harbor. Be a rock for someone who’s on shaky ground. We’re all first-graders at heart so make valentines for your friends. But be an angel, and don’t forward that Guardian Angel chain letter. Visit the lovelorn at an animal shelter.
Tip generously at the car wash. Don’t pick all the cashews out of the mixed nuts. Try to bite your tongue before you back-bite. Don’t interrupt when your friend is talking unless her hair is on fire. For the love of god, respect the 12-item-or-less Express Lane! It’s a shopping act of mercy. Your hugs can lower someone’s blood pressure; repeat as needed. It’s February, after all…Love Ahoy! Dating solutions for Charleston’s Christian
Singles
I am asked all the time, “How do I find other quality, compatible, Christian singles who want a meaningful relationship?”
“
I
sympathize with Christian singles in the Charleston area, as there are very few methods to meet someone that is compatible, wants the same things from life that you do, and shares similar values,” says Heather Olson, Director of Romance for ChristianSinglesDate.org, Charleston’s oldest, and most respected traditional matchmaking firm. “So many people resort to the internet these days, which brings about so many obstacles, from safety to whether or not the person is even single! Studies have shown that close to 38% of internet profiles are from married people, or people already in a serious relationship.” ChristianSinglesDate.org avoids these hassles by personally meeting with each potential member beforehand, not only to get to know their personality and desires, but to keep it safe for our current members by performing background checks. “Our service is not for
everyone,” says Mrs. Olson. “If you’re in the market just to ‘date’ and hang out with as many people as you can, with no real goals in mind, our service is not for you.” Don’t think everyone who comes to see us is ready for the altar either, however they definitely want a good, wholesome, loving, monogamous relationship. Too many people just don’t know where they are, or what they want out of life. As unfortunate as this may be, ChristianSinglesDate.org cannot subject our members to an individual with little focus or direction in regards to their love life, and this one of the top aspects of what we do, and what our members appreciate. Our service is selective and we work with you one-on-one to assist you in getting a clearer vision of what you are looking for, and preparation to move forward in meeting other compatible singles.
If you’re exhausted with the internet, or simply looking for a safer, more time-efficient way to find someone special, then take a moment to consider ChristianSinglesDate.org, and call one of our Relationship Specialists today.

FROM THE EDITOR After a month of biting your nails over resolutions, February is a palate-cleanser of whole-hearted love. With This
It was perfect because it was mine.
I
Kim Salyer Griffin
can remember years ago, being in a mall department store, shopping alone, standing at the jewelry counter, sifting through earrings on clearance and seeing a fake diamond engagement ring. A sparkly ring, in my size, for $14.99. I slipped it on my finger, the price tag dangling, and held my hand out to admire it. Just for a second, I wanted what my friends had, what so many of my coworkers had. I stared at the ring, on the appropriate finger, and caught myself tearing up for all that I was afraid wouldn’t be. I slid it off, back into the clearance bin, glancing around to see if anyone had seen my wistful moment. Now I had a ring of my own. Not fake, not outrageously expensive, but gorgeous, and more than I ever hoped for. It was perfect because it was mine. In the two years we had been married, and the four months I had the ring before we got married, I can honestly say that there was not one day I didn’t look down and give thanks. I had waited so long. It wasn’t my plan to be unmarried until 40, but I was. Now I couldn’t stop staring at it. The ring looked more beautiful than ever. I was standing in line, not just tearing up, but sobbing, openly, in public. The man behind the counter let me know it was my turn. I stepped forward and tried to compose myself as I asked how much of a loan I could get for my ring. The pawn shop employee seemed oblivious to my tears or emotion, not in a cold way, he had just obviously seen this all before. I had actually imagined a scenario in the car on the way to the pawn shop, where, seeing how distraught I was, and how obviously dear to me the ring was, the kindly employee would shake his head and tell me to keep the ring, he would loan me the money without collateral. I knew it wouldn’t happen and now it was much more real than I imagined. I slid the ring off and remembered my husband putting it on. First, the engagement ring in the jewelry store where we picked it out, then the wedding band that day in November in front of everyone who meant everything to us. The employee looked through a small scope, talking out loud about the flaws in the ring, why he would have to give me less money. He kept talking, and with each word, I wanted to yank the ring out of his hand and tell him it was flawless, beautiful. But we were in a desperate place. Credit cards maxed, my husband out of work, bills that had to be paid. Loans from friends and family still unpaid. It was a dire, extreme decision to be here. I had never set foot in a pawn shop before and I felt oddly dirty standing there now. He put my ring on a scale and explained the process of deciding the loan amount. It ended up being half of what I had asked for, but would pay the most urgent bills we had. He started the paperwork and I panicked. I asked if I could think for a moment. I felt lightheaded, dizzy, sick. I grabbed the ring and backed up, trying to explain myself as I ran out of the store and to my car, with my ring still in my hand instead of on my finger. I sat in my car crying for a few minutes, cursing life and how hard things were right now.
I slid the ring on one last time. It was perfect. It was mine. But I knew there was no choice. I walked back in the shop and slid my ring off again and handed it to him quickly before I could think. My ring was placed in a tiny plastic bag; I signed a piece of paper. I nodded as he told me the conditions of the loan, and how long I had to pay it back before the ring became their property. Their property. I knew the likelihood of us coming up with the money in time was slim. I had known from the moment that I made the decision to come here that I would probably never see my ring again. It’s just a thing, I kept saying to myself. It isn’t what matters. What matters is me and my husband—us—our love. It’s just a material possession. I said this out loud in the car as I drove away, steering through tears to go back home. Home, where my life is. My husband, our dog, our other things. Things that weren’t valuable enough to trade for money to save us right now. I come in the door to my husband’s embrace and my dog’s wiggly happy dance. These are the things that matter. I know that. But my left hand feels light and empty and I constantly feel for the ring, forgetting in moments at work or the middle of the night that my ring is gone, sitting in a vault, waiting for me—and I can’t go retrieve it. In the irony of my life, I pass by the pawn shop on my way to the train station each day as I head to work. I try to avert my eyes. My ring is right there. Right there. It seems so unfair. I remember seeing the other rings in the glass case at the pawn shop. Other rings that no one made it back to retrieve, or perhaps discarded after a failed marriage. I imagine someone months from now, peering through the glass and seeing my ring there and having no idea the pain that was behind letting it go. It’s just a thing, I tell myself. I ask myself if the single me, so unhappy, so lonely, would have cared about a ring. It wasn’t the ring I wanted, it was what it symbolized. It was the commitment, the love, the marriage, the vows, the day-to-day, ’til death do us part. She wouldn’t have. She got what she really wanted. That was what mattered. Each day now, my husband kisses my ring finger, and he tears up. We both do. Marriage is hard. Life is hard. Nothing is ever as perfect as you want it to be. It’s all random—hills and valleys, highs and lows. It’s choices. Sacrifices. Pain in the midst of knowing you are doing the right thing. It is about things… learning their value, their meaning, and the loss of them. Somehow, this weird equation equals your life. Mine has added up to what I wanted it to be. There’s still more left to the equation, and knowing that helps me drive to the train station each day, with a little less pain in my heart. Tomorrow my husband will kiss my ring finger again, as he does each day, and that will remind me that the things I always dreamed about and wanted aren’t things. They are warm and alive and underneath this roof and next to me. They are perfect because they are mine.

THE ANSWER TO: “What are kids consuming in schools?”
The US Department of Agriculture’s new Smart Snacks in School rule goes into effect with the 2014-2015 school year. Prior to the new rule, the snack and a la carte food standards hadn’t been revised since 1979. The new guidelines will mean that snacks in vending machines, school stores, a la carte lines and snack bars are healthy—fruits, vegetables, protein, dairy, or whole grain; have fewer than 200 calories; and be low in fat, sodium, and sugar 32 februaryw2014 skirt!magazine

Sebastian Smith wants to bring Charleston into focus. After a Big Apple hiatus spent in Los Angeles, a friend of Sebastian’s mentioned he was renting out his place in Charleston. Did Sebastian, an editorial and commercial photographer, and his family want it? They absolutely did. A lifelong culture-hopper, Sebastian has quickly integrated himself into Charleston’s creative scene—a gallery show up at Michael Mitchell, a guest-judging gig at Charleston Fashion Week, and a top-secret upcoming show that promises to “blow the doors off anything ever seen in Chucktown.” His dream project though, is to put fellow Lowcountry artists on the map. “Professionally speaking, it’s an adjustment. I see jobs going to other cities that should be coming here; that’s hard for me to comprehend because you have every location and every caliber of artist here in Charleston. The Holy City is a creative director’s dream.” What do you love about skirt! Magazine? “The writing is smart and genuine and comes from a perspective that, as a father, I can relate to my family life.” What do you like about wearing a skirt? “Well, I fancy myself as a man’s man—a tattooed rocker and general rabble-rouser—however, since it’s just us girls here, I don’t mind admitting that I’ve been known to rock an Anders Landinger skirt during the summers.” skirt!magazine

This mix is blended with all natural Worcestershire, sea salt, habanero mash and celery seed.
Local with a twist—Charleston Mix’s Bold + Spicy Bloody Mary is great asis, but we’ve got a secret addition: two drops of sriracha for every glass. Mix up this sexy, spicy drink and serve up a lighter version of pimento cheese for a bit of balance. Our special spread featured Keens, which has a sharp tang, and a healthy shot of pickle juice, which makes a sweet pickle topper the perfect pairing. Lahvosh can be purchased as a pizza-sized cracker, meaning shattering the crisp into bite-sized pieces is half the fun.
1 part vodka 2 parts Charleston Mix’s Bold + Spicy Bloody Mary Two drops of sriracha per serving Lime slices for garnish
Make sure your drink is shaken, not stirred.
Measure out your vodka of choice, add the Charleston Mix and the sriracha, and shake like crazy in a cocktail shaker of ice. Pour the spiced-up bloody over fresh ice in a cocktail glass and top with a slice of lime.
From the skirt! Office Test Kitchen
1 c grated Keens white cheddar 1/2 c grated mozzarella cheese 2/3 c plain Greek yogurt 4 oz roasted red peppers 1 tbsp horseradish 1 oz pickle juice
Combine all ingredients in a bowl and thoroughly mix. Serve with Lahvosh cracker bread and top with Gordy’s sweet chip pickles.
Gordy's recipe is infused with organic cucumbers, fresh ginger and garlic and sweet brine.Their motto is “We think you’ll taste the effort.”
This rotary cheese grater can be used by both left- and right-handed people. skirt!magazine

Because she’s enthusiastic about education. Because she doesn’t want her story to be yours. Because she rocks that red for a good cause.
When Keisha Hawes suffered a heart attack at age 31, she was unaware that she had even been at risk. “That was my warning sign that I needed to make big changes,” Keisha, a mom to three, says. “Now I have the opportunity to do things differently.” Insistent on raising awareness in the community and educating those close to her about their risk factors, Keisha urges friends and family to commit to making healthy changes for life— and her platform as a National Go Red for Women spokeswoman will allow her to reach women across the country who may need a nudge. “We’re all busy, but women must take the time to meet with their doctors and take charge of their own health,” Keisha says. “One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned through this experience is that I can’t be in control of everything in my life all the time. My heart attack taught me how to ask for help.”

name is Laura Cannon and my A SuCCESS STOry Mybusiness partner is Julie Simuang.
We own and operate a small coffeehouse in the Park Circle neighborhood of North Charleston, SC, Orange Spot Coffee House. The brick and mortar doors opened on June 11, 2013, and we are proud to report that we have steady sales and a very positive response from the surrounding community. Early in our journey, we registered for an hour-long business plan workshop housed at the Center for Women after several friends and acquaintances urged us to become involved. Neither Julie nor I had standard collateral that banks look for and we did not have significant capital to contribute to the business. We were armed with passion and years of experience in our field, but at the end of a day that meant we could only make honest promises of intent to bankers. And we swiftly realized that means nothing in the financial world. And yet, our mentor at the SC Women’s Business Center greeted us with enthusiasm, held us to standards she knew we could meet, and believed in us. She has seen our darkest days and still brainstormed ways in which we could make it work. Our mentor wants to see women succeed, wants them to have the confidence to pursue dreams and careers unabashedly…to always push us higher than we thought we could climb. That is the SCWBC does for its clients. EmpowEring womEn to SuCCEEd EvEry day

Because it’s possible to cross 5 bridges beFore you get to work. We have 215 days of sunshine a year. Pimento Cheese is on almost every restaurant menu. With over 300 churches, you can find forgiveness on every corner. We’re not afraid to paint a house fuchsia, lilac, lime green or turquoise. Because Social Restaurant and Wine Bar has over 50 wines sold by the glass. We still have a skating rink that charges $3 on Thursday night. (skates included.) No matter where you go, when you say you’re from Charleston, people say “oh, I love that city.” We still have a farmers market in the middle of Winter. Darius Rucker has a street named after him. He Said/She Said
Michael and Joseph Abro are longtime loves. The Citadel isn’t quite known as a hotbed for meeting women, but Joseph, in 1993, unknowingly met his future wife when its boys summer camp invited area girls to attend the camp’s dance. When 13-year-old Joseph spotted a “cutie in a striped shirt and short white shorts” he simply asked her to dance. Little did he realize they’d end up keeping in touch with letters, phone calls, and recurring visits for over a decade.
Michael: “It wasn’t until 2006 that Joseph had moved and I happened to visit him one weekend. It was the first time that we were at the same place in our lives— one of us had always been in a relationship when the other was single.” Joseph: “Since we were only friends, Michael met all of my girlfriends over the years. Each would have some idea that there was something... of course I always said she and I were just friends.”

Lauren and Brandon Belk had an immediate attraction. When Lauren’s family vacation hit an unforeseen snag and they unexpectedly ended up back in Charleston and at The Grocery for dinner, lightning struck. While she awaited her family at the restaurant’s bar, Lauren locked eyes with Brandon, a server.Throughout the evening, the two traded “love at first sight” glances and eventually a phone number was passed on the sly without a single word spoken between the two.
Lauren: “Within the first two hours of the first date we went on, I texted my friend that I was in love. Brandon wouldn’t hold my hand or anything, but I pretty much made him kiss me at the end.” Brandon: “We would talk for hours and hours, and it didn’t take me long to know that she and I were the perfect match. We still experience the same magnetism that we did when we first met.”

Every year, just before spring, I pretend I'll have landscaping instead of a yard, flowers instead of sand spurs, sod instead of sandy soil. I imagine open-hearted morning glories, green-as-envy banana trees, climbing roses rioting outside my door. My mother could touch bare earth and make it bloom. I have to settle for Eden in my mind's eye and a lipstick-red geranium on the porch step.
Looking forward to:

I loved Austin Kleon’s first book, Steal Like an Artist, and pre-ordered his newest, Show Your Work! I’m ultra self-conscious about showing people my paintings so I hope to draw a little courage from it. I also got the idea for keeping a 2014 Logbook from his blog, and a tiny yellow Moleskine is by my bed to hold nightly entries.
It’s 2014, and I didn’t turn into someone who carries index cards, organizes

her books by subject (poetry, get out of travel!), wakes up at 5am to write for an hour, cooks the recipes clipped from magazines, and cleans out the office closet. Every year, I resist self-improvement, waste time, sleep late, acquire clutter and can’t find the quote I should have saved on an index card.
