advice would you give young women entering the workplace, especially in a marketing role?”

Take gender/ age/job level off the table. Make your success about your hard work and talent.” Maribeth Ross
Stephanie Tilton, Principal/Marketing Writing Consultant, Ten Ton Marketing
Maribeth Ross, Chief Content Officer and Managing Director at Aberdeen Group
Take the mandate to be a data-driven marketer a step further and apply it to your own career journey. Understand your company’s strategic objectives inside and out and how marketing will contribute, and then map out your specific role in it all. Wherever possible, associate metrics with your own responsibilities and goals, and tout your successes in the framework of the bigger picture.
Ladies, the best advice I can give you to “make it happen” in marketing really has nothing to do with marketing at all. Rather, the advice that comes from my experience surviving and thriving in the business world amid all the media coverage around women’s rights and issues such as pay equality is simple: your gender does not matter.Yep, I said it.
Raise your hand at every opportunity to soak up new knowledge and develop yourself into a well-rounded marketer who can handle anything thrown her way. Develop your personal brand by creating the story of you and crafting your own perspective on today’s marketing landscape— then share that at marketing events and in the online social sphere at every turn.
Here are my Five Rules for Making it Happen, listed in no particular order. 1.You can be anything you want to be. 2. There is no substitute for hard work. 3. Don’t take crap. 4. Take your integrity seriously. 5. Be you.
“Wherever possible, associate metrics with your own responsibilities and goals, and tout your successes in the framework of the bigger picture.” Stephanie Tilton
“Have a passion or vision and go for it. I fully believe that if you don’t ask, you don’t get.” Melanie Berger
Melanie Berger, Owner/Designer at Mariwear As for International Women’s Day, I have to say that I am one who lives for and around karma. I’m all about having a passion or vision and going for it. I fully believe that if you don’t ask, you don’t get. The quote I used that night has been used before my time but this is truly my belief: “Believe in your idea, trust your instincts and don’t be afraid to fail”.This has been used by Sara Blakely of Spanx and many others.

“Ignore the titles, job descriptions and requirements you see today— especially the ones that try to define you as a particular kind of marketer.” Kim Donlan
Kim Donlan, CEO of RedSwan5 Ignore the titles, job descriptions and requirements you see today —especially the ones that try to define you as a particular kind of marketer. Focus instead on talking to everyone about what you are curious about. This will transcend the conversation from your current skill set directly to your passion. A fascinated marketer will quickly acquire whatever skill she needs to pursue her passion and begin to shape her career around who she is rather than what she does.
Samantha Stone, Founder & Senior Analyst, The Marketing Advisory Network As a young professional I was naturally driven, tripped my way into finding fantastic mentors and was known for solving problems and multi-tasking. I’m proud of what I accomplished but disappointed I didn’t savor the journey. Instead of enjoying a sense of satisfaction I was alway anxious to move forward to the next challenge. While I worked with talented peers I never fully trusted anyone but myself. I attended EVERY meeting just to make sure my team didn’t miss anything important. When a teammate missed a deadline I jumped in and did it for them. When their writing was less than perfect I fixed it for them rather than provide guidance for them to address. I was exhausted and never paused. Youthful energy made it look on the outside like it was easy, but inside I was burning myself out. It took me many years to internalize that success is not a solo sport. No one can scale their impact without trusting Samantha Stone peers—imperfections and all.
Courtney Kay, VP, Field & Product Marketing at TechTarget As a woman in business I wish someone had sat me down early and said “stop thinking of yourself as a woman in business.” No man would ever define himself as “a man in Business.” Defining who you are by the amazing thing you do is the first piece of advice I would give to any woman… me, I’m a marketer, and I love it. The second piece of advice (which an amazing mentor taught me) would be to not worry about being right but about getting what you want. Women so often feel the need to prove themselves and be right. It’s exhausting and frankly, a waste of time. The best leaders are the leaders who never lose sight of the end game, and do what it takes to get there, giving credit where credit’s due and attributing that to the team members who make it happen...this is particularly important in marketing, where what we do is half art, half science— there’s rarely a “right” answer. Elevate the great ideas. Which leads me to my third piece of advice: support other women! Somehow we are far harder on our female peers and often look at everything they do with criticism first and appreciation second... reverse that, and make it constructive. “A rising tide lifts all boats...” or something like that... and finally, stop apologizing. Make the decisions you’re proud of, support the causes you believe in, and don’t apologize for either.
“Success is not a solo sport. No one can scale their impact without trusting peers— imperfections and all.”
“Stop thinking of yourself as a woman in business. Don’t worry about being right. Elevate great ideas. Support other women. Stop apologizing.”

“Don’t wait until you’re 100% ready to try something. You will never be totally ready for anything that stretches your boundaries.” Amy Bills
Amy Bills, Marketing Director at Blackbaud I wish I could tell my younger self (or any young woman) not to wait until you’re 100% ready to try something. Whether it’s going for a promotion, running a half marathon, starting a part-time business:You will never be totally ready for anything that stretches your boundaries. This is a big difference between how men and women think. Men, in general, will go for it if they can check maybe 60% of the “are you ready?” boxes. While women wait…and wait…to check every box. Do. Not. Wait. If something seems appealing to you, if you can imagine yourself doing it, that is your mind telling you to “go.” That’s why Nike’s slogan has lasted so long. It’s a recipe for moving forward.
“Buckle in, raise your hands high, and don’t let fear make any decisions for you.” Heather Meza
Heather Meza, Founder & Principal Consultant, The Marketing Evolutionist Rarely will your career follow a simple and projected path straight up. It’s more like a roller coaster ride than a ladder. My advice? Buckle in, raise your hands high, and don’t let fear make any decisions for you. Don’t wait for opportunities, make them! Take calculated risks. You’ll regret what you DON’T do more than the things you do. Experiment until you find what really moves you. And remember: there is no losing, only winning and learning—so enjoy the ride!
“Follow your instincts, ignore naysayers and always be true to yourself.” Jenviev Azzolin
Jenviev Azzolin, Founding Partner at pplconnect Oftentimes the hardest critic you’ll face is yourself. Try to harness that energy into building your drive and momentum. Ignore the rules and the guidelines of what “you’re supposed to do” and define your own. Follow your instincts, ignore naysayers and always be true to yourself.

JEAN Serra, Founder and Partner, Version 2.0 Communications
You may be surprised. My younger self wasn’t a marketer. I was a general manager in the hospitality industry. Usually the only woman in the room at association meetings. It was unusual in the late 80s and early 90s for women to hold that position. I ran hotels and country clubs. Of course that included marketing, but that was only one role. I think it helped me immensely because I had the bigger view of the business and was responsible for the P&L, HR, F&B, etc. The whole thing. When I made the transition to GM of country clubs that included oversight of the golf course. I had to learn fast and be bold to keep my job. But that was probably the best training I could have had for becoming a marketer.
The best advice I ever got was given to me at the very beginning of my career and it is what I pass along to colleagues who seek out my counsel: Listen to your gut.
When I think about my career, I feel very lucky and appreciative. First, to the women who’ve come before me and paved the way in the workplace. I entered the agency world well after the “Mad Men” era where women had to fight for a voice and a seat at the table. And, given my professional focus in PR, I have been fortunate to be surrounded by smart, successful role models at every stage of my career. These women, both colleagues and clients alike, have taught me so much about the craft of communications and business, management and mentorship. I’m also enormously grateful to my parents who always encouraged and supported me academically and professionally. They helped me put my education first and served as my cheering section when I considered new jobs or professional endeavors, including the scary proposition of starting my own business.
It wasn’t until I was running a startup marketing technology company in 2000 that I really dove head first into marketing while working with clients and discovering how bad things were with content. It’s likely that not coming up through the marketing ranks helped because I didn’t have many preconceived ideas or constraints about what was possible. Of course, having an English degree and being a die-hard writer also helped immensely. My advice to younger marketers is to learn all you can and keep learning and to take risks. As they say, if you don’t try, you don’t get. It’s the chances I took that built my career. I still learn things every day. With change as the norm, it’s the only way forward. And one other thing—customer first—always. The best skill you can have is to get out of your head and into your customer’s mindset. That was true in hospitality management and it’s true in marketing.
When you do, you won’t go wrong. Ever. And the wonderful thing is that the more you listen, the louder it gets and the easier it is to “hear.” Your instinct is the combination of your intelligence, your experience and the ephemeral signals you’re picking up from your environment and those that populate it. It is your biggest asset. Learn to cultivate it and use it. You will never regret a decision that you make that is based on your gut feeling.
Ann McGuire, Senior Product Manager, BuyerZone Coworkers. Mentors. Inspiration. Often in the beginning, I found myself wondering what I was really going to do with my career, how I could shape it, and who would give me the chance to shape it. This struggle was mine, and so I thought, mine alone. My research, though critical, could only get me so far. If only my younger self knew that [most] coworkers love sharing what they do, their struggles, their passion and their goals. I started asking questions, walking around the office and meeting people I’d never spoken to or overlapped with before. Learning different aspects of the business soon connected me with one of my “forever mentors” and my inspiration and creativity grew from there. Don’t be afraid to explore within your current company and role to help shape and build your own foundation.
“Don’t be afraid to explore within your current company and role to help shape and build your own foundation.”
So, if I had to look back and give my younger marketing self some advice, I’d say—think big, take risks and don’t worry so much! Surround yourself with great people that you can learn from and don’t be afraid to seek out mentors to ask for advice and help. Oh, and remember to celebrate the successes (big and small) and enjoy the ride.
Ann Handley, Chief Content Officer, MarketingProfs Never underestimate the value of poking your nose out. I used to think if I was bright enough or hard-working enough or talented enough...success would find me organically. Or magically. That’s not quite right, though:You still have to be bright and hardworking and talented… but you have to put yourself out there, too.You have to create your own opportunities. No one is going to invite you. There’s some luck involved (that’s the second thing we shouldn’t underestimate), but there’s no magic. Also, never underestimate the value of relationships—personal and professional. Everything I’ve accomplished has been as much because of a key relationship or two as it was because of me. And finally, never underestimate the value of a good night’s sleep.

The morning of the wedding, a stylist from the salon came to Judy’s home to do her hair. My sister is one of that rare breed of women who look better and better as they age. They grow into good looks over time like the rest of us grow out of them. She’s figured out over the years how to dress in a casually elegant manner, she knows the best cut for her hair type and she is not afraid to play with color. She has large almond-shaped brown eyes and an exotic look that, in her fifties, still draws admiration from members of the opposite sex. Did I mention she’s been skinnier than me forever? And she has very few wrinkles, just pretty little crow’s feet that, get this, add character to her face when she smiles. So when her hair was done in a pretty upswept do and she got her make-up just right and put on her elegant Mother of the Groom outfit, she was pretty stunning. There have been times when I’ve felt hurt that my grooming and fashion sense never seem to live up to my “Who are you?” sister’s standards, but I try not to take it personally. She really is trying to help. My sister likes that stuff more than I do, and it’s an important part of her self- image, the way painting a good painting or writing a good poem is to mine. udy and I have spent our entire adult lives living on opposite coasts, and it’s coming up on a year since the last time I saw her. The older we get, the harder it gets to travel back and forth cross-country to see each other, but it gets more important to make the effort with each passing year. I hope I’ll get out to see her sometime soon. And when I meet her at the airport and she looks at me and squints her eyes and tells me she can do something with my hair or she has some great product she can’t use that might work for me, I’ll just smile and nod my head and tell her “Thanks sis, I love you too.”

Thousands of feet above us hung tons of heavy wet snow waiting in their cut paths of granite, and I hadn’t even had any caffeine. But believe me, I was alert and present the whole time. And there was never a doubt as to whether I’d do the story. Of course I would. It was assigned; it was my job. I’m not alone in my life outside the clickable box. There are many of us. We might live in our trucks. We might work in a seasonal tourist town so we can have the off-season to travel, following a mention of a great character in the next town over. We might spend two whole days with a community of people without electricity or running water, sucking said water up through a garden hose from a plastic blue barrel to simulate recently ap“running water” when it’s our turn plied for a full-time position that used to do dishes. Catie Dunn, Associate Attorney at the Steinberg Law Firm, LLP, perpetual snooze button offender and bride-to-be.
I wake up at 5:45 a.m. by alarm, no music please…I am not a great morning person. I normally get 6 to 7 hours of sleep (I just wish it was consecutive). A shower is the first order of business...it is my morning pick me up prior to my first cup of coffee. I don’t watch much TV, but enjoy listening to country music.
I wake up at 5:08 am, or 5:17 am, or 5:31 a.m. I throw on some Lululemon, grab my gym bag, and head to MUSC for my workout. I value every minute of sleep (or 8 minute snooze cycle) I can get, so packing a bag and selecting my work outfit the night before is a must. After my workout, I shower and get ready at the gym while watching “The Today Show.”
Being an empty nester and traveling frequently, I prefer to work out in the morning. My biggest challenge is disconnecting and finding “me” time, but when I do I enjoy spending time with my family. I have a wonderful husband and two great sons. I also enjoy reading. The last thing I do before going to sleep is—reflect on my day and count my blessings. Kelly Alfred, Attorney, Steinberg Law Firm, super snoozer. I am not a morning person so sometimes I feel like I barely survive mornings. Therefore, my morning routine is usually the same and I keep it simple. On average I get about 7-8 hours of sleep. My alarm wakes me up at 6:30 a.m. but I hit the snooze button at least twice. I like my mornings quiet and peaceful so I don’t turn on the radio or the TV. I shower, dry my hair, and apply makeup. I try to pick out and steam my outfit the night before so I don’t end up ripping my closet apart in the morning. My jewelry is usually diamond stud earrings and my wedding rings. After I am dressed, I go to the kitchen where I give my dogs some treats and make breakfast. I am not a coffee drinker and my breakfast is usually the same. Some days I will make hard boiled eggs, some days I have English muffins with sunflower butter, and sometimes I make smoothies or green juice. I hardly ever skip breakfast!
When I get to work between 8 and 8:30 a.m., I eat breakfast (oatmeal with almond milk and Splenda brown sugar) and have my coffee while I catch up on emails and voicemails. Working out in the morning keeps me energized. Plus, I leave work each evening knowing that my exercise is done for the day, and I can go home to relax with my fiancé and a glass of wine!
Dr.Tracy L. Cordray, Plastic & Reconstructive Surgeon, yogi and very light sleeper. NOT a morning person. Surprising that I would become a surgeon with 7:30 a.m. OR (operating room) start times. On surgery days, I arise at 5:30 a.m. (UGH!) and head straight for the coffee pot. I don’t speak until I’ve had my one cup of coffee. I dip two pieces of Grainiac organic bread (toasted) in my coffee every morning. After coffee, I brush my teeth, wash my face, throw on my scrubs, and rush out the door. I apply minimal makeup in the car...usually in the parking garage at Roper Hospital. My face is covered by a mask most of the day anyway. Why bother spending too much time on it? The one thing in my morning routine I would never skip is reading my daily devotion from Max Lucado’s book, Grace for the Moment, which sets my feet on the right path. I get my exercise in the evening. I practice Ashtanga yoga 5 days a week at 5:45 p.m. I love to strengthen/stretch my muscles after a long day in the OR. It feels oh-so-good. My work can often be very stressful, and my yoga practice brings me inner peace. I’m a better doctor thanks to my yoga practice. The last thing I do before I go to bed at night: Kiss my boyfriend. Best part of my day.
Nancie Geddings, Owner of Live the GoodLife, wife, mom to 65-pound rescue lab, certified wellness coach, personal fitness & barre trainer, bootcamp enthusiast who loves food & travel. I’m an early riser at 5 a.m. I drink a large glass of water first thing in the morning to jump start my body’s hydration process. If I didn’t shower the night before I will hop in the shower and depending on time I may wash my hair. If not, I use a dry shampoo that has to be one of the best inventions ever. Wardrobe selection is easy since I can just throw on workout clothes, which I love! Then I usually head straight for a cup of joe with a hint of coconut milk creamer and a few sprinkles of cinnamon, which is great for lowering blood sugar. While I’m enjoying my coffee I whip up a smoothie with a handful of spinach, protein power, nut butter, banana, flax seed and coconut milk. Depending on what’s in the fridge I may add some other type of fruit and sometimes cacao nibs as an extra treat. Morning meditation is a daily ritual and I have a variety of guided meditations depending on how I’m feeling or sometimes I just sit quietly for 10-15 minutes. I’m out of the door by 6:30 a.m. to meet with clients. My bedtime routine starts around 9 p.m., I like to read before bed, which always seems to put me right to sleep.
Rebekah Jacobs, Founder and Owner of Rebekah Jacobs Gallery. I wake up naturally, if I don’t stay up all night working on projects, reading or writing. I can sleep when I’m dead. I don’t set an alarm; it’s a pet peeve of sound, and I get about 4-5 hours of sleep at night on average. I grab a coffee then hit the pavement for a long run or head to the yoga studio. I run to a personal mix of upbeat, inspirational tunes. The Boss (Bruce Springsteen) is ubiquitous on the playlist. I exercise in the morning...by day’s end my energy is spent and I’m ready for a large pour of bourbon! I prepare lists for my staff so they have a head’s up of tasks when they walk in the gallery door. They are always on my mind, as I strive to mentor them and encourage them so they grow, learn, and innovate within RJG. My favorite get-ready-fast trick in the morning is to wear all black—Lululemon tights, Ralph Lauren turtleneck, and leopard booties, plus a generous application of red lipstick. I’m at my desk around 9 a.m. with coffee and Twitter news feeds. I never work from home. I’m exponentially more creative, organized, disciplined and efficient at my gallery desk, a gift from sculptor/furniture maker Bill Long. The last thing I do before bed is list 10 things of which I am grateful.
Amy Brennan, Executive Director at Center for Women. Mom of college students, wife and community cultural events fanatic. My husband is a teacher so we have been early risers most of our married lives. Also, from my early years of being a swimmer, I am used to waking up early and working out. I wake up and hit the gym by 5:30 a.m.. Workout done! I wake up to an alarm‚but it must be music. I like to hear Ingrid Michaelson sing “Can’t Help Falling In Love” because it is special for me and my husband. I like to get at least 6 hours of sleep once I hit the pillow. I listen to “The Today Show” as I am getting dressed and out of the door. I love my time after my workout is over and I get to relax and drink a cup of coffee while watching the news. I drink coffee. I begin working immediately as part of my wake up process while I am getting ready to work out by checking email and Facebook posts. Breakfast comes a few hours later when my appetite wakes up. I eat oatmeal or something small at the office.
Dr.Vicki Tatum, Cosmetic and General Dentist, morning person. I wake up at 6:30 a.m. naturally. The first thing I like to do is turn on the TV and listen to the weather and news while I am getting up. I am always in a good mood when I wake up. I am definitely a morning person. On my work days, I always shower in the morning and that gets me ready for the day. I don’t have any tricks for running late because I always run late. I start seeing patients at 8 a.m. on Mon-Thurs. I leave my house at 7:30 a.m. and drink a protein shake on the way. The last thing I do before I go to bed is watch Jon Stewart, but I usually don’t make it through his show before I am asleep!
Laura Patrick, Co-Owner and Chief Marketing Officer of Bay Street Biergarten, wife, attorney, night owl.
Catherine South, Architect, Interior Designer & VP, Dolphin Architects and Builders.
Being in the food and beverage business, I usually have late nights and wake up naturally around 9 or 10 a.m. First thing I do in the morning is feed my two dogs, Joey and Keiko, who usually act as my alarm anyway. I spend the first hour of the day checking and responding to work emails. I usually make breakfast/lunch around 10 a.m. and 9 times out of 10 it’s bacon and eggs (Ron Swanson approved) and chat with Andrew, my husband, and get centered for the day. I usually have a cup of coffee, but my biggest energizer is exercise.
I wake up at 6:30 a.m. and my alarm is a 75-pound chocolate Lab on my head. My Fitbit says I get 5 hours of sleep a night, but I’m not so sure. The first thing I do in the morning is get coffee. I’m an empty nester, so I don’t have to get anyone else ready in the morning, but if I’m running late my favorite quick trick is to put my hair up in a clip. I work all the time; I never stop answering emails. I always give my cute husband Jonathan a hug before we both leave for work. I prefer to exercise in the evening and wind down by watching Netflix (current favorite: “House of Cards”) and the last thing we do before bed is watch an old episode of “Cheers.”
Around 11, I either take my bike for a spin while listening to Beyoncé or catch an episode of “Scandal” on my elliptical. By 1:30, I’m usually gathering my stuff to head out the door and if I’m running late, I’ll throw my makeup in the car and finish getting ready at the Biergarten. What time I’ll get back home that night, I never know, but I always end my day curled up on the couch with my husband and a glass of wine.
Virginia L. Gregory, DMD, Smile Artist, early riser.
My day starts with an alarm on my iPhone that rotates between “On the Floor,” “Vogue,” “Stereo Love,” or a normal alarm. Getting ready for work is very utilitarian for me—not a lot of fluff or extra time spent on anything except preparing for work. I get out of bed, shower, get dressed, put on a little makeup and jewelry, gather my things fairly quickly then hit the road for a 25-minute commute. I save my first cup of coffee for when I get to work. A light breakfast may be eaten in the car (cheese, fruit) or when I get to the office.
I wake up on weekdays at 5:45 a.m. by the silent vibration alarm on my Fitbit wristband, which my husband loves because it doesn’t wake him! According to that Fitbit, I average about 8 and a half hours of sleep per night. When I first get up I grab a cup of coffee...I could not wake up without at least two big cups. Lately I’ve been spending the next 30 minutes or so doing a yoga-like stretching/ strengthening routine for my lower back and core. That has really made my back feel better and gets me revved up for the day. Sometimes I will look at emails or Facebook if I have time. Next I’m into the shower. I like to listen to upbeat music on the I Heart Radio app on my iPhone, or lately I’ve been listening to iTunes podcasts that my daughter recommends. I’m out the door by 7:40 and at work by 8 a.m. I generally eat breakfast at the office. This year my weekday breakfast is a half cup of cottage cheese mixed with blueberries and mixed nuts. On weekends I love to eat eggs!
During my drive, I listen to NPR. My favorite: StoryCorps on Fridays at 6:25 and 8:25 a.m. These stories about people connect me to the work ahead for the day—healthcare is all about doing what we can to help people. It’s extremely rewarding.
After work I will either walk/jog or go to spin class. My husband and I enjoy cooking together... or rather he cooks and I clean... We like to watch “on demand” TV series for a while then go to bed early. Our labradoodle Baxter snuggles between us and it’s lights out.
Pam Brock, Vice President, Marketing & Public Relations, Trident Health. Mom, daughter, sister, professional, light sleeper.

Dr. Christopher Hults is a lifesaver. The new Trauma Medical Director at Trident Medical Center is more than qualified. Dr. Hults spent 11 years in the Navy and was on active duty until last year, when he moved from Tampa to Charleston. Currently in the reserves, he has an extensive background in handling critical trauma cases, including seven months as chief of trauma in Kandahar, Afghanistan. He had a reason for serving in the military. “We place a tremendous burden on our troops and I wanted to be part of bringing them home safely, and training the men and women who are medics on the front lines for exposure to combat medicine so we can bring them home, too.” He finished active duty at Tampa General, before making the move to the Lowcountry. “It was time to settle down and I had a great opportunity to head up the trauma unit at Trident. I want to be able to spend my ‘off time’ with my wife and kids.” His time spent in service has given him a positive outlook going into his new medical mission at home. “To be able to get to the multi-injured blast patients, get them stabilized in the field by well-trained medics, get them to the trauma center, and home in just a few days is something we can do now that we could not 50 years ago.”

The Bully in the Hairdressing Salon
Temma Ehrenfeld
I
Dashing out, I took someone else’s brown down coat. You know these coats; in cities, you see five to a dozen women wearing them on every block. The year before, someone had taken mine by mistake. I didn’t notice that I had the wrong coat until three hours later when I found keys in the pocket. Guessing that it belonged to a friend who had stopped by in the afternoon, I immediately emailed her (the fastest way to reach her). She didn’t answer until the next morning, a Friday, when she said they were not hers. Oh, gee, then the great coat mix-up could have happened at yoga, or the nail or hair salon. My interview was early. I concentrated on preparing for it and to my credit (I think) as soon as my interview was over and I was back in the neighborhood, I walked into the salon and asked a woman at the cash register, “Did anyone report a missing coat with keys in the pocket? I have it!” f you see something, say something” is It was Friday afternoon; the place was packed with waitplastered on signs all over New York City. It’s meant to tell us to ing customers. The woman at the register went to speak to the report stray parcels that might contain bombs. The same meswoman who had done my hair and now glared at me. “Why sage should apply to bullying. didn’t you call?” she said loudly, so all could hear. Bullying is everywhere, not just in schoolyards or on the “I’m sorry. I didn’t know where to call,” I said. “This was just Internet. And people should intervene. one place of a few it could have been. I’ll go get it now,” I said. My first boss, the editor of a small magazine, was a famous I returned in 10 minutes. As soon as I walked in, one of the bully. Whenever I spoke to former staffers or freelance writers waiting customers whispered to me, “She’s very irritated.” Some who knew him, they’d drop their voices and say, “How are you scene had occurred in the salon while I was gone. I was ushered holding up?” to the back, where the sinks are. She was washing a Me: “Well, the other day he told me I wasn’t as customer’s hair. This all came back last winter when I encountered a bully in As it turned out, she had taken my coat home and left it a hair salon and bonded with other victims. there. I was anxious about an interview the next day and rushing. The message was clear: I would get my coat back if I offered I took a yoga class to calm my nerves, got my nails done and to pay for the new one she had bought. I said, “When you bring walked into a nearby salon I’d never tried. I received an excelmy coat back, we can work out how to handle the cost of the lent cut from a tall woman with a big bust and a big helmet of new one...” black hair and bright red lipstick.

Do As The
LOCALS It took four more visits before I got my coat back. She either wasn’t there or was “busy.” I kept asking the other hairdressers to ask her to leave it in the salon. But they told me she wanted to give it to me herself. My coat was being held for ransom. And I was beginning to understand that she was less interested in my money than in inconveniencing and humiliating me. A friend told me to just forget about my coat. The other hairdressers all shook their heads and smiled sympathetically at me. They knew. They worked for her. I wasn’t ready to give up. One day, the moment came. The manager insisted that I go to the end of the salon, down a corridor and up a flight of stairs. I asked, “Can’t you bring it down?” “No,” she said. I was afraid of her now. I followed her nonetheless. Upstairs, she said, “This is my office!” She was not a mere hairdresser; she was a woman with an office. She handed me a bag with my coat. It had been there all along. She said, “Didn’t you notice it was too big? What’s wrong with you? Aren’t you even going to apologize?” Yes, if I were more alert, I wouldn’t have walked out with her coat or I would have noticed the keys in the pocket immediately. If I had been more selfless, or more organized, I would have taken the time, before my interview, to look for the coat’s rightful owner. Her complaints about me, however justified, were just an excuse. By now, from the comments of her staff, I’d gotten to know her a little. She had a child. She had a husband. Her hours were flexible. Her people—women with accents who came from all over the world—feared her. She was a dark and stormy lady, and the clouds she made from standing in her sunshine interested her most. I turned around and walked out. I did not run, though I wanted to. I did wonder if she might pick up a large object and bang me over the head. But bullies use words, not objects. She’d taught me a lesson: I would never let myself be bullied again. There was no way I’d give her a cent. In a 2010 survey, 9% of working Americans said they were currently being bullied on the job, 26% said they had been bullied in the past, and 15% had been witnesses to bullying. That comes to half of the working population. Bullying was defined as “repeated mistreatment: sabotage by others that prevented work from getting done, verbal abuse, threatening conduct, intimidation, and humiliation.” Most of the time, the bullies are unpunished. They win. Downstairs, the hairdressers each looked up from their customers at me. They smiled when they saw my coat. One woman nodded her head in approval. I laughed. She laughed. The laughter, with a note of triumph, rippled through the salon, while the customers looked on in wonder. Now, my returned coat isn’t just another brown down coat. It’s a coat I fought for and a coat that was in the hands of a bully who didn’t win.

This Columbia, SC, native grew up reading skirt! as a kid (which doesn’t make us feel old...) and scored her dream job in sales for the magazine this year. Currently in the throes of planning her own wedding (August is less than six months away!), we’re not sure how she finds the time to do it all, but since we discovered her personal motto is “Live a little, laugh a lot. Luckily, both are available in the iTunes store as free podcasts, so you can just listen to them in the morning.
Can you survive without...Your car? YES. get a bike. You don’t have to ride fast. Just ride.
Can you survive without...Social media? YES. get a life. Studies have shown that our social media feeds can increase negative feelings and “information overload.” Give it a break. See if your mood improves.
Can you survive without...sleep? no. Subscribe to audible books. Having someone read you to sleep quiets the mind and keeps anxiety at bay. Make sure the book is not too stimulating, only one reader and no dramatic effects. Set the timer for 15 minutes. zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz.
Can you survive without...television? yes...netflix?...no. Why shouldn’t we treat ourselves to a ton of originality and creativity?
Can you survive without...worrying? yes. train yourself. “Worrying does not take away tomorrow's troubles. It takes away today's peace.” Randy Armstrong
Can you survive without...Makeup? no. but, less is more. With the new BB (beauty balm) and CC (color correct) multi-purpose skin perfectors, we can skip the base. Add a little mascara and lip stain, and you have the perfect “no makeup” makeup.
CAN YOU SURVIVE WITHOUT...OUR MORNING COFFEE? YES. STEP AWAY FROM THE STARBUCKS. Sip a mug of hot water with freshly squeezed lemon juice to activate your liver and digestive system, plus get a splash of vitamin C.
CAN YOU SURVIVE WITHOUT...A LUNCH BREAK? YOUR BODY CAN, YOUR CREATIVITY CANNOT. According to The Huffington Post, a German study revealed that people who took a lunch break away from their desks were more relaxed and likely to have greater creative potential when they returned to work.
Can you survive without...friends? Short answer: No. Longer answer: Science. There are studies that show people with even moderately active social lives live longer. People need people.
See you in May for the Wanderlust issue!
