There’s something magic about these chilly winter months, these smallest days, these longest nights that have us searching for inspiration to fill the dark hours with things that light up our souls. We seek warmth of body and spirit. We wander aisles to the tune of holiday muzak, wondering if this is the year we find a balance between our hearts and our wallets. The for-real gifts can’t be bought, wrapped, or tied with a bow. They’re in the love we let go without expecting a return-on-investment, in the small secret favors, in the “their hands in our hands” moments without words. Surround yourself with garlands of laughter, glowing strings of love and delight, the beloved, the cherished, the precious. Treasure the ones who love us because of (and not in spite of) who we are. Hold the lessons of past, present and future tight with both arms. Turn up the kindness, turn down the mayhem. Let’s make a date to pause in the very last seconds of the very last night of the year and whisper a new year’s wish to the wind. Don’t just believe in miracles— make them happen.
“Stop the habit of wishful thinking and start the habit of thoughtful wishes.” Mary Martin

Is this your hair? Problem: HAIR BREAKAGE AND THIN HAIR When the protective cuticle layer of the hair is damaged or destroyed, then the hair gets thinner and thinner, and even the slightest strain can lead to the hair breaking off completely. The causes: frequent, often incorrect washing, combing and brushing of the hair – especially when wet, since wet hair is delicate. But heat-styling with flat iron and blow-dryer, as well as frequent chemical color treatments put an enormous strain on the hair. Add to that environmental influences such as sun, salt water, chlorine, and even diminished hair strength due to increasing age.
The consequence: The hair keeps getting thinner and duller – especially in the lengths and ends. Attractive hairstyles get more and more difficult to achieve. The solution: The existing hair is gently supplemented and replenished with high-grade, hand-selected human hair. This hair matches the own hair in color, length and structure, allowing for an absolutely natural look. The integration process is completely gentle and nondamaging; wearing it feels just like one’s own hair, without any noteworthy lifestyle limitations. The additional volume looks completely natural and can’t be distinguished from own hair.

I begin to wonder. Does she have a husband? Does she live alone? Does she engage in social activities or have friends with whom to socialize? I suddenly realize I am disappointed in myself. I was so caught up with my night, and my list, and trying to get home to relax that I feel I may have missed an opportunity to get to know someone, if only for a few minutes. Life is too short. Everyone gets so focused on themselves that they sometimes miss the important aspects of life no matter how small they might be. When we become older, it becomes harder to meet people and make friends. And as we age, we realize that although we have come across many people throughout this short time, there are only a handful of these people that we consider to be our true friends. The ones that will stand by us during the rough times; The ones that will be brutally honest; The ones that we never want to let go. et’s face it. Life is busy. AND DRINK
STRIPED PIG
Striped Pig Distillery is Charleston’s first distillery, specializing in small-batch, handcrafted spirits made from the freshest, local ingredients. To create its Striped Spiced rum, Striped Pig used their rum that has notes of vanilla and butterscotch and added natural spices to it that really sets it apart from other spiced rums.
Warm this drink up and you have a reason to stay a little longer at the bonfire.
Available at local liquor stores or the Striped Pig distillery.

Our favorite party trick (and truck): Coastal Crust’s custom built truck was created to cater pizza in such a unique way (including set up and service). The truck stopped by our offices this month and made its signature margarita pizza, and we’re still dreaming about it.

He’s So Original | Adam Witty has a noble vision.
That’s what the Founder and CEO of Advantage Media Group calls what he does on a day-to-day basis. “My company’s mission is to help others tell their stories with passion and knowledge. Learn and grow...that’s the noble vision.” What began in the spare bedroom of his home inspired an international publishing company that has been named on the prestigious Inc. 500/5000 list of America’s fastest growing private companies in 2012, 2013, and 2014, and the Best Places to Work in South Carolina list for 2013 and 2014. “We’re like a sherpa for our authors,” says Adam. “Everyone needs a coach and it’s amazing to be able to work with intensely passionate people every day.” He’s a busy guy—check out AdamWitty.com and see if you can keep up with his many hats—and manages to get his boat out on Charleston Harbor every now and then, but says his work is a constant inspiration. “I like hanging around badasses and letting that magic rub off on me,” he laughs. “If you want to better yourself, surround yourself with people who are smarter and better than you are.” See all available Advantage Media titles at AdvantageFamily.com.

Rebecca Darwin thinks big. While Rebecca didn’t move to Charleston with the intent of starting a magazine, the Columbia native began her career in New York at GQ and eventually became the first female publisher of The New Yorker, so it wasn’t a huge surprise that she founded Garden & Gun with partner Pierre Manigault. The magazine has garnered a lot of attention, being called “The New Yorker of the South” (again, no surprise), and Rebecca says that most of the publication’s success comes from “hiring good people and getting out of their way.” If you talk to anyone on the G&G staff, they’ll tell you that Rebecca is a leader through and through. Rebecca says that communication is key. “We have monthly meetings about the broad picture of our mission and vision for the magazine,” she says. “The magazine has soul...we call it ‘the high and the low’...a blend of literary and Lowcountry.” She has been called a visionary—just Google her and see—but she prefers simply “busy.” “I’m not a superwoman, but I’m not very good at sitting still,” says Rebecca, who has 10 and 12-year-old daughters and a husband with his own full-timeplus job. Her inspirational advice to others? “Always think big and don’t operate on fear.”

Kathryn Budig aims to inspire. She trained and taught in Los Angeles for 8 years under the guidance of Maty Ezraty and now travels the world sharing her passion for healthy living. Kathryn spends much of her time inspiring others, but says she never tires of doing it. “Seeing my students ‘wake up’ and love themselves inspires me. It keeps me motivated to stay strong on my work path of spreading how to aim true,” she says. Her advice on overcoming obstacles is to stay in the moment. “For me, it’s all about taking everything one day at a time. I get overwhelmed when I look at the big picture and that affects my inspiration. If I simply choose to give the current situation my all, I feel rewarded and calm.” Dogs are great models for living in the moment and, with that in mind, Kathryn co-founded “Poses for Paws” (facebook.com/posesforpaws), an organization that raises money for animal shelters through yoga. Practice with Kathryn around the globe (visit KathrynBudig.com for info) or online at Yogaglo.com. Her next passion project: A new book, Aim True, which has 50 healthy recipes in it, on top of advice for meditation, yoga, and living.

QANDA I’m an entrepreneur & find it hard to separate ME from my business. Should I? You are your brand, and it’s crucial, especially if you’re the face of your business, to walk the walk and talk the talk. Work it, girl!
I heard Facebook is becoming passe in business. Should I use it to market my company? Facebook is alive and well and still growing. I never recommend ONLY using Facebook to market your business. Diversify, provide good content and budget for a Facebook ad spend.
Sdg Social Do Good The TOMS Animal Initiative + The Clinton Foundation + Wildlife Conservation Society is an extremely inspiring movement to help protect African elephants that are getting poached for their ivory. This is very serious epidemic close to my heart, and purchasing shoes and products for yourself helps save these gentle giants from extinction. More at: TOMS.com

social tips For moms: Are you prone to oversharing your child’s life on social media? Redirect your thoughts to a private email address in your child’s name that you’ll share with them when they’re older. Ask friends and family to participate, and email all the moments you want to remember to THAT address only.Your personal connections (and your child someday) will thank you for scaling back. For everyone: Take control of your financial future with Mint, the website and app. It helps create your overall financial picture, breakdown where your money is going and can help track goals. Knowledge is power, especially when it comes to your finances.
