It’s an old story with a predictable plot line, but every year we’re a fool for April all over again. Her gentle little showers, her abrupt mood changes, her sudden sunny smiles. We walk around with flowers and foolishness on our minds, wandering through a haze of pollen and possibilities. Yes, we think, this is the year

We’ll Plant a Garden, lose weight, go on a pilgrimage. Hope and pheromones are in the air, as if Mother Nature was drunk on an estrogen/ testosterone cocktail. Who cares whether our schemes come to fruition. There’s still rain to be walked in, tender winter skin to be bared, fern-furled woods to get lost in, love songs to be lived, the Holy Fool card to be played, life to be juiced. Get your

When Mary Anna learned that food banks experience higher demand outside of the school year, she started an annual summer initiative for East Cooper Community Outreach (ECCO) through Hamlin Helping Hands. It’s no surprise that she knew how to go from observation to action—she’s coached executives and professionals to reach their goals for years—and now her problem-solving moxie brings her to your backyard. In addition to her business coaching, Mary Anna now runs Mosquito Squad, a proven approach to protection against mosquitoes, which is handsomely represented by mascot Dread Skeeter. “People love our service because it’s inexpensive and it works! It is so much fun helping folks enjoy their outdoor space!” If a mosquito-free season is your dream, Mary Anna can make that happen—but it’s all because reaching goals comes full circle. “It was my dream to own my first place by 24. Lorcan Lucey literally held my hand when I didn’t know what I was doing. He made my dream come true and has come through every time since then.”

FROM THE PUBLISHER

The

WOW! Issue

Because of this month’s theme, I was going to write about some recent wonderful Wow! experiences, but I couldn’t pass up the chance to talk about the current “War on Women.” This year, members of Congress have introduced more than 40 bills and state legislators have introduced more than 600 measures that would restrict a woman’s access to a full range of reproductive health care, including attempts to defund Planned Parenthood and other family planning services. Every day seems to bring yet another misogynistic piece of news. Rush Limbaugh called a young activist a slut and a prostitute on air and demanded to see videos of her having sex because she supported insurance coverage for birth control pills. In Arizona, House Bill 2625 would have given employers the right to fire women if they used birth control “for contraceptive, abortifacient, abortion or sterilization purposes.” New Hanover, NC, county commissioners voted unanimously to turn down an $8,899 grant because it would provide medical services related to family planning. And in Virginia politicians wanted to require an unnecessarily invasive vaginal ultrasound test for anyone seeking an abortion. (As one lawmaker was reported to have remarked to another, the women had already been probed when they had sex, so what’s the big deal?) In a recent speech, Hillary Clinton said, “Why extremists always focus on women remains a mystery to me. But they all seem to. It doesn’t matter what country they’re in or what religion they claim. They want to control women. They want to control how we dress. They want to control how we act. They even want to control the decisions we make about our own health and bodies.” If you’re tired of it, don’t sit back and wait for change. Attend one of the state or local Unite Against the War on Women marches on April 28th and keep in mind the national march in Washington, D.C., in September. For more information, visit wearewomenmarch.net. Isn’t it time to stand up and be counted?

Wow. April brings Family Circle Cup (more girl power!), the Doughnut Run, the Bed Race, Bocce Bash and the We Are Women march. Wow, wow, and wow. So we’re proud to introduce to you our Wow women of the month—Women on the Web—Jennifer, Stacey and Chassity. One builds websites, one builds buzz and the other shares her beloveds. Whether you know them online or off-line, each of

Chassity’s sweet success—they all represent a little bit of Wow we can find in ourselves, don’t they?

Be Mused With 10,000 souls here, it’s a valid question—is there enough inspiration to go around?

Stephanie Hunt

Be Mused

“I walk into a large white room,” begins Twyla Tharp in her book, The Creative Habit. In this large white room there are wall-to-wall mirrors, a boom box, skid marks on an otherwise clean white floor, and that’s it. Tharp describes how this vacuous whiteness ignites her imaginative muscle, and despite its daunting void, how she slowly moves into it and deliberately begins to fill it with movement and music, with playful openness and intention, and through some alchemy of mystery and madness, creativity emerges into form, shape and energy—a dance. I recall this spare image, this pristine white-room canvas of space, as I walk into the immensely grandiose Grand Ballroom of the Chicago Hilton. This “room” is more like two city blocks with walls boxed around them, paneled in mirrors and velvet curtains, topped with a ridiculously gilded lid. Four chandeliers the size of hot-air balloons drape from elaborate ceiling medallions. I fully expect Louis XIV to parade in at any minute. This room is the gaudy antithesis of Tharp’s minimalist studio. It’s the Superdome of conference halls, and here I am, with 10,000 other writers, many of us seeking what Tharp seeks in her barebones studio: inspiration, imaginative juju, magic. This mass gathering feels a little like what I imagine an open audition for American Idol might be like, without the blatant preening. While we’re all well behaved—I’ve seen minimal hair gel, almost no high heels and no teary outbursts—I doubt I’m the only one in this small city of writers clumped in this large metropolis of a hotel who is dreaming, Idol-esquely, that maybe I’ll be discovered. I am but one among thousands here looking for legitimacy as a writer, whether that means claiming a slim parcel of book-spine real estate, having a story published in a journal, or even a poem accepted by an obscure indie press, for which you will get one free copy as payment. We all sit quietly, pens in hand, notebooks in lap, listening to lectures and panel discussions. Heads nod approvingly as poet Philip Levine delivers genius verse, as writer Jill McCorkle holds sway in a golly-gee West Virginia accent that can’t camouflage her brilliance. We drink in the wisdom of our elders, soak up the glow cast off by literary luminaries—those who have won Pulitzers and lesser prizes, who have been anointed by Kirkus and the New York Times, those who know what royalties are, here in this ballroom decked out for royalty. Like any good American, I feel elevated by this proximity to celebrity. “That’s Sy Safransky…” I whisper to my husband as we pass a slim man with a scraggly gray beard and backpack slung over his shoulder. “…publisher of The Sun.” This means nothing to my clueless husband. Even so, I am inspired. I’m juiced by these readings, by sitting in these over-the-top ballrooms (my favorite—the Red Lacquer Room), where verbs and nouns are precious gems strung on glittering phrases and flung out onto our crowd, a Mardi Gras for debauched lovers of language. In one particularly long poetry reading, my mind wanders and I wonder how the muse navigates such a large and unwieldy affair. Does she get lost in the shuffle between the various ballrooms? Is she weary, frustrated, resentful of being dragged from panel discussion to panel discussion? I picture her as if she were the steamy bowl of Cream of Wheat from those old TV ads, the bowl that steadfastly hovers over kids who eat their hot, wholesome breakfast. I imagine thousands of these stealth clouds of hot, steamy inspiration hovering in these conference halls, colliding into one another as we switch rooms and mill about the hallways. They float along, ready to fortify lackluster characters, fuel flailing plots, add zip to limp verse, but we don’t see them; I don’t see them. Instead, I try to muster the muse by my own grit, to cajole and wrangle her. I paid good money to come take notes on stoking the creative fires. I grasp and claw, hoping to claim a reliable muse the way I jockey for a seat in the room, not wanting to be shut out. With 10,000 souls here, it’s a valid question—is there enough inspiration to go around? As the conference ends I can only hope so, and if not inspiration, there are surely enough literary journals to go around, as my full totebag attests. I return home, not to Twyla Tharp’s large white room nor to a gilt mini-Versailles, but to my regular old house, and an infestation of pantry moths. They’ve hatched from half-opened bags of pasta and oats (not Cream of Wheat, but close), and risen like grain-fueled phoenixes in my absence. They are everywhere, darting out each time I open the cabinet, fluttering all around the kitchen. I find and smush one upstairs. They are small and harmless but unfortunately, Wikipedia warns, “notoriously difficult to get rid of,” working their way into dry foods through even the tightest packaging, where they feast, cocoon, then fly away to mate and create more pesky little moths. And thus the moth, my new kitchen enemy, becomes my new muse prototype. Relentless, sneaky, hungry. Who knew forgotten oatmeal buried deep in the cupboard could yield such bounty? Who knows where inspiration might hide and feast, and where she will fly if you crack open the door? Stephanie Hunt is a freelance writer and muse chaser in Charleston, South Carolina. She has three girls, two bikes, one dog, one husband and several creative projects in progress. She prefers frozen blueberries to moths in her oatmeal. MY CHARLESTON APRIL

April. When I think of April I see sunflowers, rain showers, an abundance of ripe berries and the beginning of soft-shell crabs. Being outside as much as possible becomes a top priority, even if it means sacrificing sleep to see the sunrise. In April, afternoon storms roll in more often than not; and sometimes ice cream counts as dinner. Loquat trees are in full force and weekends are spent swimming in the ocean. This season evokes creativity and motivation; a short walk through a narrow alleyway South of Broad is enough to inspire. There’s a certain camaraderie, a shared giddiness, during the springtime in Charleston knowing that we are the lucky ones.

Even since I graduated, I love walking through College of Charleston’s beautiful cistern.

An abundance of potted plants from Abide -A-while is a must this time of year.

Beads on Cannon is a hidden gem of the Elliotborough neighborhood.

Spring calls for light alfresco lunches, with fresh veggies and homemade soup.

Charleston in April feels like a fairytale; the sunlight twinkles, the honeysuckle is fragrant, and the giant pink blooms are scattered throughout the city.

Upgrade your sunset seats. Morris Sokol has great outdoor furniture—so you have a chair for everyone. 36  aprilw2012

Unexpected evening trips to Sullivan’s Island make weekdays feel special.

Springtime makes me crave banana pudding with homemade whipped cream from Jestine’s Sweet Shop.

Biking and Bin 152 After work in the evenings, my boyfriend and I go on sunset bike rides around the peninsula. I love the chaos of my daily

this month I love

life, but these bike rides are the one peaceful consistency that I rely on. We ride and chat and soak up the salty air and this beautiful city. Sometimes we even stop at Bin 152 for a glass of crisp white wine and creamy french cheese. By the end of our ride my hair is perfectly tangled and my cheeks hurt from smiling, every single time.

Open windows. Picnics at the battery. Iced green tea. Soft-shell crabs at FIG. Raspberry smoothies for breakfast. Jumping in the ocean. Marathon brunches. Sunrise and sunset bike rides. Sand in my car.

“April is the time to drop everything, pile in a car with all your friends, open the windows (and sunroof), turn on your favorite song, drive to the beach, and run straight into the ocean.

The magic hour casts such stunning light over the fresh, colorful, blooms.

Olivia Rae James shares words and photos about her life in Charleston on her blog, Everyday Musings. It’s a collection of food, travel, sunsets, and dance parties. Follow her at olivia-rae.com.

I could live on wine and cheese from Bin 152.

Affordabike has great bike lights so biking home in the dark is not a problem.

I love to peek in yards and admire their secret gardens.

He’s So Original

Rhys Williams is an off-stage Spoleto star. You think you’ve been a Spoleto supporter for a while? You’ve got nothing on Rhys. “I came to Charleston in 1983 and was in the right place at the right time.” Now in his 29th Spoleto season, the director of production now counts Spoleto as a client of his company, Technical Theater Solutions. (Others include Disney Cruise Lines, the American Idiot musical and the Charleston Museum.) “I think there are people who are analytic and people who are more creative but we can bridge that gap. What I do is take a picture on paper and make that happen on stage. I take a lot of pride in that work because it requires you to do great work within limitations.” What do you like about wearing a skirt? “Anything for my country! Plus, it seemed like a good idea to get Thor, my dog, into a skirt. I thought it might be humbling for him.” What do you like about reading skirt!? “I believe that women should be treated equally to men and I think it’s inspiring to have a magazine that speaks to what women are all about.” Photo by Marni Rothschild Durlach

Shoes I wish I could wear in the kitchen:

Best compliment from a diner: (In reference to my fried oysters.)

“The work of an artist!” How do you unwind after a long night at Boulevard Diner? A hot shower, glass of red wine and then sleep—in that order. Must-have local ingredient: Clams—ours have a certain salinity that makes them tastier!

Just-got-off-work indulgence: Anything outdoors, particularly kayaking.

Flip flops! I’m a true beach girl.

Next-favorite Dine With Sal spot: Long Point Grill.

Customers rave about: Our shrimp and grits.

Where I trained:

Favorite cookbook: The Joy of Cooking Favorite foodie: Anthony Bourdain. I once spotted him in a restaurant in Cannes, France. I regret not offering to buy him a drink!

I graduated from Appalachian State but I was “home schooled” for my culinary skills. My whole family is full of extraordinary and creative cooks.

Favorite ingredients:

My recipe for running a great kitchen: • Be on Time • Work Clean • Work as a Team • Respect Each Other • Listen

Most popular breakfast menu item: Buttermilk pancakes.

The secret behind Big & Juicy burger: They’re fresh! And cooked on cast-iron flat top.

Best red and white wines to go with my food: I like the Placido Pinot Grigio and the Acacia Pinot Noir.

Fish Fresh Pastas

Fresh Vegetables

Don’t miss!

Most classic diner meal served: Ovenroasted turkey dinner.

Favorite dishes to prepare: Pastas and risottos.

Must-try appetizer: Fried pickles and fried green tomato combo!

Best entrée to share: The buttermilk fried chicken—it’s a lot of food.

Researchers already knew that eating extremely large portions of carrots, for instance, could turn skin orange, but it wasn’t known that a small increase in vegetables and fruit with red and yellow pigments could be perceptible to others as a healthy, appealing glow. Although the initial study was done with Caucasian subjects, researchers believe the effect would exist cross-culturally. The scientists used light sensors to show that these hues were linked with levels of carotenoids that are high in lycopene in the skin (plus they help to protect against heart disease and cancer). So next time you go to the grocery, load up your cart with tomatoes, red peppers, carrots, broccoli, spinach and squash and get ready for the compliments.

Women on the Web

Chassity Evans | Find Love Online A year and a half ago, Chassity put creativity to keyboard and started her blog Look Linger Love, a colorful creampuff of fashion, interiors and art. “Blogging keeps me engaged in the topics that I love. I share an average of eight posts a week and that doesn’t come without time and research, but when the topics are fashion, interiors, and the like, it’s hardly homework.” Readers will often spot locals like Sally King Benedict or goodies like Hannah Nation’s Gadabout, but she swears it’s not bias—“I cover a lot of Charleston talent, but only because Charleston is brimming with it! My local readership accounts for about five percent of my total audience so I really do have to look for subject matter that will appeal on a broader level. It’s a bonus when that talent happens to be found here locally.” Going on two years, she’s still giddy. “I still get a thrill each time I tap ‘publish post.’” looklingerlove.blogspot.com Photo by Alice Keeney

Stacey Elicker | Creative Sparkle You may not yet know the woman behind Little Highrise, but you certainly know her work. The marketing and advertising firm does everything from a one-time logo to full-blown websites. Keep your eyes peeled for an interior designer’s upcoming brand overhaul and ecommerce projects for Charleston’s Revolutionary Eating Ventures group— plus Eat Local Month has Little Highrise flavor all over it too. “Every project that I work on is personal. By taking on a project, I have committed to owning that project, brand or company as if it were my own.” And a sense of girl power comes in handy down the line: “I’m in good company being a creative woman in Charleston. Charleston is not made up of the Old Boys Club that it has traditionally been known for. This environment has not only been accepting, but has allowed me to excel. Plus, women are the largest audience of consumer goods online.” Photo by Marni Rothschild Durlach

Jennifer Bilbro | The Happiest Meals When Jennifer started making note of local restaurants that offered deals on kid-size meals, friends kept asking for more. Fast forward to now and Out to Eat With Kids is its own nationally recognized website with a mobile app to boot. “Creating a reliable, on-the-go resource for parents that makes life easier—I knew it had potential but never thought I’d be the one behind it.” And don’t count yourself out if you’re sans kids. Jennifer admits her single friends even use it for reverse reasons. “They like to know where not to go. It can get crazy on a kid’s night at some restaurants!” Recently Jennifer teamed up with the National Restaurant Association, their Kids LiveWell program and Healthy Dining Finder to indicate which kids’ meals are healthier choices. “The site is the most difficult thing I’ve ever done in my life, yet I can’t wait to get up each morning and get going on it.” outtoeatwithkids.com Photo by Marni Rothschild Durlach

The university was down on one knee, proposing to me, asking me for my hand in tenure, and I found my heart saying “No. But thanks.” I became the runaway bride.

Finding

My

P

Cynthia Briggs

icture a girl, 11 years old, sitting on a flowered sofa. She leans studiously over a spiral notebook with a picture of unicorn on the cover. She’s writing a book, her autobiography. A look of intense concentration on her face, her mouth open in deep thinking. On her head, a pillowcase tied on the sides to look like long, floppy dog ears. She’s a little too old for dressing up like a dog. A little too young to understand the social consequences of such weirdness. Her mom snaps the picture, freezing in time the end of this girl’s innocent and unashamed self-expression. I am that little girl. Before I hit middle school and the social pressures of being a teenager, I was totally tapped into the wildness of my native soul. I loved three things: animals (and pretending to be one), playing outside, and writing. I kept a journal, made cartoon books and wrote about my alter ego, a black stallion who loved running. I knew who I was, strangeness and all. Like most girls, once I arrived in middle school my whole perspective dramatically and tragically changed. I suddenly became aware that “normal” girls didn’t wear dog ears, even at home, nor did they run, get super sweaty, skin their knees on pavement, or spend too much time reading and writing. My perfectly fine elementary-school self suddenly felt ashamed and embarrassed. How had I become so very weird so quickly? I felt betrayed by my own internal sense of direction. I stood out, and not in a good way. I began seeking external markers for success, trying to understand myself from the outside in. I became an overachiever. In middle school I abandoned writing and found stability and comfort in getting good grades, following the rules, and generally making my parents proud. In college and graduate school I excelled at excelling. I finished my Master’s degree with a 3.9 GPA, my doctorate with a 4.0. Making As became my business, and I never questioned whether perfect grades were a noble or sufficient goal. It was simply how I measured my success, my self-worth. External standards were clear and exact and did not allow for my wild and weird inner being to make me look foolish. I retreated farther and farther from that strange and wonderful little girl I used to be. After I completed my doctorate I took a tenure-track teaching job at a university in Minnesota. Academia is designed for those of us who never learned to trust our inner compass. Each year, each term, there’s a new marker for success, another

bullet point on the academic résumé. As I marked off the boxes toward tenure, I expected to feel a growing sense of contentment. After all, tenure meant a permanent job. Security. Adulthood. Weren’t these things the goal? At night, after work, when I lay exhausted and worn in the darkness of my bedroom, I caught glimpses of my own depth, my own soul. I was not happy. My soul felt impoverished, starved. Yet I resisted the idea of leaving my structured and ordered life. My own internal gauge for success proved too messy and subjective to be considered for very long. When I risked examining my heart’s longing for my life, I feared the enormity of what it might ask of me. From deep within, I longed to be a writer. Not an academic writer as I’d been trained to be, but an impassioned one. The little girl wearing dog ears called to me from the past, inviting me back to my true self. To satisfy my restless animal heart I began blogging about my existential descent. I feared judgment from my academic colleagues so I wrote under a pseudonym. I poured out matters of the heart, the importance of living an authentic life, the dark reaches of grief and the incredible liberation of being honest. I started hearing from readers who appreciated my message. Most importantly, I finally started listening to myself. Writing was my release, my joy in the middle of a stale life. I began to shape my days around it, and the external rewards of my job seemed less and less appealing. At work, I was on the verge of applying for tenure. The dean assured me it was mine if I wanted it. A permanent job. The ultimate prize. I felt like I was in a boring relationship with a perfectly nice man who really wanted to marry me. The university was down on one knee, proposing to me, asking me for my hand in tenure, and I found my heart saying “No. But thanks.” I became the runaway bride. I quit my job on Easter Sunday, three days after my 38th birthday. The symbolism of this timing is not lost on me. I let die my expectations for myself and resurrected a new kind of life, a more honest and heartfelt way of being. My colleagues were shocked when I quit my job. I could do little to explain my seemingly insane decision. People just don’t leave tenure-track jobs. It doesn’t make sense to the logical mind. But my heart. Oh, my heart. My heart and soul did cartwheels of joy. So happy to be heard, so happy to be respected and honored. My heart and soul lay down every night in total contentment that I took the risk and trusted their deep wisdom. And that little girl wearing dog ears on the sofa? She smiled knowingly, welcoming me home.

f-word [ Feminism Free-For-All ]

“Women are not making it to the top of any profession anywhere in the world. The numbers tell the story quite clearly. One hundred and ninety heads of state; nine are women. Of all the people in parliament in the world, 13% are women. In the corporate sector, women at the top, C-level jobs, board seats—tops out at 15-16%. The numbers have not moved since 2002 and are going in the wrong direction.” Sheryl Sandberg, COO & highest paid employee of Facebook.

FRONT PAGE?

A new report from the Women’s Media Center shows that women have made few inroads in leadership roles in media despite the fact that they are entering journalism school in record numbers. And not surprisingly, stories about women in the news are rare as well. The report shows that just 21.7 percent of guests on Sunday morning news talk shows were women in 2011, while just 24 percent of news stories worldwide were about women.

In March, the Texas Health and Human Services Commission ruled to exclude Planned Parenthood from partipating in the Women’s Health Program, a federally funded program that delivers $9 from the feds for every $1 spent by the state on women’s health. When Texas decided to exclude Planned Parenthood, Medicaid informed HHSC that it would be violating the guidelines of the program and would

hese babies are not mine. I don’t have any hope or agenda for how they will grow up or who they will become. While I obviously wish for them nothing but good health, I am not paralyzed by sudden bouts of worry over what might happen to them in terms of illness or accident, as I was as a new mother to my own children. I fall for my “work babies” in the moment, but because my heart isn’t tethered for the long haul, I can see them for who they are. I see them as wonderful, but not for the same reasons that a parent or an aunt or a grandmother would. I am not amazed when they turn their head to a sibling’s voice or after they roll over for the first time. How quickly they fill a diaper fails to astonish me. And I know for a fact that almost every baby’s first babble phrase is “ah goo.” Perhaps this thrilled me once, when released from my daughter’s lips. Now? Unremarkable. As I do meet a lot of babies, all of their milestones and celebrated strokes of genius are par for the course for the seasoned doula—just another day on the job. What I see—from the fortunate position of care giving, without caring too much—is a blank canvas. I see the essence of the human race before true fear or disappointment, before heartbreak or gadget obsession. Before the influence of reality TV. Before bubble gum. Before algebra. Before a true and steadfast preference for blondes, or brunettes. I see a small, thinking animal squinting at and literally licking at the sunlight, before she actually knows what the sun is. Imagine not knowing the sun. Now look at it—this star, this life-giving center of what we absentmindedly refer to as the Solar System—as if seeing it for the first time. These babies, who are not mine, remind me to do that once in a while. I always wonder when I make acquaintance with another newborn friend, who I am holding in my arms. A future rock star? A poet? A plant manager? A hopeless romantic? A cynic? Someone who will eventually subscribe to Cat Fancy? Someone who will, without question, join the NRA? Will this little boy bravely decide, under the unbearable weight of locker room taunts, to scrap the soccer scholarship and become a fashion designer? Will that baby girl get a perfect score on her SAT but decide instead to join a commune and legally change her name to Siren Blue? Will this one ride off on the back of someone’s motorcycle, taking on a chain of adventures—one after the other—lapping up a lifetime of experience by the age of 25, at the expense of her mother’s broken heart? Or will she toil away the hours hunched over a microscope, until she finds a cure? It doesn’t really matter to me, the baby expert, the gal who cruises through for a few weeks educating the mother, caring for the family, spending time with baby here and there while one of the parents takes a nap or a hot shower. I am

enchanted by these infants, but I will not know them as walking, talking children. I will rarely learn their fates, and it is not my job to fret over it. Still, I become time and again heady with what I see in tiny grasping fingers, toes, the wide eyes, and the milk-stained mouth: unscripted, unimagined possibility. I wonder, as I stare into each small, searching face—observing the spongelike quality of the young brain, at what point a destiny is shaped. When does the path to president, copywriter, chauvinist, or recluse narrow and sharpen so that a person is now a personality, requiring effort and struggle—perhaps a little therapy—to truly change? At what point does that happen? And at what age does a human typically first listen to The Beatles? Because it happens eventually, right? That won’t ever change. Or will it? Ever so slightly more important: When does a person lose the so-called meaning of life? Because the sleepy, suckling, skin-shedding newborns have it down. Emotions flicker across their small faces with certainty. Confusion, concentration, contentment, joy. I’m talking about real joy that clearly stirs a baby—in the chest, in the belly, in kicking feet, and in newly found gurgling laughter. I see in these babies the most basic needs that never really change for us, although we become so silly and fractured and driven, we constantly add false items to our list of necessities. We adults even place our extra needs at the top of the list, so that treadmill comes before touch, convenience before sustenance. An infant sees the world in terms of hunger, loneliness, comfort, and discovery. I see these babies and I want to find a way back to simply hunger, loneliness, comfort, and discovery. And, I want to fearlessly cry when I don’t get what I need. Loudly. At what point do we screw it up? At what point do we stop making eye contact and stop making demands? Every day, I’m confronted with the purity of life before trust is broken, before self-consciousness; before a first date, a first hangover, or a first real sense of accomplishment. I am at once filled with a longing to be so small and natural, and also a sort of amusement over what we eventually, inevitably become—miserable, exhausted, hardwired, hopeful grown-ups. Sometimes I want to bring babies—loads of them—into the boardrooms, watch them snuggle against scratchy suits, allow women and men to squirm in the raw wisdom of a newborn’s gaze. I want to see a baby give the go-getters what they so skillfully give to me when I pay close enough attention: deep breaths, a quiet mind, fresh eyes. It’s a subtle sort of inspiration that we miss as we parent our own children, stumbling through the deep fog of sleep deprivation, beneath the weight of worry and expectation. The new knowledge that water makes a slapping sound when it splashes, the unwritten life story, a pleasant voice, and staring at the sun. Hunger, loneliness, comfort, and discovery. Being human and feeling inspired by every little thing.

Coast Guard Seaman Kori Cioca wasn’t even 21 and weighed barely 95 lbs. when she was raped and violently assaulted by her direct supervisor. Even though she reported the attack, she was forced to work alongside him and even serve him coffee. Although her landmark suit to hold the Defense Dept. accountable for allowing sexual assaults to continue in the military was dismissed, a similar case has been filed on behalf of a female Marine and seven other military women.

“...what can I do for myself that would be very, very kind at this moment?”

Stacy Appel

O

ne activity in my life that falls under the category of Gainful Employment has never felt exactly like a job. A few nights each month I work at a music coffeehouse, where I am now paid to listen to the same remarkable concerts I used to pay to attend. The coffeehouse offers a sturdy oasis no matter what stressors invade me by way of my other work. Though I took the staff job without much thought, just to save on ticket fees, I now experience it as a haven for my feeling self and over-taxed intellect. The coffeehouse (theater, actually, since the move to spacious new quarters) attracts listeners of all sorts—musicians taking a night off to hear their colleagues wow the crowds, teenagers who hope to study performing arts, poets, accountants, dancers and CEOs. As a refuge from cell phones and ordinary chatter, this cathedral made of recycled wood allows its audience, some of whom come several nights a week to pay tribute, good practice in leaving the chaos of the workday just outside the door, much the same way formal worshipers might leave their shoes outside a temple. My friend Grace, one of a posse of the venue’s volunteers, is just the sort of person to help make a crowd welcome. She is quietly skillful in putting others at ease, despite her own obvious anxiety and shyness. A slender widow in her late fifties with a rueful smile, she is usually reluctant to share much

Refrains In The Key Of G

“By Jove!

I think we found the perfect retirement community!”

of anything about her own life, preferring to ask thoughtful questions of others or just sit off to the side with a few fellow volunteers during a performance, absorbing the music and sipping her tea. So I was pleased and a little surprised last month when, in an interlude before the evening’s folk music concert began, she launched into a story in the lobby where we usually exchange brief hellos. “Do you have a moment? I have to tell you what happened, it was so odd.” Grace didn’t wait for my reply. “Yesterday I lost my car keys on Solano Avenue while I was doing errands. They must have fallen out of my purse while I was strolling up and down shopping, but the avenue is so full of stores. I had no idea how long ago I’d dropped them or where to even begin to look.” I could imagine her distress. Solano Avenue, a favorite haunt in Berkeley, is home to grocery stores, coffee shops, drugstores, ethnic restaurants, bookstores, antique dealers, and apparel outlets. The volume of foot traffic alone, never mind the fading light, would have made the treasure hunt for missing keys look impossible. She told me she retraced her steps a hundred times to no avail, feeling increasingly frantic. Night fell, shrouding the sidewalks and door stoops in shadow. Grace revisited every store she could remember stopping into along the avenue, which luckily had only been those on one side of the two-mile stretch. But no one had found the key ring, and few exhibited concern over her dilemma. People must lose their wallets and glasses and keys every day, she had thought to herself. I mustn’t complain. “But it was the loneliest feeling,” she said. “I had no way to get home, and I didn’t have my phone or know who to call. My groceries and my coat were locked in the car. My house keys, my car keys, even my post office box key were all on that same ring. I felt like a four-year-old child whose mother had disappeared.” After another hour of fruitless searching while the air turned increasingly chilly, she was hungry and tired. The beginnings of a panic attack set in—to stave off the queasy, almost-hyperventilating feeling that threatened to take over, she decided to stop looking. If she couldn’t find some way to quiet her mind, maybe she would lose that as well. “I thought, what can I do for myself that would be very, very kind at this moment?” So she made her way across the street to a chocolatier she’d never noticed before, hoping to buy tea and a truffle before they closed for the night, maybe sit for a little while on the wooden bench inside. “This is a wonderful store,” Grace murmured to the proprietor. “I can’t think why I’ve never stopped in.” It was true—inside the cozy and fragrant shop, chocolates of all shapes and sizes were arranged artfully on cake plates in clean glass cases, and the plump owner had a welcoming grin which, at that particular moment, felt as restorative as the raspberry truffle Grace bought. Warmed, comforted, she began to be able to breathe. It seemed that her addled brain began to operate just a little bit better. If this pleasant shopkeeper would let her use the phone to call road service and a locksmith, even though it could still be a long while before she was home, eventually she would find herself there again, sane and safe. Just that one realization made her feel less paralyzed. Maybe she would indulge in one more truffle. As she stepped forward to place another couple of dollar bills in the owner’s hand, a glint of silver next to the register caught her eye. How was this possible? There on the counter of a shop she’d never before set foot in was a set of keys. A tiny blue “G” on the key ring dispelled all doubts: they belonged to Grace. “Oh, honey, I’m so glad,” the proprietor told her, waving away the cash and laughing with real glee. “Some guy walked in and dropped them off here not twenty minutes ago. I figured to bring ‘em to the post office in a week or so if no one asked.” Though I don’t recall exactly who performed the concert at the coffeehouse that night, I remember every word of Grace’s story, and the way she somehow sensed it was just as important as the music. I like to think of all the other mysteries, large and small, just waiting to unfold while a person is off buying chocolate or listening to a song, maybe napping or reading a magazine or sitting quietly on a bench somewhere. I like thinking about Grace’s name, too, and how well it suits her.

According to Rush Limbaugh, having your birth control pills covered by insurance means you’re being paid to have sex. But apparently, the same reasoning doesn’t apply to Viagra, which is routinely included in insurance plans. However, a bill introduced by Ohio legislator Nina Turner would regulate Viagra prescriptions by requiring doctors to first conduct a cardiac stress test, refer the patient to a sex therapist for a written report on why he needs Viagra and then obtain a notarized affidavit from at least one sex partner certifying he had trouble maintaining an erection during the past 90 days.

In Chaucer’s world, “Aprille” was the month his characters went on pilgrimage, and in spring, I too yearn to go

somewhere else, be someone exotic and adventurous. I dream of places I’ve loved—Hawaii, London, Mendocino— and places I’d love to see

for the first time— Croatia, Moorea, Australia, the Wild West.

Conventional wisdom says you can’t

change

your life by moving or traveling, but I say,

what if you can?

Taking an oil painting class with local artist Leslie Pratt-Thomas transported me to a realm where the only reality was the smell of the paints, the colors on the palette, time put on pause. prattthomasstudio.com

I’m fascinated by tarot cards right now, especially the Fool, which Wikipedia says, “...is the spirit in search of experience. He represents the mystical cleverness bereft of reason within us, the childlike ability to tune into the inner workings of the world.” I need me some of that.

On Constant Replay: Jeff Beck’s version of “Elegy for Dunkirk” (from Atonement) feels like it’s being played on your heart strings instead of guitar strings. It’s music for a rainy night spent thinking of loss and love.

I love piñatas, papel picado banners and tissue-paper flower garlands. I’m adding Caitlin Holcomb’s handmade Forever banner to my collection—it fits right in. Sending her a giant hug in her recovery from illness and hoping she feels better FOREVER.
