Things to Do in April: Be reborn. Follow your heart instead of your head. Go barefoot before it’s time. Forget your umbrella and walk in the rain like you did as a kid. Buy flowers instead of bread. Be a lunchbox artist… hardboil eggs and dye them all deep red.
Hatch A New Look or a new idea. Crush on someone unattainable. Wake up to Coltrane to sweet talk your soul. Make Green your mantra. Grow lettuce, boil shrimp. Give up winter blues and
Pack the Black Away for a while. Adopt a dog and name it Scrappy. Consider the lilies of the valley and wear Diorissimo. Get a tattoo that says “Kiss the sky.” Buy that bikini, no matter what your stretchmarks say. Fresh basil beckons…bring it home. Marry it to mozzarella… they’re made for each other. Bare your skin and shea butter it up. Come out of your shell and be tender. Cover copy by Nikki Hardin, art by Ali Douglass

Single in Charleston? Michelle is an attractive, 40-something professional woman. Recently divorced, she’s decided it’s time to meet new people. Excited for a night on the town, early Saturday night Michelle calls up a few of her girlfriends to make plans. The first call is Jill, married with two kids. “Sorry, Michelle,” she says, “I am just so exhausted from work this week! Thanks, but I’m settling in for a quiet night with the husband.” Undeterred, Michelle makes a second call to her old college friend, Anna. Anna says she would go out but these days she is caring for her elderly mother and cannot afford the expense of an adult sitter. Okay, Michelle thinks, one more try – Sarah! Sarah is sure to be up for it because she is also divorced and her children are teenagers. But once again, “I’d love to, but both girls are home tonight and I haven’t spent much time with them.”
It occurs to Michelle just how much things have changed in the dating scene. Her friends have moved on and going out just isn’t the same as it was in her 20s. She pours herself a glass of wine and wonders how she’ll ever meet someone.
Ready to start dating again? Not sure where to begin? We’ll help you get back in the swing of things! These are common stories we hear every day, says Jennifer Hays of selectivewomen.com. When you’re ready to get out and meet again (like Michelle), there are very few venues that offer a safe and reliable way for busy professionals to meet interesting people, connect and form REAL relationships.
That’s why so many singles contact selectivewomen.com. Our relationship coaches screen and qualify applicants, assuring you that each member is mentally and emotionally ready to move ahead. That’s selective! After all, that’s why we are one of the area’s oldest and largest introduction services, from Savannah and Hilton Head to Charleston, Jacksonville and beyond.

Summer Sisters
To say ours was a competitive friendship would be only partially true. Yes, Carole and I had an appetite for outdoing one another, but only on every other Thursday morning, and only from mid-June to late August. Pancake mornings at camp. The morning that the usual uninspired cereals (Cheerios, Corn Flakes, Rice Krispies) and bowls of halved, browning-before-your-very-eyes bananas would be replaced with platters of fresh hotcakes, straight off the griddle. The three elderly camp cooks—white-haired, industrious women from the nearby tiny mountain town of Sparta, North Carolina—would have gotten up at 5:30 in the morning, long before “Reveille,” to begin mixing vats of batter and flipping flapjacks by hand, to prep for the 300 young campers and 50 or so counselors who’d trudge in after flag raising, still sleepy but hungry. And especially hungry for homemade pancakes, camp-style. Big. Golden. Not too fluffy, not too flat. Hearty and totally unwholesome. White flour sponges for butter and Aunt Jemima’s syrup. Mmmm. Those Thursdays were not simply breakfast for Carole and me; it was game on. I’m not sure how our first pancake-eating contest got started. Maybe it was that one of us noticed the other continuing to load her plate each time our KP Duty-camper returned to the table with pancake reinforcements. But soon, our charges—10 eightyear-old girls (Carole and I staffed Mohawk, the youngest cabin) who otherwise revered their kind, patient and slightly zany counselors—would begin to look aghast and concerned. 15 pancakes…and counting?? Who will tuck us in at night if our counselors explode? Before long, the entire dining hall would be watching and cheering, choosing sides. “Go Stephanie! One more, one more!” “Come on Carole! You can do it. Swaaaallooww!” The camp director would shake his head, more in disbelief at our gorge-fest than dismay. This was decades before childhood obesity was a buzzkill and carbs had a bad rap. Our flapjack smackdown was harmless breakfast sport. Typical camp silliness lauded for its entertainment value. I even think the cooks got a kick out of it, despite the fact that they had to keep flipping cakes long past closing time. I can still remember my discomfort waddling back to our cabin post-pancake-a-thon, then wallowing in my bunk during cabin clean-up, semi-comatose from glucose overload. The poor campers had to swish the toilets and sweep all by themselves on those gluttonous Thursdays, but earning the dreaded “Dirty Lil” award was a small price to pay for the pancake bonding that solidified Carole’s and my friendship. When it came to sheer gut fortitude and stomach expandability, she was my equal. When it came to generosity, thoughtfulness and wisdom balanced by wicked humor, she was my idol. I have a picture of Carole and me dressed as Raggedy Ann and Andy for a camp skit. We’re both in red gingham shirts and denim—my hair in pigtails, hers in a ponytail and red lipstick smeared in big red blots on our cheeks. We were both tall and skinny, though she was slightly taller and skinnier. We both had overalls (it was camp after all, and the late ‘70s); we both had stuffed animals on our bunks, though Carole’s “Baa-Baa,” a beloved hand-sewn lamb, displayed authentic Velveteen Rabbit threadbare-ness, while my Winnie the Pooh was mostly a prop—something I had loved once but now just felt I ought to bring along. We both had an earnest Christian faith as only earnest and still unjaded 17- and 18-year-old young girls can have. We knew our Romans 8:28 and could rattle off a Galatians or Ephesians verse for encouragement if the other was having a lousy day. We made irreverent jokes one minute and prayed together the next. Carole was a year or two older than I was. She was the Senior Counselor and I was her underling the year we were first paired together in Mohawk. We worked side-by-side for three more summers, comforting homesick campers, leading cabin devotions based on Shel Silverstein’s The Giving Tree. While I could usually stuff my face with more pancakes than she could, I always felt Carole beat me on the faith front. She was the more mature and credible Christian. She had a sturdy certitude I both admired and was intimidated by. I, on the other hand, liked to flip the cakes— see what the other side looked like. I’d shake up the short stack, ask questions, poke holes. Not that I didn’t believe; I did, with all my earnest heart. I just didn’t swallow anything whole, unless it happened to be a Thursday morning with imitation maple syrup at the ready. I found that Raggedy Ann and Andy picture not long ago, and a pang re-emerged. I could taste the starchy sweet aftertaste of a pancake death-feed; I missed our one-time closeness. After our college years and tandem summers, Carole and I went different directions. She did missionary work with the YMCA in Singapore. I led bike tours and eventually wound up in Divinity School. She stayed steadfast in her beliefs; I became a little looser in mine, allowing room for what I considered to be a healthy and necessary skepticism. She married a clean-cut guy rooted in faith. I married a contrarian prepster rooted in rock-n-roll. I worried that our differences would distance us; that I didn’t measure up anymore. So I allowed distance to distance us instead. The sisterly bond that Carole and I once shared simply faded. No ill will, no breach of trust, just general lack of care and feeding. And now I wonder, when is it too late to try one more pancake? When does flour and butter and faux maple syrup stop tasting like regret? Stephanie Hunt is a freelance writer in Mt. Pleasant, South Carolina. Her youngest daughter, Claire, is the resident pancake maker, God bless her. stephaniehuntwrites.com

APRIL CHALLENGE
Since the days are finally warm and the weekends are just as precious as they’ve ever been, it’s time to get outside and rekindle your love affair with nature. A healthy combo of Vitamin D and sweat is just as good for your soul as it is for your body. Step away from the computer and get out there!

...Enjoy an iced Americano and an almond croissant from one of the hammock seats on the porch at Brown’s Court Bakery on St. Philip Street. ...Honor and stretch my creativity by signing up for a workshop at Redux Studios. The Figure Drawing class would be the most intimidating option for me, so I guess that’s the one I should take! ...Visit Sophie at Lordis Loft Salon on King Street (the only woman I trust with my hair, by the way), and give in to the urge to go even shorter. Short hair is the new long hair. Chop, chop! ...Post up in a dimly lit corner of The Post House bar with my handsome beau. He’ll take a Sorghum Old Fashioned, and I’ll take a Classic Collins, please. ...Take my pup Greta out for a stroll around the trails by our house. Squirrels beware! ...Spend a few hours hanging out in the courtyard at Kudu on Vanderhorst Street. With the delicious coffee and craft beer, yummy sandwiches, live music, and the knowledge that I’ll almost certainly run into a friendly face, it’s hard to believe that I would ever spend my Saturdays doing anything else.

James Irving plays with fire. For this artist, not even molten metal is too hot to handle. Holding a degree in studio art with a sculpting and painting focus, James’ first job was doing custom metalwork under a local blacksmith. “With blacksmithing, you learn something new pretty much every day.” And one day in 2007, he established Pirate’s Forge to promote his projects, including lantern designs and wall brands for homes and restaurants. (The name is a tribute to his father’s fascination with pirates.) Between ventures, James maintains his painting prowess at Wine and Design, where he teaches classes for both adults and children. “Everybody can paint; everybody’s just got a different style. It’s just like your handwriting.” What do you like about reading skirt!? “I think the cover art is a great way to attract the reader visually to the magazine. It always seems to catch my eye when I see a skirt! magazine lying around.” What do you like about wearing a skirt? “Besides the overall freedom it gives me, I would have to say the range of mobility.”

The trauma and drama of female friendships is the geography of a girl’s life at ten. Friendships rule, and alliances change hourly.
Marcia Walker
I
t’s become a ritual. At the end of the school day my daughter, Izzy, shrugs off her winter jacket, plops her backpack on the floor and moseys on over to the breakfast counter with a bowl of fishy crackers. Then she sighs with as much woe as a ten-year-old can muster and says, “So, do you want to hear about it?” Without waiting for me to answer she launches into her latest friend crisis. There is at least one a day. On Monday, her friend Sarah wore her hair in French braids even though my daughter and her other friend Laura agreed they would only wear their hair in traditional braids (except on weekends…obviously). On Tuesday, Laura refused to trade her Fruit Roll-Up for Izzy’s Babybel cheese. Instead, Izzy tells me, Laura traded lunch snacks with Sarah (that French braid floozy). By Wednesday, Sarah and Laura were no longer speaking to Izzy. Recess was a lonely affair. “Lunch,” Izzy said, “was a dismal failure.” I try to stay neutral. First of all, my daughter—though my favorite girl in the world—is an accomplished liar. (Last month she convinced the principal we were moving to Costa Rica.) Second, I don’t want to become the next front-page parent who, passionately embroiled in their child’s social life, decks another parent at the school play. No, I remember Grade Five. My self-esteem rose and fell according to how well I was liked. The trauma and drama of female friendships is the geography of a girl’s life at ten. Friendships rule, and alliances change hourly. What I don’t remember is discussing my friendships with my parents or working through my feelings of worthlessness with any kind of clinical rigor. Izzy, on the other hand, recaps the intricacies of her friendships and her feelings about the friendships with me after school, her father every night before bed, and the school counselor during her lonesome recesses. The result of her perseverance (or obsession) is her own classification of friendship. She explained it to me during one of our afternoon chats.

Izzy’s Friends
Specializing in a beautiful you. The Banana Friend This is the best friend you can find: trustworthy, fun and kind. They hold your secrets like their own. Izzy tells me you get one, maybe two, banana friends. They don’t put you down or feel threatened by you. If you fight with a banana friend, you can still talk to her, even if it’s weird, because she cares for your friendship as much as you do. The Monkey Friend
These are “friends” in quotations because when you get right down to it they’re not very friend-like. The problem with spider friends, other than you feel like crap when you hang out with them, is that the core of the relationship is power. If they feel dominant in the friendship, things go well, but if they feel vulnerable, they lash out, either insulting you or someone close to you. Spider friends are savvy. You won’t realize they put you down until later. Instead you feel powerless. You feel less like yourself. In an effort to feel better, you gossip about other people and then feel even worse. The only way out of spider friends, Izzy tells me, is through the true friendship of a banana friend. The Lollipop Friend These are sweet friends, but they have no substance. They are fillers, back-up friends, and while easy to maintain, you can’t count on them for anything. Like lollipops, after a few juicy licks, there is nothing there.
After my daughter explained her categorization, I thought about it. Later that night I asked her to explain it again. Then I wrote it down and thought about it some more. She was right. Most of my friendships fit neatly into one of those categories. As I mentally slotted my friends into their appropriate classification, I struggled to place Natalie, one of my oldest friends. Natalie was my banana friend all through university. We were each other’s maid of honor. She named my daughter when she was born, but something happened during her divorce. We struggled to like each other. I didn’t feel like myself around her anymore. There were topics I couldn’t bring up, and these turned into gaping black holes in our friendship. We continued to play the roles of our old friendship, but it felt false. I began talking about her behind her back in a way I never would have before. I clung to the old idea of our friendship, but the more I held on, the worse I felt about our current superficial friendship. Gradually we both stopped calling each other, and our friendship drifted into a bi-annual lunch. At best we were lollipop friends. I began to wonder if we were closer to spider friends. A few weeks after my daughter explained her theory of friendships, I was due for my yearly lunch with Natalie. I was dreading it. Halfway through lunch I blurted out that we weren’t good friends anymore. It came out casually; it wasn’t planned, but to me it was obvious. She almost choked on her sushi when I said it, but she didn’t argue. We both knew it was true. I told her I felt sad about it for a long time, but we had both changed. It was awkward but authentic, something our friendship had lacked for some time. The great thing about acknowledging the truth of our friendship was that for the rest of lunch we didn’t pretend. Neither of us got out our daybooks to schedule the next lunch. Once we had clarity about our friendship we could let it go. I think this is why my daughter worked so diligently on her own understanding of friendship. Placing her friendships in different categories helped her to know which friends had priority in her life. As for me, I took a long sober look at a friendship that had ended years ago and finally said goodbye. In her past life, Marcia Walker was a lawyer. Now she’s writing a novel. Marcia lives in Toronto, Canada, with her husband and two children.

Like a monkey swinging from tree to tree, this kind of friend swings from person to person. They don’t stay with one friend too long. When they get older, these are the people who thrive at cocktail parties. They are a lot of fun, but there is always the sense they are looking for the next best tree. You feel great when they’re with you but when they latch onto someone new, you feel discarded.

Beg, Borrow, Steal
April Happenings Learn. Thrive. Succeed.
Right around the time I began to notice that my friend Heidi was a thief, the plants in my house began to wilt, and two pots of daisies on my deck withered and died. At first I ascribed it to my inconsistent watering, or maybe a temperature variance, but the mass drooping was disturbing. I’d had the plants for years, and I was attached to their well-being. Heidi was the one friend I knew I could call at three in the morning if ever the need arose, and I was the one who understood her endless ups and downs with her on-again, off-again boyfriend Smitty. We went dancing together, hiked together, spent a weekend in the wine country together. We liked the same rock music, bought the same model of car, and remembered each other’s birthdays in grand style. It took some time before I noticed she was a con woman. She wasn’t a thief in the usual sense. You had to look closely to catch her stealing other people’s self-worth morsel by morsel, since she did it so charmingly. Just a stray crumb of gossip about this person or that, often delivered with a great deal of humor. Every subject of gossip was about someone she also described as her “good friend.” Gradually I began to realize many of the incriminating tidbits were fictitious; even the tales that seemed true were infused with a malicious aftertaste. No one was safe. I was informed that Heather was high on pot brownies, and Ned had turned into a terrible narcissist. Julie was a binge eater but for goodness sakes, don’t tell anyone, the poor dear. I watched her lie to people directly and cheerfully: “Oh, I meant to invite you—of course you must come!” she told a neighbor whom she had criticized mercilessly that very afternoon. “You look gorgeous, as always,” she said to Sally, though she described Sally as “totally frumpy” to everyone else behind her back. Strange little seedlings of mistrust took root among those of us who knew each other. Nothing you could quite put your finger on, but a reserve developed, and no one seemed as open or relaxed in conversation. Odd glances were exchanged, sudden awkward pauses inserted themselves where talk had once flowed effortlessly. At the plant nursery, searching for sturdier greenery to replace my daisies, I noticed two women walking side by side down one of the aisles, exclaiming over the more exotic ornamentals. They seemed so glad to be there in one another’s company, and when the two of them laughed together it was a lovely sound, like wind chimes in a lush garden. I felt a sudden pang— had Heidi’s and my friendship ever felt like that, sounded like that? I wanted to linger in the nursery a long while, take solace in this super-oxygenated place of refined, healthy things that were carefully tended and blooming. It seemed as if Heidi’s pain was rising ever closer to the surface. Her daughter was fighting often enough with other girls in school to warrant a call from the principal, and Heidi’s descriptions of Smitty grew nastier even when they were seeing each other regularly. She complained about the gifts he brought or didn’t bring, his bedroom finesse, and all sorts of personal details. She didn’t tell him when she went out a few times with other men. Her eyes, once full of vitality, looked tired and dull; all the sparks of life ignited only in the dramatic stories she relayed about the failings and flaws of others. It didn’t escape me that I was probably being dissected elsewhere in much the same manner. The final uprooting of our friendship happened one afternoon at an outdoor café when she was laughing about a mutual friend’s therapy sessions. “I could have told him all that for free,” she said, nudging me conspiratorially. “But at least he got some good drugs! Maybe now he’ll get a girlfriend.” “I need to run,” I said. Her laughter sounded more malevolent than mirthful, and the traffic noises around us suddenly were cacophonous. The next time she called me I made an excuse, and soon she just stopped trying altogether. I still see her once in a while at a restaurant or a party. She makes a show of hugging me if others are around, and if not, we chat for a moment before she walks away abruptly. She doesn’t know how deeply I grieved her for a long time afterward. Yet it was a good kind of grief, bringing with it a newly defined longing for quiet exchanges, sturdy roots and healthy new leaves, fresh air, kindness. I wasn’t even mourning the loss of Heidi herself, I think, but rather the glorious idea of the two of us together. At times when I miss her the most, l remember that now there’s ample room for a person whose laughter sounds like wind chimes, the sort of person who can lead me more deeply back into my own heart simply by opening her own. Toni and Casey Kroll are fused by fitness. The identical twins were together at Clemson and both chose Charleston for post-college career paths. Though Casey went into massage therapy while Toni joined the Mount Pleasant Police Department, they sought the steady energy of exercise. “We both love fitness; we love working out together.” They ventured into personal training before turning to positions at Lululemon, with Toni also instructing at Blast900. Now the twins test their limits in group classes with the support of their sisterhood. “It’s the unknown, and to have your best friend to do it with, it just kind of gives you that comfort when you’re going into new experiences.” But they savor one experience more than sweat sessions: “snug time.” When they were little, this meant climbing under the covers of one twin bed. Now it translates to the occasional slumber party in Toni’s spare bedroom. “We always wanted to be next to each other. That was our bonding time.”

It reflects a café haven Julie found in Thailand, heightened by cha yen, a Thai tea. “It was my orange drink, and when I had a bad day, I kept saying ‘I just need to go to my orange spot.’ That’s what people look for when they go to a coffee shop—a spot for themselves.” That spot surfaces this spring, bringing Lowcountry products—plus cha yen—to Park Circle. “We want people to feel like, when they’re around us, they can be who they are and say what they feel, and all we want to do is just serve them coffee and tea.”

Jennie Hodges and Jenn Hodges are joined by a job. The strawberry blondes share a love for shopping, coordinating play dates with their kids, and their first and last names. Jennie Gromel and Jenn Perkins attended Virginia colleges and met through a mutual friend at a Dave Matthews concert. They clicked and stayed close after graduation, though Jenn taught in California while Jennie gravitated to grad school and a teaching career in Charleston. Their name change came when Jennie married Burt Hodges and Jenn married Tom Hodges, who turned out to be an old friend of Burt’s. “It’s this crazy, small-world story.” When Jenn and Tom moved to Charleston and Jennie went on maternity leave, she encouraged Jenn to sub in her third-grade classroom at Orange Grove. Now they share a contract, working as part-time teachers of the same class by alternating days. Students see them as The Tall Mrs. Hodges and The Small Mrs. Hodges, while faculty and staff refer to them as Hodges, Inc. “It’s hilarious. We love it. We’re just goofy.”

We were intensely focused on planning out our dreams. I would grow up to become the Director of the Peace Corps; Sariyah would be a teacher at an elementary school. Lisa Leshaw
I
t never occurred to me that Sariyah, my very best friend on the entire planet was black. Her skin was surely darker than mine at least until mid-August of each year when I became the darker one with a little solar support. Perhaps on some level I realized the difference in our coloring. I just never thought it meant that Sariyah would be treated any differently on that basis alone. Especially since every 6th grade girl in our class spent their entire allowance on tanning products trying to look exactly like Sariyah, ultimately ending up various shades of bright-orange Crayola. I remember none of us could wait for summer recess to “lay out” with our towels and tan creams and dreams, hoping we’d be paid the highest compliment: “Wow, you are so dark!” At some point, I figured out that starting your life white and turning black from the sun bore zero resemblance to starting your life black from birth. You know how this youthful epiphany came about? Because I never heard a single soul ever said “Wow!” to Sariyah. Well except in the case of Nancy, the class bully, who proudly announced one afternoon that she was going to beat up Sariyah. For emphasis she added, “Wow, watch me now!” I jumped in front to protect my friend when my left eyebrow and Nancy’s fist collided. I came away with a nasty bruise. It was superficial. It took me years to understand that Sariyah was deeply bruised, but her wounds were invisible to the naked eye. Hers were scarring to the soul. That summer a community center with an outdoor pool opened just down the block from us. I asked my mom if she would mind dropping Sariyah and me off. She said no without explanation. We made the same request of Sariyah’s mom. She turned us down without a pause. This scenario repeated itself weekend after weekend until I politely confronted the grown-ups about their refusals. It boiled down to a simple hand-written sign posted at the entrance to the pool: “No Blacks Allowed.” Someone had decided that my best friend wasn’t allowed to swim and splash and slide and dive. She wasn’t even allowed to soak up the sun which I knew belonged to everyone. I wanted that person’s name. They had no right to do this to Sariyah. I never did get that person’s name. I also never went to the community pool, nor any other place that Sariyah’s color prevented her from being welcomed. We spent all of our free days together in the little playground at our apartment complex. We never went down the slide or tried to grab the out-of-reach monkey bars. Instead we spent our girl-time swinging side-by-side with identically timed leg pumping so that we could hear one another chatter up a storm.
We were intensely focused on planning out our dreams. I would grow up to become the Director of the Peace Corps; Sariyah would be a teacher at an elementary school. Leaving the playground late one afternoon we heard a voice command Sariyah, “Sit down, ’cause I didn’t give you permission to leave.” The bully strutted into view, chest all puffed out in front of her friends. I grabbed for Sariyah’s hand and whispered for her to look down and keep walking. I thought it was good advice, but within seconds Sariyah was surrounded. She didn’t make a move. Every instinct in me screamed to do something, so I did. I kicked the closest shin. In return, I received a fistful of dirt in my face and my hair twisted by its ponytail. Nancy had pinned Sariyah to the ground. I waited a few seconds for her instincts to kick in. When they didn’t, I yelled for her to start kicking. Instead, she lay there choking on dirt, scrunched up into a little ball. Nancy kicked her once for good measure, laughed and left. Sariyah wiped her mouth with the sleeve of her shirt, walked over to the water fountain and bent her face down so the water could wash away the dirt. She wiped her face dry with her hands. It took me a minute to realize that I had just watched a well-choreographed ritual, one Sariyah had obviously performed many times before. We walked home in silence. This was the angriest I remember being in my whole life, but I didn’t know who I was angrier with: Nancy for hurting Sariyah or Sariyah for not hurting Nancy. I wanted to know why she let anyone treat her like that. My question hung in the air unanswered. I pursued it relentlessly, pushing and prodding for the next 15 minutes, and Sariyah continued her pretend deafness. I veered off to my apartment without saying goodbye, but the next day we were back to bosom-buddy status with nonstop secret-sharing well into the night. We continued this endless chatter for five uninterrupted years. In 11th grade, Sariyah’s father relocated his family to Washington, D.C. I visited Sariyah on her 17th birthday, and we spent a lazy afternoon sitting on the swings at her local park. I was reminded of another park on a very different day long ago, but if the same thought crossed Sariyah’s mind she never mentioned it. On the plane ride home, I reflected on the true difference between Sariyah and myself. It had nothing at all to do with color. Sariyah had figured out an important secret about life, one that I had yet to master. She made the very best of her lot and didn’t complain or pity herself. She preserved her dignity and her pride and never gave in to the hatred around her. She made no excuse and placed no blame. Instead, she blossomed against the odds. As life would have it I never did become the Director of the Peace Corps, nor did Sariyah become an elementary school teacher. She became the principal.

If you sometimes forget to reapply sunscreen when you should, consider an extra line of defense in the stylish form of a Tula hat. While on vacation in Mexico 22 years ago, Alice Eichelmann found a handcrafted palm hat that she thought would be perfect for gardening. She tracked down its origin to a town where the villagers have been weaving hats out of palm leaves for more than 400 years. She began collaborating with them, and now they weave, sew and shape her stylish designs.Tula hats are constructed to be breathable in hot weather, and their sun protection is rated UPF 50+. “Who has the map?”
P
IFIC CREST AC
AIL TR
I
Jessica Hill
stripped off my clothing, exposing my bare skin to the bitter night, and climbed on top of Rosita, stomach-to-stomach, skin-on-skin. Nicole wrapped her tiny, naked self around the two of us. Using our t-shirts and yoga pants for cover, we lay there in a cuddled heap of flesh, allowing regret for our unintentional camping trip to spread over us like the weight of a heavy blanket. It was a warm September day when we arrived at the Mathieu Lakes trailhead just west of Sisters, Oregon. We wouldn’t need our coats, we decided, because we were planning to return before dark. We wouldn’t need our cell phones because we didn’t even get service in the parking lot. And bringing food was unnecessary because Rosita’s parents had just served us brunch as we discussed how a short hike was the perfect cure for our reunion-induced hangovers. Prepared with water and friendship, we started into the pine-covered forest. Eventually, we came to a sign stating we were walking the Pacific Crest Trail (an advanced hiker’s dream of 2,650 miles leading from Canada to Mexico) and wondered if we had missed our turn. We didn’t know how far we had come, but we knew we weren’t aiming to conquer the PCT. We kept moving, looking for any indication we were on the right path, when the trail forked ahead. “Who has the map?” Nicole checked her pockets.

Survival Sisters
“You mean the one we left on the kitchen table?” I tried to remember the trail map Rosita’s father lent us—the one we’d mostly ignored. Rosita’s face was grave. “Definitely take the right.” A few more miles curved us through mounds of lava and twisted, white-bark pines before leading to the edge of a cliff. Looking over, the wilderness appeared to reach the Pacific Ocean. Rosita let out a sigh. “Maybe it was left?” Darkness and panic arrived together. “I think we should sleep here, in the middle of the trail,” said Rosita. “Then we know we can backtrack tomorrow.” Nicole and I shuddered. “If we continue now and lose the trail, we risk being lost all day tomorrow too.” We nodded in agreement and refrained from mentioning our true fears. What if we see a cougar? Are we already too lost to find our way out? Will we freeze to death? As we settled in for the night, we fantasized about a dinner we weren’t going to taste: We combined piping-hot enchiladas with homemade guacamole; we sautéed shrimp in a variety of spices; and we sipped on expensive cabernet. For dessert, we gorged ourselves on tropical fruits, dipping each savory bite in a decadent chocolate fondue. As we lay back to watch the stars twinkle against a clear sky, our stomachs gurgled. I rested my head on Rosita’s bare chest and warmed my hands under her back. “Thank God I love you,” she joked. We had removed what little clothes we had on because of a common belief in the lore that sharing our direct body heat would keep us warmer, while allowing our clothing to act as a shield from the cold. Later, we would learn how wrong we were. When silence fell upon us, I imagined one of the stars to be a spotlight shining down from a rescue helicopter. Or maybe it would be a flashlight held by a handsome knight on a horse. I fought the urge to cry, realizing that even if Rosita’s parents (the only people who knew where we were) had come looking for us, we were so far off our original trail they wouldn’t have known where to start. I rolled over, warming my back against Nicole’s, and lost the battle with my tears. If the girls heard my sobs, they said nothing. I thought about the hiker who two years earlier had lost her life on this very trail. “Exposure to the elements,” the article read. I thought about the phone call from my mom that very morning. She warned me about the unusual number of cougar sightings near the Deschutes River Trail I frequently run. Instead of shying away from the menace like I told her I would, I was practically sleeping in his bed. The minutes sluggishly turned into hours, and the stillness that exaggerated my fears finally turned to the welcome sound of chirping birds. As the sun gradually warmed the day and thawed our stiff limbs, it shone on a miracle up ahead. We stopped, not trusting our sleepy eyes, as three horsemen rode toward us, shouting Rosita’s name. “That’s me!” she declared. The Deschutes County Search and Rescue had found us. We mounted their horses and allowed them to guide us out of the wilderness. “It was 25 degrees up there last night. How did you stay warm?” We shot each other knowing smiles. “We cuddled.” Almost as if he read our minds, he later told us how sleeping naked is only a survival tactic if one person is suffering from hypothermia. It doesn’t work as a prevention method, like we originally thought, though none of us can remember for certain where we heard it did. Back in Rosita’s car, we decided to focus on the positive. We passed around praise for our ability to remain calm in such a stressful situation. We knew we had made a silly mistake (or ten) that could easily have been prevented with a flashlight and a map, but it also could have been far worse had we turned our fear into arguments, our anger into foolish thinking. Rosita pulled the car onto the highway toward hot meals and cozy beds and passed a building that read “Sisters Tattoo.” We may have overlooked the small wooden post that told us where to turn in the forest, but we weren’t going to miss this sign. That night we all slept in Rosita’s bed, and when I awoke in a tangled embrace, I questioned whether it had all been just a dream. Then I looked down to see the Three Sisters Mountains engraved on my healing skin and knew it marked a powerful lesson on sisterhood and survival that would find me if I ever felt lost again. xoxonikki I couldn’t wait to grow up and out of my childhood home, to play house with my boy-husband, to make my own way in the world. But sometimes I wish I could return to a time when I was a teenager living on hope and chocolate fudge. When I spent hours on the phone with my boyfriend, listened to the radio all night and couldn’t live without a pair of penny loafers. Come to think of it, I’m still doing all those things...only the boyfriend is older and the radio is iTunes, but the shoes are still too expensive.

Photo by Michael Eastman on sfgirl bybay.com I admit I read porn—design porn, that is. I try to quit periodically, but before I know it, I’m pulling up my favorite SFGirlbyBay.com and scrolling through rooms like this till my eyeballs burn. I’m swept off my feet by rustic farm tables, photo walls and Instagrammed lives. I stay up late and order stuff that never looks good in my house. So then I swear off and stream a PBS documentary...until the next time I need a faux finish fix.

“When spring knocks at your door, regardless of the time of year or season of our lives, run, do not walk to that door, throw it open with wild abandon, and say, ‘Yes! Yes, come in! Do me, and do me big!" Jeffrey R. Anderson, The Nature of Things: Navigating Everyday Life with Grace
I came across this quote accidentally, but it’s how spring makes me feel. No matter how often it's rolled around in my life, I'm smitten all over again. And no matter how many birthdays go by, spring makes me remember first love and be ready to fall just as hard.
